Re: Poll: How Many Hours Have You Spent In Mario Kart World So Far?

KevinLo9

Mario Kart has always been my favorite franchise. This is the first time I’ve been extremely disappointed with the newest iteration. I’ve played it for 6 hours and I will never play it again, other than an occasional race with my son who likes it a little bit.
Luckily MK8 still exists. That will remain the definitive MK for another generation.

Re: Review: Mario Kart World (Switch 2) - The Perfect Introduction To A New Console Generation

KevinLo9

Mario Kart is my favorite franchise.
I’ve always felt that the newest version has been the best. That being said, I am having a hard time enjoying this game.
The structure of the Grand Prix is stupid, and it makes it where I can’t remember a single track despite getting gold in every cup.
The sound track is just a bunch of remixes and covers of old songs.
The open world is very boring and feels like a huge missed opportunity to fill with references to older Mario games.
Luckily Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still exists, because to me that is still the definitive MK game today.
This is not at all what I was hoping for, and with how much time they had to work on it, I find it shocking how few new ideas are present here.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (May 2025)

@Milton_Burle
There seems to be a strange unspoken bias against this game here that I haven’t been able to understand.
The first is a gem. One of the best roguelike games ever made. This one is far more complex, but it clicked and I’m hooked again.
I do wish NL would not be so stubborn and just review the game…
Monster Train 2 is truly special.
I’m glad to see it is charting so high in the digital only games chart, despite being blacklisted by NL and every other Nintendo specific site. So bizarre.

Re: Random: How Do You Find Out The Best 16-Bit-Era Game? Play Them All, Of Course

KevinLo9

Every review is a personal opinion. This is one man’s personal opinion.
I happen to agree with his findings in general. Having played Genesis and SNES heavily as a kid, I always found the SNES games to have better general quality, depth, and replayability.
Having continually replayed SNES and other classic games throughout my life, I have been surprised how poorly Genesis games have aged. Their controls are more rigid, and the sound is more tinny, and the graphics are more dark and ugly to me.
Indie games have been my favorite games for years, and I’ve found that most of them are heavily influenced by a great classic NES or SNES game. There are not nearly as many that you could point to that wear their Genesis / SMD influence on their sleeve.
The success of the Genesis was more a case study of the power of good marketing rather than in video game innovation.

Re: Soapbox: Six Months Later, Tears Of The Kingdom's Sense Of Wonder Is Still Unmatched

I found no joy in exploring the world of this game. I loved exploring BOTW’s world however.
I will never forget the moment of disappointment and frustration I felt when I realized the depths were as large as the surface map.
Every addition was a disappointment.
This game reinforced the absolute truth that bigger isn’t always better.
It’s a very good game and I enjoyed moments during my time with it, but I don’t think I would ever replay it again, and I was glad when it was done.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope 'The Last Spark Hunter' DLC Teased

@Friendly
I found having all of the characters at the start to be annoying even if it made sense narratively. Like I basically just picked some guys I liked and never needed to change them.
I also never felt like I had sufficient cover. In the original I could always tell when I was fully covered, but in this game no matter how well I thought I had done I still took damage.
Having random numbers and amount of enemies spawn rather than seeing their ears and being able to plan for their appearance the next turn.
I also found no humor or charm at all to the characters this time around. So basically yeah, I disliked nearly every aspect of this game.
Nice music and visuals. 😁

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom - An Absolute Marvel, But Is It Better Than BOTW?

KevinLo9

Honestly... I don't think there is anything this game does better than BOTW. I don't feel like the new powers are suitable replacements for the runes we gave up from the last game. The fuse ability should be usable from the menu instead of having to drop an item on the ground first.
The puzzles are less clear and I don't feel they are creative at all. I loved the elemental theme of the last game. This game leaned too hard into the creativity and the casualty was sound game design.
Also, how is it possible that there is actually LESS music in this game than there was in BOTW? My gosh, please put Zelda music back into your games, Nintendo!
I will finish the game, only because it reminds me of my favorite game ever... If it was any other franchise I would probably have stopped by now though.

Re: Review: Sports Story - A Long-Awaited Sequel That's Sadly Not Up To Par

KevinLo9

I bought this within minutes of launch. Had looked forward to this game since completing Golf Story.
I agree with the reviewer and the comments. I’ve had multiple game breaking glitches, there is horrible slowdown and even some pop-in which is inexcusable given the graphical style. All of the charm of the first game is gone entirely.
Sadly, this is the last in a string of sequels that disappointed me this year:

  • Blossom Tales 2
  • Mario + Rabbids 2 … (the first game is in my top 5 games for the system)
  • Sports Story

Each of these games felt like the designers lost sight of what worked and made the original titles so appealing.

Here’s hoping 2023 has more satisfying sequels.

Re: Community: Found A Great Switch Game We Didn't Review? We Want To Know

KevinLo9

Monster Train.
One of my favorite games on Switch is Slay the Spire. Monster Train takes everything I love about that game and makes it… dare I say, better?
The combat is more balanced and the level of customization of your buildout means that nearly every play-through is winnable. Don’t take that to mean it is easy by any stretch. It is, simply put, the most fair roguelike game I’ve ever played.
This game has been inexplicably neglected by sites such as this one, but give it a shot and I feel confident you’ll enjoy the ride.
