Re: UK Charts: There's No Stopping Mario Kart World And Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

@prw_88 You have to keep in mind that there are two different consumer groups involved here (if not more).

First we have the GAMERS. These are the consumers like you and me that know the games in and out, front to back, exactly where each power up or collectable is in a game, etc. We are the gamers that buy consoles and games at release because "duh why wouldn't you".

Then there is the other consumer group. These are the consumers that buy their game systems for a little casual gaming, party games, for their grand children to play when visiting, etc. This is a very large consumer group. This is the consumer group that basically made the Wii in to a house hold name. Likewise, this is the consumer group that continues to buy Switch, Switch Lite, and games that are very old at this point like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Here's what I guess is happening.

The Mario Kart World commercials have been hitting everywhere like mad. You can't watch a video with out eventually getting a MKW commercial.

The second group of consumers are getting inundated with these MKW commercials. A lot of them probably never owned Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or even know much about it. They have a Switch because they bought it for party games or that one game their grand kids just have to play every time they visit.

Now that they have been advertised to over and over and over on MKW, they go looking to find out more about it. And... they find that it is not available for their Switch. But... there's this MK8D that IS AVAILABLE and it has reviews praising how great and amazing the game is (from years ago) on the Switch.

So... in leu of buying MKW, they buy MK8D... because it runs on their Switch. These are not people that are going to go buy a Switch 2 just to play MKW.

Re: UK Charts: There's No Stopping Mario Kart World And Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

@Woodyshoe I think you nailed it on the head there.

I suspect that the Switch2 is mainly being seen as a Switch Pro for most people. The huge surge of purchases for the Switch 2 at its release could potentially drop down to that of the PS5 Pro eventually as people that LIKE their Switch a lot don't necessarily like it enough to spend $500+ dollars to get what essentially is the Switch Pro.

I think the thing that will drive the decision to make the leap from Switch to Switch 2 is going to be how good and enticing the first party Switch 2 exclusive games turn out to be.

That being said, if it's just a couple games, that might not be enough to get a lot of people to plop down their money to make the upgrade to Switch 2 at least for a few years more.

I look at this like what we saw with the Wii and WiiU. The WiiU was arguably a leap forward for Wii consumers. But... not a lot of people that owned a Wii spent the money to get that WiiU.

I know many relatives and friends that still have their Wii and never bought a WiiU. Most of my friends and relatives that own a Switch have no intention of buying a Switch 2. It has nothing to do with it not being good enough. It has everything to do with the fact that the Switch (just like the Wii) served a purpose for them as a fun family/party gaming system they could play every now and then. They don't intend to buy a Switch 2 anytime soon (or ever really), unless it got super cheap and was a no brainer to replace their existing Switch.

Re: UK Charts: There's No Stopping Mario Kart World And Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

@Medic_alert Interesting, so can you buy the S1 version of Hogwartz, purchase the upgrade for S2, and then return the S1 version and the S2 version continue to work? Something about that seems wrong, but we are talking about the world of magic here lol.

I wonder if it ever makes you reinsert the S1 version of Hogwarts in the future.

Re: UK Charts: There's No Stopping Mario Kart World And Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

Number 3 LOL!

But seriously, I don't think it should be a surprise to anyone that the main launch title for the next generation of a VERY popular console machine is topping sales charts. It's a no brainer.

The Nintendo Switch was a highly popular console that has continued to sell well for a very long time. They could put out poop in a box and as long as it had the word Switch on it, it would sale a ton the first year.

This is the launch title for that console, so... yeah. Of course it is going to sell a ton.

Re: Nintendo's Strict Policy On MiG Carts Is Creating A Problem For Secondhand Switch 2 Buyers

PharoneTheGnome

@KingMike that is a really good point. How does the bricking of these systems effect the ability to play Game Key Card cartidges for the unlucky individual that buys a banned Switch2 in the future (with out knowing it was banned)?

If this makes it so you can not play a Game Key Card game simply because the system can not go online to download the game that the game key card is for, then they have effectively BRICKED the system. That definitely should be protected by consumer protection laws in many countries.

Re: Nintendo's Strict Policy On MiG Carts Is Creating A Problem For Secondhand Switch 2 Buyers

PharoneTheGnome

Pirating is bad. I get that.

Bricking hardware because some idiot used pirated software is also bad though. Someone paid money to buy that piece of hardware, and no company should have the ability to destroy a purchased product AFTER it is paid for.

Nintendo should ban the account, but it should not brick the system.

There should be consumer protection laws to protect against that sort of thing. Of course, no consumer is going to have the money to fight Nintendo in court though. Therefore, some country's AG should take it upon themself to sue Nintendo on behalf of all consumers affected by their actions.

Companies should NOT have the right to destroy a product that someone has bought. It is unethical and straight up wrong.

Again, piracy is WRONG. Destroying paid-for products by the company who sold the product to a consumer is ALSO WRONG.

Re: Opinion: I Never Felt True Nostalgia Until I Played GameCube On Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

Gamecube on the Switch2 hit your nostalgia feelers becuase it is the point in history that meant the most to you. For some of us that was Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo.

For me, it was the Nintendo Entertainment System. That was my first big home console, and playing Excitebike was my nostalgia overload. The only other game that really hits the nostalgia for me as far as Nintendo is RC Pro Am.

My true nostalgia though is the Commodore 64c. C=64 will always be more special to me than any console machine.

It all has to do with the generation you grew up in and when you first got your true game that you loved. Pool of Radiance on the C=64 was that for me.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"

PharoneTheGnome

Reality is that people are buying the Switch 2 for one reason... First party games.

That's it.

If you can play the game on any other console, you will play it there.

Why do you think the new Mario Kart World and DK Bananaza are Switch2 only titles? They could have made Switch1 versions.

They chose not to because they know millions will buy them for their EXISTING Switch1 systems rather than buying a Switch2 just to play those games.

This isn't rocket science here people. Nintendo knows they have to force you to buy the new system in order to play their new first party games OR the vast majority will wait until later to decide if they want to upgrade to the new system.

It's common business tactics.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"

PharoneTheGnome

Not sure why this would be a surprise for anyone.

Why would you buy Cyberpunk 2077 to play on Nintendo Switch 2 when you already have it on the PS5 which will technically run it BETTER than the Switch 2 purely because the PS5 has superior hardware?

The only reason to buy it on Switch2 is if you want to play it on the go OR you don't own another current generation console like PS5 or Xbox.

And, even then, people don't talk about it much, but the PS5 does have a handheld you can play these games on. They stream from your PS5 to the handheld.

Before you say that is lame streaming stuff, you praised the fact that DK Bananza streamed the game to the Switch1.

Re: "If You're A Real Fan, You'll Find A Way" - Borderlands 4 Dev Gives Tone Deaf Response To Price Concerns

PharoneTheGnome

I would say that is the stupidest thing I have ever seen someone say at that level in a game company, but...

"You think you do, but you don't"... Blizzard

"Casuals don't deserve to kill Nagafen"... Daybreak Games

It's kinda funny just how incredibly stupid some of the people are that run game development companies. It's almost as if they have game design/development knowledge but absolutely zero business knowledge.... oh hmmm

Re: Talking Point: The Switch 2 Pre-Order Situation Sucks, But Can Nintendo Do Anything About It?

PharoneTheGnome

Smartest thing you could do is go to the Nintendo site, login to your account, and click the button to be put on the list for preorder directly from Nintendo.

This is exactly how I bought my PS5 back during the period where it was completely impossible to buy one in store or online. Sony offered the same thing where you login to your account and select that you are interested in purchasing when one comes available.

With in 3 months, I got an email from Sony, logged in to make my purchase, and it showed up in the mail that week. I dealt with zero scalpers or hassles.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Tells Studios "Do Not Underestimate The Physical Edition"

PharoneTheGnome

The plain and simple fact is that physical does matter to a ton of gamers. If that was not true, then companies like Limited Run Games would not exist.

The fact that multiple companies now exist making physical versions of download-only games is proof that physical game ownership is important to a large swath of consumers.

It's really that simple.

The fact that Nintendo seems to think otherwise is absolutely astonishing considering how massive the retro market is when i comes to Nintendo products. It's almost like someone at the top has lost touch with reality.

Re: How Do Nintendo Switch 2 Virtual Game Cards Work? - Game Transfer & Lending Guide

PharoneTheGnome

This is just so silly. It's not a physical purchase and it's not a digital purchase. It's some sort of hybrid that has the worst of both worlds; requiring a cartridge to install the game but not having the actual game on the cartridge to install.

I just can't imagine the initial discussion at Nintendo when this was brought up. I guarantee you there was at least a week long argument about the fact that this new kind of product doesn't have any real reason to exist.

It's a solution to a non-existent problem. Not one single person in the history of gaming has thought, "I sure with I had a physical game cartridge that doesn't have the game actually on the cartridge but will require me to put the cartridge in to install the game that it will actually download from the internet." No one. Ever.

It's absolutely laughable.

Re: Random: Missed Out On A Switch 2 Pre-Order? Sakurai Has The Perfect Solution

PharoneTheGnome

Imagine, if you will, a world where you go to sleep knowing the Switch 2 is coming out this year, and wake up in a world not remembering it until this same time next year.

In that second world you woke up in, when you go to buy your Switch 2 (a year after actual release), you find plenty of stock, more awesome games made just for it, and great deals.

You missed a year of Switch 2, but was it really a bad thing considering you bought in after all the good stuff is ready to be played?

Just a thought.

Re: Nintendo Today Video Showcases The New Switch 2 Pro Controller

PharoneTheGnome

I personally love my Switch Pro controller. I think it is one of the best feeling controllers I have ever had for any game machine. The only controller I think competes with it (to me) is the Playstation 5 controller.

If I ever buy a Switch 2, I will buy the Switch 2 Pro controller just because of how much I love the original Switch Pro controller.

Re: Analyst Predicts Record-Breaking Launch Numbers For Switch 2

PharoneTheGnome

It's going to break records initially because the bots are buying up preorders to sell the systems for twice as much this Christmas to the parents that have to get one for their kids.

Scalpers have ruined the gaming industry and turned it in to a horrible existence.

What ever happened to the days of simply being able to go down to a GameStop and plucking down the money to preorder something and not having to be faster than a bot at midnight to have a chance to preorder something?

I can't stand all the greed that our world seems to thrive on these days.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Release

PharoneTheGnome

Oh and by the way, yes. I do play Pokemon Aqua Sapphire on my 3DS today. It's the current game I am playing on my 3DS right now.

Just because a company declares a game system is old and not worth their time anymore does NOT make that game system nor the games that were made for it instantly become garbage. Some older games are better than some of the stuff being put out today.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Release

PharoneTheGnome

Imagine that this existed back during the Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, DS, and 3DS eras.

Now imagine grabbing one of those games off your shelf to play today.

Let's say you wanted to play Pokemon Aqua Sapphire on your 3DS. You grab the box off your shelf, get the cartridge out of it, pop it in your 3DS to play it, and remember that you had to remove it from you 3DS back in the day because you needed more room to play a different game.

You got the physical cartridge. No problem. Start the game, and hmmm... that's odd. It doesn't work. Oh yeah... you needed the Nintendo 3DS service to be up and running to be able to download that game.... and... it's gone now. Uh oh.

The reality about downloaded games is that ALL gaming services go offline eventually. Every company takes down their servers at some point.

Playstation shut down the PS Vita. Nintendo shut down the 3DS and WiiU. They all do it.

Buying a game key card for Switch 2 is not buying a game. It is renting a game until the servers are shut down for good. You do NOT own the game your "bought".

This is why I do not and will not support these game key cards. Enjoy paying upwards of $70 to rent a game. I'll pass.

Re: The Switch 2's New Magnetic Joy-Con Originally Didn't Have A Release Button

PharoneTheGnome

I really like the idea of the magnets. I just hope that it holds up over time with a lot o usage. I'd hate to see a situation occur like we had with the controller drift of the original Switch.

Pushing the envelope of technology is great until it becomes something that was great on paper and doesn't end up lasting very long in implementation.

Case in point for pushing technologies edge and getting it right is... the 3DS. The 3DS is still an amazing machine that is highly capable of playing a wide assortment of fun games. People are finding that not only is it fantastic for what it was designed for, but it also is working amazingly as a retro emulation machine able to play every Nintendo handheld game ever made as well as other system up to PS1.

The 3DS was way ahead of its time, and the ONLY reason it is now discontinued tech is because Nintendo CHOSE to go in a different direction with Switch. There's nothing wrong with the 3DS. A refreshed 3DS with faster chips, higher resolution and brighter screen, and a modern battery that could last a lot longer would sell today easily in the millions. I'd buy one in a heart beat.
