The University of California, Irvine has announced that it will host a pilot scholarship team of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players during the 2019-20 academic year.
The scholarship has been made available thanks to a $50,000 donation from the owners of Street Media, a publishing company led by CEO and gaming fan, Brian Calle. Players will be selected by the university's Esports program and TAG Smash Ultimate Club; the funds will be used to offer scholarships worth $6,000 to the top six players and to cover additional costs.
The team won't have a traditional coach, but UCI Esports will provide the necessary staff to coordinate practice times, travel, social media, equipment needs and competitions. It's not just a case of showing up and playing games, either; players are expected to practice 10 to 15 hours per week and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
Mark Deppe, director of UCI Esports, has said the following:
“The ‘Smash’ community at UCI is one of the biggest and most passionate gaming clubs on campus. We are fortunate to be able to offer scholarships to ‘League of Legends’ and ‘Overwatch’ players. When a donor emerged with a desire to support one of his favorite games, we knew this was something we had to pursue to create more opportunities for the ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ student gaming community.”
We wish we had opportunities like this when we were in education - this is a part of the curriculum we can definitely get behind!

Dang, I would have been all over that! Oh well, already got through college.
Proud UCI Alumni. Zot Zot!
Might be time to try for a second degree and game on someone else’s dime
Thanks for starting this the summer after I graduated lol
I guess I better start practicing
Meanwhile I was crushed in my local tournament.
Nice, a scholarship I actually want!
Too bad I'm not any good... (cue sad laughter)
That’s nice. Would be even better if we actually had access to education and didn’t have to beg for scholarships though.
Wait, what career do I have access to with a degree in Smash?
Oh right, Smashburger.
@ALinkttPresent I'm with you. We can do so much more to provide better access to education here in America. Based on the number of atrocities happening in the country right now, it is desperately needed for the sake of future generations. I don't get why you're getting thumbs down.
@Franz People knee-jerking thinking that what has happened to primary public education in the U.S. would then happen to its colleges and universities. They're both messed up.
@Franz Education won't stop atrocities. They are a symptom of a larger problem. Our society is corrupt.
cool. Why not, if they offer them for sports?
@Trajan But it would lessen, I think, the rate of such atrocities. If people were more educated, they wouldn't so readily believe a fascist's racist ideologies. By having the knowledge, for instance, that this approach had been utilized in the past that led to disastrous consequences, people would be more equipped to recognize and fight against bigotry and discrimination.
But you are correct in pointing to the fact that corruption is a problem, if not the biggest. We need to get money out politics. Maybe then our representatives would actually represent us, the people, rather than those who line their pockets.
@KingBowser86 Don't know that that's knee-jerking. Seems like a reasonable fear. Of course, the problems with our public education system have more than one cause.
@Dr_Corndog Granted, that's the only reason it'd be knee-jerking, is because it is multi-faceted (some of which might even get fixed in the transition, maybe). Similar to how the U.S. couldn't possibly socialize medical care at this moment because the clinics that were made by foreign investors would immediately shut down and then we'd have far, far worse and more lethal waits than the nations that currently do so. And that's based on analyses from both within and outside of the U.S.
And this is exactly why I’m extremely thankful for free higher education. I’m not great at Smash or any sort of sport really and there’s no chance I could afford my fees even down in England so having my tuition fees free is the only reason I’m currently studying towards a degree.
I wouldn't mind trying out haha
Lol anything to stop US colleges being about academic merit.
The number of well-educated people that don’t know the difference between a fascist, a narcissistic reality TV star with no real ideology (other than protectionism - limit immigration and put tariffs on everything), and practically anyone to the right of Joe Biden doesn’t really give me much confidence in the value of giving everyone a taxpayer funded liberal arts degree.
@Dezzy So you’d rather working class people, the ones that miss out on college as they’re competing against millions just like them, just didn’t go to college? For many, this is the only way they can go, through sports and now eSports. Nothing about the US system is about academic merit, it’s entirely stacked towards people that can afford it.
@nessisonett
It's almost as if they should do scholarships for poor people who do well in academia, rather than people who do well at Smash Bros.
Urgh what utter stupidity.
@PBandSmelly Ah yes, the classic "I'm terrible at this so clearly everyone who's good does nothing else with their time". Deliciously bitter.
@Dezzy They do, except millions of people are up for only a few scholarships. This is another path and unless the colleges provide more places for non fee-paying students, which they won’t, it remains one of the few ways the working class can get a degree.
My old self is just floored that people these days can get scholarships for playing video games. It's something I joked about growing up in the 80s, never thought I'd see the day. I'm jealous of today's youth. It's great.
This is wonderful news! I hope this becomes more and more common!
This is a wonderful way to connect our hobbies to our futures. We give people scholarships for playing sports, so why not video games too? And not just video games, we should have scholarships for all sorts of hobbies! We should encourage people to develop their talents and hobbies. Art, games, sports, whatever!
Wow, a scholarship that actually means something
2.0 minimum GPA? That's... super sad
Can I get a scholarship for being incredibly good at Hungry Hungry Hippos?
My State is pretty insane, not gonna lie.
A 2.0 GPA? Not exactly aspiring toward excellence, are they?
That's the lowest minimum GPA I've ever seen.
This gives me hope that my 9 year old, who kicks my butt at smash, may just have a future in the gaming world. I wish this kind of stuff existed 20 years ago.
This is a great opportunity for students who like Mario. Students now have many opportunities for further education. They can even buy research papers online. This can be done on the website https://papersowl.com/buy-research-paper Millions of students around the world use such educational resources to improve their skills.
Yeah, absolutely agree with the previous commentator but I also my add that the same kind of issue you may check at https://eduloh.com/eduzaurus-com-review/, thanks for the article!
Thank you for the eduzaurus source! I have heard about it, but I couldn't find it. Now after more than 4 years, I have it. Thanks!!
