Veteran developer Rare celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2020. The British studio may be owned by Microsoft these days, but its back catalogue of brilliant games on Nintendo systems mean it will forever be associated with Nintendo in our hearts and minds.
The company, a second party Nintendo developer from the mid-'90s, bolstered (and rivalled) the platform holder's first-party offerings with an array of classics and cult favourites, including the Donkey Kong Country series, GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and--of course--It's Mr. Pants.
We’ve put together a little quiz to test your knowledge of Rare’s history and output throughout the Nintendo years. You’ll find brain-teasers covering the 8-bit NES era through SNES and N64 up to the GameCube.
So, let’s see how much you know about Rare(ware)…

If I don't get 100% on this, I am not worthy. Wish me luck
I got 10 right. These quizzes are great!
Aced! I kinda wish Rare would go back to making games like they used to. Sea of Thieves didn't do much for me personally.
5 for 15!!! Apparently i don't know squat.
6, but I got all the questions on the games I actually played, so that's something.
Maybe if Rare Replay actually released on the Switch I could, you know, study up...
I'm not worthy. 14 out of 15
9/15
I knew pretty much everything from SNES onwards, but almost nothing from the NES days and before. Come to think of it, I don't think I've even played a single Rare game on NES.
Cool quiz.
18 years since their last game for Nintendo.
6/15
That's because none of the questions was about Viva Piñata Pocket Paradise, then it would've been 7/15
9 out of 15 here. Aside from Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo-Kazooie, I didn't play too much of Rare's games. I did better than I expected, lol
12/15, happy with that
7/15.
I have a lot of history with Nintendo, but outside of DKC I've never really touched any Rare games, so they're not really an important part of my personal gaming history.
3out of 15, the only one that wasn't a guess was the Battletoads question
That thumbnail pic is playing dirty, Nintendolife! I come to the site and it’s the first thing I see, only to realize it’s a POLL!!! 😞😂
7/15. I don't know Rare as much as I thought I did.
Saw the "R", immediately thought Rare Replay for switch!! Such a fool xD
3. I don't know rare well
9/15 omg that's awful! where's the nearest bridge?
@jump Same here, rushed it and got two wrong because of that but good stuff.
10/15
I'm ashamed.
11/15...works for me.
Well... 4/15. I don’t get around to playing most rare games, so most of these were blind guesses.
12/15
Not so bad!
I have all Nintendo 64 Rare games, and many others to the Nes, Snes and Game Boy.
And of course, Star Fox Adventure.
10 out of 15............. not bad!
10/15 N64 rare is my jam, NES I know very little about.
2 out of 15. I know nothing about this company
4/15 My worst score yet. I took far to many guesses...
Gotta love the obnoxious plug for the cringy new Battletoads game.
3/15. I'd call that a total bomb.
Barry & Paul oh man, I’m howling 😂
For f**** sake. You can't just casually use an image from Rare Replay in a nintendo site.
My heart almost couldn't endure the emotion before I saw the title.
7/15. Misread a couple of the questions, but also guessed a few others, so sounds about right.
No more Rare articles.
If you want Rare Replay, go get an Xbox.
4. I never was that big a Rare fan to be perfectly honest, even with their Donkey Kong games. I think they're great games, just never was much of a fan of 'em because Donkey Kong as a whole never appealed to me much. And honestly none of their other titles ever really meant much to me either. Something about their games just tended to feel off to me even back in the day; the only one I spent a large amount of time with, was Diddy Kong Racing.
I was only really a 90s fan of them. The only Rare games from the 90s I do not own are Mickeys Speedway, and Diddy Kong Racing.
DKC, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Blast Corps, Killer Instinct, etc made the N64. I'd argue that the N64 was more of a Rare console than Nintendo...
This was really hard... yet somehow I got 14 of them. Many were educated guesses, though.
Jet Force Gemini was the only N64 game that made me want to get full completion on. Absolute perfection.
7/15. Never played a Rare game. Surprised I got that much.
11/15. Didn't know Kid Klown, never played R.C. Pro AM or Banjo Tooie (Or any Rare game other than Banjo Kazooie, the SNES DKC trilogy, Diddy Kong Racing, and decent bit of Blast Corps.), and forgot about Conker in DKR.
@Inc Their last original game on a Nintendo platform was 15 years ago in Banjo Pilot on the GBA, and their last game on a Nintendo platform was 13 years ago in Diddy Kong Racing DS. If you're only talking about console games, then you'd be correct, with Star Fox Adventures, which is 18 years old.
Never forget Ken Lobb!
8/15 much better then I expected....but some of them were lucky😂
I got 12/15. Can't complain.
This made my heart skip a beat! I almost thought Rare Replay was finally being ported to Switch. XD
Of all of Microsoft’s games, this one makes the most sense to be ported. Surprised it hasn’t.
11/15 Not bad, considering how little I actually know about Rare.
9/15. But I admit two I got right were complete guesses
I got 11 out of 15, including the last one. Star Fox Adventures is still a sore subject for me, especially after seeing one of Larry Bundy Jr's Fact Hunt videos.
I got the Klobb question wrong LMAO. I thought Ken worked for Rare, not Nintendo.
11 out of 15. I'm going to dispute that "first game under the Rare banner" question.
I don't think any of them were sold originally as "Rare" games. At least, they only got their name on the box as a tiny mention on the back.
Two were published by Nintendo and two by Milton-Bradley.
"Spyder trademark" Is that referring to the clothing company, or something else? I think trademark rules only apply if it is a similar product.
7/15 - those early historical questions were hard!
A ‘factoid’ is not the same as a fact. In fact it’s the opposite, it’s something that is thought to be a fact but is actually untrue. A common misconception.
So Brentilda didn’t help the player with factoids, that would be leading the player astray, she helped them with facts.
I'm gonna save myself the trouble of taking the quiz, and just say no, not very familiar with that part of gaming history!
Okay, curiosity killed the cat...and I surprised myself with a 7/15. Weird!
15/15: Thank you treasure trove of old magazines, for your years of informative little nuggets.
i got 9 out of 15, i am a rare fan, i do not think there was ever a better arcade company ever.
@Zadaris what mags have you got?
13/15 😁. I'm a genuine Rare fan.
Rare Replay needs to be on the Switch. Like if Microsoft allowed Cuphead, Ori and Super Lucky's Tale on the Switch, they should allow this collection of 95% Nintendo titles.
@Slowdive I failed counting that, too. I remembered the GBC game and obviously Conker's Bad Fur Day but I didn't count Diddy Kong Racing in spite of being one of my favourite games ever and playing almost always with Conker because he's cool and balanced like Diddy.
@Ogbert Yes, what Brentilda did in the game was reveal Gruntilda's secrets, not factoids.
@Ninfan They're better than Nintendo, in my opinion 😁.
@BlueOcean ouestion? have they released any arcade games lately?
12 out 15. I thought it would be much harder. I thought if they throw some ZX Spectrum questions at me I'm toast. Decent quiz, got me in the mood to play more Rare Replay. On a related note I had often hoped that Rare would be able to remaster Jet Force Gemini in HD, and they did with modern twin stick controls. The fans wishes were granted and not many people cared, but oh well it's great.
@Ninfan They were good in arcades but, Sega AM2 says what's up.
@BlueOcean I used to feel that way in the N64/Gamecube era. Back when they were kings.
@TrevorMcD where did you get the user name?
My friend . Nickname.
14/15. I forgot Conker was in Diddy Kong Racing. ARGH
7/15 - My lack of knowledge on NES-era Rare did me no favours here (that and not remembering Conker's appearance in Diddy Kong Racing, despite somehow remembering the obscure Game Boy game).
7 out of 15. This was a hard one.
I only played one rare game so i'n not taking the quizzes.
8/15 for me this time
Having just done some research I’ve discovered that I have never played a Rare game so for me to get 4 was decent
Anyone else hate that MS owns Rare IP? No? Just me?
I got a big fat 5... Did I pass?
@Ogbert Ha, I blame Steve Wright (British radio DJ with a long-running show featuring a trivia section called Factoids).
If we’re having fun with it, ARE they really facts, though? They change with every save file, so who can say what Grunty’s school nickname really was in the grand B-K canon? Maybe we’ve stumbled on some TRULY ‘alternative facts’...

11/15. I'm OK with that.
@dartmonkey Do they? Every time I play the game the same consistent things are said about Gruntilda, even though the order of the reveals is random 😊.
@Ninfan Well, if you have an Xbox One, play Rare Replay. If you don't have an Xbox One, buy an Xbox One/Series S/Series X 😁 to play Rare Replay. A gamer without Rare Replay isn't a gamer. The last "arcade" game that they have released would be, I think, Jetpac Refuelled but my favourite "arcade" game is Grabbed by the Ghoulies.
@TrevorMcD That was an awesome adittion, updating the controls of Jet Force Gemini in Rare Replay. There are many improvements in that collection, like Conker's Bud Fur Day looking stunning in native 1080p, the 4K update for the 360 games (on Xbox One X) and Grabbed by the Ghoulies at double frame rate and native 1080p and... well, I prefer the Xbox One controller for the N64 games.
Ironically could have done with a Blast corps question. Nice quiz though.
Not even going to try, it will mostly be guessing I, well, guess. But the Rare Replay picture clickbait worked.
Has Nintendo Life received a memo from on high to never mention Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 ever again?
10 out of 15...hmm I wasn't that good.
