Earlier this week, we shared the news that a remake of Game Boy Advance title Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town had been confirmed for release in Japan. Now, we have our first proper look at the game thanks to a new trailer and screenshots.
Officially titled Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, the game has been described as "a complete remake that will let series fans revisit the charming world of Mineral Town, while also introducing it to a new generation of farmers". Players will grow crops, take care of animals, and build relationships with villagers.
You can check out the brand new screenshots below.
The news comes alongside confirmation that the game will launch across North America, Europe and Australia. North American publishing will be handled by XSEED Games, while Marvelous will cover Europe and Australia.
No release date has been confirmed for those territories just yet, but Japan will be getting it 17th October.

Mayor Thomas ?! 🤪
Is that your new looks ?! 😲
Looks generic as hell.
Not sure what to think. FoMT was my favorite Harvest Moon title, and I really enjoyed the more recent Story of Seasons titles, but I think this looks really bad. Hope it plays well.
After Star Dew Valley this series has been looking second rate, but I actually have interest in this game! Might be hitting my nostalgia nerve haha
Looks like a 3ds game
Never played any Story of seasons, but I am way more interested in Rune Factory.
Only going by the screens and it looks so half arsed and cookie cutter. The original GBA game many many years onwards had a way better art style than this. This looks like a first gen smartphone game.
Then you have gameplay and it looks like its using the other recent games engine which was functional at best and as much as I loved the original back in the day, Stardew Valley was initially a Harvest Moon knock off at the start of development and then just eclipsed every aspect once it came out and is still the best of its type. It simply did everything better than any HM game so much so I cannot play a single one of them now...aside from Rune Factory. When it comes to Harvest Moon, Marvelous hasnt done anything to the series than make it worse than the old games. They've not even bothered to look at Stardew to see where they can go and how they can improve, hey just do the bare minimum and shovel out a new games every couple of years and just hope the fan base and name recognition sells it. They should really do what ConcernedApe did and spend a few years perfecting it, carry on building on it and then do something new.
Hopefully the next none port Rune Factory has more attention given to it than this.
This looks boring. Have they even seen Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing? Farming and running into town to talk to one dimensional NPCs is not cutting it anymore for Sandbox simulation games. The graphics also look jagged and uninspired.
This just looks awful, looks worse in every way compared too the 3d's games. Well looks like stardew is still king and will be for a long time if this crap is the only competition
Got real excited, then immediately disappointed. I only associate this game as "Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town" so I won't call it anything else. But, I am letdown the remaster is very low effort. And also, that Harvest Moon 64 was not the chosen one to be remastered. I always did prefer that one over Back to Nature.
If this is cheap and at least has the same gameplay, remastered soundtrack and story, as well as running at 60fps (I see no reason why this should not be able to, but 30fps would be real sad when you consider how bad this looks for a console game), then I will consider it because the original Friends of Mineral Town is very memorable to me and I still have fond memories of playing and loving the atmosphere.
I would much rather the Switch gets the original Friends of Mineral Town, as well as Harvest Moon 64, than remasters if they are going to look like this. Even Magical Melody looks better than this.
I don't understand all the negative comments here. 😕
For me it looks quite interesting. 😀
Maybe not as great as previous Bokujou Monogatari, but at least it looked like Pokemon Let's Go style. 😅
I will keep my eyes on it.
Looks like it is a new cast of characters?
Anyway I’m just so glad to see a return to the retro style, I’ve been waiting for them to make another game like this for a long time!
@itslukec Same here!
I will 100% get this. That being said...one of my problems with the Bokujou Monogatari series in recent years has been the additions that take away from the core of the series in my opinion. This may be just an old man rant, but I much prefer the older games and their simplicity such as HM64, FoMT, BTN, etc. I don't want to have a lion for a pet or ride around on a llama.
It seems as though they're adding new animals to the core FoMT game here. Different colored cows? That's fine with me, because they will still produce a product. But a capybara (or at least that's what it looks like)? Unless I can sell it for meat, what's the point? I don't care how cute it is, I want some actual utility from something I have to feed every day...my dog or cat is enough cuteness for me, and you generally don't have to actually feed them. Stardew Valley had interesting animals besides cow/chicken/sheep too, but those all produced a product. Don't ruin the simplistic charm of this game, Marvelous. Still not sold on the art style, but oh well. It looks like FoMT with a Magical Melody skin.
I want yokai watch 4 western release soon!
It's easy to sum up. This game will be better than anything Natsume makes in the farming sim genre but won't be anywhere near as good as Stardew Valley. Stardew Valley is my go to now and I just long for the eventual sequel.
Got excited when I heard about it since I never played the original, but seriously, WHY do so many games these days have that crappy cheap mobile game look?
I loved this game....im so excited to be able to fish herrings that are 25 cm big.
I must be the only person in the world not enthralled with Stardew Valley. I keep trying it but it just doesn't scratch the SoS/original HM itch. I want to love it, I just don't.
I'm looking forward to this one.
Super interested in this, even if the anime art style throws me off a bit. Hopefully it does justice to the original.
Not my favorite Bokumono but a gem nonetheless. Will be getting. As much as I adore stardew valley it still feels a little "off" compared to Bokumono for me. I am looking forward to stardew 2 though...if that ever happens.
(interesting use of the magical melody artstyle though. )
IDK - I have got story of seasons 1 and 2 and rune factory 1-3, and the wii harvest moon game. Haven't been into farming lately
Everyone seems to feel so negatively towards this title, but I'm really looking forward to it. I think the art style is warm and cozy, and I'm happy to see all the effort that was put into the little (and big) details. I've been playing Harvest Moon since I was very small, and I think this looks like a great blend of all the things that Made Mineral Town such a memorable title with some of the modernization that SOS has brought to the series. Calling this a glorified smart phone game is pretty harsh. A glorified (and literal) smartphone game is Harvest Moon Light of Hope (and everything else Natsume has published under the HM title in recent years.) It's not necessarily the art direction I thought they'd go in for the next SOS installment, but I think it looks very welcoming, and I'm incredibly excited to play this title when it comes to the west. I loved Stardew Valley, and still do, but hearing everyone rag on every other farming sim title that comes to the west simply because it isn't SDV is getting pretty old. I can't wait to add this title to my collection, and play it for a long time to come. The team making this game is the same team that made the original, artist and all, and I don't think they would let this game be a disappointing remake of one of their most popular titles. Give it some love, and give it a chance.
I'm warming up to the art style (even if that Karen is... not Karen), but I can't shrug the feeling that it looks like a budget title, and it'll apparently be full price, at least in Japan. That would feel pretty steep.
Apparently this is the first of a "reunion series", so we should be expecting more remakes in the future. Keeping my fingers crossed for a 64 remake with character designs that are closer to the original.
@k8sMum You're not alone. Every time I hear people raving about SV, I try it again because "maybe this time it'll click", but it just never does for me.
I was more into the Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns arts style but hey its a remake of the original but i an waiting for their next mainline game of Story of Seasons, i hope that is still coming after the Doraemon one. At first i was also skeptical on buying this but after knowing this is still from Marvelous then i know this game is in good hands unlike the Harvest Moon Light Edition thingy. I do hope they introduce new things/mechanics/animals/cutscenes/events even though this is based on the original story.
Was hoping the art design was a little more "charming" like the older games. This makes me feel like they're going to end up leaning more towards the same flash game feel of the current Harvest Moon title. I haven't found anyone that thinks those graphics are even considered good.
@Morpheel I think its the same. I can see Karen there, Popuri, Rick and Cliff on the screenshots
They made Karen look so innocent here unlike the Karen i knew who likes wine haha! Popuri is much more cutier (if thats a word). Rick looks more intelligent now unlike the previous odd look of him. And Cliff well hes the same. LOL
@Gelo Yeah they just made them look rather different. And it's possible they could change some names too, due to the change in localization studios.
I guess we gotta wait and see. It could feel like Mineral Town but with slightly different people in similar roles.
A lot of people are comparing this to Stardew Valley and I find that kinda funny. ConcernedApe's favorite Harvest Moon game was Back to Nature, and Friends of Mineral Town was a GBA port of BTN. That's why so many of us who grew up loving BTN/FOMT/MFOMT resonated with Stardew so much. It took the things we loved about those older games and expanded on them instead of adding stuff just for the sake of it.
I tried playing Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons games after FOMT and none of them ever really felt right. So when I look at the art style and had about them adding stuff it leaves me feeling a little concerned. I want to get this and love it and finally get to go home to Mineral Town, but I can hear the old saying "you can't go home" in the back of my mind. I just keep saying over and over "please be good please be good please be good".
I think it looks a little bit too much like the GBA game, great as it is, for a remake. Like it's not ambitious enough. Will you be able to change the camera angle? Or customize your avatar? I've enjoyed what I've played of the original, but side by side I'll take either of the 3DS story of seasons games.
The Doraemon one looks way better...
Take this back and give us Animal Parade.
Even if this is just a copy of the original with HD visuals it will still be a great game. Though I suspect it will add more. The people hating on it are fools.
I don't think this looks bad but it's definitely a handheld Harvest Moon, similar to the DS and 3DS games. I feel like we're all ready for a console Harvest Moon. The last one was Animal Parade for Wii (which is still my favourite HM to this day) and I want to see something more like that. This is playing it safe to be sure.
I hope there is a new one in the making as well.
I just want a remake of A wonderful life on switch. Please? I miss my Nami! cries
@k8sMum I honestly could never get into it either. I got about three days worth of gameplay before giving up and getting bored.
After losing my sword day one after dying, that aspect was gone for me. Anything else just kind of sucked. People are complaining about HM characters, but their really wasn't anything special about SV's characters either, they moved less than HM! Same with graphics, they rewlly weren't anything special
Unpopular opinion. The art style is really cute and I quite enjoy it. Sure, it looks much more cartoony and chibi and is a downgrade from SOS and Trio of Towns, but it kind of... works.
The graphics remind me a lot of the DS games and Magical Melody (style of DS, with a chibi feel)
Character redesigns are iffy. Karen and Gray were absolutely ruined in uniqueness and are bland now. Kappa is... unique to say the least, but he looks like a goth poet. The other redesigns seem minor or ok to me.
@Wildheart970 It looks like a modernized Back to Nature, which was the original incarnation of Friends of Mineral Town.
Definitely looking forward to this one as long as they stick to the core gameplay and not much it up with the building and whatnot. I loved this game back in the day and I found the first Story of Seasons to be pretty entertaining. Friends of Mineral Town is what made a Harvest Moon fan of me.
Looks cute, but also looks boring to me. Next
@k8sMum @Verg make that three with Stardew Valley. I got it solely for its multiplayer and have chucked > 100 hours into it but I always thought I'm the only HM/SoS fan who isn't on the SV hype train. Not to imply that it were a bad game since it certainly isn't, but loving HM/SoS is exactly why SV doesn't work for me as well instead of the other way round. It just misses/fails at what makes me enjoy that franchise in the first place.
As for the game at hand... hoo boy. MFoMT is one of my most favourite HM games and from what I know (M)FoMT is considered to be one of the best entries so it's great that it's getting a remake. But to be honest the art style feels very different to me. Those character portraits look more like fanart rather than official - even more so when you take 3DS HM/SoS' gorgeous portraits into account or FoMT's charming style - and it doesn't help that they've changed characters' looks so much in some cases (compare GBA and remake Carter), though I will say that some actually look better than before.
I will definitely keep an eye on this, because I love MFoMT with all my heart and am genuinely interested in getting this, but I'm too hesitant to make it a day one purchase. I'm a little shaken by that art style feeling so very different while knowing what they're capable of but I'll wait and see how the game itself turns out all in all which I hope will be well.
Looks fine to me. Honestly don't understand how people can complain about how the characters look like and rave about Stardew Valley. The characters on Stardew Valley look terrible to me. It's a cute game but I can't stand the way it looks so never played it after getting it on my Switch. At least on this game the characters resemble humans and not a bunch of weird shaped things running around.
Looks good, I've been wanting a nice farming game since Stardew became automated and redundant and I got 4+ years into Trio of Towns. It's unfortunate that the comments don't know the ways Story of Seasons and Stardew are both good and bad. When it comes to farming, writing, and production, Story of Seasons is leagues more developed. Stardew is kind of just more streamlined, like a jack-of-all-trades.
My sister had More Friends of Mineral Town, I never got to play it myself, so this and Rune Factory 5 will be great.
Bring back something like A Wonderful Life/Another Wonderful Life! These kids don't know what they're missing
That game had so much heart and magic to it.
I enjoy the realistic art style.
Something like Zelda BoTW
The realistic characters, animals, and plants are great... its important for me to ride a horse in a game that looks like a horse, not a chunky little pony. And foraging plants/mushrooms that look realistic is cool. Animal Crossing/Stardew do this well.
I wish I could make video games.
