Civ 6 and loving it. So addictive. Although it's a bit frustrating watching the seconds tick by between turns in the later game as the ai figures out a million things. Also playing as my native britain is quite amusing. Bradford is a pretty costal city, liverpool docklands keep getting pillaged by barbarians, big ben is in bristol and the pyramids in london. Also being constantly told that Sheffield needs more housing, when I'm literally stuck in my real house in sheffield seems odd!

Civ 6 for me. My second playthrough and I've gone for standard map size. Wow, that's a whole lot of other countries and city states to deal with!

Might take a look at the eshop sale but trying to resist. In non-nintendo news i picked up Mystic Vale for ios after reading the switch review in this site. Not many games I buy for ipad but this seemed a good fit. Great value if you like deckbuilders and a lot of fun.

About to go out to the supermarket in real life so that should be fun...

Bizarrely seem to have had less time for video games since lockdown. Been building a climbing frame for the kids to give them something to do in the garden.

Still, played a bit of Civ 6. Second proper playthrough, playing as Queen Victoria going for a military victory. Brilliant game, weirdly peaceful.

Also played a bit of mario party with the family but annoyingly my blue joy con that i replaced the sl and sr button strip on has stopped working again so we could only play 3 players.

Oh well. Just glad we have things like video games and the internet in these difficult times!

Finished 1993 doom, might try some of the dlc or have another crack at civ 6.

Also played a bit of snes (switch) - mario world and smash tennis. Will likely rinse Ring Fit these coming weeks too.

Tempted to get some stuff in the sale, especially given how much time we're all likely to be at home now, but still got skyrim, mana collection, octopath and a whole bunch of other stuff to get through.

Hope everyone is safe and doesn't go stir crazy sat indoors!

Working my way through 1993 doom. Just finished episode 3 so onto the last one then will probably give doom a break for a bit before wading into doom 2. Enjoying it and its making me want to play 2016 doom again.

Also started super mario world on switch-snes, reliving my early teens. Both doom and smw hold up really well over 25 years later.

@Damo I guess it's like film-makers (or just about any type of artist) who do the big money-making projects to earn a crust and the smaller riskier ones for personal satisfaction.
Well it's articles like this one (and some reviews) that keep me coming back to this site every day, even if the ad revenue comes more from the other ones. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. Maybe think of it as a loss-leader...

I had no idea this was going on - I live in Sheffield so could have gone to his talk. (Shame on me - I haven't actually been to the video game museum yet other than to drop my son off at a party there - really should fix that).

Interesting article, shame when you see the number of comments on a piece like this versus one of those 'slow news' articles where a hundred people feel the need to comment about it not being news, or argue about politics. Us people, eh?

Almost at the end of Final fantasy adventure on secret of mana collection. I remember being surprised when i heard that in japan this was a prequel of sorts to Secret of Mana, maybe because of the different branding in the west. But replaying it all these years later I can see a lot of similarities, from the monsters and bosses to the charging weapons. Enjoyed playing it.

Then I might start a civ 6 campaign or maybe just some enter the gungeon.

Plus a bit more ring fit.

Me, my bro and a couple of mates waited weeks (maybe months) for Dixons in Solihull to get the multitap in stock so we could play this and Bomberman in 4 player. Totally worth it, absolutely loved this game. And those little touches Mr Scullion describes have really stuck in my head to this day. Looking forward to playing again, albeit only 1 or 2 player.

Re: Talking Point: How Much Is Your Video Game Collection Really Worth To You?

MischiefMaker

I sold a few games a couple of years ago to buy an ipad - n64, gb, gba, gc and wii. Probably got an average of about 20 gbp per game, some more some less. Kind of felt bad but most of them had just been in the loft for years.

Think the most valuable one is my us snes copy of final fantasy 3 (now ff6) - even with the box and manual being quite tatty its a reasonable amount. But not enough to make me part with it, even though that is also just sitting in the loft! Guess the nostalgia is just too strong with that one...

Just Civ 6 for me. My second campaign (first was on the tutorial a few months back) and it's thoroughly addictive. Close to a science victory then I'm ready to move on to something else, but I'm sure I'll be abck again soon to try another campaign. Looks like there is quite a lot of varoety by tweaking which leader, map size, difficulty etc.

Re: Talking Point: How Often Do You Make The 'Switch Sacrifice'?

MischiefMaker

Switch is my main console and the only one I buy games for. My son has an xbox 1 and sometimes I'm tempted to buy games on that, either because they aren't available for switch or are cheaper/better graphics.
But I don't have time to play all the switch games I want, and as others have said I've got much more chance of completing a game on switch. Some games i play almost exclusively handheld and some i prefer on the big tv, but the majority of games get played on both so hybrid is perfect.

Will finish off zelda link to the past - just got the final boss now - and a bit of enter the gungeon. Might start a new smallish game if i get chance, maybe Hard West or something like that. Desperately trying to not buy any more games until I clear the backlog a bit, and my time for gaming is limited with kids, job etc. Also trying to spend less time playing games as my other hobbies and stuff have suffered a bit the last few months (especially when i was playing xc2!). It's hard with so many great games!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Christmas? (Special Edition 2019)

MischiefMaker

I started on Castle of Heart and while it seems a pretty decent game I'm not sure it's for me. Also started SNES zelda on switch online. Been a while and I'm enjoying it. Probably play a bit of civ 6, enter the gungeon and maybe some splatoon 2 over xmas. Might start on collection of mana too, which was almost free on cart via an amazon app offer, although my son is getting pokemon sword for xmas so i suspect my time on the switch will be limited for a few weeks soon!

Have a good xmas everyone!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 14th)

MischiefMaker

Getting back into Enter the Gungeon, hitting the internet for tips to get better as I'm not very good! Brilliant game though. Also a bit of tetris 99 which I haven't played in an age, tiny bit of splatoon 2, and maybe some snes mario kart.

Bought collection of mana but might hold off for a while, don't really want to start any longish story type games since xenoblade chronicles 2 juat dominated so much of my time the last 2 or 3 months

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 7th)

MischiefMaker

Finally finished xenoblade chronicles 2 this week. Really enjoyed it but glad it's done now as it did go on a bit at times. Going to have a bit of time off from big epic games so ive played a little bit of enter the gungeon and splatoon 2 this morning and yesterday - pleased to see that there are still plenty of people online in splatoon 2.

Would like to have a play of civ 6 too as I've only played through the tutorial so far (as a mid xc2 break), but the game breaking bugs have put me off. Unless i just don't update the game i suppose.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 23rd)

MischiefMaker

Still xenoblade chronicles 2 for me, although limited time this weekend. Much as I've enjoyed this game, I'm ready to get it done now so going to try and ignore most if the sidequests etc. If i do that i hope to finish in about 20 hours or less so should be finished b4 xmas at least!

Also trying to avoid the temptation of black friday sales. Backlog is big enough as it is.

Re: Review: BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre - Hellishly Good Fun That Needs More Polish

MischiefMaker

Surely people can see that there are a hell of a lot more games releasing than there ever used to be? I'm not a games reviewer, but it's clear that it takes a lot of time to play a game with a critical eye, draft and probably rewrite a review and publish it. If the site was going to give a full review to every game they'd need about 4 times as many writers and we'd all be paying a subscription, as i bet loads of those smaller game reviews wouldn't get enough traffic to pay for themselves via ads.

Re: Talking Point: Could Nintendo's Game Design Prowess Solve Discoverability Problems On Switch eShop?

MischiefMaker

My method is to add games to my wishlist, mainly based on nlife reviews and comments, then occasionally I'll scroll through my wishlist to see what's on sale. Having said that, my backlog is big enough that I should just ignore the sales for a while...

As the library grows I am trying to be more picky - I might like the sound of a game, but I try and ask myself 'are there already similar games on my wishlist that I would rather play than this one'. I could probably do with cleaning it up a bit, there will be games that I put on there 2 years ago which I wouldn't get now simply because there are other games that i would now rather play.

I agree though, if you buy more games than me, or you don't base decisions on reviews etc, then discoverability is an issue.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 12th)

MischiefMaker

Well last weekend I said I was trying out civ 6 but it hadn't got its hooks into me. Now it has! 'Finished' the tutorial (although it seems buggy as it didn't actually end) and really enjoyed it.

Playing a bit of Into The Breach as a pallette cleanser then I think I will pick up where I left off in Xenoblade 2 for another few weeks. Will definitely be coming back to Civ 6, looking forward to see how it plays outside of the tutorial.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 6th)

Steamworld Heist which I'm enjoying now I've gotten past a bit I was stuck on for a while (occurred to me it might be worth replaying some levels to power up my team and learn to use some of their abilities more effectively).

Probably a bit of mario tennis if I get chance.

Also playing the niantic harry potter game but starting to tire already of its mobile mechanics, grinding away for incremental little rewards with little actual gameplay.

Re: Aonuma Discusses Zelda: Link's Awakening's Dungeon-Making Feature

MischiefMaker

Not sure a zelda dungeon maker would work as a full game. The quick challenge nature of a mario level works well, but I'm not sure that many user-designed zelda dungeons would be worth playing. To make a unique and interesting full zelda dungeon would require more time and design skill than a playable mario level i would think.

Still, nice bonus feature for a proper zelda game.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 22nd)

Finished off Goetia with the judicious use of online guides. Kind of enjoyed it but the puzzles were just too obtuse. Started on steam world heist which i wasn't sure about initially but really enjoying.

Some mario tennis and tetris 99 - got me a golden ticket so fingers crossed!

Finally, been playing Harry Potter Wizards Unite on mobile. Not much on mobile games and the mechanics seem very mobiley, but in the mood for some potter after rewatching the films with the kids
