@nessisonett A lot of people claim Orphan of Kos to be the most difficult boss, but for me it is either Lawrence (Fire!) or Ludwig because of that move where he jumps on the ceiling and it’s instakill if you miss the timing.
I also noticed how the music for The Key Cavern is very similar to the Father Gascoinge theme from Bloodborne. I’m not charging anyone with anything, but it’s an interesting parallel.
@BarefootBowser Good question. It’s also going to be interesting to see how much of the game will be able to fit on the physical card. It would be nice if they opt for for the 32gig card, since it looks to be a huge game.
I’m fine with 2-3 gb patches and updates, but downloading something like 20 gb out the box would be a bit a bummer.
@rex_rex It might be a longer wait if you wanted to go physical though. Just found out there was a delay and won’t be available until November 8th. Digital will be October 18th though.
I would like to give this one a try, but A Hat in Time is so close. I might save up my change for that one, since I played a lot of 2D platformers lately.
I got Link’s Awakening and Blasphemous this month. Played Bastion, Cuphead, Stardew, Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Ori already.
I don’t remember liking Bastion that much actually. I’d be willing to try Pyre out by that same developer though. I wonder why that one didn’t come to Switch yet.
@Toy_Link You have to wonder why Nintendo hasn’t pursued putting Toad in Smash. I’ll admit that that I wouldn’t want to see him kicking Mario’s a**. He’s much more of a lover than fighter to me.
@bimmy-lee I’m still waiting for Battletoads to come to NES online so I can finally use rewind to pass the turbo tunnel. I still keep passing through the platform. 😾
@Ralek85 Love Hollow Knight and put over 300 hours (Godmaster radiant runs) into it but while it may be more refined, I’d struggle to call it truly innovative. The main journey basically hits all the beats that Super Metroid did, and I didn’t find the storytelling/lore any more interesting than the one presented in Metroid.
So I think the whole “indievania” thing is great comfort food but I still find the older titles to hold up. The only one I’ve played recently that seems to add anything truly new to the formula is Rain World.
Dead Cells is a blast, but the nature of the roguelike design means that exploration is limited. Clever idea though.
@BarefootBowser Yeah that’s true. Saw that a while back. Maybe it will be every other month now? I guess it’s up in the air, but I agree it would be nice if they drop more than a couple if that is the case.
@Hylian-Likely Earthbound will come eventually but not Chrono Trigger and FF 6. The NES Dragon Warriors (Quest) games being separate Eshop purchases proves that Square wants to release their games independently. Looks like Konami and Capcom are going in the same direction, despite some of their smaller releases popping up on the service.
The SNES games are so good that they are even diverting some of my attention from some of the new big releases. Hope they plan to drop some more next month. DKC and the Witcher 3 would make for a good October.
@Ralizah Yeah the “lets play” horror stuff got pretty grating. I like your comparison with the Halloween slasher fad. It’s the same thing with The Blair Witch found footage craze a while back.
It’s really the subtlety of Amnesia and what you don’t see that make it effective.
I’m a well seasoned egg in the horror genre, but playing The Dark Descent is a really terrifying experience. I would double-dip on Switch, though not sure if my nerves could handle it.
I really liked this game when I played it a while back. It is a really beautiful game, but I don’t think the visual style has aged as well due to so many games borrowing from it. Those glowly orbs just look visually uninteresting now.
Hmm. Never heard of Beast Quest. Beastmaster, on the other hand, would be interesting. The window for that one has probably passed. Too bad open world 3d graphics weren’t around 35 years ago.
@BarefootBowser Bosses are pretty easy once you discover the weakness, but I think the game presents a decent challenge when played on “hero” mode. It’s a bit artificial and the penalties for death aren’t that severe, since the dungeons are small, but it definitely requires you to stay on your toes.
It’s a bit of a shame that there are performance issues because I think other than that, it is the most beautiful Switch game I’ve played. I usually don’t 100% games, but it’s just such a pleasure to run around and explore this island.
Hopefully they can address some of the issues with a patch later. It really deserves it.
@Skunkfish It must be a problem. I doubt all those who are having the problem would be lying. What would be in it for them?
I had a slight case of drift, but I must of solved it by recalibrating the joysticks in the menu.
A better question isn’t whether this is happening or not, but rather- how soon is it happening. If you have one person who said it took 2 years and another that said it took 2 days well... something isn’t right here.
@Agramonte Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but I think the design of the SNES perfectly suits Super Mario World. It’s fine with the 360 style Pro Controller but the SNES buttons are perfectly spaced on to execute the game’s essential “hold run and rock thumb to jump” maneuver. The grips would just get in the way.
Other games or neither here nor there with SNES controller though. Functional but maybe not perfectly comfortable.
@JaxonH Yeah there wouldn’t be any reason to create this limited supply for the product. Ultimately this would lead to more losses for the company than gains. I think this myth about Nintendo can be traced back to Christmas of ‘88 when it was near impossible to find the Zelda II and Mario 2 carts for the NES. Some believed it was Nintendo intentionally creating hype around their games, but I think it had to do with shortages of the materials needed to make the circuit boards.
Edit: Changed “artificial demand” to limited supply. Artificial demand in economics means something entirely different.
@Donutsavant Yeah I really like that Tim Rogers video essay as well. I’m not even a fan of the series but I like his account of the games and what they mean to him.
About 50% through Link’s Awakening and really enjoying myself. When I started playing/replaying a lot of the Zelda games this year, I thought there was going to be one that surpassed the others as my clear favorite, but that isn’t the case at all. Every entry offers its own unique take on the formula and feels just as well designed as the last.
Looking forward to stretching the limits of the chamber dungeons as well. It is pretty limited, but I’m pleased with some of the designs I was able to devise so far.
I agree that the game should have never shipped in the state it was in, but at least they are fixing it. I’m not averse to picking it up once they are done.
@Ralek85 Hey thanks for your detailed and thoughtful post. I thought Golf Story was fantastic as well. Just a joy to play and I really liked that guy with the newspaper that gave you those ridiculous course challenges he created. Good stuff.
Also I love From Software’s games and place them next to Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania as my favorite games. Beat all of them multiple times and was driven to practical insanity (in a good way) trying to get all the endings in Sekiro earlier this year. Still need to go back to Bloodborne and get further in those Chalice Dungeons but I don’t have all the materials necessary to do so.
I’ll check out Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I didn’t have a WiiU so that one will be new to me.
My parents have possession of my 360 so I’ll have to dust that one off and see if I can find those games you recommended. 👌
@RadioHedgeFund I agree. GTA V is way too structured and lacks the charm of the PS2 games. I also prefer the more janky controls over the more realistic ones they use in their games now.
Thoughts while reading the article are general apathy about Namco and AtGames fighting over an old video game, and imagining how many cases of Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, and Flintstones Chewable Vitamins you could buy at Walgreens for 1.62 million dollars.
@the8thark Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll definitely check out Xenoblade and Octopath eventually since I’ve heard they are pretty good. I thought Secret of Mana was a pretty fun and unique game when I played it a while back, so I’ll probably like the sequel.
I remember really enjoying Super Mario RPG and Earthbound as a kid. Hope to see them on the SNES online service sooner rather than later. I don’t think I knew when I was younger that those Paper Mario games were actually successors to Mario RPG. I think I have the Paper Mario 64 cart somewhere but I never played it. It would be nice to see Thousand Year Door on the Switch, since I don’t have a GameCube anymore and never played it back when it came out.
I’m not sure what exactly is the “secret” to making an 80 hour game absorbing enough to warrant the investment. It’s easy to say that in order for a game to be that long it has to have a clear motive or objective to keep the player absorbed, but I’ve sunk 100+ hours into Breath of Wild and Stardew Valley effortlessly mainly because of the sheer amount of content and creativity I could have playing around with the systems. I think it also goes back to old game design adage where the very act of doing something simple like jumping or swinging a sword must be compelling enough for the player to get satisfaction out it even the 5000+ time they do it. It’s very hard for a game that consist mostly of menus to pull that off.
@Ralek85 Hey I’m just curious what JRPGs you’d recommend on the Switch. I’m definitely the type of person that looses interest in these games about 30 hours in. I like them and all, but my mind keeps wandering and I start feeling like my time is being wasted since the gameplay isn’t very compelling. I’m going to finish Persona 5 eventually, but I’m about 40 hours in and I feel a very similar apathy.
Which JRPGs have you played that kept your interest? I did find the turn based battles in that Octopath demo sort of compelling. Is that a good one?
If the money is going to fund new games then so be it, but I just don’t see any other justification for this game’s existence. I’ve played and loved almost every entry to this series going back to the SNES, but I’m not going to even try this game out. It would just get me upset.

I bought the physical for Smash, but that has already been updated numerous times, and can you even imagine how much they are going to release for Animal Crossing post-launch. No point going physical for that one.
Even indie games with physical releases do that. Look at Dead Cells. That game plays a lot better than it did at launch, with a ton of extra content.
I’m just debunking the whole argument “if I go physical, I’ll be fine”. No you are just as reliant on digital as everyone else.
As for the other post you were commenting on, I have no idea how they are misinformed. Indie developers I’m sure would really like to have a physical release for all their games, just as a band would love to have all their albums pressed on vinyl. But it’s hard to find a publisher to distribute physical copies of their games. It also probably doesn’t make much profit for them or the publisher since of the high cost of the venture.
Ultimately it benefits the developer and customers more when buying the game digitally. It saves them the cost and effort and I get a game at a good price.
Thank you developer and yes I’m happy to give you Sd card space for your awesome game.
Edit: I’m not excusing publishers like Capcom and Squaresoft for not putting all the games on the card. They are just cutting corners and they have the money and resources to put the entirety of the game/s on card. But indie devs are a different story.
@BenAV Yeah I can see that. Maybe I’m just easily impressed, but for me it has some of the best art direction in a game I’ve seen this year. With a couple of tweaks it would be better, but I think this remaster and Minish Cap are the best looking top-down Zelda games.
@Anti-Matter You mean all those physical games you buy that still require you download new versions and patches digitally? I buy physical games too, but let’s face it- very few are all on the cart.
@impurekind Yeah it’s not going to long before people are going to be selling modded Switch Lites you can connect to a TV. It will be expensive, but it’ll happen.

Astral Chain mostly and dungeon creator in LA. Got some small Eshop games as well, so it looks like too many games again.

It made sense for Animal Villiage to have that sound, but it doesn’t fit to have this chipmunk version of the theme song.
It is a brilliant soundtrack actually and perfectly suits the game. The woodwinds and gameboy-like beep and bloops were a very inspired choice.
