@Tyranexx That’s awesome. Those are some real time sinks you have got there. Your year (or 2) looks pretty much covered 😄.
@NintendoByNature I don’t typically like dialogue heavy RPGs, but the Witcher 3 has some really fantastic writing and awesome characters. Like you’re playing through a really good miniseries. That part of the game is so good, you start forgetting about the other shortcomings.
I saw no reason not to grab the PS4; since it is next to nothing to buy one nowadays. The games are also frequently on sale, so no problem there either.
The biggest disappointment for the Switch is how pricey the big games are on the system. That’s why I’ll choose the PS4/PC version occasionally, but I do like the portability of the Switch.
I guess it’s to be expected when you are just compiling user scores and ranking them, but the order is really strange. Really liked Ghost Trick but it’s not quite the number 8 game of the decade. Same with Professor Layton even though I also enjoy those games.
It’s like a group of people were annoyed that the game was underrated and shot up the score too high.
There should be Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Arms, Link’s Awakening, and Skyward Sword on this list.
It will be interesting when the game is closer to release and we’ll be able to find out more the development. Even the reasons behind the restart are shrouded in secrecy and rumor.
@nessisonett I was a late starter as well, but that game is great. I found out too late that you can actually bookmark the fights. I was marathoning those things, and wish I would found that feature sooner.
I think of the last decade as the one where indie games exploded in popularity. I haven’t played Disco Elysium yet , but I think it is an example of one that points to the potential of of small studios making more ambitious games.
I don’t think physical media will go anywhere. If anything there might be a silver lining to this. Look at vinyl record shops nowadays full of new and used records going for affordable prices. It’s there because the market still demands it.
I imagine that is the future of physical video games media, because there will always be a market for it. Grandmas and grandpas who grew up with their games will be selling them off, and perhaps even companies like Capcom or Nintendo (whatever they will be in 20-30 years) making new physical copies of older games. You also have to consider the all “clone” consoles like the Analogue Nt and Retron 5 and how well they’ve done. You won’t need the original hardware because there will be new duplicate consoles that can play the games.
This is an optimistic outlook but I think it’s a distinct possibility.
There will always be an aficionado/ collector scene for video games, just as there is one for music and movies.
The lead up to The Game of the Year with that dumb looking Fast and the Furious game was pretty cringe. The in game models looked pretty bad. If Michelle Rodriguez wasn’t on stage you wouldn’t have guessed that was her character in the trailer. I don’t know why they felt that was the best send off for the show.
It was a surprise. There wasn’t a game this year I thought stood far above the pack, but Sekiro was the best that I played. Good for the team at From Software.
This is a genuinely fun and unique game that didn’t need the bevy of corporate sponsorships and loot boxes. All the movie tie-ins and sports team skins really tainted the game.
I’m sure it’ll be pretty good. I did like The Escapist. But do we really need another survival sandbox game in 2019? Unless there are some interesting story elements there doesn’t seem to be much separating this one from the countless other indie games in this genre.
@HappyMaskedGuy Yes I do. Your criticism of the review comes off as overly pedantic and was written in so you come across more knowledgeable and able to better identify nuances in judgement than the reviewer. Pretentious fits the bill.
@NEStalgia I’d say the wages and standard of the living has gone up in China across the board. Mainly due to amount of people, as was mentioned before, moving from rural to urban areas and becoming part of the “white collar” work force. The jobs in area/fields like accounting, engineering, and computer programming/ IT have risen astronomically in the last 10-15 years. Students also have a high level of proficiency in the maths and sciences, since they are forced to study it so rigorously in school.
Now if someone were to ask me “Has the CCP engineered an ideal society” I’d certainly say no. I’m just pointing out some of the things people overlook in the discussion of China being “evil”. Capitalism as a mode of economic organization, is inherently destructive and wasteful though. You can’t totally blame a country like China, historically poverty stricken and used by foreign imperialist, in wanting to have their own leverage. You need leverage and capital if you are going to have any sort of autonomy, with the way the international market works. America wouldn’t go to war with China, but they’d definitely put them in a stranglehold extracting resources and corporate dominance. It’s sad to say that certainly because you’d hope we as a collective human population would be over that sort of power hungry interventionism, but as the 20th and now 21st century prove it is just as prevalent as in previous eras of history.
@Friendly That’s certainly an important perspective, and a reality of living in a country that punishes those who speak ill of the government. Ultimately though China is just a capitalist country with strong central government planning. In some ways it pays off because they avoid a lot of the economic up and downs that constantly impact countries with far too powerful and wasteful private industries. Not all economic recessions mind you, but a lot nonetheless. There are both pros and cons in what the CCP has done. China is the fastest growing and upwardly mobile country probably in the history of civilization. While wages have stagnated in many developed countries, China’s are on the rise and the standard of living has improved dramatically. That can’t be ignored, but neither can many of the unnecessary sacrifices made in the process.
This is good news for people who just wanted to play through the new selection of games they are dropping in December. I never used my platinum points for those awesome gulp desktop wallpapers they were offering.
I’m not offended, it’s just stupid to associate someone with Nazi Germany because of their language ability. Maybe it just slipped out, but it’s an incredibly dumb and close-minded association.
Sakurai is right to praise Kojima for this game. I don’t think every choice Kojima made was great, but it’s hard to argue that the overall package didn’t achieve its potential. Games like Death Stranding are pushing the medium forward in new and interesting directions.
@NEStalgia As far as Hollywood being a vehicle for social commentary, I thought that mostly went away in the late 70s with the arrival of Star Wars. Sure there were your outlier films here and there but the 80s and 90s were mostly about escapism. I actually thought the Marvel movies which were partially geared toward a Chinese audience, had more social commentary than the 90s superhero flicks, but that could just be my interpretation. Then of course you have a recent film like Joker, definitely not made for a Chinese audience but everyone has seen it anyway, that is full of commentary but the rather adolescent type in my opinion.
I’m just saying that the more console gamers there are in the world, the better off we all are. If Nintendo wants to put microtransaction riddled nonesense in their games like Tencent, than that’s their choice but I think as long as sales are good than that won’t happen.
I just think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves by indulging in these hyperbolic scenerios that may or may not occur. PlayStation and XBox have been in China a while now, and nothing drastic when it comes to censorship has yet occurred.
This is not a negative thing. If more people in China are buying consoles, that’s a net positive for everyone in the world who wants consoles to succeed. If China doesn’t approve of a game, they just won’t sell it in the mainland.
Fire Emblem Three Houses is really great. It might be my second favorite game on Switch, after Zelda. I already lost 3 members of the Black Eagles in battle, but I don’t intend to lose more.
Also some Death Stranding which is pretty interesting so far.
Sonic himself doesn’t look bad, but I’m thinking this is going to be another bad video game movie. Not an interesting bad one like Super Mario Bros., but a mediocre one like that Assassin’s Creed movie a while back.
Death Stranding is the most original game of the bunch and probably deserves to win. Too bad Fire Emblem didn’t get more nominations. I’ve just started playing it and it’s really one of the better games I played all year.
@impurekind I tried, but playing it on emulator was problematic due to the input lag. Usually it doesn’t matter with JRPGs, but the rhythm oriented combat in M3 requires precision. I just gave up.
Hopefully Nintendo releases it one day in the west.
@DinnerAndWine Well... I’m assuming you are not living in China, so...are you suggesting that agents of the PLA are going to be “knocking on your door”, for things you are saying outside the administrative border of China?

Re: Top Japanese Developers Vote For Their Favourite Games Of 2019
That’s an interesting list. I’m surprised that no western indie developed games got on there. Even Bloodstained is a no show.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 4th)
@NintendoByNature Haha. That’s a dark turn that storyline takes. Kind of feel strangely sympathetic to that pitiful man by the end though.

I don’t see much of a difference between the one on Switch and the PS4. PS4 has more options, but I never use them.

Silly me.
Re: Nintendo Fans In Japan Select Fire Emblem: Three Houses As Their Favourite Switch Title Of 2019
@Krest_arisen What’s wrong? Did Santie Claus give you Jedi Fallen Order instead of the Sword and Shield bundle for Christmas?
I know you asked him for that.
(Rocket deployed)
Re: Nintendo Fans In Japan Select Fire Emblem: Three Houses As Their Favourite Switch Title Of 2019
News Flash!!!!
The Switch can’t play Jedi Fallen Order. Therefore... it sucks and is totally irrelevant.

I can see the reason why it was chosen.
Re: Nintendo Asks Fans To Share Their Favourite Switch Online Memories Of 2019
@nessisonett Absolutely. I was addicted to that one for a while on NSO. The halftime “show” always good for a laugh too.
Tecmo Super Bowl is the better of two, but won’t be released due to licensing issues.

Most of it didn’t look like stained glass to me. It looks like Hollow Knight. That’s not an indictment, I’m just calling it like I see it.
Little Briar Rose is very promising looking game, that actually looks like beautiful stained glass.
Re: Random: Upset By eShop Discoverability Issues? Spare A Thought For Chinese Switch Owners
Just change the region to Hong Kong if you are in the mainland. That will fix that problem.
Re: Random: Is Nintendo UK Getting Cheekily Political With This Animal Crossing Poster?
Perhaps they are, but I’m sure you can apply it to the sentiment of the poster to many citizenry.
If the next election comes down to Joe Biden and Trump, then many in the US would take Nook up on that offer.
Far far gone is the prospect of “moderation” in these times.
Re: Random: Xbox Series X? That's Just A Tall GameCube, The Twitter Masses Say
@EVIL-C Ohhh Yeah.
I didn’t know what planet we were on in that trailer. Might be some alien tech Microsoft got their hands on.
Re: Random: Xbox Series X? That's Just A Tall GameCube, The Twitter Masses Say
I like it. They probably went through many concepts and just decided on the simplest one that could accommodate the hardware.
It’s very un-Nintendo since it’s just a brutalist black box.
I’m calling it the X-Beast.

@OorWullie Yeah I’m with you. Nintendo will have a tentpole release for winter 2020 and BOTW 2 will likely be next year’s Smash Bros./ Pokémon.
I was just joking about the demo. Nintendo doesn’t need to demo stuff like Mario and Zelda because they know it will sell anyway.

Haha. One can dream.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 7th)
Finally made it to the last “palace”, if you want to call it that, in P5. Good times but tough. I’ve had to restart from the beginning a lot.
Also really liking the sprite work and animations in Samurai Shodown 2, so I’ll continue playing around with the various fighters in that one.
Happy Holidays everyone!

299 RMB sounds pretty good for first party games. Usually they run 320-400 currently when coming from Hong Kong, US, or Japan.
