Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Online - Every NES And SNES Game Available

NotTelevision

@Ralek85 Love Hollow Knight and put over 300 hours (Godmaster radiant runs) into it but while it may be more refined, I’d struggle to call it truly innovative. The main journey basically hits all the beats that Super Metroid did, and I didn’t find the storytelling/lore any more interesting than the one presented in Metroid.

So I think the whole “indievania” thing is great comfort food but I still find the older titles to hold up. The only one I’ve played recently that seems to add anything truly new to the formula is Rain World.

Dead Cells is a blast, but the nature of the roguelike design means that exploration is limited. Clever idea though.

@Hylian-Likely Earthbound will come eventually but not Chrono Trigger and FF 6. The NES Dragon Warriors (Quest) games being separate Eshop purchases proves that Square wants to release their games independently. Looks like Konami and Capcom are going in the same direction, despite some of their smaller releases popping up on the service.

Re: Switch Lite Added To Joy-Con Drift Class Action Lawsuit

@Skunkfish It must be a problem. I doubt all those who are having the problem would be lying. What would be in it for them?

I had a slight case of drift, but I must of solved it by recalibrating the joysticks in the menu.

A better question isn’t whether this is happening or not, but rather- how soon is it happening. If you have one person who said it took 2 years and another that said it took 2 days well... something isn’t right here.

Re: The Wireless SNES Controller For Switch Unlocks Super Mario World Sound Effects

NotTelevision

@Agramonte Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but I think the design of the SNES perfectly suits Super Mario World. It’s fine with the 360 style Pro Controller but the SNES buttons are perfectly spaced on to execute the game’s essential “hold run and rock thumb to jump” maneuver. The grips would just get in the way.

Other games or neither here nor there with SNES controller though. Functional but maybe not perfectly comfortable.

Re: The Wireless SNES Controller For Switch Unlocks Super Mario World Sound Effects

@JaxonH Yeah there wouldn’t be any reason to create this limited supply for the product. Ultimately this would lead to more losses for the company than gains. I think this myth about Nintendo can be traced back to Christmas of ‘88 when it was near impossible to find the Zelda II and Mario 2 carts for the NES. Some believed it was Nintendo intentionally creating hype around their games, but I think it had to do with shortages of the materials needed to make the circuit boards.

Edit: Changed “artificial demand” to limited supply. Artificial demand in economics means something entirely different.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 28th)

About 50% through Link’s Awakening and really enjoying myself. When I started playing/replaying a lot of the Zelda games this year, I thought there was going to be one that surpassed the others as my clear favorite, but that isn’t the case at all. Every entry offers its own unique take on the formula and feels just as well designed as the last.

Looking forward to stretching the limits of the chamber dungeons as well. It is pretty limited, but I’m pleased with some of the designs I was able to devise so far.

@Ralek85 Hey thanks for your detailed and thoughtful post. I thought Golf Story was fantastic as well. Just a joy to play and I really liked that guy with the newspaper that gave you those ridiculous course challenges he created. Good stuff.

Also I love From Software’s games and place them next to Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania as my favorite games. Beat all of them multiple times and was driven to practical insanity (in a good way) trying to get all the endings in Sekiro earlier this year. Still need to go back to Bloodborne and get further in those Chalice Dungeons but I don’t have all the materials necessary to do so.

I’ll check out Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I didn’t have a WiiU so that one will be new to me.

My parents have possession of my 360 so I’ll have to dust that one off and see if I can find those games you recommended. 👌

Thoughts while reading the article are general apathy about Namco and AtGames fighting over an old video game, and imagining how many cases of Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, and Flintstones Chewable Vitamins you could buy at Walgreens for 1.62 million dollars.

@the8thark Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll definitely check out Xenoblade and Octopath eventually since I’ve heard they are pretty good. I thought Secret of Mana was a pretty fun and unique game when I played it a while back, so I’ll probably like the sequel.

I remember really enjoying Super Mario RPG and Earthbound as a kid. Hope to see them on the SNES online service sooner rather than later. I don’t think I knew when I was younger that those Paper Mario games were actually successors to Mario RPG. I think I have the Paper Mario 64 cart somewhere but I never played it. It would be nice to see Thousand Year Door on the Switch, since I don’t have a GameCube anymore and never played it back when it came out.

I’m not sure what exactly is the “secret” to making an 80 hour game absorbing enough to warrant the investment. It’s easy to say that in order for a game to be that long it has to have a clear motive or objective to keep the player absorbed, but I’ve sunk 100+ hours into Breath of Wild and Stardew Valley effortlessly mainly because of the sheer amount of content and creativity I could have playing around with the systems. I think it also goes back to old game design adage where the very act of doing something simple like jumping or swinging a sword must be compelling enough for the player to get satisfaction out it even the 5000+ time they do it. It’s very hard for a game that consist mostly of menus to pull that off.

@Ralek85 Hey I’m just curious what JRPGs you’d recommend on the Switch. I’m definitely the type of person that looses interest in these games about 30 hours in. I like them and all, but my mind keeps wandering and I start feeling like my time is being wasted since the gameplay isn’t very compelling. I’m going to finish Persona 5 eventually, but I’m about 40 hours in and I feel a very similar apathy.

Which JRPGs have you played that kept your interest? I did find the turn based battles in that Octopath demo sort of compelling. Is that a good one?

Re: Review: Contra: Rogue Corps - An Ugly And Unfocused Mess That Shames The Contra Name

I think the Anniversary Collection releasing slightly takes the sting out of this release. I didn’t expect it to be as good as the classic games, but it takes a certain level of incompetence to make a twin stick shooter this bad, especially for a developer this big.

Between this and that Castlevania mobile game, Konami really are on a consistently embarrassing streak.

Added: But the bright side is that this will make for a really entertaining Jimpressions 🐸

Re: Ittle Dew 2 Removed From Switch eShop Against Developer's Wishes

@SwitchForce My point is that we all rely on digital downloads, and that doesn’t change when you buy games physically. You can play Version 1.0 if you want, but considering how many improvements/content are being added post launch for these games- who’d want to do that? I bought the physical for Smash, but that has already been updated numerous times, and can you even imagine how much they are going to release for Animal Crossing post-launch. No point going physical for that one.

Even indie games with physical releases do that. Look at Dead Cells. That game plays a lot better than it did at launch, with a ton of extra content.

I’m just debunking the whole argument “if I go physical, I’ll be fine”. No you are just as reliant on digital as everyone else.

As for the other post you were commenting on, I have no idea how they are misinformed. Indie developers I’m sure would really like to have a physical release for all their games, just as a band would love to have all their albums pressed on vinyl. But it’s hard to find a publisher to distribute physical copies of their games. It also probably doesn’t make much profit for them or the publisher since of the high cost of the venture.

Ultimately it benefits the developer and customers more when buying the game digitally. It saves them the cost and effort and I get a game at a good price.

Thank you developer and yes I’m happy to give you Sd card space for your awesome game.

Edit: I’m not excusing publishers like Capcom and Squaresoft for not putting all the games on the card. They are just cutting corners and they have the money and resources to put the entirety of the game/s on card. But indie devs are a different story.
