Earlier today, The Pokémon Company unveiled Pokémon Unite, a brand new, upcoming online battle game for Switch and mobile devices. That's all well and good, but what on Earth is going on with its main promotional image?
In our rush to learn everything we could about the game when it was first revealed, we must admit that we didn't even notice anything was wrong. Taking a closer look, though, reveals that the Switch has been incorrectly mirrored, with a screenshot of the game being whacked onto a console that's clearly been messed up in editing (thanks @Akfamilyhome).
We'd assume this isn't intentional, but the image was shown during today's Pokémon Presents livestream and even serves as the official trailer's thumbnail. Did nobody at The Pokémon Company notice that the Switch's Joy-Con should be on the opposite sides, or that the buttons are reversed? As you can see, it isn't simply a case of the entire image being flipped because the in-game text is showing the correct way - somebody plastered this screenshot onto a backwards Switch photo.
Of course, it doesn't really matter all that much - we dare say there won't be many out there who can't identify which console the game can be played on thanks to the error - but it's still surprising to see.
Anyway, back to more important stuff - like getting far too excited about the new Pokémon Snap game!

That's certainly interesting, just kinda pulls back the curtain on how post editing works.
I'll admit, I had to do a double take because my mind was telling me it was mirrored, but my eyes were telling me everything was fine because the X and Y buttons looked fine... then I realized they look the same both mirrored and unmirrored lol.
How could Nintendo allow that video presentation with something shady inside??
That was so Unprofessional !
The interesting thing is that the ‘B’ does not appear to be mirrored?
These screen images are nearly always simulated. Guess they didn't realise that people would notice if they did that on a flipped image. Oops
@Drangor I hope they fire you for an unfair reason.
@Curly_Brace I think that's just an illusion. If you zoom in it's hard to tell; it's a very low quality image, so it's probably just your brain telling you that it looks like a regular B.
Oh no! We filmed this footage from the wrong side!!!
No problem, just reverse the image and edit the gameplay in. I'm sure no one will notice.
**everyone notices**
I didn’t even notice.
@Octane I keep going back and forth on that lol. Frankly, zooming in makes it seems like the bigger “bump” in the B is on the top (whereas a normal Joy-Con has the bigger bump on bottom), so perhaps it’s mirrored vertically?
Or the image quality is just confusing me
The Joycons drifted so hard that they did a 180.
Nintendo’s “Joy cons for Lefties” have been spoiled.
I noticed it but nobody listened to me. I’m a nobody.
@Curly_Brace I flipped it and it’s a normal B, must just be an optical illusion!
But you can get all blue and red Joyce's with the snipperclips pack
At least there wasn't a mouse pointer in the trailer.
Ha, this makes up for the horrible game!
And here I thought it was a hidden swastika or something.
Reporting the real issues
The switch was mirrored completely in the trailer? Well now I KNOW that this game is COMPLETELY unplayable! #GameFreakisOverParty
Left Handed Joycons confirmed! Lol.
Maybe Nintendo is releasing Joy-Cons for lefties?
Whilst the buttons are upside down I do have a red left and blue right joycon on mine.
Omg that’s hilarious
Giving Tencent access to Pokemon assets.
What could possibly go wrong?
That's a graphic "artist" for you. They are not the most logical people and are completely oblivious to ginormous details like this
Honestly, I'd love flip-flopped joycons to hit the market just go mess with people. 😉
The B is definitely backwards. Maybe looking over someone's right shoulder is proven to sell more than looking over someone's left so they had to mirror it?
Screenshots are always added after the photoshoot, without fail. (Mainly because having the game running on a Switch in advance of the photoshoot is unrealistic, but also because taking good photos of screens is hard.)
And photos are frequently mirrored to fit into advertising - but somebody forgot you can't mirror console controls.
This one gets an emphatic "meh."
@NEStalgia honestly the presentation is better than a lot of gamefreak titles. Not that this doesn't sound lame, but GF also sucks
HAHHH, as a graphic designer at my previous job for an ecommerce site, I was blatantly told to NEVER invert/mirror product shots for exactly this reason. You always want to show your product the correct way. Someone is bound to figure it out 🤣
However, putting screenfill images after the fact is toootally normal in the industry.
It's sad but so, so common, as anyone I the field of design, branding and content will be able to tell you.
Never push the intern to compensate for your own operational sluggishness. Even the creative industry will hit a brick wall at some point.
So, so common...
Nintendo packages the switch with red and blue, but also actually sells joy cons with the reverse
Nintendo Switch Lefty edition just got leaked lol
... so? If we're going to be this picky gamers will never be happy.
Are they trying to tell us that ....... yes they are aren’t they ........ yes it is it’s finally happening........ half life 3 confirmed! X
@Zeldawakening yes they do but the flipped red and blue colours don't have flipped buttons. The A,B,X,Y face buttons and the Home button are always on the right Joycon, not the left as is shown in the image.
Hey, at least they didn't leave a mouse cursor in the screen this time.
Again these types of articles are pointless 😂 please stop! Maybe focus on the game? Personally disappointed and I felt snap should have been announced this one rather than the first one.
In Japan they read books back to front... I just assumed their joycons were reversed as well.
If it was only shown in the short video I doubt anyone would have ever noticed. Using it as the main promotional image however is a pretty stupid thing to do.
I have several joycon colors for each side, and after trying out a bunch, I find I prefer red on the left, and blue on the right. That's how I've been playing my switch for 3 years now.
@Lawnachaun It isn't simply about the colors though, but about the buttons being
on the wrong side as well.
@RPGamer What you talking about Game Freak had nothing to do with this game and they don't own the Pokemon IP. This kind of error is very common with Chinese companies that make games off of popular properties.
@Anti-Matter eh, it's no worse than the number of blockbuster movies that have boom mics in shots, and inconsistent positioning.
@retro_player_77 they own a large portion of the Pokemon Company. https://www.google.com/search?q=who+owns+the+pokemon+ip&oq=who+owns+the+pokemon+ip&aqs=chrome.0.0.5038j0j4&client=ms-android-samsung-ss&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
@AlexOlney Careful Alex! We could easily make a mistake like that someday! 😅
Pokemon Unite accidentally leaks unannounced "left handed JoyCons"
@Kirgo Yes. That's completely obvious. Still doesn't change my statement tho.
@Roam85 aye Left Handed Joy Con due out this August.
Joy Con drift is fixed in these so even right handers will be interested.
@Kyloctopus lol!
@Tobo91 Yeah this is definitely a letdown
Maybe Joycons for left handed
TenCent is gonna micro transaction Pokémon Unite to death... Its gonna be unplayable unless you pay up. So far TPCI has announced this, a remake of one of the worst N64 games, a sleep app, another puzzle app, and a tooth brushing and that lets you or your kids catch Pokémon in a cartoon version of their mouth. I’m starting to worry about the sanity of the fan base at this point. TPCI is just gonna troll us all and Gen 4 remakes are going to end up as a Let’s Go game and we won’t get Johto at all...
