Prior to the release of Super Mario Run on mobile, it might have been a shock to see Mario in an iPhone commercial. Nowadays, it's not as surprising. To promote it's new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Apple has released a commercial about upsizing - with Mario making an appearance in it just after the halfway mark.
Titled "Growth Spurt" the short one-minute clip shows food, objects, and even pets growing in size - to help drive home the point Apple's new device is a lot bigger than past models. Mario's inclusion in the commercial makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, though, the mushroom behind the act is not credited.
Super Mario Run was originally released on the Apple Store for iOS devices in December 2016. This followed with its release on Google Play in March 2017. In July this year, Sensor Tower revealed it had netted about $60 million in profits from worldwide player spending since its launch.
Take a look at the clip above and tell us in the comments if you're still playing Super Mario Run.

I don't play any mobile games, but that was funny to see anything can be bigger than before due to the power of Mushroom.
what an awful ad
Well contextually, Mario made sense there. Congratulations to Apple for doing a thing! Now if they could put their fast chargers in the box with their phone like every other phone manufacturer...
Edit: Not putting the charger in the box with the product - all of a sudden I see the connection between Apple & Nintendo.
Kinda clickbait
@DanteSolablood GASP, IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!
To compensate for our lack of actual new things on the phone, we will show you a game available on android!
The whole ad is a reference to the price of the phone
The commercial is fun to me, and of course the reference of Mario and the Mega Mushroom; However, in my opinion, I still do not convince myself to get an Apple product, I do not need to explain, I do not want to extend the text.
@Yosheel
Totally thumbs up, XD
points to crotch
@MaxlRoseGNR Kinda? He showed up for 2 seconds. That`s not BIG in any world. Totally click bait.
just horrible
The Nintendo home consoles do not have enough Mario platform/adventure games. Usually just one per console with the exception of the Wii.
Ok, we get party, sport and other games with Mario in them but very few platformers. Using the Odyssey engine I'm sure Nintendo could create Odyssey 2 reasonable quickly. Or have a third party working one a new game so we have something new every two years.
This would gross as much £¥$¢ as a mobile game and would stop Mario having to be compromised.
I like it.
Apple’s ads are so amazing, portraying feelings and usually not even showing the product until right up to the end... Mario’s inclusion is a bit random in this one but still nice
I still play Mario Run on my phone. It’s a fun game for a 5 min pass time. Using Mario in the AD makes sense as the Max model is much bigger, I like this Apple ad.
@zool People are already criticising Nintendo for releasing the same game over and over. Which is unfair imo, almost every Mario-Plattformer feels unique in some way (except for the lazier NSMB titles, maybe) and is no comparison to Ubisoft with AC or EA with their sports series.
But still, a new Mario every two years would be too much. People would tire out at some point and Mario could face the same fade as Sonic the Hedgehog...
Also... does this mean SMR will get a Mega Mushroom update?
When thinking of Mario, phones and enlarging stuff, we all know what comes to mind, right @shaneoh?

And yes, I would have put the gif with Mario and the cell phone from Luigi's Ballad, but I can't seem to even find a still image from that scene.
@AlexSora89

My mushroom is now mega if you know what I mean
Those must be some underpants
@Bensei as long as the games are good they will sell and if one every two years is to much for some gamers, then they are not obligated to buy.
By this time next year most of Nintendo's 'big' games titles will have appeared on the Switch. Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Tennis, Mario Party, Luigi, Smash, Kart and maybe even Metroid.
That doesn't leave much apart from some minor sport title. One Mario Switch a year would be better and forget mobile games.
@zool Well, that's not how it works. Nintendo has the luxury to take as long as they need to make a good game, and a good game takes time. Just look back at the time when Sonic released a new 3D-jump'n'Run EVERY year from 2002 to 2014 until they realized with Sonic Boom that they had to stop.
Also, having reasonable breaks between games creates demand. If you release a new game every year "because you don't have to buy them" then people won't buy them. Even if still enough people buy it, it will result in lower sales, which results in people selling their stocks and bad publicity.
Mobile Games also offer many advantages. I think some are actually good (enjoyed Super Mario Run except for the grind and I think FEH is great), they strengthen the brand recognition and also, investors seem to more likely invest in companies that do mobile stuff, because they see more potential there as in the console market, which is said to be dead with the next generation by analysts (which I personally don't agree with).
Adding to that: We still have Nintendo Franchises left: Star Fox (I'd die for a re-release of Zero with GOOD controls), F-Zero, a real Switch Zelda (BotW was a Wii U port), Dr. Mario, an obligatory third edition for Pokémon 2019, more Pokémon spin-offs, a FE4 remake, Art Academy, WarioWare, more Labo-Stuff, a new Donkey Kong Country, Ports of games like Xenoblade X and Mario Maker, Pikmin 4, a Kid Icarus (either a sequel of the jump'n'runs or the third person shooter), and maybe a new Sin&Punishment, a new Punch-Out and Mario Kart 9 close to the end of the Switch life cycle.
Also, there was no new NSMB title in there as of yet either.
@Bensei people go to Disney World because it's Disney. And they buy Nintendo games because they are Nintendo. Remove the characters from both and all you have is a basic theme park and a basic console.
Apart from Pikmin the other games you listed are not relevant, just basic games. Yes we could have another DK and also we could have Mario.
Nintendo need to make more games. Not cardboard toys or Smartphone games.
@MaxlRoseGNR how is it clickbait? Title says MARIO makes a cameo in commercial, exactly what it was.
@zool
"Apart from Pikmin the other games you listed are not relevant, just basic games."
Pokemon, Mario Maker, and Zelda are just "basic games"?
Yes. We are getting a Pokémon this year, and we have had Zelda, a Mario platformer every two years you said is not a good thing, then that would apply to other franchises. And Mario Maker, how many ports must we have on the Switch?
@shaneoh
HOW DID YOU FIND THE GIF I WAS LOOKING FOR
Apple thinks they're so cool and intellectual. You know, my Samsung has more features than simply a gargantuan camera. Albeit, I wish I could point my phone itself at my wallet.
@zool
You are suggesting that Nintendo should release more Mario games on the Switch, but they shouldn't release more Pokemon and Zelda games on the Switch.
@westman98 No. I would like to see a Mario a year and even a Zelda a year. I don't play Pokémon.
@AlexSora89
I just searched "Luigi's Ballad gif" and there it was
@zool So basically what you're saying is you're only playing Mario and Zelda games, and games like a new Star Fox, F-Zero or Kid Icarus has no value to you? Also, the west never got FE4, so it would count as a new game too. And FE is currently as big of a brand as Mario and Zelda.
Oh, and I forgot a new Paper Mario. Preferably one that returns to the style pf TTYD.
Also, you are trying to say Nintendo should release a Mario and a Zelda annualy because you're impatient and demand it?
Nintendo wants to sell other games too, and Thirds also complain that on Nintendo consoles players only buy Zelda and Mario. So there's enough reasons why Nintendo wants to spread their releases instead of rushing games.
Try the waiting game, man. When you really got "nothing to play" in the meantime, you can try replaying old ones. There's 30 years of Mario and Zelda games out there. If you haven't 100%ed all of them yet, there could be some you wanna play again.
If not, you could try to widen your horizon and play some of the games you deem "irrelevant". There's like a 1000 Switch games out there that released in less than two years. You can't tell me there's nothing that can keep you occupied.
Coincidentally, NintendoLife just made an articel about this: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/09/soapbox_why_do_we_want_more_games_when_weve_already_got_too_many
@shaneoh
You're a lucky one, you.
@AlexSora89
Google images loves me
@Bensei I suggest you go back and re-read the posts and the articals heading.
@Bensei I mostly agree with you, but FE is not even close to being as big as Mario or Zelda. I love it, but all of the mainline games in the series combined have not sold as much as Mario Odyssey or BOTW. That being said, a new FE (along with the other titles you mentioned) obviously still brings a lot of value to the Switch.
@shaneoh
Not enough to give you a "view image" button, though, I guess.
@AlexSora89
No, though "right-click, view image" gets the same result.
@shaneoh
Weird. Did Google backpedal on it?
@zool
Nintendo doesn't have the manpower to annualize the Mario platformers and Zelda (though I suppose if you include the spin-offs/remasters/remakes, then both are already pretty close to being annualized).
@westman98 then farm them out or employ a new team. 😀
@zool
Nintendo isn't the type of company who will hire external developers or build a new team just to rush out more games per year.
The only game franchises that are annualized nowadays are the major sports sims and COD. Even Ubisoft gave up trying to annualizing Assassin's Creed due to development constraints and series fatigue (which Origins bounced back from due to its overhaul of the series' traditional mechanics).
Apple users have so few choices that the very idea of a larger screen is apparently mind-boggling. How people can stick to the iPhone brand even today is strange.
@westman98 look how well Ubisoft did with Mario + Rabbids. Other companies could be given a franchise
@zool
Mario + Rabbids is a spin-off. If you include spin-offs, then Mario is already annualized and has been for decades.
@AlexSora89
Nah the button is still gone, but right clicking an image and selecting view image or open image in new tab will take you to it and the url.
@westman98 so we need more Mario 2.5 Platformers.
@zool Not something Nintendo wants to give to others. They said repeatedly that they want to let Thirds do stuff that they CAN'T do, e.g. Hyrule Warriors. They wouldn't have agreed to Mario + Rabbids if it was a plattformer.
@shaneoh
Weird, never worked for me before.
