First played my friends gameboy in the playground, loads of us huddled round, marvelling at the tiny screen showing mario land. Then we moved to the states with my dad's job and i bought a second hand gb off a friend with tetris, dr mario, castlevania and fist of the north star. Absolutely loved it, even though it had his name on the back of it in permanent marker!
Loved it even more over the following years as i got and played the final fantasy games, zelda, mario 2, wario land, metroid 2, kirby, kirby pinball and many more borrowed and bought games.
I did upgrade to a gb colour a few years later, and although it was much improved in terms of size, screen etc i was older then and had an n64 so it just wasn't as exciting.
Of course the switch is my favourite console and offers so many different experiences, but nothing quite matches the thrill of slotting in one of those small-but-satisfyingly-chunky grey carts, watching the Nintendo logo sink down the screen and hearing that 'ba-bing'!
Picking up splatoon 2 after a while off for the splatfest, wow am i rusty! Sorry to anyone who gets stuck on a team with me...
Some enter the gungeon (made it to floor 3 for maybe the 3rd or 4th time ever last night) and tetris 99. If i get chance, might do a bit more of the botw dlc or start a new little game from my backlog, maybe goetia or enter the breach.
Then again, weather is great so maybe just sunshine, bbq and beer!
I was already hooked on gaming, having a nes between me and my brother, but the gameboy meant i could play games anywhere and was truly 'mine'. I remember being amazed that they could fit a whole game like zelda on such a little cartridge!
I'm another one who played this for a few hours and enjoyed it, but stopped as i just don't get enough gaming time to really be able to play such a big, grindy game. My backlog is just too big, and with a few hours a week I'd rather get a wider variety of experiences.
Totally get those who love it though. If i had more time i would deffo play it more.
@EvilRegal I voted for Raging Fighter. Whether it would hold up now, I dont know. But 13 year old me was blown away that i could play something that was like sf2 on the gameboy!
Hmm, appreciate that people seem to love this, but i don't really have enough play time for 2 games like this, and i still enjoy gungeon (and barely ever get past level 2 still). The graphical style of this one doesn't appeal eithet, so i think I'll pass.
I'm on holiday, and for some reason that makes me want to play lots of enter the gungeon and crypt of the necrodancer. I'm still rubbish at both of them but really enjoy them.
I also picked up castle of the heart for a ridiculously low price, but not got wifi here so will wait until i get home to download it.
Had some unexpected Labo as well this weekend, building the motorbike with the boy. Only got a few minutes to play it once it was done but will no doubt get chance to have another go on it soon.
Sat down with a cup of coffee and tetris 99 this morning only for the power to go off just as i booted it up. No wifi = no tetris! Oh well, maybe I'll get chance later at some point.
Might try and fit in some more botw too. Gone back to it to do the dlc, but enjoying just exploring the areas i didn't bother with when i first played the game. Think i got a bit fatigued first time round (after almost 150 hours so hardly a problem!) and wantex to move on to something else, but revisiting hyrule after a few months away reminds me just how great it is exploring in this game.
My other game this weekend is 'avoid reading the comments' after disappearing down a rabbit hole of despair last night in that nlife 'story' about minecraft and its creator. Yikes, don't know why i punish myself sometimes. I could have been playing video games rather than watching people argue!
Don't really get people gloating about this. The ones that suffer are the people who are doing their jobs. The ones who are responsible for the things that many don't like - repetitive franchises, microtransactions, lootboxes - they don't get hurt by this. Arguably those most responsible - execs and majority shareholders who push for higher returns - benefit from job cuts, at least in the short term (which, let's face it, is all anyone is really thinking about when they make such decisions).
I'm no expert on the gaming industry, but that's how it seems to go for all big corporations.
Just picked this up again to do some of the dlc and loving it. One day I'd like to play through the whole game again but will probably not be for a few years.
Finished Yoku's Island Express yesterday so decided to do some of the botw dlc before i start a new game. Nice visiting hyrule after a few months away.
Also played a bit of mario 3d world on wii u with the kids this morning, and may well sneak a bit of tetris99 or enter the gungeon if i get chance.
Been away with the family to York for the weekend so only got a couple of hours in on the switch. Yoku's Island Express and a couple of rounds on Tetris 99.
I've never had the drift issue, but 2 of my 4 joycons have recently developed issues with the tiny shoulder buttons. Means i cant use them in sideways mode as i can't even sync them to the switch like that.
Some Tetris I suppose, see if i can improve on my current best of 8th. Also started Yoku's island express which i picked up after xmas in the sale, and really loving that. Charming little pinball platformer metroidvania type (yes i said the 'm' word).
Well my best is 8th so far, but this gives me an incentiveto try and bust that this weekend. Especially with the lottery type rules. I probably have a tiny chance of getting 1st place once and then winning a prize. In the US rules i'd have to get 1st multiple times and that aint ever happening!
Played some Mario Odyssey, getting some post-bowser moons. I've come to terms with the fact that some of them are just too tough for me though!
Little bit of Tetris 99 and Enter the Gungeon too.
Was going to play some overcooked with the family but it seems that 2 of my joycon are having problems with the sl and sr buttons so can't connect in sideways mode. Looks like a common issue - might have to order a joycon screwdriver and have a go at sorting myself rather than pay the cost to have nintendo fix them, which is apparently not much less than buying new ones. Gah!
I know, I know, opinions and all that. But a lot of people seem to think this guy shouldn't have done his take on the characters, because it doesn't fit what they think suits the characters. Isn't that kind of the point though? Here's an imagining of what a cute nintendo character might look like in the style of another type of game?
Anyway, if you scroll on the yoshi pic there is a time lapse video showing how it was done. Knowing nothing about this sort of art, i found it really interesting.
Minimal gaming time for me this weekend (although bit of board gaming with Mad City and Sushi Go Party was fun). Finally finished super mario bros 3 on the online nes thingy... can't believe I ever beat that game without save states as a littlun!... and also a tiny bit of rogue aces. That latter one i picked up in a sale and kinda enjoying but its not really grabbing me. I also played and finished count lucanor last weekend which i really enjoyed, although it gave me some wierd dreams!
The kids also got in a bit of jackbox party 3 which is always good for a laugh
The whimsical style contrasted really nicely against a couple of quite poignant moments and fitted the overall theme.
I think the style really suited the gameboy too. Kind of like mario land 2 compared to super mario world. Will be interesting to see how that translates to the 'big' screen with this remake.
Well Tetris 99. Having to stop myself playing before bed because then i can't get to sleep for all the blocks falling behind my eyes. Not managed higher than 15th yet, obviously need more practice!
Also started Count Lucanor, which has been in my backlog for about a year. The slow walking pace in it is a bit frustrating but its genuinely creepy and weird in places.
Maybe everyone can share their levels and play user generated ones, and then nso subscribers additionally get weekly or monthly level packs by nintendo designers. I can see something like that working.
I loved rune factory 1, then came back to the series for 4. Really enjoyed it for a while but started to get bored of the routine (which is what has stopped me getting stardew valley), so i nnever completed the story. I think if I had more gaming time I would be all over this, but games with lots of routine or grind tend to make me feel like I'm missing out on other gaming experiences nowadays.
@ryobi85 It's well worth it at that price. Very addictive 'just one more go' type of game. Strange blend of rhythm game and dungeon crawler where you figure out enemy patterns and try and sort of dance around them in time to the tracks.
Played a little bit of splatfest but only a handful of matches. Got Rogue Aces for cheap - not sure I'll sink hours in but good for a quick pick up and play. Some mario bros 3 and Enter the Gungeon to round the weekend off
Well the weekend is a distant memory, but it was a mario themed one for me, gaming wise. Defeated bowser in odysee and collected a few extra moons. Think ill probably carry on on that one until i get bored before moving onto xc2 or skyrim. Also played a bit more of mario bros 3. Plus a bit of enter the gungeon
A bit of mario oddessey (a word I think I spell differently every time). Probably a couple of runs on Enter the Gungeon too. And I've been playing a horribly addictive puzzler on ipad called Kamiko as well so a little bit of that
Playing Mario Oddyssey, probably about two thirds through the main story and really enjoying it. Also played a bit of Jackbox party 2 last night with family friends. Descended into silliness when most of the kids' answers for whiplash and fibbage involved willies and bums, but there was much laughter and fun.
Not sure if I'm getting any games for xmas, but I'll probably find myself unabke to resist the sales. I've only just started Odyssey and mario bros 3, and still playing warframe, pinball fx3, enter the gungeon so should have plenty to do! I think santa may be delivering Lets Go Pikachu to my son, so may not get that much Switch time by myself!
Im definitely in the camp of appreciating the history but not finding many of these games fun. Even as a kid, playing on my cousin's 2600 felt like a step back after the nes. I can see how others may disagree with the reviewers opinion though. But not really sure how you can argue it's a bad review. It's an opinion! Which is all it can be!
@KingdomHeartsFan Awesome, good to know there are other nlifers and nintendo fans locally (even if the switch isn't for you). Has felt like I'm the only one at times Of course, my lad (11 now) is flying the flag amongst a sea of fortnite and fifa followers at his school. Not that I have anything against those, but nice to have a bit more variety!
@KingdomHeartsFan Are you in Sheffield then, if you went to the promo thing in Meadowhall (or as my son used to think it was called when he was about 5, 'Mega-hole')?
@sketchturner Totally. Love playing overcooked with the family but man, it really tests our relationships! Hilarity ensues, but it has ended in tears at least once...
Oh damn, forgot about the splatfest! Shouldn't there be a reminder in the news bit of the switch? Unless its not on in Europe? Will check in a minute.
Otherwise, played a 2nd runthrough of Oxenfree (love it - 2 plays of it is enough but very atmospheric and i think I'll get the soundtrack on bandcamp. Also mario bros 3 on nso - even after all this time its still great. Played some warframe too although im starting to find it a little repetitive. I do like it, but with big games like Odessey, Skyrim and XC2 on the backlog, I feel I should move on.
Oh, also played a bit of SSB and mario kart 8 on wii u yesterday as my son was hogging the switch. Really tempted by SSBU but never seem to play SSB games enough to warrant the purchase, going back to the n64 one, so trying to resist.
Sorry for the essay, enjoy the rest of the weekend all!
@SenseiDje I don't think it's that black and white. Of course you can make decisions and I think most of us have the choice to do 'the right thing' and live at least a reasonable life. But I'm sure there are also people in some situations where doing the absolute right thing is a dangerous option for them or their family. For the millions that live or have lived under totalitarian regimes, I'm sure this is reality.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't played this game so I'm just going off the review, but it sounds like they are going for this whole grey area. I can totally see why that might not be something that sounds like a barrel of laughs to play, although it does sound intriguing.
@SenseiDje It sounds like its a game that is all about the decisions between doing what's right and what is necessary, so giving an option to take the morally best route but still come out on top would perhaps defeat the purpose or the message.
I think it is meant to be a bittersweet experience that makes you think.
@Pandaman I've no interest in e-sports but it's good to get glimpses into this whole other side of video games. So yeah, keep well-written features like this coming please!
Not loads lof gaming time for me this weekend but will probably get in a bit of warframe. I want to play through oxenfree and then finally start mario odysee, but i can't seem to stop with warframe. Its wierd, i don't get many 'amazing' type of monents playing it, but yet i seem to be hopelessly addicted.
Might also get a few games of pinball in - picked up a few zen tables in the sale. I'm not very good at it but it's a nice little time filler.
@OorWullie And a handful is all you'll get! Those LOL dolls are so overpriced its untrue (except... its true). Most of it is packaging, seriously the amount of disposable plastic in these things is just horrible. Still, I'm a man of questionable principles, and my daughter absolutely loves them, so....
Wow, what a divisive game! I'm in the 'loved it' camp. The music and painterly style really gave this game a certain feel for me. That, combined with the focus on characters and storytelling, just really made it memorable. All the stuff with impa, groose, demise, ghiraghim (whatever his name was) and of course zelda was great.
I also really liked the way that the areas in the game were used, like the forest flooding to make a familiar area into something completely different. Maybe it was a product of limited budget or something but i found it a nice alternative to games with lots of locations that you visit for a while and then forget.
I'm not saying i would want every zelda game to be like this - there were certainly things that irritated, but as a one-off it tried to do something different and really succeeded in my view.
This and xenoblade chronicles made my last year of playing in the wii really memorable.
Bit of splatfest - loving splatoon 2 again after a few months off. Just so slick and fun.
Also getting to grips with Warframe. Had no intention of playing a game that like but quite enjoying it. That sort of grind and character tweaking type of game is well suited to being able to play handheld, but also finally got a pro controller so appreciate when i get to play it on the big screen.
Diving back into splatoon 2. Whenever i get bored of this game, i know that if i put it down for a few weeks or months and come back to it, I'll love it all over again. Such a well made and cool game! Trying to get a bit better with some other weapons (normally just play with dualies) so giving a slosher a go.
Tackling the labo fishing rod with my son while the wife and daughter are out shopping. Plus a bit of enter the gungeon and crypt of the necrodancer. Also played a bit of Fast RMX yesterday for the first time in forever.
Basically trying to get some yse out of some of my played games before i start on mario odessy (yes i know I'm a year late)

Pretty good list, although as a few others have said, kirby's pinball got a lot of play time from me. Definitely in my top 10.

Don't get me wrong, I haven't played this game so I'm just going off the review, but it sounds like they are going for this whole grey area. I can totally see why that might not be something that sounds like a barrel of laughs to play, although it does sound intriguing.
Re: Review: Beholder: Complete Edition - A Grim, Dystopian Adventure That Will Test Your Morals
@SenseiDje It sounds like its a game that is all about the decisions between doing what's right and what is necessary, so giving an option to take the morally best route but still come out on top would perhaps defeat the purpose or the message.
I think it is meant to be a bittersweet experience that makes you think.
Re: Feature: What The Smash Pros Have Done To Prepare For Smash Bros. Ultimate
@Pandaman I've no interest in e-sports but it's good to get glimpses into this whole other side of video games. So yeah, keep well-written features like this coming please!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 1st)
Re: Nintendo Switch Was The Best-Selling Console On Cyber Monday
@OorWullie And a handful is all you'll get! Those LOL dolls are so overpriced its untrue (except... its true). Most of it is packaging, seriously the amount of disposable plastic in these things is just horrible. Still, I'm a man of questionable principles, and my daughter absolutely loves them, so....
Re: Rumour: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Is Taking To The Skies On Switch

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 24th)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 17th)
