At the end of last month, VGC published a report claiming Nintendo was set to remaster the majority of Super Mario's catalogue to celebrate the series 35th anniversary this year. It was then backed up by Eurogamer, and after this VentureBeat's staff writer Jeff Grubb chimed in with information from his own source.
One of the games said to be making a return was the Wii U outing, Super Mario 3D World. According to Jeff's source (that recently called the Indie World and Nintendo Direct), there's a possibility of 3D World getting its own Deluxe release - a bit like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It sent speculation wild, and since then, fans have been searching for extra clues. Well-known Nintendo fan and Twitter user Wario64 has now turned the attention to a not yet "activated" listing on the Best Buy website:
Retailer listings and leaks are often a good indication if a game or announcement is on the way, and we've seen this in the past with titles like The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt - Complete Edition. Unfortunately, the US-based retailer Best Buy does not have the strongest track record on the Switch front.
It previously listed games like Metroid Prime Trilogy and Persona 5 for the Nintendo Switch, and 12 months later there's still no official word. Former Best Buy employees have even stated in the past that the company adds games all the time based on rumours.
What do you think, though? Given the previous reports, is this perhaps something more? Share your thoughts below.

Yeah I don't buy it. They said the same exact thing about Persona 5 and nothing's come from it. Smoke and mirrors, people. Smoke and mirrors.
I still can't believe Captain Toad Treasure Tracker got ported to Switch before 3D World.
Sorry, been burned already by Persona 5, Star Fox Grand Prix, and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Taking this with all the salt in the seven seas.
@RPGamer Considering tropical freeze just added easy mode and still charged $60 I wouldn't imagine much would be added to this - same for peachette in Mario Bros WiiU port :/
@Decapre I might be in the minority, but I actually enjoyed Captain Toad more than 3D World. Captain Toad was a colorful, fun, and innovative puzzle-platformer. 3D World looked pretty but was a fairly bland Mario offering in my opinion (especially as a single player experience versus the undoubtedly much more enjoyable co-op). I didn't even care enough about it to try to finish it. I liked Super Mario Odyssey a whole lot more.
@InJeffable I can attest to that, I played the entire campaign in single player and then again on co-op with two other people to get the final challenges done (the one where you need to beat every level with every character). The playthrough on co-op was much more enjoyable than the single-player run. There were a lot of ho-hum moments in the single-player run, but the co-op run was a delight in every level (though I suppose that all depends on who you play with).
I'm ducking the rotten vegetables undoubtedly heading at my cranium... but I like 3DW more than Odyssey (tho both are great, obv). I think it's the best multiplayer SMB game of all time and Switch owners unfamiliar with it are in for a treat (if this is real).
Transparent pipes is blasphemy.
@Franklin Now I am reminded that I want more level styles in Mario Maker 2 (like Odyssey’s 2D wrap around & anti-gravity levels).
Trustworthy listing or not, I still think this game will make the Switch at some point. Super Mario 3D World is an amazing game, and anything with a certain plumber on the cover sells like hotcakes.
After this comes out. We need a pikmin 3 deluxe.
Then yoshis wolly world deluxe. Then Metroid Prime Trilogy deluxe.
Who needs new games. Keep the deluxes coming.
Porting Super Mario 3D World to the Switch is, or at least should be, a foregone conclusion given the utter avalanche of first-party Wii U titles that have come across, not the least of which is Captain Toad, which relies on many of the same mechanic and proved that the touch functionality can be translated. Is it assured by the Best Buy listing? Of course not, but it makes far more sense than a listing for a Wii game for a console that has not had a single Wii game, or a listing for a mainline Persona title when there hasn't been one on non-Sony hardware for more than two decades. I do hope it comes over, though. It was a fantastic game, and if TMS deserves a second chance at life then Super Mario 3D World certainly does.
Oddly, I hooked the Wii U back up for the kids to play Mario Kart 8 and Nintendo Land. Found myself getting sucked back into Breath of the Wild and being reminded what I loved about the console.
I could see them porting Super Mario 3D World to the system to fill in a release gap created by the COVID-19. It does make things easier for me since I already own it and doubt they will convince me to spend $60 again for it.
Ah, I haven’t bought any games that were on Wii U ported over to Switch but if 3D World comes I would double dip for this. I really enjoyed this game. Not sure if this is trustworthy though.
all those leaks and this is all that's showing :/
@Muddy_4_Ever
I think you’re right, if couch co-op is your jam, 3D World is one of the best games of all time for that. Odyssey was a better single player experience. Both are great though.
I stand by the listings of MP Trilogy and Pikmin 3 being legit. There was just some delay in their announcements. That’s my theory anyway.
This is pretty much the Switch's worst-kept secret at this point. I was expecting it to be released during the last holiday period (particularly as the 3D World style was incorporated into Super Mario Maker 2).
@Muddy_4_Ever : I enjoyed it more than Odyssey as well, but my enthusiasm for Odyssey soured mainly due to the awful (and very predictable) ending. Considering all of the merchandise and build-up to a wedding and for there to be no wedding is a real kick in the pants. It seemed like they wanted Peach's sudden I-don't-need-no-man dismissal of Mario's efforts to rescue her serve as an amusing twist (while preserving the status quo), but it was just insulting, not only to the audience, but to Mario who risked life and limb to save her (and at her dainty behest).
Making Mario and Peach finally tie the knot could have lead to some interesting new possibilities going forward (I can't even think of any major games featuring a husband and wife duo), and a possible Odyssey sequel could have seen Daisy team up with Mario and Peach to save Luigi from a female villain in a reversal of the damsel-in-distress trope. Happily-ever-afters are so overrated. I want to know what happens after the wedding bells toll, dammit!
@Gumbo1995 : They also removed the ability for a fifth player to join in. This of course was done via the Wii U Gamepad in the original, but I see no reason why they couldn't allow one player to point at the screen to add platforms.
Its the most obvious port still not done.
As I never owned a WiiU, Im surely buying it.
I hate that style in Super Mario Maker 2, maybe if I enjoy this game Ill start appreciating the MM2 style.
That would be grear! (And Metroid Prime Trilogy too). 3D World is such an underrated gem. My favourite WiiU game after BotW, which I consider to be a Switch game.
Don't tease me like that! Missing out on Super Mario 3D World was my one regret for not buying a Wii U. I'd also be interested in Metroid Prime Trilogy if there were control options that allowed me to move and aim simultaneously in Metroid Prime 1 & 2. The lock-on mechanism worked for the most part, but it didn't help me defeat that damn disappearing health-regenerating boss in the first game.
I already have it on Wii U, but i expect it to be ported.
I bought nearly all exclusives on Wii U, and with third parties i have nearly 80 physical retails for Wii U.
@rpggamer
A medal? From you? What for?
You Didn't like the joke but even then care enough to repply... Keep your medal to yourself mate 🤭🤭🤭
I would double dip. I actually hooked up my Wii U just to play 3DW
I'd buy it if we got it. I had a blast with the game back in university playing it with my roommates. If we did get it, I'd hope they'd add a few more courses and/or new playable characters.
@Muddy_4_Ever
I played 3D World almost exclusively in single player and yes, I like it more than Odissey too. Obviously Odissey is awesome, and made me say "wooow" many times, but I found 3DWorld a bit more genuinely funny and with more replaybility.
I’d take this Mario over oddysey any day. It’s really fun with friends.
I did not particularly enjoy this game. I love 2d and 3d Mario, though not really the New series and this Wii U game did not entertain me much at all.
I owned a wii u since the get go so I can live without all these wii u ports. @Nintendo please bring Sunshine to the switch. There are things to improve here to make the game more enjoyable.
@Muddy_4_Ever I don't like 3D World more than Odyssey, but I also don't think Odyssey is any sort of replacement for it. The games are so different. I feel like 3D World and Odyssey will be great compliments to one-another: 3D World for the addictive, obstacle course game design and multiplayer shenanigans, and Odyssey for a big, exploratory, single player-oriented experience.
I still believe Metroid Prime Trilogy is a thing. I also believe that it is complete and ready to go, as previous rumors have suggested. However, it is absolutely not going to be announced until the next time news is given on Metroid Prime 4. They go hand-in-hand and will not be separate announcements.
MP4 is still a long ways off and the trilogy will be meant to tide Metroid fans over and also bring in new fans. I would expect them to release the trilogy 6 months to one year before MP4. And that time has yet to come.
Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy Daisy. sigh I'm sure Mario 3D World will come to the Switch eventually. I can only dream that Daisy will get in like she did in Super Mario Run.
It's a shame she wasn't in Mario Bros. U DX for her 30th Anniversary.
Best Buy sucks. I hope they go out of business.
3D World is definitely getting the DX treatment on Switch, but these Best Buy listings don't really mean anything at all.
Remember when Best Buy listed Prime Trilogy, Persona 5, and Zelda Link to the Past for Switch last year?
If they could add Wario, Waluigi, Daisey, and Toadette as playable characters as well then I would definitely double dip on this one otherwise I'm good with my Wii U copy.
@Silly_G You should be working in dev at Nintendo. That sounds like such a fun game to shake up the formula a bit. I like your creativity. 😎
Eh. I don't really trust listings anymore until further proof from Big N themselves.
Might I add that these listings are ruining surprises? If this game gets announced, there's no surprise there, because it's leaked as coming soon or whenever, you kinda know it's going to happen. So really, what's the point in stores opening their mouths when they try to get away with not being fired? I know I'm just saying some salty things here, but on another note, I actually wouldn't mind every Wii U game being on the Switch, since basically the Wii U was a stick in the mud at this point.
And that goes one of the last reasons to get a Wii U (or at least keep giving it love). I understand the commercial reasons behind this kind of move, but I'm also sad that a heavily underrated console sees its great exclusives ported to its successor.
@Moroboshi876 Why sad? More people get to play great games. Releasing the game on Switch doesn't delete the game from Wii U!
I would personally love to see SM3DW on Switch. It's my absolute favourite Mario game. Odyssey is an amazing playground, but the laser-focused game design in 3D World is something else.
We should have Metroid, Mario Sunshine, Galaxy’s, 3D world by now.
@8itmap_k1d Of course it's good for a game to be available for as many people as possible. That's something I don't argue.
But on the other hand it saddens me (and I know I'm not the only one) that the reasons to buy a Wii U nowadays are diminishing. I'm talking about those who, like me, are interested in systems no matter if they're current or they're from previous generations.
What doesn't sadden me, but angers me, is when they re-release a game for a current system but with added levels or important enhancements, because I won't be double dipping and that's punishing for early adopters as much as when a new and enhanced version of a console gets released and new games are made with that version in mind while run worse on early ones (New 3DS, Xbox One X...).
I bought a WiiU late last year, and got this game for $10. It was ok, but I can hold out a few years for the Switch version to get a steep discount or a Nintendo Selects release.
I hope it does get ported over because I’m yet to play a Mario game on the switch and I enjoyed playing 3D land on 3DS, plus this will allow me to play some of the WiiU games
Not realy intrested in most of these metroid games beside the first one from the wii.
I owned a wii just for 6 months and got rid of it fast
@La-weejee
I agree.
Those titles deserve to get attention, the wii u had some magical games.
The wii-u itself was also a fantastic system, but you had to own one to see it yourself.
I still think the concept would have become popular if it was slimmer and could be taken from home like the nintendo switch, and nintendo had worked on these relationship with 3th party developers.
I'll hope concept will be tought of in the future, i realy liked the usage of a secondary screen in games.
Damn I wish Metroid Prime Trilogy was a thing...
@mesome713 you are so toxic with your salty comments and nonstop trolling. Grow up.
@datamonkey give it time...
I hope this comes to Switch, I never owned a Wiiu so would love more Mario games
I think it’s just a matter of time before this comes to switch I will be patient and if I feel the urge I will fire up my Wii u and play on that x x x x x x
@Decapre
They ported over a charming puzzler from a system that failed makes sense to me.
60$ for a wii u game is to much for my wallet.
@Decapre It was also ported to 3DS as well. The thing is the Wii U version flop so to make money on the game Nintendo had to milk it twice. Would had been nice if they did the same with Metroid: Samus Returns and Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds too, not having those in HD was a miss opportunity.
It's obviously happening. Not sure what it has to do with Metroid Prime Trilogy. Which is obviously also going to happen at some point. Probably pushed back to the summer before Metroid Prime 4 arrives.
I haven't picked up any of the Wii U to Switch ports. Actually I played BotW on Wii U because I hadn't felt the need for a switch yet due to lack of new games that I already owned (yall remember the early port only times). Even after I got a Switch, I got Wii U Tropical Freeze digital via Walmart (was delisted but codes still worked) because it was less than $20 vs Switch version's $60.
That being said, if this game came out with online support and some other features I might pick it up on a sale. I did really enjoy it but the only thing I didn't get is the beat all levels with all characters since I didn't feel like playing through it 5 times.
@Tyranexx Not everything. Remember Mario Maker 2 ?
Where's my METROID PRIME TRILOGY!!!!!?!?!?!?!??!?!
Very cool such an amazing game.
After playing Astrobot on vr i think nintendo needs to make a few mario games like astrobot vr as it was like mario world coming to life before my very eyes and blew my mind.
@Euler I was under the impression that Super Mario Maker 2 has done pretty well? It doesn't chart as often these days, but I do recall seeing quite a lot about the game for awhile.
Granted, I don't have the game, but that's more because I prefer to play Mario levels, not create them.
@Tyranexx It's the second-worst-selling game in the main series, with the exception of Mario Maker 1 on the Wii U.
@Moroboshi876 I see your point, but put yourself in the shoes of the majority of Switch owners, who never had a Wii U and never had a chance to play the game. It's still amazing and if they chuck in some enhancements and extra levels I'd argue it's absolutely worth full price. Let's say the original sold 10 million - they can sell double that just to people who've never played it, let alone double dippers.
Edit: It actually sold less than 6m
@8itmap_k1d Absolutely. But when they add levels, people who already have the game on Wii U and doesn't want to double dip gets a little left out and hesitates wether to stick to the inferior version. It's a dilemma: to stick to the old game or to pay full price for what is essentially the same with a few extras? And it hurts every time, believe me.
@Euler I'm not surprised it beat out the first entry, but I wonder why it wasn't as popular as other Mario games? Maybe more people feel like I do about it. Not that I think it's a bad game - far from it! - but I'm just not into sandbox creativity type games. I would've been all over something like it when I was younger.
@Moroboshi876
Gotta admit, the extras added to Captain Toad stung like wasabi up the ol’ tailpipe! I had just finished it, like, a year prior to the Switch’s announcement (I’m behind playing almost every game..) too; my reaction to the Direct, in hindsight, was probably hilarious! Re-releasing a SUPERIOR Tokyo Mirage Sessions was, however, heartbreaking. It was like a secret joy of mine had been released to the masses. Selfish, but, my feelings nonetheless.
That said, gotta agree with @8itmap_k1d on a couple instances... I am loving: Cuphead, Ori, Final Fantasy X, Dragon Quest 11, Tales of Vesperia, Bastion, Ys-8, Disgaea (1, 4, 5), Metro Redux, No No Kuni, A Hat in Time, New Super Luckys Tale and Digimon Cyber Sleuth (plus dozens I’m forgetting). I have also heard that others immensely enjoy Doom(s), Witcher 3, Fortnite and Skyrim (etc.), so...I guess, ultimately, a Fair Trade.?
@CodyDogg It's not like I don't agree with him, I understand the reasons behind a rerelease and I'm happy more people get to enjoy these games. What I'm saying is I'm also sad all this makes the Wii U more irrelevant. If only more people had supported it and had discovered the games the first time around...
Captain Toad has been the only double dipping I did, but for a good reason: it had Super Mario Odyssey levels, and dropped the Super Mario 3D World ones. That made keeping the Wii U version still worth it, and I chose the 3DS rerelease instead of the Switch one because I was interested in the 3D effect, plus it was on a heavy sale and I could grab it for 9.99.
But in other cases I just stuck to the Wii U disc. I sold Rayman Legends and bought it again on Switch later. Then I decided not doing this again. Maybe the fact that I had several still unplayed games on Wii U made me even sadder when I knew about ports on Switch and that's why I want to give my Wii U some love. Who knows?
Played 3D Land on 3DS. Loved it! Have no Mario game on Switch at all; I have no game featuring Mario except Smash Bros. Best Buy needs to cool tf down with these pre-emotive listings, and we need to hurry up and get this released on Switch.
@Moroboshi876
Completely agreed, it’s tragic that owning a Wii U is increasingly more ‘laughable’ as each day passes. Playing King of Cards on it in December was the first time I booted it up in about a year, admittedly, but a great system with some truly memorable, unique gaming moments. And TMS, to me, epitomized that underrated theme of tye System; love, love LOVE! the Paper Mario series, but would’ve handed that confounding entry over to the Switch a thousand times sooner than (a Superior?!) SMTxFE! Same with 3D World, hell, even NES Remix I & II: let the beefy Switch audience have at both of those, I don’t care! Tokyo was my preciouuusssssss!!
Soapbox, complete.
@Tyranexx I was surprised too. Perhaps the Wii U gamepad being better suited for Mario Maker than the Switch could have something to do with it. The lack of free online couldn't help either. And it's not just sandbox creativity, playing other people's levels is a lot of fun (including the 100 or so Nintendo-made levels).
The only thing that makes this leak seem more credible than others is that this one actually has a SKU attached which - if I'm remembering correctly - I don't think the other leaks had on the Best Buy website.
@Euler Good points; Super Mario Maker 2 seemingly has the lack of free online and different controls working against it. Still, the existence of the game on Switch makes even more sense than the 3DS port of the original. IIRC, that one stripped out a few features.
Playing the levels of others would be the main draw of the game for me. It's not a huge priority for me to pick up right now, particularly when my wishlist is already pretty substantial. XD
@Tyranexx Yeah, the 3DS port was more of a desperate attempt to cash in since the Wii U wasn't selling. Limited online and lack of Mystery Mushroom costumes were a big liability. And I hear you, I have a big backlog and still haven't even bought Odyssey yet. Perhaps it's less of a priority since I have already played Mario Maker 1 to death lol.
@Euler I think the limited online was what really crippled the 3DS version, though that's only based off of info that I've read. I was even less interested in that version vs. the one on Wii U. I never ended up getting either.
Funnily enough, I do have Super Mario Odyssey but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I've considered starting it recently, but I'm not too keen to just yet since I'll be grabbing both The Wonderful 101 Remastered (backed the Kickstarter) and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition next month.
well this is dumb
Omfg another Switch port from the Wii U? Nintendo is becoming lazier
it's true, the port is coming with bowser's fury dlc
