If you're looking forward to sacrificing all of your free time, hobbies, friends and family when Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrives in March, and just so happen to be looking for the best way to enjoy the game, you might want to consider these new officially-licensed controllers.
Gaming accessory maker PowerA is back once again with two new designs in its Enhanced Wireless Controller range. There's a Timmy and Tommy Nook controller with a leaf pattern all over, and a K.K. Slider controller featuring little icons for items, bugs, fish and the like.
Here's a quick feature list:
- Wireless freedom using Bluetooth 5.0
- LEDs for player number, button mapping, and low battery warning
- Includes two AA batteries for up to 30 hours of gameplay
- Features advanced gaming Buttons for on the fly button mapping
- Officially Licensed by Nintendo with two-year limited warranty
You can go ahead and pre-order the Timmy and Tommy and K.K Slider controllers as we speak from Amazon; they're set to release on 10th March (ten days before the game comes out) and cost $49.99 each. This makes them cheaper than Nintendo's official Pro Controller, but they do lack some features like gyro control and the NFC reader.

They’re kind of ugly.
Oh, and it begins! Goodbye my money!
57 days to go, thanks for the countdown!
Even if I had no other issues with these, the lack of a rechargeable battery is an absolute deal killer for any modern controller.
I like that some 3rd parties, like 8BitDo, have a rechargable that can be swapped for AA if you really can't wait, but lacking one entirely is just not okay in 2020.
But the other issue I have is that these kind of graphics seem like they would fairly quickly get worn off by actually using the controller. Especially where the picture is right on the grip.
I'd only consider them as a collector's piece, not as a controller to actually use.
I don't trust third party controllers. Hard pass.
There's no way we aren't getting an Animal Crossing themed Switch Mini.
Yo why are these so ugly. Especially the timmy and tommy one. The contrast of the controller and the nooks is disgusting
How’s the buttons quality from this Power A brand? Hori-like?
@Heavyarms55 rechargeable batteries should be the deal killer. They have a limited number of charges and once they reach that point, they become a paperweight. 🤨 I have game systems and accessories from the 80s and 90s that still work after 25-30 years because they take real batteries that you can change out, such as AAA, AA, C, etc.
@NinChocolate Very Solid
Not Nintendo, not buying.
Batteries? Ew no.
@Heavyarms55 I've had a BotW one for a while, the design has held up just fine, but the lack of a rechargeable option is annoying (outside of rechargeable AAs, which are even more annoying)
Honestly, a mirco USB port on the top and compatibility with the Power A Xbox One battery packs would have made it amazing, but I find the Power A Switch controllers hard to recommend due to the lack of rechargeable options
However, (unless they've changed the sticks) if you like to use Kontrol Freak grips, the Xbox One grips fit it perfectly (I have a set of CoD Modern Warfare ones on my BotW controller)
>Power A
Welp, interested dropped to zero.
Getting closer to what I really want, the AC special edition Switch Lite.
Wish they were available in the UK
They're cute and all. I love the variety of these PowerA controllers, but I am also grateful that they lack so many features as I probably wouldn't be able to resist buying a bunch of them (I have every Pro Controller variant, though I have since given away the plain black one).
@BENDsli : The most ridiculous thing about these controllers is that they retail for nearly as much as the Pro Controllers (only a AU$10 difference between these and the plain Pro, though some stores sell both at the same price!), and they end up forfeiting the rechargeable battery, HD rumble, and NFC reader. They aren't even cheap enough to justify the lack of features and battery.
I have the Power A Peach Shadow controller, and it's honestly not the worse controller. I actually really like the D-Pad, and it's perfect for playing games like Puyo Puyo Champions. The buttons are decent as well. The Analogue Sticks know are let down by being too large, and sometimes I don't feel I have enough on them. Saying that, playing Mario Kart 8 DX works fine enough. The biggest issue know is I had to take it apart twice to clean the insides of the left analogue stick to stop it drifting.
These Animal Crossing controllers look like they have smaller and better analogue sticks. So they could fix the issue I have with the controller I have. Although it's probably best to stick with the Pro Controller.
@Kiyata Amazing you've played games so long and don't realize that even rechargeable batteries can be replaced. And that's once if several years at worse, rather than, at best, every several weeks for disposable batteries. And that's assuming you buy the good ones. God forbid you go with the cheap store brand ones in forget about them for a few months, only to find your device ruined when they leak.
Nice enough. However I’ll be spending something like $150 on two copies of game already which is more than enough already. Hopefully GameStop US will have something for preorders to sweeten the deal.
I WISH EVERY DEVICE I OWNED SUPPORTED AA/AAA BATTERIES.
Mobile phones, laptops, controllers, handhelds - they could all live forever if looked after and were compatible with universal batteries.
A couple of years after buying a new phone or laptop you can't buy official replacement batteries (unless you pay extortionate prices) and have to chance it with dodgy import alternatives, and even those dwindle eventually.
Universal batteries should be a legal requirement across the world for all new portable electronics. The waste of usable devices because their batteries are exhausted and can't be easily replaced is ridiculous.
Rechargeable AA batteries are a thing you know - my Wii remotes have been using them for 12 years and are very thankful for it.
Aside from the fact that I'm not keen on controllers that require me to swap out batteries every two weeks, I honestly find these quite ugly, not to mention really expensive considering that they are only £15 cheaper than a pro controller even though they lack a number of features and are of what I would consider an inferior quality. :/
@Blizzia Haven't purchased anything from PowerA after I bought a 3DS game holder from them that didn't actually fit the games.
Batteries? No thanks.
@TheBigK I've been a first party only kinda guy since the 16 bit days but I'm a fully paid up 8bitdo convert now. Arguably better than first party efforts in some respects (d pad and analogue sticks) and quite a bit cheaper. They look amazing too.
These are gorgeous looking and I'm not even an AC fan
@Heavyarms55 it’s astonishing how negligent you must be to have your devices ruined by forgetting you left batteries in them. Wow. Sorry to hear this has been an issue for you, as it’s never been one for me. Odd how us old school gamers can actually keep track of things and also have our things last for decades. Oh yeah, and I’m still playing the same stuff I bought decades ago, as I’d mentioned before so, perhaps, that should mean that I really did take care of those devices and not forget about batteries, hmm? 🤔
@gcunit I agree with you 100%. 💖
These are pretty garish, yikes! Crazy to me nintendo hasn't really gone all in with different pro controller/joycon designs. Power A is really picking up the slack there as some of their controllers look phenomenal.
that green and brown together is really ugly
@TheBigK Thanks to Joy-Con drift, a lot of us don't trust first-party controllers either.
@Kiyata Wow okay. Just enjoy your fantasy.
So are we just never getting any more series based pro controllers or...?
Are they as good as pro controllers? Are there any cons?
Has no one heard of rechargeable batteries? and get this, they're
R-E-CHa-r-g-e-a-b-l-e!, then dispose and buy new if needed and prolly no Joy Drift!!!!!
Hint Don't buy store-branded rechargeable batteries, buy from specialty Battery house which makes the same ones installed in the controllers you already buy.
Wow, they're ugly. And batteries? Naah.
