So much dross. It's the Wii library all over again. It's the downside of successful consoles. Great games swimming in shovelware.

They're all deserving to be honest. Great year for games and a lot of variety in the nominees.

I played the DS remake. It was a bit pants compared to other fire emblem games at the time and a shiny new coat couldn't hide its age completely.

Thanks for the info. As they were on offer I thought they might be a cheap way of picking up an extra set of joy-cons. Sounds like they're not worth it unless you're going to be playing those NES games a lot.

Might be asking a daft question but, can they be used as regular Switch controllers or are they just for use with NES or NSO games?

All the Pikmin games sales have been lukewarm. The fact Nintendo didn't give up before now shows their commitment to it. Wouldn't blame them for letting it go now.

@Creature Fair point, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would have made to Metroid's standing in the list as aside from Metroid Prime Pinball, I can't think of any Metroid themed spinoffs.

I sound like I'm having a downer on the series, which isn't my intention. It's just a perspective thing. When the latest Animal Crossing game outsells the entire series, for example...

In short, I hope Prime 4 does well enough that they do more Metroid games. But I can see why we don't get new games often.

@Doktor-Mandrake Facts, but at the end of the day, those franchises are dormant because they didn't sell enough, not because we as individuals thought that way. It's the companies that own the IPs. Sad

@MarsOne Hey man, Metroid Prime is one of my all time fave games so I'm not faulting the quality. But from Nintendo's POV, they've got to be looking at how much effort they're putting in to a series that ultimately only appeals to hardcore fans and won't do the big numbers. Returns on investments.

No idea why Metroid is even considered a big deal these days. It's their 15th best selling franchise, between Wario and Luigi's Mansion.

Lots of older gamers discovering that nostalgia is blinding.

Lots of younger gamers discovering that games were less forgiving and/or optimised back in the day.

Both discovering that straight ports are rarely as good as the original.

My wife will be pleased but I have to agree this looks a bit too much like the first game to warrant spending full price on it again.

Online Play and the NES and SNES titles make it a good deal in my opinion.

Looking at the kind of games these people have made in the past, it's quite impressive.

They're also not very Metroid-y games. Prime 4 could be a very different game to what we're expecting, in tone if nothing else.

@Drac_Mazoku I tried to compare Colour Splash and Origami King to Thousand Year Door, but they're such different games really I found it wasn't worth it. I like them all in their own way.

I just wish people could appreciate Origami King for what it is, not what it isn't.

Just finished Origami King. It was a joy to play.

And considering they couldn't create a lot of new characters, there was a lot of creativity in this game. Anyone who actually played the game could see that.

I doubt it matters that it's ex-rare staff these days. It's been 18 years. The fanbase that likes Rare games aren't exclusive to Nintendo consoles anymore.

Nintendo and Sega both refusing to admit how disruptive the pandemic has been. It's not just game announcements, but I reckon the games themselves are behind schedule. And they won't say because it will upset their investors.

I enjoyed Origami King. Very good game.

I had a think about which I preferred, but I stopped, because they're very different and aren't comparable. It's like comparing Tetris with Super Mario Land.

TTYD probably deserves to be top, but when it was first released it was called "Thousand Year Bore" by some for a reason.

It's a long, tough slog in some places with a difficult final quarter and lengthy cut scenes that you can't skip even if you've already seen them. So if you're playing for the first time, that's one "quality of life " feature you better be prepared to be without.

Other then that, it's a great game. I enjoyed SPM, Paper Jam and Colour Splash too, so would reccomend those.

I love them both! One of my top 10 games of all time. What a gem.

Maybe people's reactions (myself included) to games like this isn't about some bigger narrative. Maybe it's simply about NintendoLife putting time and effort into better games then this (regardless of boobs/violence/bloodshed or whatever)? Honestly, NL do a great job of reporting on Nintendo stuff that other sites do not. That's why I come here. And why I hold them to a better standard.
