@carlos82 I think you are either missing the point or intentionally cherry-picking parts of what I said and not looking at the whole picture. The reason the games are not listed is because the companies do not release the data. They may say this game sold 80% more over this period of time but they intentionally leave it vague. That isn’t because they aren’t doing well but it’s because if you speak in generalities it is easier to push a positive narrative which will ultimately bring them more money whether by sales, increase in stock price or whatever.
If they are doing well they don’t gain much by telling you precisely how well. So I gave some numbers to put things into context for you. Witcher 3 released in late 2019 and has sold near a million before calendar year end. Octopath traveler came out summer of 2018 so Witcher 3 is selling at a faster pace. On top of that the devs have nothing but great things to say which is not a guarantee (just look at the Wii U era) and they are inclined to say these things because sales are well.
Let me put it another way. Zombi u on Wii U is considered a failure and it has near a million sales on Wii U alone. Anywhere you look estimates place it from like 800k-1.1mil on Wii U. So if you honestly believe Bethesda, 2k, Ubisoft, etc. are going to continue to bring their games over for only 1mil in sales you are not being realistic.
I mentioned Mario + rabbids because it is 3rd party game. So while yes it had Mario in it, it is still an Ubisoft game and has a couple million in sales.
3rd party games are not bombing. It’s a false narrative and it doesn’t make much sense when most people were here for the Wii U era where sales really were bad.
@carlos82 ok you say you looked at the sales of the top 30 best selling switch games but then give no link. Where did you look at this data and conclude that octopath at 2mil is the best selling 3rd party game? The reason I ask is because most publishers do not release sales data for specific systems. That is the main reason why most 3rd party devs don’t have games in the top selling lists. Nintendo does release sales data every quarter for their best selling games so it is easy to put their games on the list.
So I went and did a google search and I really hope you aren’t basing your comment off this Wikipedia page that clearly states most publishers do not give sales data for specific systems and that is why the list consist mostly of Nintendo games.
I can tell you for a fact Mario + rabbids has sold over 1mil and maybe even 2mil on switch, but Ubi games outside of general figures of a game sold well do not keep giving updates on the exact sales. Enter the gungeon at 1mil is on that list and while that’s a good game I can tell you with the way triple a devs are porting games to switch they are seeing more than a mil in sales.
Cdpr said Witcher sold 800k+ on switch in 2019 but they aren’t on the list. You really believe they haven’t hit a 1mil yet with how much they glow about the switch when asked?
@thesilverbrick I’d go to the store, most price match and Walmart usually has switch games for $50 instead of $60. I think they do this because they know there are companies that give a discount as a preorder bonus. Regardless you should be able to get it in store for the same price.
@Ambassador_Kong it always confuses me how it seems like drift is so much worse this generation than in any other. Back in the GameCube days was the first time I ever experienced drift but I chalk that up to 2000+ hrs of melee.
But now I have had two Xbox one controllers drift, one of which is an elite controller. I have 4 sets of joycons, with one purchased this week, and they all have drift. It’s baffling because the vita control sticks have no drift but look just as fragile.
@playstation_king I would agree with you on the 3ds and vita. I distinctly remember being super annoyed going out into a busy area with my 3ds and still not getting a street pass some days. Which was really surprising to me at the time because I remembered the regular ds being everywhere.
Since the release of Pokémon sword/shield, but before the pandemic and social distancing, I was starting to see a lot of Nintendo switch lite specifically in the hands of kids when I would referee rec sports.
Was looking at this the other day and added it to my wishlist. Will probably pick this up once more of my backlog is cleared or if there is a good sale.
@geheimxy @WanderingHunter a few reasons. The first one is because the switch is my favorite console and being able to take a game on the go but also play it on the tv when I want is ideal to me.
The reason I want it exclusive is because that increases the chances of it being an optimized experience on the switch. In order for something to become exclusive you typically have a monetary deal with the company or you publish the game yourself. So if Nintendo is investing resources into the game to have it be exclusive to the switch that also increases the likelihood that the game will be better optimized for the platform. This leads to the best end product for me on the platform of my choice.
Even if it would only be a timed exclusive deal, it still makes it that you really need to maximize the experience to the system in order to get all the sales during that exclusive period of time. Companies know that even timed exclusive games are usually thought of hand and hand with the console they first released on which is why Sony and Microsoft have at times paid for timed exclusive games or features.
I can understand why people don’t like games being exclusive but also I am talking about an unrealistic scenario that I openly admit to be me dreaming lol.
@mesome713 I really enjoy coming to the comments to read your hot takes. I really think if you had a gaming show or a weekly article I would probably tune in lol. I usually don’t agree with you, but your opinions are just so out there for me that it really has me opening my mind to ways I would never think. I saw a lot of comments are giving you grief, just ignore them. Lots of people on this site have differing opinions, most just don’t comment back when a mob starts coming for them.
I gotta be honest, I wasn’t one of the switch doomsayers after the Wii U failure. I thought the console would do fine but it is blowing my expectations out the water. 49mil switch units and 6mil switch lite units in the wild is impressive. I could see the switch lite by itself selling 40-50mil lifetime when all is said and done. This is the first time I am truly realizing the switch brand has a real shot at selling 100mil overall.
Sales really have shot up since only December. Surprised to see splatoon 2 continuing to sell extremely well. I’m glad they brought back one last splatfest, wonder in continued sales will cause them to continue giving that game events? I knew animal crossing would bump a few games down this list.
You know I just booted up my 3ds yesterday too look at the eshop to see what I need to fill out my 3ds collection. This is a console I will hopefully still be playing 20yrs from now. So many great games only on that system or would play best on that system even if rereleased. Zelda a link between time and Mario 3d land are two games that come to mind that I had physically but either lost or sold a while ago that I need to get back digitally before it’s too late.
Will probably play some hollow knight. This is the main game I want to play currently because silksong should be coming out soon so I need to finish this up. Aside from that I will play Pokémon sword when I need a break from hollow knight and smash ultimate will be my online multiplayer game for the weekend. For some reason been getting that itch to play smash again, it’s just unfortunate I have to resort to online to get my fix.
@HardcoreDaBoss not sure if you are being serious with the “switch ports don’t sell” comment. Pretty sure switch ports sell very well and that is why Nintendo and 3rd party companies are so quick to bring their old games over to the switch. Nintendo has Wii U ports that sell better on switch and 3rd parties have had enough success to keep bringing more and more franchises, look at Bethesda and Ubisoft as examples. 2k is now getting into the mix and dropping tons of ports in May. Companies don’t do that if they don’t think they get a solid return on time and money invested.
@Chowdaire I agree the game is definitely a success on the switch, no question about that. I as a fan was just hoping for it to be a runaway success like some of Nintendo’s first party games have become. This port was done in such a quality manner it’s a shame that more of the switch player base won’t actually get to experience it.
@gcunit I don’t see how this ends up like a Wii situation. The Wii had many problems on a system level that animal crossing or the switch won’t have. First off the Wii was a console and not just a game so the fact that motion controls were viewed as a more casual way to play impacted a significant number of buyers to the system. Since you either had to adapt to those controls or spend extra money on different controllers. Secondly even if animal crossing having tons of more casual people playing, it’s not going to put off fans of the franchise because the games are always fairly causal and laid back.
@The-Chosen-one ok I bought civ 6 a while ago and was really excited for it but when I played it I just didn’t have fun. Heard lots of great things and I want to like it but it just hasn’t clicked with me. Anything you can say that helps you enjoy the game or that I may have missed or didn’t fully understand/appreciate about the game. It’s my first civ game and it’s pretty complex so maybe part of me not enjoying it is just not being able to fully wrap my head around the game.
@Nin10Doe Shin Den Ai ~Nani Ga Hoshii No and Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Scarlet are both cero D which is 17+ from what I can tell and not cero Z which is 18+ in Japan. And NinNinDays is T for teen on esrb in USA. These are all based on google searches I did, so unless there are other versions I cannot find none of the games you list are AO 18+.
Even though these are good numbers I’m honestly surprised it didn’t sell 1m in 2019. Everyone was talking about this release, it had tons of hype and marketing, it is known as one of the all time great games and at release it was $50 for the physical copy at places like Walmart.
I know lots of people already owned it on console where it looks and runs better, I myself already owned it on ps4. But having the game portably is a huge plus and what drove me to personally buy it again on switch. And now I have put in about 65hrs on switch which is way more time then I put on ps4 just due to the flexibility of the console.
I expect when all is said and done for the game to end up with 1.5-2mil copies sold just based on the 2019 numbers. Which is kinda a shame because this is a port that a lot of people would enjoy if they give it a chance and get past the visuals.
@charlieonholiday that was the one I was looking at. Are you mainly playing docked or handheld? Never really played any assassins creed game but I hear black flag is one of the best.
@cptspaulding replying to your post #31. Alcoholism isn’t necessarily easily cured just by locking them in a room with no alcohol. For starters they can suffer from withdrawals and that can be fatal, which is why hospitals and emergency facilities have alcohol withdrawal protocols. Secondly without continued treatment the desire to still drink can still be there. You picked a really poor example to try to illustrate your point that addiction is a choice. Ultimately I don’t think all addictions are choices and I think maybe you should consider doing more research before spreading misinformation.
I honestly don’t see the switch selling 20mil for the next 3 years with the ps5 and nextbox launching, stadia and xcloud gaining more traction, and pc gaming still being a thing, unless the switch has a switch pro come out in a few years. The switch lite is doing a good job of keeping momentum strong but unless the switch line has some new hardware coming in 2021 I think that momentum starts to slow. Without a switch pro I think the switch ends around the 70-80mil mark. With a switch pro I see it getting to that 90-100mil territory.
@Razer I don’t think you read your article fully. Nintendo switch sales increased year over year in October according to the article you posted. Also yes in September shares dropped but that is the market self correction from sky high expectations. Stock prices fluctuate and while I also don’t think the switch will hit 100mil in its lifetime, it is still selling at a pace that is comparable to how the PS4 was selling at this point in its life span. I personally think the switch will land around the 80mil mark if I had to make a prediction.
Idk if I will have time for this between destiny 2, Witcher 3 on switch and Pokémon. Also I have a job and a life outside of gaming! How am I supposed to keep up?
@Zeldafan79 if I get a ps5 or the nextbox I am hoping that they improve the loading times in games significantly and also allow for higher frame rates. I don’t need 4K. 1080p is just fine. But for shooters like destiny 2 for example, are way better on PC because on console the menu lag is atrocious, so bad you cannot change your loadout in crucible (pvp) without risking death, and consoles are locked at 30fps. PC gamers are routinely getting 120+ and sometimes 200fps and it really does make a difference in the gameplay.
@gamer89 First off this isn’t really a Nintendo game. Secondly it’s a free to play game so they have to make money in some way. Most people are offended when full priced games also try to nickel and dime them for features they feel really should have been included with the original purchase. This isn’t a full priced game or even a game that cost money.
Wow just an absolute amazing list of games! The GameCube was my favorite home console of all time, until the switch. Even then the switch is a hybrid and not purely a home console so the GameCube still has an argument imo.
@Anri02 I mean the subscription price is increasing, yes it is due to taxes, but if taxes are already calculated into the listed price then that listed price is going up. Now it may not be Nintendo’s fault taxes have gone up but it would be their fault the subscription price increases because they could... you know, just eat the loss.
Again this assumes taxes are already factored into the list/shown price. If not, then I agree it’s click bait.
Idk how japan does their pricing, but if they factor in taxes with the shown price then this article is not click bait like people are claiming because the listed price will increase. Now if they don’t factor tax in with the shown price and it isn’t calculated until purchase then I can understand why people feel this article is click bait.
The feature I am most excited for is game invites! It’s about time!! Should have launched with the online service. Now I will be waiting for them to actually make voice chat worthwhile. I literally see no point in using the phone app. I pick up my phone and just end up called my friend and putting them on speaker to voice chat as is. Would be so much nicer to have voice chat through the system.
Also who is going around and disliking any comment that mentions game invites. Do these people want Nintendo to stay in 2005 with their online?
No one is saying hero is op. At most they say he is anti competitive due to the copious amounts of rng in his move set. Most people are taking a wait and see approach to hero, unless they are in Australia. They did ban him, but again not because he is op.
True slap in the face to Nintendo fans. Unless it’s a respawn game, I am done buying EA games on any console for a while. Maybe with more governments taking action against micro transactions they will start to realize having their games on Nintendo consoles makes more and more financial sense.

Re: Japanese Charts: Zelda: Link's Awakening Gets Number One As Switch Lite Boosts Console Sales
That is a good week for sales
Re: Pokémon GO Just Had Its Biggest Month Since 2016, Generated $176m In August
@gamer89 First off this isn’t really a Nintendo game. Secondly it’s a free to play game so they have to make money in some way. Most people are offended when full priced games also try to nickel and dime them for features they feel really should have been included with the original purchase. This isn’t a full priced game or even a game that cost money.
Re: Feature: Best GameCube Games
Wow just an absolute amazing list of games! The GameCube was my favorite home console of all time, until the switch. Even then the switch is a hybrid and not purely a home console so the GameCube still has an argument imo.
Re: Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Will Face Increased Renewal Prices
Re: Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Will Face Increased Renewal Prices
Idk how japan does their pricing, but if they factor in taxes with the shown price then this article is not click bait like people are claiming because the listed price will increase. Now if they don’t factor tax in with the shown price and it isn’t calculated until purchase then I can understand why people feel this article is click bait.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 9.0.0 Is Now Live
@Woomy_NNYes I didn’t even consider it would still be tied to the app. I hope it isn’t but wouldn’t be surprised. Will have to test it out tomorrow.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 9.0.0 Is Now Live
The feature I am most excited for is game invites! It’s about time!! Should have launched with the online service. Now I will be waiting for them to actually make voice chat worthwhile. I literally see no point in using the phone app. I pick up my phone and just end up called my friend and putting them on speaker to voice chat as is. Would be so much nicer to have voice chat through the system.
Also who is going around and disliking any comment that mentions game invites. Do these people want Nintendo to stay in 2005 with their online?
Re: Dragon Quest XI S Developers Weigh In On 'Overpowered' Hero In Smash Bros.
No one is saying hero is op. At most they say he is anti competitive due to the copious amounts of rng in his move set. Most people are taking a wait and see approach to hero, unless they are in Australia. They did ban him, but again not because he is op.
Re: The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Gets An October Release Date On Switch
Looks like Luigi’s mansion is gonna get back burnered by me. Since my birthday is in October this will be the perfect birthday game for me.

@Agramonte wonder why they included Brazil in that chart
Re: Switch Owners Choose To Play EA Games On Other Platforms, Says Company CEO
True slap in the face to Nintendo fans. Unless it’s a respawn game, I am done buying EA games on any console for a while. Maybe with more governments taking action against micro transactions they will start to realize having their games on Nintendo consoles makes more and more financial sense.
Re: Luigi's Mansion 3 Gets A Solid October Release Date
A fitting release date, at least here in the states it is.
Re: UK Charts: Super Mario Maker 2 Holds Off Crash Team Racing To Stay In First Place
@westman98 how are you getting these sales estimates?
