If Animal Crossing: New Horizons is starting to feel a little stale, you'll be very pleased to know that Nintendo has some lovely summer updates just around the corner, introducing some very welcome new features.
We've got the full rundown for you below - all of these updates will be available starting on 3rd July, so we don't have long to wait.
- Swimming and Diving – Grab a wet suit and get aquatically acquainted with your island marine life when swimming and diving arrive to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Swim in the inviting waters off the coast of your island and dive to discover and scoop up sea creatures that inhabit your island’s ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for any prospective additions to the museum, and make sure to listen for fun facts from Blathers when you donate your new discoveries.
- Pascal Brings Rewarding Recipes – While swimming, you might meet someone new! The friendly visitor Pascal seems to love scallops, and if you discover one while diving, he may ask you if he can have it. As a thank you, he’ll share some of his mermaid-themed DIY recipes.
- Gulliver? – After downloading the free update, a familiar face will occasionally wash up on shore, but sporting slightly different, pirate-like clothing. Offer him a helping hand and he’ll send a special reward to show his gratitude.
And that's not all! Nintendo also promises to provide us with another update in early August. Specific details for that one haven't been shared just yet, but we'll make sure to keep an eye out for more.
Excited to get stuck into these new changes? Let us know with a comment.

These updates look fantastic!! I was just starting to feel a little like I was running out of stuff to do so perfect timing!
I’m sooo hyped. Was waiting for the next update.
This is a great addition to the game.

IT'S BEEN 3000 YEARS!
This is gonna be awesome and fun. I wonder what are they gonna add August? Undersea map maybe?
Wow, fair play Nintendo, I thought a few of the updates so far were a bit underwhelming but this looks fantastic
Haha, that's great. Knew they would add swimming back eventually.
Yay! I can't wait to dive into those waters!
I knew we were due for another update with June wrapping up. This update also confirms the accuracy of the data mining speculation months ago, so that could spell a lot of great additional content coming for the game for quite awhile.
Oh goodie! Can't wait. But what about that wooden boat dock on the beach?
This looks like a lot of fun
This is why this is the best Animal crossing game ever, as it keeps on giving, why have all the features right from the outset and have way too much to do, these things are just coming out as I have pretty much finished decorating my island, and have around 500 hours invested.
Very cool, but I look forward to never seeing Gulliver because of how the current system only lets you meet two random visitors a week.
Will likely be more at the beach and in the ocean playing ac then irl
Today being the hottest day of the year so far in the UK, this couldn't come at a better time. AC smashes it again!
Excited for the new... wave of updates. Can’t wait to... dive in! (Har-har!)
@RupeeClock current? are you assuming that is going to change?
The diving and seafood catching had already been predicted so it wasn't a big surprise for me at least. Interested in the new Gulliver getup, what will that be? It's nice to see the mermaid set return!
Also I'm getting the update in my winter time so... it'll be weird, but I guess it's better than being forced to play in summer time when I'm freezing irl.
Nice. I can't wait to start diving! That was one of my favorite things about Animal Crossing New Leaf.
Time to go swimming now.
Really excited for this!
The next update better be Brewster and the cafe!
@cheesedude,
I don't mind Brewster, but I can live without him to be honest, on new leaf the main draw was K.K Slider played in the cafe on a Saturday, now we don't need that as he plays in front of the town hall.
@Crockin
Well it had already changed once before, when Leif was introduced as a weekly visitor.
It used to be that you would have two guaranteed weekly visitors, just Saharah and Kicks, leaving three days for random visitors.
Not including the weekend which is always K.K. Slider and Daisy Mae.
@johnvboy
No Brewster means no gyroids though. That is unacceptable.
@cheesedude To me adding Brewster feels like it could be more of an autumn thing. I kind of expect Kappn to appear in August with his boat to use that otherwise pointless dock.
My gut reaction to that was, “NOOOOO, don’t you know there’s Great Whites in there?!? Get outta the wateeeeerrrrrr!!!!” 😂
My wife is feeling poorly and this cheered her right up.
Awwwww yeah! I wonder what will be in that summer update #2.
@cheesedude,
I know I will be in trouble for this, but I am not to keen on the gyroids either, there is no need when you can decorate your island to the max anyway.
It’s pretty ***** that the spoilers are right in the title.
All this should be on the cartridge!
And here I was suspecting swimming would be the addition to the next game to sell the game.
And it'd work.
@gcunit - I feel ya. Though I can understand the argument of development time and "keeping the game fresh," I like the idea of being able to buy the game 6 years out to relive it and not have it supported.
Here is to a "complete" editions down the road, like Nintendo Selects of old, but better.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that tumble roll dive into the water. That in itself has been entertaining enough for me to rewatch the trailer several times. 🙈😂
I've actually been playing A LOT of animal crossing lol. I log in everyday to gift my villagers things and check out new items, etc. I also love creating micro environments for my villagers and recently have swapped out two villagers so was working on their houses. I'd like to make them furniture soon too. Still I'm always happy for more to do in this game. So I'm very happy for updates.
Loving these regular updates. Been playing for 30-60 minutes day, so it's still pretty fresh, and those updates just keep adding more content. Very cool.
(Fingers crossed for the "interactivity" update some time in the future. Every friend whom I show the game wants to ride that scooter, look into the sightseeing binocular thing, or use a wheelbarrow.)
@RiccyBobby That is pretty funny!
@SortingHat So u are cool with the swimming tho?
@SortingHat Yeah, I think New Horizons is really being held back by the save system, Nintendo must be really disappointed. But seriously, I doubt they are going to update that, just because it would be a major overhaul of how the game works.
I am so happy to see swimming and diving coming back. Super pumped! Will early August be Tortimer's Island? That would be awesome.
Animal Crossing, the gift that gives all year long!
@johnvboy That was in Wild World and the Wii game. In New Leaf, K.K. Slider only played at the club, though he could visit the cafe for coffee occasionally.
I wanted swimming and diving to return, but my land currently has shedloads of sharks...
The updates look awesome. My interest had started to wane a little... but to be fair I have put in over 150 hours.
This was so needed. I’m running out of corners to fix up, and have resorted to creating new profiles and houses.
@SortingHat
Which weird save system for New Horizons are you talking about? 🤔
The Cloud Save situation, the Transfer Save Data situtation, or the one island per Switch situation? 🤔
Imagine we get a space exploration update.
Wishful thinking but would be cool!
@Arnold-Kage I’m laughing on the outside but really crying bc your comment is so true
I'm all for them introducing things a little at a time. I've played 3 of the other Animal Crossing games. I've always triedt o make as much money as possible and "Rush" through them. With this one, I'm taking my time and enjoying what each day has to offer. I still haven't even tried to get my island to 5 star because I don't care about KK coming.
So just a couple of days ago I was thinking, Welp, now I'm down to only needing to play 10 minutes a day or so, so this will give me something new to do. I appreciate it. I feel like this should be a part of the free game (which it is) and I'd like a couple of more free updates (like Splatoon 2 did) but would gladly pay $20 for something more expansive that they might want to introduce later (like Splatoon 2 did), but not sure what that would be.
I will get the game on July 2020 so i can enjoy this swimming update. 😀
But unfortunately i will choose Southern hemisphere since i live in East Java and i will get Winter season instead. 😕
Swimming in winter season is not really good idea, right ? 😅
swimming >>>>>> wedding photos
@SoIDecidedTo KK comes to your island at 3 stars, not 5. Unless you mean he comes again at 5, I stopped caring after 3.
I’ve taken a couple weeks off but this will for sure get me back for some swim time!
I hope that eventually they add more things we could plant like vegetables and more fruits. Seasonal varieties would be terrific.
Also, it would be nice to have a pet dog, cat, or maybe even snake roaming about the island.
Basically make Stardew Valley but Animal Crossing. Lol
@rjejr OHHHHH that is good to know. I haven't even checked my star rating. I thought it had to be a five star island. I'll check today. Thanks for the tip!
Thank You, Nintendo, i'm really happy about diving returning in this update!
Has gaming changed drastically or something? I remember me and my friends playing Animal Crossing on the Gamecube for several years before we drifted away, not several months! The game has only been out 3 months and people are finding it stale?!
Very nice, really digging these updates. Hopefully Brewster and gardening are coming soon(these were both datamined).
@Franz
"Also, it would be nice to have a pet dog, cat, or maybe even snake roaming about the island."
Pet a dog when you are literally have a Dog villager in your island ?? 😂
@Anti-Matter The more dogs the better, if you ask me!
I didn't really like the swimming/diving mechanics in New Leaf, so I hope they're different this time around.
@SoIDecidedTo You're welcome. It didn't take much to get 3 stars, just ask Iasablle what to do. I think you need 2 bridges and or 2 slopes. And maybe all 10 villagers. She constantly ask me to chop down trees - I have a forest for an island, mostly fruit trees, no roads or fences, oh and no weeds, I hate weeds - so it should'nt really take more than a few days if you want. You don't need to finish the house, I was missing both upstairs and downstairs when KK came.
Hopefully I didn't spoil anything for you, there really wasn't much for 3 stars.
@ukaskew Animal Crossing is no longer a new series, and is no longer fresh to us. Also, many of us were younger when the GCN version came out. I was a young teenager. Also, we didn't have high-speed internet back then (which meant I didn't have access to internet all of the time and had to have other things to do. I played games a lot longer back then). Times have changed.
New Horizons has kept me occupied for a long time all things considered. I had dropped New Leaf long before this point in its lifespan. I'm still play New Horizons daily. Some days more than others.
@gcunit yeah so the data miners can ruin a whole year of surprises ? Naaah i don’t think so. AC gets a pass
I kinda wish they would just release these and let us discover what's in the update for ourselves. Think of how fun it would have been to suddenly discovery Gulliver wearing different clothes. Now it's going to be like, "Oh, yeah, I was expecting this."
@johnvboy noting stop Nintendo for making K.K Silder play in the Roost ounce the update that add this in the game.
way the Diving mecanic of Animal Crossing New Leaf is back, i can't wait to start Diving in Luxiere in early july and i wonder what contents the second major update in the final summer update have?
HeY!!! tHeY cOpIeD fOrTnItE!!!!
@WickedUnicarnBoi the Diving mechanic that the next major update for the game, is from Animal Crossing New Leaf, a game that was released for Nintendo 3DS 9 years ago
since now Nintendo is doing major updates for Animal Crossing New Horizons that fit with the seasons, we can expect Brewster in Fall or Winter along side Gyriods, things that Dataminers have found in the data of the game, so Cooking and Vegetables in Fall, Brewster, Gyriods and another Museum expansion in Winter?
Since they're theming the updates around summer, will the Froggy Chair make a return?
@Giancarlothomaz It was a joke. And an awful one at that
@Giancarlothomaz Yeah, I know. I was just making fun of kids.
Yay! They're adding stuff... that was in the previous game... that they cut from this one...
@ukaskew Unfortunately, this game launched pretty devoid of content, so yeah people are getting fed up because there's less in it than previous games in the series.
This is excellent!!! But what about the south? ❄️ Any update in the books?
@Giancarlothomaz
I could see them adding cooking in August (summer = outside = BBQ and stuff)
And with vegetables, growing corn and such is a summer thing.
But I agree, Brewster in the fall.
Can we get some surf...
@Ks123
I'm happy you got an laugh out of my comment "^^
Great! I haven't played since early June! I'll have to get back into the game now! (As though Pokemon and Xenoblade weren't already eating all my time!)
Seems cool but wow so dissapointed in the diving, I was expecting to actually swim under water and maybe find things on the see floor and see fish and coral etc
Awesome, can't wait. Thank you Nintendo!
Yes... YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES! I can also assume that since we have creatures that can knock us out on land, there will probably be one out in the water too!
Dropping mobile games to focus on successful titles is the best thing Nintendo has ever done.
