Update: It appears Bandai Namco has restocked in Europe since this story went live.
Original Article: In June, Bandai Namco surprised us with the announcement of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition was coming to the Switch. Earlier this month, we then found out the release date, with the game scheduled to arrive on 11th January 2019. This update was delivered in the form of a tweet alongside the reveal of a lovely "special edition" steelbook.
Bandai Namco has now revealed a limited anniversary bundle for the game's US release, containing the game, a memorial artbook, steelbook case, and exclusive diorama display case including 3 acrylic character key chains. This also led to some confusion after fans noticed the game's box art in the photo mentioned a download was required. Bandai Namco explained this was not the case:
The premium bundle for Europe reassured fans all was well:
It appears both bundles have sold out almost immediately, with both the American and European official websites hammered. Were you lucky enough to pick up one of these anniversary bundles when they were revealed? Tell us in the comments below.

Going digital, but I'm so happy to see the series doing well. I'd love to see some releases of the Japan-exclusive titles in the future.
This is the first I’ve learned of the game coming to Switch here wtf
Of course it sold out fast, that's how you do a special edition!
I'm not into special editions of games as I dont have the space for such things but I sure do wish I got the Octopath one. Never thought I would like the game as much as I did and that music!
I've only played one Tales game so hopefully this will get me back into the series.
...could we get some of the PS3 Tales games/remasters too? Having a collection of FF and Tales on Switch would be awesome!
Going by recent info, it looks like the NA physical edition will require a download while the European edition won't.
Edit, Bandai Namco confirmed it won't in fact require an additional download. They originally confirmed the EU version won't when asked if the NA and EU version will require an extra download, just adding to the confusion.
I'll just buy the regular physical edition as I don't need all those other junks.
@Flowerlark Its pretty late where I am currently (almost 3am) but I decided to check if I could pre order it after seeing this article and my order went through. To be fair I pre ordered the PS4 version but I checked the Switch version as well and it let me add to my cart so you may want to check it now, it might just work for you.
Sad face. Would have loved the bundle..
@javiboy2 Thanks for this- I checked again just now and it's showing in stock on Switch! Missed out yesterday so very thankful
@Flowerlark I feel you on that. Tbh what I normally do is buy the components separately from ebay. It usually takes a few months or so of searching but I complete the whole set and it's often cheaper than just buying it whole.
@Cogsworth Glad I could be of help!
I will be buying this for sure. But the regular edition.
@Kimyonaakuma I think before anything, they should port Tales of Hearts R from the Vita because I don't want to have to buy a Vita just for that one game and Persona 4 Golden.
@Liam_Doolan The European version of the anniversary bundle has not, in fact, sold out. I just lazily pre-ordered it no problem.
I.... I didn't even know this existed.
EDIT: Hm, I just checked and I can preorder for any console still. Did they up the amount they are going to make based on demand or something?
@Grawbad Well if you're in Europe, you can grab it if you want. It's not sold out at all for Switch.
@MonkeyKing Oh yeah I forgot about Hearts R! I wouldn't mind Persona 4 Golden either now that you've mentioned it
When this was announced at E3 I saw it as one of those games that filled out an empty Switch calendar. But since then so much other stuff has been revealed, I'm not sure that it has a place in my schedule anymore.
@Kimyonaakuma P4G would be nice to see, but if they do decide to port it, I doubt it would be on anything other than the PS4.
I just bought one on EU store so definitely not sold out there, probably just the first batch was finished
I just want the standard edition, but thank you BanNam for putting the full game on the cart. See, this is the kind of behaviour I want to support, not Bethesda's or 2K's hddfuy practices (note that I DID get Skyrim since it was complete, when it is, I'll put my money where my mouth is)
Guess I'll have to get in line and hope I get a bundle at Nintendo NY…
Got mine. As long as the entire game is on the game cartridge I'm happy to support ports like Tales of Vesperia.
I haven't even seen pre-orders for this in Canada yet.
*EDIT - ok it's exclusive to the Bandai Namco store. Too bad they're U.S. based. With NAFTA up in the air and the dollar conversion not that great, add on import charges on top of already expensive shipping and I don't think this set is worth the LARGE chunk of change required to buy. Guess I'll be getting a standard edition, either physically or digitally off the eShop. Still excited this game is coming to the Switch. I just wish developers like Bandai Namco and Square Enix would stop excluding special editions from being pre-orderable from standard retailers. Especially since the world is moving increasingly to tariff-based protectionism. It's very difficult now to pre-order games direct from the developers if they don't have physical office spaces in every single country.
does the Europe version ship to the US?
@javiboy2 Thank you for the info mate.
@Flowerlark I completely agree with you on limited editions. I get frustrated because I love special editions but they are often times so hard to get due to how few copies that companies make, especially Nintendo.
I also hate when people retort "hurr durr it's a limited edition, what did you expect". I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to have more than 2-3 days to buy a version of a product that doesn't launch until January of next year
I thought about it for a few minute but decided against it since I already have the game on the 360. I might pick up the standard edition eventually but I'm going to cut back on the special editions as I would rather have more games with that money.
I pre ordered it a month ago before they really announced a definitive edition. I’m so glad this is coming to the Switch. I haven’t played this game since I got the red ring of death on my 360 out of warranty and sold everything I had for it.
I'm planning on getting the standard edition. The US special edition is pretty pitiful, after all. Planning on getting the Switch and Xbox 1 versions.
Wait how is it sold out? I live in the US and I literally just preordered the Anniversary Bundle for PS4 from the Bandai Namco Store website. I also checked and I can still add the Switch Anniversary Bundle to my cart too. Did the decide to make more in the US too like they did in Europe because of high demand or something?
