Loving Nintendo since 1989!

When Mario RPG was first released, it cost the equivalent of around $120. Nearly two decades later, a lovely remake of it is half that and people still complain... little wonder that companies are moving ever more towards f2p and micro transactions, people can't do numbers properly and expect games to continue costing the same forever seemingly.

Actually really loved this console after trying it out at a kiosk back in the day. When all the stores were practically giving them away for around $20 in 1996, that was the time to snag one. And for that price there was definitely some fun to be had.

At current prices though? It's a hard pass. Sadly I missed out grabbing one in 1996 at the give-away prices and ended up just never having one. Looking at the going rates, the only thought that comes to mind is "nah". Would still love one someday though.

@JohnnyMind Just throwing out the Hylian Shield edition to demonstrate the effort Nintendo put into some of their special edition consoles... but yes, clearly those were extremely special pieces of work. I would still argue they have actually become lazier though, and not simply continuing standard practice. Consider DS era, if a console was made a certain color they would often take the effort to color most everything else as well: inside, buttons, stylus, etc. Even the early 3DS models had more effort put into their variations.

But over time they likely realized it's cheaper to just swap out the face plates, put it in a newly printed box and call it a special edition. People would buy it anyway.

@JohnnyMind The screen bevel can be decorated with a unique design. It would also be possible to install different colored buttons for further effect. All this would of course be more effort and more money... and that's the problem with a lot of Nintendo's special edition consoles--especially now but also in the past--they don't want to spend a little extra to make something truly special. Heck a lot of the later New 3DS XL SE consoles were just lazy faceplate swaps, and now the trend continues with most of the SE Switches just being a set of different colored joy-cons (which are often available separately anyway), maybe a custom dock... and a unique back, if we're lucky. But I do also get it, there is little business incentive, why put in so much effort when Switches are practically flying off shelves.

Sigh. Remember the Hylian Shield special edition of the New 2DS XL? Now that was an exquisite piece of gaming sculpture. Some of the other New 2DS XL SE consoles were pretty sweet as well, like the Japan-only Metal Slime edition. Maybe these consoles kinda spoiled my expectations.

Maybe Nintendo will do a proper special edition someday... as in, having the console front decorated in some meaningful way. So far all we've gotten are special colored joycons and maybe some design work on the back. Nothing on the front of the console to remind us that there is something special in our hands.
