As Shigeru Miyamoto famously said "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.", with this in mind perhaps we should be thankful that SEGA has decided to delay the release of upcoming 3DS platformer Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice to next year.
In a recent blog post on SEGA's website an explanation was given for the delay:
In order to make sure the game has the time and polish needed, we're moving it out into 2016. No exact window from us, just yet – it'll be ready when it's ready!
In the grand scheme of things, while the downside is that you won't be playing the game this year, the upside is that what you'll play next year, and what fans will continue to play for years after they pick up the game, will be a stronger, more enjoyable experience.
We think that's important, not just for this one game, but for all future Sonic titles.
Given the lacklustre reception given to Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and its Wii U counterpart Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, this is probably for the best. As always, let us know what you think about this delay with a comment below.

This actually looks nice!
Playing Super Mario Maker and clearly doesn't care about the upcoming Sonic game
Hm? Oh. Sure. Whatever. Okay, next level!
Huh. No Sonic game this year. Odd
They're learning.
It's still be bad. lol
@ShanaUnite Indeed they are.
im sorry did they say "need more polish?"
is sega learning there mistakes and pushing back the title and make it better? sound like to me!
i'll wait and see, hopefully it well be better haven't play a sonic game since colors, (i do want Generations because that does look really good.)
Wait, so Sega is learning from their mistakes and actually delaying a game instead of just pushing it out unfinished? Because if so, that's a very good thing.
Doesn't look too bad really. I think its good they are just sticking with one title, instead of a Wii U title as well. Any delay is a bummer, but for SEGA; this is good. Release the game when it is ready.
My question is what game comes AFTER this? Is it another Sonic game or did someone remind Sega they have more than one franchise?
@Aozz
I know right? Sega seems to be listening to the fans and taking their time with this one...
Then again it's a "boom" game.
Oh and get Generations it's the best modern sonic game among an okay Sonic lost worlds and... boom
It's still going to be terrible and will sell terribly due to the last two ab******s that were sonic games.
Bring Sonic Generations with new content to the WiiU Sega!!! That was the last great sonic to me.
Instead of a 2.5 it'll be a better game at 3.0 thanks to this delay.
Quite frankly, I really enjoyed Shattered Crystal, it was a fun collect-o-thon platformer, and just think it needed more polish, length and boss. There was nothing wrong with the game per say, and all the bad press it received was almost like a side-effect of the Wii U game and how horrible it was.
So all the extra time they can take to make the game a better experience is good news to me. I'll be buying this game when it comes out.
Does it need more time or are they just trying to avoid releasing in between 2 Zelda games?
Ethier way good news.
@Drac_Mazoku The one major problem I found was you couldn't just play through the levels, they made you go back and collect everything.
@SirQuincealot Indeed, but it is the case with EVERY Collect-o-thon platformer, and if you take the game from what it was instead of what it could be, it becomes not so much a problem anymore. I enjoy 100% in all platformer anyway, so I didnt saw it as an obstacle for me.
It's not a good way to do this, Sega. It never is.
Btw, There are Sonic Boom Fire & Ice toys coming to Carl's Jr.
SEGA actually delaying to make quality games.........not bad.
Still, I wonder how this will turn out in the end. Even if its bad, atleast they want to deliver quality so hopefully, the glitches won't be that noticeable.
@Drac_Mazoku I agree with you 100%! I'm also excited for this game.
I'm glad that they're delaying the game until it's ready. It's unfortunate that it's not going to be out around the Holiday season, but I think they'll make more fans happy, including me, with this choice of waiting and making the game the best it can be. Hopefully SEGA will develop this habit of waiting to launch the game until it's ready for future titles, too.
Is there going to be a 25th anniversary Sonic game next year? (besides this one)
@Volcanox Haven't you play Sonic Runners on Android or Iphone? It is so good!
@Ryu_Niiyama Well its the 25th Anniversary next year and Sonic Team must be up to something about now. Maybe a Generations 2 since that was received very well?
@GreatPlayer I have yes. Not recently though. I only play on my phone when travelling or when really bored.
If it makes the game better, then excellent! I quite liked Sonic Boom for the 3DS, so hopefully they can make the game better in the sequel.
Looking forward to this one.
@Volcanox Hey, you should also try Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom.
@GreninJovan I did not know Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom. Sega seems really into Sonic Boom. At least the cartoon is really funny.
Maybe this sonic game might actually be good! After all, sonic has generally had some well recieved portable games, like Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush.
Still doubt it'll be any good.
Whatever you need to not screw it up.
Never thought I would say this but delay it as long as you can, in the mean time I'll just be here playing pretty awesome inspired sonic levels in super Mario maker!
@abbyhitter your profile pic makes it seem like a sarcastic statement hahaha
It can only be a good thing. Sega have pushed out a Sonic game every October/November for years now like it's a football franchise. We just want one decent game every now and then, not an awful one every year. I guess they still get their annual Sonic release with the Olympic game due out soon though.
They still have that redundant fire symbol over the ice, as if the whole premise of the game wasn't enough of a hint that you need fire to melt ice. As if every video game ever hasn't used fire to melt ice. As if this is some new idea they are pioneering and they must hold our hands so we don't wrack our tiny minds trying to figure out "OH NOO WHAT DO WITH ICE IN GAME ABOUT FIRE AND ICE?????"
Since you're delaying the game Sega, for god's sake get rid of that. It's demeaning.
Delay is fine by me. Will pick it up one day if money allows.
This past weekend I worked towards completing both Rise of Lyric and Bayonetta 2. It was quite weird playing 2 games with such a staggering difference in quality.
There goes the only remaining 2015 3DS game I was looking forward to. Oh well, more money to spend on Rock Band 3 and 4 (360 and XB1 respectively)!
I'll buy but since just recently, I played sonic adventure 2 for the first time, and this announcement to me is just meh. I mean if it's good, I'll buy, but I just want a good sonic game again for his 25th anniversary. Aka sonic generations 2, colors 2, lost world 2(without the poor level design of the later half of of lost world 1), another take at classic sonic, or of course adventure 3 since a ton of sonic fans would buy just because of its name.
Who fell for Official Nintendo Magazine's trick into giving the original Sonic Boom 99% making y'all buy it? I wish ONM was still alive; such a great mag and I enjoyed picking it up from my local newsagent just around the corner from my house.
On-topic, I highly doubt I'll try this out, since SEGA has been disappointing me a lot lately with their Sonic games. They seem to be getting worse and worse. Maybe if it gets positive and non-sarcastic reviews, I'll pop in and have a look.
To be honest, this game looks decent going by the trailer. And the fact Sega is smart enough to delay the game when it wasn't finished proves they learned something.
I'll admit making another Sonic Boom game was a bad move, but if this game is decent I doubt this will be the death of Sonic we all been predicting.
FINALLY!
It's much better to at least have a polished game than to have another '06! Lost World in this regard was quite good, but Rise of Lyric, judging by the opinions and the videos, was not. Then, of course, being without obvious glitches is just the first step, but at least this step has to be taken!
good! we need this game to BE GOOD and not suck unlike the sonic boom games from last year
@DEAD fantastic profile pic
I really enjoyed Shattered Crystal a lot, and believe a lot people dismissed it because of the problems with Rise of Lyric. If Fire and Ice turns out to be better then Shattered Crystal then it will definitely be worth getting.
It's about time Sega learned that quality is miles ahead of quantity, ESPECIALLY for Sonic. Personally I would have preferred to see what Rise of Lyric would have been had it actually been finished instead of making another game just like the one nobody played.
@AshFoxX Rise of Lyric took 5 years to produce. Is that a rush? BigRedButton screwed it up. They even made a blatent lie that Sega did not tell them that the game would be on a Nintendo platform, when every single Sonic game in recent years has been put on Nintendo platform.
@GreatPlayer It's a mobile game. It's available in Canada & Ireland.
Btw, there's so much controversies here:

@Nintendo_Ninja Thank!
They should bring more ways to run, for instance, Sonic should be able to ride a hover board and do tricks. Also, Sonic could ride a bull or even team up with a gorilla. They could possibly make a Sonic Safari.
Players could customize their character with hats or new clothes. Sonic doesn't have to run all the time to be fun.
Looks like a fun game, even if the art style doesn't really read as clearly as I feel a Sonic game ought to.
