Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 4th)

@Tyranexx That’s awesome. Those are some real time sinks you have got there. Your year (or 2) looks pretty much covered 😄.

@NintendoByNature I don’t typically like dialogue heavy RPGs, but the Witcher 3 has some really fantastic writing and awesome characters. Like you’re playing through a really good miniseries. That part of the game is so good, you start forgetting about the other shortcomings.

I guess it’s to be expected when you are just compiling user scores and ranking them, but the order is really strange. Really liked Ghost Trick but it’s not quite the number 8 game of the decade. Same with Professor Layton even though I also enjoy those games.

It’s like a group of people were annoyed that the game was underrated and shot up the score too high.

There should be Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Arms, Link’s Awakening, and Skyward Sword on this list.

Re: Former Nintendo Of America President Reggie Says The Future Of Games Is In The Cloud

I don’t think physical media will go anywhere. If anything there might be a silver lining to this. Look at vinyl record shops nowadays full of new and used records going for affordable prices. It’s there because the market still demands it.

I imagine that is the future of physical video games media, because there will always be a market for it. Grandmas and grandpas who grew up with their games will be selling them off, and perhaps even companies like Capcom or Nintendo (whatever they will be in 20-30 years) making new physical copies of older games. You also have to consider the all “clone” consoles like the Analogue Nt and Retron 5 and how well they’ve done. You won’t need the original hardware because there will be new duplicate consoles that can play the games.

This is an optimistic outlook but I think it’s a distinct possibility.

There will always be an aficionado/ collector scene for video games, just as there is one for music and movies.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY Is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The lead up to The Game of the Year with that dumb looking Fast and the Furious game was pretty cringe. The in game models looked pretty bad. If Michelle Rodriguez wasn’t on stage you wouldn’t have guessed that was her character in the trailer. I don’t know why they felt that was the best send off for the show.

@OorWullie Yeah I’m with you. Nintendo will have a tentpole release for winter 2020 and BOTW 2 will likely be next year’s Smash Bros./ Pokémon.

I was just joking about the demo. Nintendo doesn’t need to demo stuff like Mario and Zelda because they know it will sell anyway.

@NEStalgia I’d say the wages and standard of the living has gone up in China across the board. Mainly due to amount of people, as was mentioned before, moving from rural to urban areas and becoming part of the “white collar” work force. The jobs in area/fields like accounting, engineering, and computer programming/ IT have risen astronomically in the last 10-15 years. Students also have a high level of proficiency in the maths and sciences, since they are forced to study it so rigorously in school.

Now if someone were to ask me “Has the CCP engineered an ideal society” I’d certainly say no. I’m just pointing out some of the things people overlook in the discussion of China being “evil”. Capitalism as a mode of economic organization, is inherently destructive and wasteful though. You can’t totally blame a country like China, historically poverty stricken and used by foreign imperialist, in wanting to have their own leverage. You need leverage and capital if you are going to have any sort of autonomy, with the way the international market works. America wouldn’t go to war with China, but they’d definitely put them in a stranglehold extracting resources and corporate dominance. It’s sad to say that certainly because you’d hope we as a collective human population would be over that sort of power hungry interventionism, but as the 20th and now 21st century prove it is just as prevalent as in previous eras of history.

@Friendly That’s certainly an important perspective, and a reality of living in a country that punishes those who speak ill of the government. Ultimately though China is just a capitalist country with strong central government planning. In some ways it pays off because they avoid a lot of the economic up and downs that constantly impact countries with far too powerful and wasteful private industries. Not all economic recessions mind you, but a lot nonetheless. There are both pros and cons in what the CCP has done. China is the fastest growing and upwardly mobile country probably in the history of civilization. While wages have stagnated in many developed countries, China’s are on the rise and the standard of living has improved dramatically. That can’t be ignored, but neither can many of the unnecessary sacrifices made in the process.

So it’s a complex situation.

Re: Nintendo Switch To Officially Launch In China Next Week

@NEStalgia As far as Hollywood being a vehicle for social commentary, I thought that mostly went away in the late 70s with the arrival of Star Wars. Sure there were your outlier films here and there but the 80s and 90s were mostly about escapism. I actually thought the Marvel movies which were partially geared toward a Chinese audience, had more social commentary than the 90s superhero flicks, but that could just be my interpretation. Then of course you have a recent film like Joker, definitely not made for a Chinese audience but everyone has seen it anyway, that is full of commentary but the rather adolescent type in my opinion.

I’m just saying that the more console gamers there are in the world, the better off we all are. If Nintendo wants to put microtransaction riddled nonesense in their games like Tencent, than that’s their choice but I think as long as sales are good than that won’t happen.

I just think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves by indulging in these hyperbolic scenerios that may or may not occur. PlayStation and XBox have been in China a while now, and nothing drastic when it comes to censorship has yet occurred.
