Re: Review: 3D Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (3DS eShop)

@Dpishere The reason I like Sonic 2 but not love it was because its forgiving difficulty. I understand why some people love it for exactly the same reason. Recent sonic games such as Colors and Lost World have difficulty settings that suit me better.

@BulbasaurusRex Unlike you, I cannot stand Sonic Rush - I had trouble watching both screens simultaneously, and I really disliked splitting the screen into half. I regarded Sonic Colors sort of a mix of old school and new school design - the bottomless pits just encourage you to keep trying until success. In addition, there are lots of wisps underwater in Sonic Colors, and so I thought that the underwater section was sped up as a result (as compared to old sonic games where you have to tolerate those slow underwater sections). Again, my personal opinion only.

I could not stand Werehog section in Sonic Unleashed... and Sonic 2 was really really easy until the factory stage (which was not too hard for me anyway).

@BulbasaurusRex If you find Sonic 2 to be difficult, then Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World would be ultra difficult to you. To me Sonic Colors is the best 2D Sonic and Lost World is the best 3D. Somehow, however, Sonic Team made a decision to make the modern sonic game more difficult than their Genesis counterpart.

Sonic 2 is really easy because even if one sucks in gaming they can just make Sonic running to the end.

@Dankykong As said by many players before, Lost World does not have bad design. When people complain about it it is because they die too often in this game. Expert reviewers are very divided about this game: some love it and other hate it. It is, however, more difficult than Genesis Sonic games. I think people think Lost World was bad because they have compared the game with Mario games, which tend to have strong exploration aspect. But does Mario Galaxy has bad levels? Yes - I still remember trying to stump the beetle boss which flies around a bush for 30 minutes but still could not kill it because players could not perceive the 3D distance on a 2D screen. I still remember playing those pinball stage for 30 minutes but keep dying because of poor control.

@Kage_88 You have missed Made in Wario (basically trash) and Mario U.

@ShadJV That is because not everyone thinks Galaxy 1 and 2 are as good. Galaxy 1 has the problem of depth perception. I still remember that there was a boss flying around a tree truck and I could not kill it because I could not perceive the 3D distance between me and the boss. It took me an annoying 40 minutes to kill it by trial and error. Galaxy 2 is better. But still, 2D mario is a lot of times better than its 3D counterpart (exception: Mario U and Luigi U, which are both rehash of the original games) - just look at the sales.

Honestly, optic disc drive is outdated. On Xbox One I don't understand the purpose of having a disc drive - the game is installed or downloaded anyway on hard drive. How many people still watch DVD or Blueray disc? Everyone downloads. So the move to remove optical drive will save cost.

I played this game on PC and I like this game. This game, however, was designed primarily on PC but surprisingly not optimised in my i7 computer with noticeable slowdown. A lot of recent sonic games are better than this (though Sonic Boom was a failure). When people say this is better than sonic this is a conundrum to me.
