Nintendo should absolutely continue to innovate. There wouldn't have been a Switch without Nintendo's experimentation. It's unbelievably foolish to say they could just keep releasing Switch 2, 3, 4 forever and people would just keep buying it because it had Switch in the name. It didn't work for the Wii U and the name Wii was just as well known at the time as Switch is now, arguably more so!
I think there's a happy middle ground to be met. I enjoyed Sword and Shield, but my biggest gripe with it was the battle mechanics feel so dated and slow now.
Having a wild pokemon in the red and with a status condition and just selecting Ultra Ball from a menu screen over and over again and having no luck? Infuriating and dull in 2021. I'd actually prefer Let's Go catching to that today, where the quality of your throw can make all the difference to whether or not you catch the pokemon or not, rather than some random catch rate stat in the background.
@kuri4 Hand on heart, I did not see your comment starting "here's the thing..." until after I posted mine. The fact mine started the same way as yours is a glorious coincidence! Haha
Here's the thing. There's nothing "classic" about Nintendo directs. They got on just fine without them for over 25 years before the first Direct in 2011. Times have changed, the way people digest media has changed. Directs had their time, now we get news differently.
Not strict at all. Very reasonable and any legit streamer or let's play channel pretty much sticks to these rules anyway to avoid YouTube's algorithm taking it down automatically.
Thanks for the info. As they were on offer I thought they might be a cheap way of picking up an extra set of joy-cons. Sounds like they're not worth it unless you're going to be playing those NES games a lot.
All the Pikmin games sales have been lukewarm. The fact Nintendo didn't give up before now shows their commitment to it. Wouldn't blame them for letting it go now.
@Creature Fair point, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would have made to Metroid's standing in the list as aside from Metroid Prime Pinball, I can't think of any Metroid themed spinoffs.
I sound like I'm having a downer on the series, which isn't my intention. It's just a perspective thing. When the latest Animal Crossing game outsells the entire series, for example...
In short, I hope Prime 4 does well enough that they do more Metroid games. But I can see why we don't get new games often.
@Doktor-Mandrake Facts, but at the end of the day, those franchises are dormant because they didn't sell enough, not because we as individuals thought that way. It's the companies that own the IPs. Sad
@MarsOne Hey man, Metroid Prime is one of my all time fave games so I'm not faulting the quality. But from Nintendo's POV, they've got to be looking at how much effort they're putting in to a series that ultimately only appeals to hardcore fans and won't do the big numbers. Returns on investments.
No idea why Metroid is even considered a big deal these days. It's their 15th best selling franchise, between Wario and Luigi's Mansion.
The best selling Metroid game doesn't break their Top 50 best sellers list.
@Drac_Mazoku I tried to compare Colour Splash and Origami King to Thousand Year Door, but they're such different games really I found it wasn't worth it. I like them all in their own way.
I just wish people could appreciate Origami King for what it is, not what it isn't.
And considering they couldn't create a lot of new characters, there was a lot of creativity in this game. Anyone who actually played the game could see that.
I doubt it matters that it's ex-rare staff these days. It's been 18 years. The fanbase that likes Rare games aren't exclusive to Nintendo consoles anymore.
Nintendo and Sega both refusing to admit how disruptive the pandemic has been. It's not just game announcements, but I reckon the games themselves are behind schedule. And they won't say because it will upset their investors.
I enjoyed Origami King. Very good game. I enjoyed Thousand Year Door. Very good game.
I had a think about which I preferred, but I stopped, because they're very different and aren't comparable. It's like comparing Tetris with Super Mario Land.
TTYD probably deserves to be top, but when it was first released it was called "Thousand Year Bore" by some for a reason.
It's a long, tough slog in some places with a difficult final quarter and lengthy cut scenes that you can't skip even if you've already seen them. So if you're playing for the first time, that's one "quality of life " feature you better be prepared to be without.
Other then that, it's a great game. I enjoyed SPM, Paper Jam and Colour Splash too, so would reccomend those.

Re: Sega To Share "Something Special" In Its First Live Stream Of 2021
"We're excited to announce... Sonic 2 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X!"
...
In all seriousness, hoping for an actual reveal, not an announcement about an announcement.
For a company that "can't wait!" to share news about what's next for Sonic, they sure have waited a long time...
Re: Feature: What’s The Sexiest Nintendo Console Ever?
The GBA SP Classic NES Edition thank you! Yum yum yum.

Man that box art takes me back to a simpler time. The nostalgia is real.

Anyone with one of these cards should hold onto it. Cards with mistakes tend to become quite collectable later on.

Re: What Are Your Most-Played Switch Games This Year? Find Out With Nintendo's Year In Review
Maybe it's something to do with data protection laws in Europe that mean Nintendo aren't allowed to crunch these numbers over here?
Or it's Nintendo being Nintendo.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #71 - Pokémon Stadium 2
This just makes me want Pokemon Stadium 3
Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
@kingbk Pretty much what I said I'd agree with you on the Switch having more good games too.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
So much dross. It's the Wii library all over again. It's the downside of successful consoles. Great games swimming in shovelware.
Re: The Game Awards GOTY Is The Last Of Us Part 2
They're all deserving to be honest. Great year for games and a lot of variety in the nominees.
The real winner? GAMERS!
Re: Poll: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & The Blade Of Light Is Out Today, Are You Getting It?
I played the DS remake. It was a bit pants compared to other fire emblem games at the time and a shiny new coat couldn't hide its age completely.
This will be a marmite game for those experiencing it for the first time.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Members Can Now Get 50% Off The Switch NES Controllers (Europe)
Might be asking a daft question but, can they be used as regular Switch controllers or are they just for use with NES or NSO games?
Re: UK Charts: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Debuts In Top Ten, But Can't Unsettle Next-Gen Stars
A competitive Top 10 is best. Long may it last.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #68 - Super Mario World
In the UK, we had the NA box and I always liked it. But now I've seen the alternatives...
I've gone with Europe. I prefer the red. The yellow is too bright on the Japanese one.

Sticking with Switch and PS4 for now. Not sure yet if PS5 or Series X will be next.
The 8% of people who said all three have too much money!

Lots of younger gamers discovering that games were less forgiving and/or optimised back in the day.
Both discovering that straight ports are rarely as good as the original.

Online Play and the NES and SNES titles make it a good deal in my opinion.
Re: Retro Studios Hires Industry Veteran To Help Steer Metroid Prime 4 Development
Looking at the kind of games these people have made in the past, it's quite impressive.
They're also not very Metroid-y games. Prime 4 could be a very different game to what we're expecting, in tone if nothing else.

Also, one random retailer in Guatemala? Is this really a credible source?

Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You
TTYD probably deserves to be top, but when it was first released it was called "Thousand Year Bore" by some for a reason.
It's a long, tough slog in some places with a difficult final quarter and lengthy cut scenes that you can't skip even if you've already seen them. So if you're playing for the first time, that's one "quality of life " feature you better be prepared to be without.
