@johnvboy just imagine if mario kart 9 ends up a switch 2 launch title (considering how much of a sales juggernaut the series is)
Mario kart 8 is amazing and all but i am curious to see where they go from here with it and what gimmicks stay or are introduced. (for me i enjoyed what anti-gravity brought to the table and wouldnt mind seeing it join the glider and whatnot in terms of reoccurring elements)
@BLD super-guarding is one of the things im curious about since wasn't it a big part of the skill ceiling?
wonder if it will still be 3 frames making the time window somewhat wider, just hope its not rounded down to 1 frame.
other than that the remaster is looking super great though i wouldn't have minded a visual/performance mode option (for those who wouldn't mind the option of the visuals taking a hit)
at the very least its not a deal breaker, also hopefully if it does well then it could hopefully have an influence on the series future.
@Not_Soos "dissapointed but not a deal breaker" feels like the most common take among those who are unhappy with the lower framerate at least going by this articles comments and is in the camp which i am in.
@JohnnyMind
Yeah the game looks amazing, while i am somewhat disappointed by it being 30 (would have been cool with a graphics/performance toggle) it is still nice to hear its super stable.
Maybe on the switch successor we will see a patch allowing for it to run 60 on it (kind of how games like sonic unleashed got patched on xbox when using backwards compatibility)
@Arkay
The main reason people are critical of the 30fps is due to the original back on gamecube running at 60, its only natural people would compare a remaster/remake to the original and this includes various aspects of the game, the same way you see those who are fine with the lower framerate if it means they can enjoy the stunning new visuals, as long as people arent dismissing how others feel its fine.
@batmanbud2
to be fair there was criticism towards star allies due to the 3ds and wii games running at 60fps, where's it felt there was a lot less criticism towards forgotten land due to it being an all new style of game, with framerate its more about how smooth the game plays/how responsive it is why is why i enjoy it when a game gives the choice.
Again while 30fps for the remake/remaster is disappointing its nice to hear its stable and hopefully the timing aspects may have been adjusted to accommodate it. plus its TTYD!!!
@GrailUK
Definitely much preferred how virtual console handled it since you could both keep the games but also if a game came out which you weren't interested in (since naturally not ever game will appeal to everyone) you could just not buy it and could still play all the games you purchased.
Virtual console did have its flaws such as not having an account system back then so purchases were locked to your system (though to be fair even when there was an account system purchases weren't shared between 3ds and wiiu)
I do like that NSO is getting some of the more semi-obscure or niche games but just wish that it wasn't the only way to play the games and that they could be purchased separately so they dont require a subscription/online check to play (similar to how PS+ and gamepass handle subscriptions, or how the DLC is handled on the expansion pass)
apologies for mentioning this subject again its just i do very much love retro gaming which is why i enjoy some of those amazing retro collections and whatnot that we have been getting or even cases when we got some obscure games remastered (doubly so if they get physical versions)
@johnedwin Yeah its unfortunate that the performance issues and whatnot are so bad because all the other stuff sounds appealing but technical issues sound like they run deep throughout the game which makes me curious if its the kind of thing which could even be fixed with a patch.
while more powerful hardware isnt a magic-bullet, to be fair the same could be said about optimisation it feels like there is often some meeting halfway to be done and while there are apparently some issues on other platforms theres a difference between stutters and a game rarely even hitting 30fps like the review mentions.
as mentioned before this game is considered one of the holy grails of unlocalized games in the west and if the only official western release required an online service to play it would feel like a massive monkeys paw moment.
would be kind of like how the english version of the original fire emblem was pulled from the eshop a few months after release only with that people who bought it still got to keep it.
for me a dream situation would be something like @Snatcher mentioned and have a collection released (even better if its physical) or even something like a high quality remake/remaster as detailed in the previous post
@johnedwin Thats one of my hopes for switch 2, there was a decent amount of games which missed out on the original switch over the past couple of years especially which are hopefully viable to port to a theoretical "switch 2", even some of the ones i played i would be okay with double dipping since i generally prefer playing handheld.
again this is under the assumption the next system will be another switch, while i wouldnt be surprised if it was im still waiting for official confirmation before getting hopes up.
if it is another switch im hoping its backwards compatible.
At this point im more curious to find out how the game plays on switch, since from what i gather even the nintendolife preview wasn't based on that version.
the game itself has already sold me on it from what ive seen but am concerned how the switch version will play.
Really i would be more than happy if it kept a stable 30fps throughout since when it gets below that it can make exploration feel worse.
@PikminMarioKirby For me my main curiosity is how the game runs since the reveal trailer was apparently running at half the framerate of the gamecube game which if it does im curious how it would affect things like perfect guards and other timing elements.
@MSaturn really im hoping they lean even more into the idea of "choice" when it comes to how you play the games, the switch felt like a big improvement over previous systems in that regard in that you can play most games with a controller of your choosing but i still feel like there are certain aspects which could be improved such as having game-by-game button remapping as a standard and more viable "accessibility" options (there was that article a while back about the person who had to make a custom controller to play mario galaxy)
@MontyCircus Yeah physical and digital backwards compatibility is also something im really hoping happens with the next system.
@Yosti while im not too up on what constitues a "hybrid" I feel like the switch is similar in a way to the psp-go which was a handheld you could "dock" and play on the TV (iirc the "dock" was called a "cradle") though the switch definitely went more in on the idea by having the dock come with the system (again iirc the psp-go "cradle" was sold as its own thing) and having the idea at the forefront of its marketing alongside the detachable controllers.
really however its labled im hoping the ability to "switch" between handheld and TV is retained in the next system.
@GrailUK to be fair giving people the technical data and letting them come to a conclusion is what technical reviews generally do, like the ones digital foundry do, and those reviews in general tend to account for the hardware too
also they give additional looks into just how these kinds of things affect how a game plays , an example i remember going back to NSMBU after playing wonder and it felt somewhat "off" by comparison but couldn't put my finger on it considering both games ran at a stable 60 with similar physics, watching the video mentioned things like how key frames in animations can affect how a game "feels" to play.
While i dont watch their videos that much i have looked into some of the ones for games i enjoy and they have been an interesting look into how games manage to achieve their distinct "feel" when it comes to gameplay.
As others have mentioned considering this is a UK poll Lara being number one doesn't seem too surprising given just how MASSIVE the series was back in its heyday over here.
some of the other choices do seem confusing since there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern.
@Pak-Man would be also interesting to have those different ports playable, since i love it when collections offer different versions of a game especially back in the day when a "port" could be a very different game altogether (i remember initially playing it through the acorn computer version but also played the mega-drive one a bunch at my aunts)
also would be interesting to have the different expansions, sequels and spinoffs available since while i played the sequel and was aware of the existence of "oh no more lemmings" but never new there was a third lemmings game by DMA design (thought that the third game was lemmings 3d) and certainly didn't know about lemmings revolution, though was aware of the 2006 game on playstation systems (apparently it was a remake of the original with aditional levels and a level editor)
@JohnnyMind
The modding thing is why i do prefer it to something like most games-as-service or something like those cloud releases (though it does feel odd that the cloud games are available for purchase when they would make more sense to be tied to a service given the very nature of cloud gaming requires online)
for me its just more of an ideal/dream situation where the games were also purchasable (for me my favorite retro gaming service was the "psone classics" on ps3/vita/psp since games purchased could be used across all 3 systems and saves could be transferred too, and while the new PS+ service is nice, letting you play the games via subscription and/or purchase along with offering some games for free if you already bought the "psone classics" version it is a wiiu VC situation when it comes to library)
I do like the amount of retro compilations we have been getting though naturally they can vary in value and quality, its also been nice that we have been getting some games localized for the first time via some of these compilations, and it does make me wish nintendo also offered collections like those (though hopefully without the "limited digital" nonsense that 3d all-stars had)
@Zeebor15 Its similar to when something is announced and you get people asking the question "who asked for this?".....
chances are not only are there those who "asked for it" but are also very passionate about said thing, its why im happy to see things like retro releases, localizations etc even when they have a very niche audience.
@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot Its why i still really wish that NSO at least had the OPTION of letting people buy the games (kind of like gamepass on xbox and the legacy content on PS+), since while i can see how a service is fine for those who want to be one-and-done with the games for others there are plenty of games which they would gladly replay,
For me i would be more than happy to buy the likes of banjo-kazooie, Golden sun 1-2, Mario world, earthbound, alongside many other classics since i always enjoy returning to games i love and a good game is a good game no matter the age.
Even with games like this there's bound to be some people with which it is one of their all time favourite games and would be happy to replay them often so I'm happy that its available for those people.
@Yosher yeah I think for me its mainly that i have a strong affinity for those pre-rendered backdrops of that era (and also likely because im on the spectrum) so i usually tend do dig out the PSP/vita when playing it but for many the newer version is more than fine, and is nice to have available on newer systems (would love to see the psone games get their own "remaster" series with updated backdrops and whatnot but thats just a pipe dream thing)
on the subject of playing it on psp i think it was mainly when replaying it when it hit psn a good few years ago that i started to really enjoy it more since as a kid i was too new to rpgs to understand some of the stuff regarding materia (mainly played platform games until then) and also i found the game oddly scary back then.
i did miss out on a lot of the earlier ones when younger due to a mixture of not having a snes (had a mega drive) and them not making it to europe back then but did enjoy them when replaying them with FFV ending up my fave of the 2d games (also got to play chrono trigger when it hit the wii Virtual console and loved the hell out of it)
....i guess this ended up a bit of a ramble from me.
out of the modern ones i enjoyed Rebirth and FFXIV the most.
I do have a special place for crystal chronicles though its really unfortunate how the remaster took away a big part of what made it special (the ability to team up with friends and go on an adventure together, instead the remaster is just online match ups for dungeons)
@Yosher I just find it unfortunate that the modern versions of FFVII are based on the PC release rather than the original psone version, they have these high-res character models walking around the psone resolution backdrops causing a major clash in visual style which was MUCH less noticable on the psone version (there were also a bunch of other minor differences, iirc in some places the wrong music would play, including during a major scene on disc 2, also some other minor visual quirks)
The same thing applies to VIII and IX on switch etc when it comes to backgrounds but VII i felt got it the worst.
in terms of being on nintendo systems the last release time we saw Chrono trigger was technically on the wii through the virtual console back in 2011 though naturally you cant buy it anymore, does make me wish they had an account system back then though at the very least you can still play it if you have the system you bought it on.
does make me wish we got another compilation like the Mana one from m2 only covering other games from square enix (like a soul blazer/illusion of gaia/terranigma one)
in regards to mother 3 if it ever did make its way west im hoping it wont have some caveat such as being exclusive to NSO or that limited-digital nonsense that 3d all stars and fire emblem had.
@GrailUK I'm happy to see FFVII rebirth at least up there since the game itself has been incredibly fun (probably one of my fave rpgs of the past decade or so)
does make me curious if the console exclusivity thing is temporary since i would certainly double dip on those games if they made their way to "switch 2" since i always love RPGs on a handheld and would be nice to see if they could pull of some DQXI level porting magic.
Really im happy just to have older games available to purchase but i do feel like things such as button remapping and screen options should be at least standard (and letting players disable features such as fast forward/rewind and other such things)
Remasters and remakes which go above and beyond are always welcome though (such as those nightdive remasters, the quake 2 one was especially amazing)
am mixed so far on what ive seen of ttyd, the game looks absolutely stunning but im curious to see if it really does run worse than the GC original as the trailer suggested since i feel things like performance and responsiveness are priority (its why its nice when you see remasters of psone and n64 games which improve the framerate)
as mentioned in other comments sections i felt the virtual console was a great idea that could have used some improvements going forward though hate that it was replaced with a service that doesn't allow players to buy/keep the games.
really i appreciate any attempt to preserve the games such as making them available to purchase on modern systems and also things like backwards compatibility (both physical and digital) allowing players libraries to still work on newer systems.
As someone who was a "sega kid" growing up and didnt have a snes growing up i played a bunch of them via the virtual console on wii and wiiu would say my fave of the classics is Super Mario world though mario 3 was also good, i guess those games are the sonic 2 and sonic 3k of the Mario series.
also loved mario 64 and while it was one of the games i did get to play as a kid its a game i appreciated far more when returning to it as an adult (kind of like FFVII)
i would love to have seen a Mario collection on switch with the old school Mario games (plus all stars) though it seems almost 100% likely to not happen (tbh as mentioned before i would have been happy just to be able to actually buy the retro games on switch)
am definitely curious to see what the future holds for both 2d and 3d mario, since odyssey and wonder were some of the most refreshing ones in ages though it wouldnt be opposed to those games getting sequels which refine aspects.
i am happy seeing the ds/3ds get some more love when it comes to potential ports since theres quite a few games on those systems i would love to have the option to play on TV with (i play the vast majority handheld but love having the option to)
I remember playing this a while back on 3ds but am curious to give it another go after more experience with the SaGa games (the ones on switch are in my top games according to play time)
also on the subject of ds/3ds rpgs i would love to see Radiant historia make its way to switch
@Dm9982 y im kind of in the middle when it comes to the experience with gaming when younger, on one hand going through the early 3d era meant i experienced a lot of really low framerates but also going through the pre-3d and dreamcast/gamecube era of gaming did mean i also got to experience a lot of 60fps games before the early HD era happened and 60fps on consoles became a lot less common again (though it does seem to be making a comeback)
@Arkay the general consensus tends to be that it depends on the game, in this games case people are happy that it was aiming for 30 but unhappy that it drops to the low 20s (though there was apparently a patch) wheres games like thousand year door and the metal gear collection a lot of the criticism of them being 30fps (at least it seems to be the case in the former) is because older versions of the games ran at 60 (the gamecube version of TTYD was 60fps, the ps3/360 metal gear solid collections had MGS 2 and 3 running at 60 also iirc) though in ttyd's case its also that the game has a lot of timing elements and things like perfect guard have a very narrow frame window.
though again, 60 will naturally have the game play smoother and be more responsive but in a lot of cases a switch port of a more ambitious game that can hold 30fps is generally considered a good port.
@-wc- The hi-res characters on low res backgrounds is one of my main issues with the modern FFVII ports (iirc they are based on the 1998 PC version which also had a similar issue along with some of the more subtle visual effects looking off)
I played the original psone FFVII via the vita (since its part of the psone classics series) recently and feel like it holds up a lot better than the modern ports for me.
the other aspect i wasnt really a fan of is that also iirc you cannot outright disable those "booster" features (they are a nightmare for those with obsessive compulsive issues, as in the medical definition)
As for remake/rebirth, i usually see them as their own thing and taken that way have been the most fun ive had with an FF in ages, i felt like they clicked with me a lot more than the likes of XIII, XV and XVI, i would have probably double dipped on them on a theoretical "switch 2" but not sure if that console exclusivity rules that out (though would be open to a new handheld from sony)
@Sonicka Yeah i feel like the fact that the original was 60fps makes it a lot more noticeable alongside the timing stuff.
It can feel like a lot of the time in comments sections that 60fps is treated like some big new thing (its why you see people lump it with 4k saying things like "i dont care about 4k60fps" despite people not even mentioning 4k) when its been around for decades its just that it took a while for it to become more common in 3d (and later HD) games.
@Perpetual_Change This is another thing im curious about, while i imagine games with framerate issues may be hitting their target by virtue of increased power, games which are locked at 30 would need an update or something to hit 60 (kind of like how some 360 games got patched to run better on newer Xbox systems when played via backwards compatibility)
The game looks absolutely stunning though it is disappointing that the framerate takes a hit, as mentioned before i would have been cool with having an option of a "performance" mode option. (though not expecting it since first party games can be hit or miss when it comes to options, pretty sure mario vs DK remake didnt even have an options screen at all)
Am curious though if with the lower framerate with how it will effect things like the timing elements. some of those had a pretty small window iirc so the more responsive controls were really helpful.
@LadyCharlie Yeah this is similar to how i feel, while i felt there were some great additions which would be great to see in future games (as you mentioned badges were neat. also loved having peach and daisy playable) but then with direct sequels to nintendo games things can go multiple ways, theres things like the NSMB series which re used the same 8 world themes for all 4 of the games wheres then theres something like majoras mask which was built off of Ocarina of time but was extremely unique with both its new ideas and a new setting that the game has a strong identity of its own.
@sketchturner For me i would have loved to have the stages be a bit longer to give each one a bit more breathing room before you hit the wonder effect, some stages it felt like they took up much of the stage such as the special world and while in some cases i enjoyed that such as the musical jumping one which still heavily focused on platforming, others not so much like the slow moving goomba one. (in the case of those airship stages though as someone who hates auto scrolling stages anything which gave you something to do while waiting for the screen to catch up)
also yeah would love to see mainline mario get its "rayman origins" moment, those rayman games were fantastic.
Disclaimer: while the above comment may sound overly critical in places i did still love my time with Mario wonder, it felt like the most refreshing and fun that 2d Mario has been in over a decade and i enjoyed how it introduced a bunch of new power ups and enemies.
@DarkScythe13
Yeah the loss of the virtual console was really disappointing/frustrating for me as mentioned in another comments section i loved the idea of being able to still purchase classic games on modern consoles and the reason why im not a fan of NSO as a replacement (to put things lightly) is because there is not the option to purchase/keep the games (while digital is flawed it has a lot more "safety nets" than service based gameplay, for example people can still play their purchased wii VC games long after the service ends which the same cant be said about an online service)
Really when nintendo mentioned about not wanting to keep reselling the same games via VC and the introduction of the account system i thought (hoped) it would mean that the next iteration of the virtual console would carry over purchases, instead the games literally weren't sold again.
sorry just a bit of a ramble since im a fan of retro gaming and on the plus side it has meant that we have gotten some nice collections recently including some containing previously unlocalized games such as Trials of mana and even some localizations of super niche games like the Marl kingdom ones.
@johnedwin Thats frustrating if thats the case since i would have gladly double dipped if they came to switch successor since i love playing on handheld and it feels unlikely that we will see sony rejoin the dedicated handheld market (as in a handheld console rather than something like the steam deck which is more a portable PC) would be cool if i had had much luck with remote play at all (since it goes through wi-fi and can be very temperamental)
just curious to see how it will end up on switch since the series hasnt had the best track record for ports iirc.
i remember Zero running really well on system (though azure had some performance issues near the end which i dont think ever got patched) and Nayuta ran pretty much perfectly but cold steel 3 had a crash bug in certain areas alongside some noticeable issues especially in handheld mode, Cold steel 4 was similar and Reverie too (the review even mentioning in places that it would get so bad that button inputs would feel delayed)
I would be fine if there was an option to tone down some of the more fancy visual effects added if it meant it could run at the original GameCube versions 60fps.
@EvenStephen7 its one of the reasons why im all for any attempts the gaming industry does to help with preservation, whether it be backwards compatibility (both physical and digital) or making retro games available to buy on modern systems either by remasters/re-releases/ports of retro collections.
Its also why i find the way NSO handles the games frustrating (not being able to buy the games and only offering them via a subscription service where you need a periodic online check in order for them to function) alongside other things like delisting Mario 3d all stars and the original fire emblem from the eshop after only a few months.
I was a big fan of things like the virtual console, as flawed as it was it felt like it had room to improve and i was happy with the ability to play older games on a newer system without needing to mod it/use CFW. The late 2000s-early 2010s was the heyday for that kind of thing with the virtual console and sonys psone classics line were in full swing.
@the_beaver yeah one of the things im exited about for the successor is that it opens the door to a bunch of games which missed the switch towards the later stages of its life.
@Axecon To me that is why i will welcome things like remasters, ports and retro collections because i am heavily in favour of making games more widely available, making it easier for people to officially play these games.
while its something which can often get dismissed as "there will always be people who pirate or emulate it anyway" or other things to that effect i still feel like there is a lot of merit of having these games easily available to purchase officially (its why im not a fan of the subscription method since the games are dependant on a service and an online check in order to function)
Its also why im hoping that physical and digital backwards compatibility becomes a heavy focus so peoples libraries will still be viable for as long as possible.
@ChromaticDracula
again its one of the reasons why im really not a fan of how NSO only lets you play the games via a subscription with no option to buy the games.
while i do hope that gaming does manage to become more "future proof" due to things like backwards compatibility and account systems to make games easier to access officially in the future so people wont need to do the same thing with switch games in the future as it is i feel like once subscriptions and online checks are required for games then there are very few "safety nets" for when the service eventually goes down.
That said when it comes to people emulating games for consoles which are still being sold (and the whole situation with tears of the kingdom) it only serves to muddy the whole situation.
would have said "rare replay" but i guess part of that was just me wanting retro rare games on switch in a form i could keep (though having the N64 games with improved framerate would have been cool, especially something like tooie and JFG)
though that at this point is pretty much not happening so i would probably go with something like Blue dragon or lost odyssey or maybe even blinx 1 and 2.
@Reprise sadly it can feel like a lot of critical discussions can get lumped together as "crying" or "whining" or other similar aspects.
as you mentioned someone being disappointed about an aspect of something doesn't mean that they are going to twitter to throw a tantrum and it does feel unfortunate that some of the more extreme reactions were the ones showcased and discussed (though i still think the tweet from that "bring back banjo" guy makes a good point about subscription-only content)
@Johnny44 There was definitely some rough performance in parts of the direct trailer which did make it seem like it was running on switch hardware though there was also some footage of what looked like FMVs.
though the game is multiplatform so i imagine trailers outside of the direct will be based on other versions.
@heisnbrg
Yeah i feel while there are some legit talking points to be had about things like that tweet from the "bring back banjo" guy about the idea of games being locked to a service (especially after the whole ubisoft "gamers should feel comfortable with not owning their games" thing) a lot of the time these kinds of discussions just end up as generalisations rather than points which have been made
as @Alpha008 mentioned literally any announcement with pretty much any fanbase will have some fans unhappy. after all a fanbase is made up of many individuals and not some collective entity like it feels as if they are treated at times.
am curious to see how it performs on switch, the reveal trailer looked like it was running at 60 which is ideal for an action platformer but the video of the direct it looked lower.
could have been the video but im hoping that whether its 30 or 60 its stable since the core game looks amazing.
@JohnnyMind
im hoping that down the line this version does make it to the switch successor (along with an option for people who bought it on og switch to "upgrade" for free like with some cross-gen games on ps5/xboxone)
though as it is its nice that its going multiplatform since im unsure whether this version on OG switch would get much in the way of improvements when it comes to performance, it may be like with pokemon S/V where the issues are likely too ingrained in the game to where a meaningful "fix" would be possible without completely redoing it.
@Henmii its one of the reasons why i wish that NSO at least had an option to buy/keep the games. im not against the idea of the service existing i just hate that its the only way to play many of these games on switch despite them running natively on the system.
From what i gather the DLC that is offered with NSO can be bought independent of the service but the games sadly cant.

other than that the remaster is looking super great though i wouldn't have minded a visual/performance mode option (for those who wouldn't mind the option of the visuals taking a hit)
at the very least its not a deal breaker, also hopefully if it does well then it could hopefully have an influence on the series future.
Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch
@Not_Soos
"dissapointed but not a deal breaker" feels like the most common take among those who are unhappy with the lower framerate at least going by this articles comments and is in the camp which i am in.
Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch
@JohnnyMind
@Arkay
@batmanbud2
to be fair there was criticism towards star allies due to the 3ds and wii games running at 60fps, where's it felt there was a lot less criticism towards forgotten land due to it being an all new style of game, with framerate its more about how smooth the game plays/how responsive it is why is why i enjoy it when a game gives the choice.

Thats one of my hopes for switch 2, there was a decent amount of games which missed out on the original switch over the past couple of years especially which are hopefully viable to port to a theoretical "switch 2", even some of the ones i played i would be okay with double dipping since i generally prefer playing handheld.
again this is under the assumption the next system will be another switch, while i wouldnt be surprised if it was im still waiting for official confirmation before getting hopes up.
if it is another switch im hoping its backwards compatible.
Re: The First Review For Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Is In
At this point im more curious to find out how the game plays on switch, since from what i gather even the nintendolife preview wasn't based on that version.
the game itself has already sold me on it from what ive seen but am concerned how the switch version will play.
Really i would be more than happy if it kept a stable 30fps throughout since when it gets below that it can make exploration feel worse.
Re: Gallery: Nintendo Introduces The Cast Of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
@PikminMarioKirby
For me my main curiosity is how the game runs since the reveal trailer was apparently running at half the framerate of the gamecube game which if it does im curious how it would affect things like perfect guards and other timing elements.
Re: Mailbox: A More Powerful, Digital-Only 'Switch 2' And "Obscurer" Treasures - Nintendo Life Letters
@MSaturn
really im hoping they lean even more into the idea of "choice" when it comes to how you play the games, the switch felt like a big improvement over previous systems in that regard in that you can play most games with a controller of your choosing but i still feel like there are certain aspects which could be improved such as having game-by-game button remapping as a standard and more viable "accessibility" options (there was that article a while back about the person who had to make a custom controller to play mario galaxy)
@MontyCircus
Yeah physical and digital backwards compatibility is also something im really hoping happens with the next system.
@Yosti
while im not too up on what constitues a "hybrid" I feel like the switch is similar in a way to the psp-go which was a handheld you could "dock" and play on the TV (iirc the "dock" was called a "cradle") though the switch definitely went more in on the idea by having the dock come with the system (again iirc the psp-go "cradle" was sold as its own thing) and having the idea at the forefront of its marketing alongside the detachable controllers.
really however its labled im hoping the ability to "switch" between handheld and TV is retained in the next system.
Re: Review: Penny's Big Breakaway (Switch) - A Furiously Fast & Fun Platformer With Sega Spirit
@GrailUK
to be fair giving people the technical data and letting them come to a conclusion is what technical reviews generally do, like the ones digital foundry do, and those reviews in general tend to account for the hardware too
also they give additional looks into just how these kinds of things affect how a game plays , an example i remember going back to NSMBU after playing wonder and it felt somewhat "off" by comparison but couldn't put my finger on it considering both games ran at a stable 60 with similar physics, watching the video mentioned things like how key frames in animations can affect how a game "feels" to play.
While i dont watch their videos that much i have looked into some of the ones for games i enjoy and they have been an interesting look into how games manage to achieve their distinct "feel" when it comes to gameplay.
Re: Random: BAFTA's 'Iconic Game Characters' Poll Has Us Scratching Our Heads
As others have mentioned considering this is a UK poll Lara being number one doesn't seem too surprising given just how MASSIVE the series was back in its heyday over here.
some of the other choices do seem confusing since there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern.
Re: Review: Felix The Cat (Switch) - A Cute But Costly Clowder
@JohnnyMind
yeah I'm glad that limited digital was only those games since i was concerned at the time it would be a trend.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Would You Like To See Given The 'Gold Master Series' Treatment?
@Pak-Man
would be also interesting to have those different ports playable, since i love it when collections offer different versions of a game especially back in the day when a "port" could be a very different game altogether (i remember initially playing it through the acorn computer version but also played the mega-drive one a bunch at my aunts)
also would be interesting to have the different expansions, sequels and spinoffs available since while i played the sequel and was aware of the existence of "oh no more lemmings" but never new there was a third lemmings game by DMA design (thought that the third game was lemmings 3d) and certainly didn't know about lemmings revolution, though was aware of the 2006 game on playstation systems (apparently it was a remake of the original with aditional levels and a level editor)
Re: Review: Felix The Cat (Switch) - A Cute But Costly Clowder
@JohnnyMind
Re: Talking Point: What Games Would You Like To See Given The 'Gold Master Series' Treatment?
@Zeebor15
Its similar to when something is announced and you get people asking the question "who asked for this?".....
chances are not only are there those who "asked for it" but are also very passionate about said thing, its why im happy to see things like retro releases, localizations etc even when they have a very niche audience.
Re: Best Nintendo Switch 2D Platformers
@Classic603
Would have bought the ever loving heck out of a donkey kong collection on switch.
Re: Review: Felix The Cat (Switch) - A Cute But Costly Clowder
@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot
Its why i still really wish that NSO at least had the OPTION of letting people buy the games (kind of like gamepass on xbox and the legacy content on PS+), since while i can see how a service is fine for those who want to be one-and-done with the games for others there are plenty of games which they would gladly replay,
For me i would be more than happy to buy the likes of banjo-kazooie, Golden sun 1-2, Mario world, earthbound, alongside many other classics since i always enjoy returning to games i love and a good game is a good game no matter the age.
Even with games like this there's bound to be some people with which it is one of their all time favourite games and would be happy to replay them often so I'm happy that its available for those people.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game? Rate Your Favourite Mainline & Spin-Offs
@Yosher
yeah I think for me its mainly that i have a strong affinity for those pre-rendered backdrops of that era (and also likely because im on the spectrum) so i usually tend do dig out the PSP/vita when playing it but for many the newer version is more than fine, and is nice to have available on newer systems (would love to see the psone games get their own "remaster" series with updated backdrops and whatnot but thats just a pipe dream thing)
on the subject of playing it on psp i think it was mainly when replaying it when it hit psn a good few years ago that i started to really enjoy it more since as a kid i was too new to rpgs to understand some of the stuff regarding materia (mainly played platform games until then) and also i found the game oddly scary back then.
i did miss out on a lot of the earlier ones when younger due to a mixture of not having a snes (had a mega drive) and them not making it to europe back then but did enjoy them when replaying them with FFV ending up my fave of the 2d games (also got to play chrono trigger when it hit the wii Virtual console and loved the hell out of it)
....i guess this ended up a bit of a ramble from me.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game? Rate Your Favourite Mainline & Spin-Offs
out of the classics its FFV, FFVII and FFIX.
out of the modern ones i enjoyed Rebirth and FFXIV the most.
I do have a special place for crystal chronicles though its really unfortunate how the remaster took away a big part of what made it special (the ability to team up with friends and go on an adventure together, instead the remaster is just online match ups for dungeons)
@Yosher
I just find it unfortunate that the modern versions of FFVII are based on the PC release rather than the original psone version, they have these high-res character models walking around the psone resolution backdrops causing a major clash in visual style which was MUCH less noticable on the psone version (there were also a bunch of other minor differences, iirc in some places the wrong music would play, including during a major scene on disc 2, also some other minor visual quirks)
The same thing applies to VIII and IX on switch etc when it comes to backgrounds but VII i felt got it the worst.
Re: Feature: 33 Games We're Surprised Still Aren't On Switch
in terms of being on nintendo systems the last release time we saw Chrono trigger was technically on the wii through the virtual console back in 2011 though naturally you cant buy it anymore, does make me wish they had an account system back then though at the very least you can still play it if you have the system you bought it on.
does make me wish we got another compilation like the Mana one from m2 only covering other games from square enix (like a soul blazer/illusion of gaia/terranigma one)
in regards to mother 3 if it ever did make its way west im hoping it wont have some caveat such as being exclusive to NSO or that limited-digital nonsense that 3d all stars and fire emblem had.
Re: UK Charts: Unicorn Overlord Plummets As Familiar Faces Return To The Top
@Sakaixx
hoping those rumours of a new sony handheld end up happening since it would be nice to have the games on a dedicated handheld.
the market definitely has changed since the vitas failure so hopefully something like that would be viable
Re: UK Charts: Unicorn Overlord Plummets As Familiar Faces Return To The Top
@GrailUK
I'm happy to see FFVII rebirth at least up there since the game itself has been incredibly fun (probably one of my fave rpgs of the past decade or so)
does make me curious if the console exclusivity thing is temporary since i would certainly double dip on those games if they made their way to "switch 2" since i always love RPGs on a handheld and would be nice to see if they could pull of some DQXI level porting magic.
Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Expecting More From Remakes And Remasters?
Re: Talking Point: What's Your Personal Favourite Super Mario Game?
Re: Review: The Legend Of Legacy HD Remastered (Switch) - A Decent Return For The 3DS Dungeon-Crawler
i am happy seeing the ds/3ds get some more love when it comes to potential ports since theres quite a few games on those systems i would love to have the option to play on TV with (i play the vast majority handheld but love having the option to)
I remember playing this a while back on 3ds but am curious to give it another go after more experience with the SaGa games (the ones on switch are in my top games according to play time)
also on the subject of ds/3ds rpgs i would love to see Radiant historia make its way to switch
Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Kingdom Come Deliverance On Switch
@Dm9982
y im kind of in the middle when it comes to the experience with gaming when younger, on one hand going through the early 3d era meant i experienced a lot of really low framerates but also going through the pre-3d and dreamcast/gamecube era of gaming did mean i also got to experience a lot of 60fps games before the early HD era happened and 60fps on consoles became a lot less common again (though it does seem to be making a comeback)
@Arkay
the general consensus tends to be that it depends on the game, in this games case people are happy that it was aiming for 30 but unhappy that it drops to the low 20s (though there was apparently a patch) wheres games like thousand year door and the metal gear collection a lot of the criticism of them being 30fps (at least it seems to be the case in the former) is because older versions of the games ran at 60 (the gamecube version of TTYD was 60fps, the ps3/360 metal gear solid collections had MGS 2 and 3 running at 60 also iirc) though in ttyd's case its also that the game has a lot of timing elements and things like perfect guard have a very narrow frame window.
though again, 60 will naturally have the game play smoother and be more responsive but in a lot of cases a switch port of a more ambitious game that can hold 30fps is generally considered a good port.
Re: Save Up To 70% On Square Enix Titles In The Publisher's Latest Switch eShop Sale
@-wc-
The hi-res characters on low res backgrounds is one of my main issues with the modern FFVII ports (iirc they are based on the 1998 PC version which also had a similar issue along with some of the more subtle visual effects looking off)
I played the original psone FFVII via the vita (since its part of the psone classics series) recently and feel like it holds up a lot better than the modern ports for me.
the other aspect i wasnt really a fan of is that also iirc you cannot outright disable those "booster" features (they are a nightmare for those with obsessive compulsive issues, as in the medical definition)
Re: Hands On: 'Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes' Is 'Suikoden' In All But Name
really my only concern for this is how well it will play on switch other than that im sold on it.
Re: Nintendo Reveals Box Art And New Screens For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door On Switch
@Sonicka
Yeah i feel like the fact that the original was 60fps makes it a lot more noticeable alongside the timing stuff.
@Perpetual_Change
This is another thing im curious about, while i imagine games with framerate issues may be hitting their target by virtue of increased power, games which are locked at 30 would need an update or something to hit 60 (kind of like how some 360 games got patched to run better on newer Xbox systems when played via backwards compatibility)
Re: Nintendo Reveals Box Art And New Screens For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door On Switch
Re: Poll: Do You Want To See 'Super Mario Bros. Wonder 2'?
@LadyCharlie
Yeah this is similar to how i feel, while i felt there were some great additions which would be great to see in future games (as you mentioned badges were neat. also loved having peach and daisy playable) but then with direct sequels to nintendo games things can go multiple ways, theres things like the NSMB series which re used the same 8 world themes for all 4 of the games wheres then theres something like majoras mask which was built off of Ocarina of time but was extremely unique with both its new ideas and a new setting that the game has a strong identity of its own.
@sketchturner
For me i would have loved to have the stages be a bit longer to give each one a bit more breathing room before you hit the wonder effect, some stages it felt like they took up much of the stage such as the special world and while in some cases i enjoyed that such as the musical jumping one which still heavily focused on platforming, others not so much like the slow moving goomba one.
Re: Game Boy Emulator Developer Permanently Removes App From Google Play Store
@DarkScythe13
Re: Japanese Charts: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Drops To Second As Final Fantasy Makes A Splash
@johnedwin
Thats frustrating if thats the case since i would have gladly double dipped if they came to switch successor since i love playing on handheld and it feels unlikely that we will see sony rejoin the dedicated handheld market (as in a handheld console rather than something like the steam deck which is more a portable PC) would be cool if i had had much luck with remote play at all (since it goes through wi-fi and can be very temperamental)
Re: Trails Through Daybreak Storms Onto Switch This July
just curious to see how it will end up on switch since the series hasnt had the best track record for ports iirc.
i remember Zero running really well on system (though azure had some performance issues near the end which i dont think ever got patched) and Nayuta ran pretty much perfectly but cold steel 3 had a crash bug in certain areas alongside some noticeable issues especially in handheld mode, Cold steel 4 was similar and Reverie too (the review even mentioning in places that it would get so bad that button inputs would feel delayed)
Re: Rumour: Paper Mario & Luigi's Mansion 2 News Potentially Coming On MAR10
@Serpenterror
This was my concern.
I would be fine if there was an option to tone down some of the more fancy visual effects added if it meant it could run at the original GameCube versions 60fps.
Re: Reaction: Nintendo's Switch Emulator Fallout Is Shocking Only Because It Took This Long
@EvenStephen7
its one of the reasons why im all for any attempts the gaming industry does to help with preservation, whether it be backwards compatibility (both physical and digital) or making retro games available to buy on modern systems either by remasters/re-releases/ports of retro collections.
Re: Random: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Producer Had To Put His Playthrough Of Zelda "On Hold"
@the_beaver
yeah one of the things im exited about for the successor is that it opens the door to a bunch of games which missed the switch towards the later stages of its life.
Re: Random: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Producer Had To Put His Playthrough Of Zelda "On Hold"
@Aneira
i know for sure i would double dip, really enjoyed remake and am about 12 or so hours into rebirth and loving it even more.
Re: Nintendo Sets Its Sights On Switch Emulator Yuzu In New Lawsuit
@Axecon
To me that is why i will welcome things like remasters, ports and retro collections because i am heavily in favour of making games more widely available, making it easier for people to officially play these games.
while its something which can often get dismissed as "there will always be people who pirate or emulate it anyway" or other things to that effect i still feel like there is a lot of merit of having these games easily available to purchase officially (its why im not a fan of the subscription method since the games are dependant on a service and an online check in order to function)
Its also why im hoping that physical and digital backwards compatibility becomes a heavy focus so peoples libraries will still be viable for as long as possible.
Re: Nintendo Sets Its Sights On Switch Emulator Yuzu In New Lawsuit
@ChromaticDracula
again its one of the reasons why im really not a fan of how NSO only lets you play the games via a subscription with no option to buy the games.
while i do hope that gaming does manage to become more "future proof" due to things like backwards compatibility and account systems to make games easier to access officially in the future so people wont need to do the same thing with switch games in the future as it is i feel like once subscriptions and online checks are required for games then there are very few "safety nets" for when the service eventually goes down.
That said when it comes to people emulating games for consoles which are still being sold (and the whole situation with tears of the kingdom) it only serves to muddy the whole situation.
Re: Talking Point: Which Xbox Games Would You Like To See Come To Switch?
would have said "rare replay" but i guess part of that was just me wanting retro rare games on switch in a form i could keep (though having the N64 games with improved framerate would have been cool, especially something like tooie and JFG)
though that at this point is pretty much not happening so i would probably go with something like Blue dragon or lost odyssey or maybe even blinx 1 and 2.
Re: Random: Some Rare Fans Are Upset About The Latest Switch Online Announcement
@Reprise
sadly it can feel like a lot of critical discussions can get lumped together as "crying" or "whining" or other similar aspects.
as you mentioned someone being disappointed about an aspect of something doesn't mean that they are going to twitter to throw a tantrum and it does feel unfortunate that some of the more extreme reactions were the ones showcased and discussed (though i still think the tweet from that "bring back banjo" guy makes a good point about subscription-only content)
Re: Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Is A Switch Remake Of A Wii Favourite
@Johnny44
There was definitely some rough performance in parts of the direct trailer which did make it seem like it was running on switch hardware though there was also some footage of what looked like FMVs.
though the game is multiplatform so i imagine trailers outside of the direct will be based on other versions.
Re: Random: Some Rare Fans Are Upset About The Latest Switch Online Announcement
@heisnbrg
Re: Surprise! Penny's Big Breakaway Is Available To Download Right Now
am curious to see how it performs on switch, the reveal trailer looked like it was running at 60 which is ideal for an action platformer but the video of the direct it looked lower.
could have been the video but im hoping that whether its 30 or 60 its stable since the core game looks amazing.
Re: Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Confirmed For Switch, Adds New Chapter & Storyline
@JohnnyMind
im hoping that down the line this version does make it to the switch successor (along with an option for people who bought it on og switch to "upgrade" for free like with some cross-gen games on ps5/xboxone)
though as it is its nice that its going multiplatform since im unsure whether this version on OG switch would get much in the way of improvements when it comes to performance, it may be like with pokemon S/V where the issues are likely too ingrained in the game to where a meaningful "fix" would be possible without completely redoing it.
Re: Five More Classic Rareware Games Come To Nintendo Switch Online Today
@Artonide
yeah this would be something i would love.
kind of like those evercade collections but for switch and including games from NSO.
as you said it feels unlikely sadly.
Re: Five More Classic Rareware Games Come To Nintendo Switch Online Today
@Henmii
its one of the reasons why i wish that NSO at least had an option to buy/keep the games. im not against the idea of the service existing i just hate that its the only way to play many of these games on switch despite them running natively on the system.
From what i gather the DLC that is offered with NSO can be bought independent of the service but the games sadly cant.
