Those are great numbers and I am happy for them, but a small distinction needs to be made: “downloaded” does not necessarily mean “sold”. Case in point: I have downloaded the game twice, as I have 2 Switch consoles, but only bought it once. Also it is entirely possible to download multiple times for other reasons, e.g. you change your SD card and do not want to copy the contents of the old one over, or you get bored and uninstall the game, then decide to install again, etc.
@Zuljaras You’re in for a treat with Metroid Prime then. The Metroid Prime games aren’t FPS games as such, they are more like their 2D predecessors than the screenshots would have you think.
@sleepinglion Good idea, but I personally would prefer a Sega Ages version of Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death-adder, which was my favourite coin-op game of all time and was never officially released on anything else.
Not holding my breath, but I wish EA went back and remastered their EA Sports BIG releases, specifically SSX and SSX Tricky, as well as NBA Street and NBA Street 2. I realize licensing issues are present in both (music in SSX, NBA players and music on NBA Street) so, as I said, not holding my breath.
More realistically, Mass Effect Trilogy (not Andromeda) should be a priority - it is a fantastic saga that deserves to be kept alive.
But if they go way back, how about the Command & Conquer series? There is even an upcoming remaster of C&C 1 and C&C Red Alert that could be considered.
I am not sure that sharing this kind of information is doing us any favours. If you thought the “one island per Switch” restriction was unpopular, I’d like to have your opinion on “no items on tables” or “no Edit Mode” possibilities.
Error-fest at start, then they took down the server. I tried after the hour had passed and, surprisingly, it was up and running! I had a couple of matches; it does look fun but I have some gripes: 1. The control config feels wrong. Strikes are mapped to R and ZR while specials are on X and Y - I definitely feel it should be the other way round and I hope there is an option to remap in the final game (failing that, I can always remap via the System menu, but that is far from ideal). 2. The field of view (I think) makes the enemies look smallish, which doesn’t help much. 3. After creating a character really quick (as I was in a hurry to get 1h of play), I found that I didn’t like her that much, but I did not see an option to change the model, only gear and colours (I think) - hopefully this is getting sorted for the full release.
Other than that it looks great and I really like the art style. A special thanks to the developers for going with 60fps; much appreciated, even if it seemed to have some hiccups here and there!
Personally I have always valued performance as an essential element of the graphics, so I am happy Shin’en are getting some recognition here. I agree with most other choices (glad that the much-underrated ARMS is getting some love) but I would also add Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and Rocket League (60 fps goodness), as well as the recent remasters of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, especially Crash Team Racing, for managing to stand shoulder to shoulder with their PS4/Xbox counterparts (all versions run at 30 fps).
PS: Digital Foundry have praised some Switch ports like Alien: Isolation, Call of Juarez, and the Metro collection as great showcases of Switch graphics.
I have said it before but I will reiterate on the off-chance someone with decision-making powers sees this: there should be Breath of the Wild sets based on the LEGO Elves series, as the Elves look very similar to the Hylian folk and the general fantasy aesthetic of the LEGO Elves is perfect for the Zelda series.
@edhe I had the same issue yesterday while trying to add funds through the Nintendo website (Europe). Card that previously worked fine was rejected, while another card that previously didn’t work took me to the Verified by VISA password entry, then Nintendo website told me authentication had failed, even though I am 100% sure I entered the correct data everywhere. This is particularly annoying now as I can’t easily go to my bank, contacting them is a “please hold” hassle, and there’s a sale!
Now my mind created an Animal Crossing/Blackadder crossover, specifically using that 2nd series episode where Blackadder sails to unknown lands with Tom Baker as a (literally) legless captain.
I can see Tom Baker now, as Tom Nook: “You have a woman’s tent, my Lord! I bet it has never been used to house a starving, unwashed army just back from the Hundred Years War!”
Stephen Fry’s Melchett will probably be fulfilling the young Nooks’ role.
I had been looking to buy a second “HAD” Switch for the increased battery life and better thermals, so when the Animal Crossing limited one was announced, I went for it. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised because I expected them to do a Switch Lite limited. In any case, I’m in Europe and my ACNH Switch came with a download code for the game, which I installed on both Switch consoles.
PSA: You can play multiplayer with just the one digital copy of the game. I have my son playing on my primary console using his own account - a child account under my own, but that doesn’t matter as far as I know; the game simply needs to be started on the primary console of the game owner by a different account that has Nintendo Switch Online. I play on my new, “secondary” Switch under my own account. The game checks if it can be played at start (via internet) so the secondary Switch needs to be connected. Once each of us made his own island and once the airport opened, we could fly to each other’s islands fine. Important to note: this only works using the ONLINE mode, not the Local mode. Also this works for other digital games as well; we have tested it with Stardew Valley and Dauntless (though the latter is F2P so no worried there).
@Joriss Animal Crossing already recognizes the Joy-con colours; it uses this to recognize if you have the limited AC Joy-cons and awards you the AC Nintendo Switch as shown in the article. I was able to unlock the AC Switch on my original Switch by pairing the AC Joy-con and starting the game.
Obviously they may add the different colours later, but I’d much rather they added some playable games to the Switch, same as in the original Animal Crossing for Gamecube.
For a while now I have been playing: 1. Stardew Valley - it is a very relaxing game and amazing piece of gaming art, especially given that it is the work of a single individual. 2. Dauntless - I am not one for free-to-play games, but this one is quite well-designed so that you don’t feel pressured into spending money. Also it supports cross-play, so I can move over to the PS4 when my son decides to play on the Switch.
Neat; if they decide to do The Legend of Zelda sets, I hope they make a Breath of the Wild set under their LEGO Elves series, which I always thought looks exactly right for it!
Fun fact: Michael Jai White, who played Al Simmons/Spawn in the 1997 film adaptation, also played Jackson Briggs in the 2010 short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.
PS: I know that Spawn film is considered crap, but it’s a guilty pleasure of mine, mainly because of the amazing soundtrack that featured electronica vs. rock/metal collaborations, such as Prodigy & Tom Morello (One Man Army), Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot (No Remorse), etc. They are barely in the film but they make an amazing soundtrack CD!
I have played this on iPhone and it definitely is a great puzzle game with a lovely presentation. It is sort of similar to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker but you control the character differently. A remarkable thing was that the file size on iOS was only 6 Mb!
I would love a Soul Calibur game on Switch. SC6 over on PS4 has Geralt in it and since The Witcher 3 is on Switch, that would be an additional incentive for potential buyers. Now, if they’d add Link as a Switch-exclusive character, we’d be able to have the Link vs Geralt match we’ve been dreaming of!
Having said that, I was not very impressed with SC6 - the game itself is OK, but the presentation is lacking, e.g. the “character selection” screen is just a text menu where you have no character preview; instead, you select “Siegfried” and “Costume 1” or some such. Also, there is SO much loading (on PS4 Amateur, at least).
I’d love to have a new SC game with console-related exclusive characters like it was in SC2: this time they could go for Link (Switch), the reimagined Kratos from PS4’s God of War, and Senua from that new X-box exclusive Hellblade sequel. And they can maybe finally include Cloud as a guest character (he was previously rumoured to have been the first choice for PS2’s SC2).
Maybe a sequel to Nier: Automata, technically a “4th” game in the series if we count Drakengard as the first?... I thought of this because of the distortion in the first image.
That’s... OK I guess, Namco, but what you REALLY wanted to revive from the Gamecube era is Soul Calibur 2, isn’t it? With a Breath of the Wild costume for Link? And Sophitia and/or Siegfried joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?...
@Mr_Pepperami “Gris Autosport” sounds like a great sequel/crossover! Presumably the girl now has a racing car to help her navigate the hand-drawn world... (sorry, couldn’t resist )
@Zuljaras I am in the same boat. Fangamer even told me they “don’t have any information” on when and where the “updated cartridges” will be available. They were, however, sorry for the inconvenience, so “yay” I guess...?
@MasterGraveheart The Hollow Knight misstep: they did NOT make it right for everyone. I am guilty of the sin of living in Europe and they basically told me they will not replace my cartridge. So one can understand how reading this article makes me feel.
@Xylnox @Friendly FYI, the 3.4 patch also removes the nudity censorship, e.g. Yennefer at the start of the game - pre-patch she wore underwear and an awkward “bandage” that came and went between camera changes during the cinematic. After the patch, the scene matches the PS4 version.
I played it a bit but deleted after 3 days or so. Looks good, but controls are imprecise at best, although the monetization crap is the main villain. Scores, coins, cups, rubies, time-limited prize availability... but what really annoyed me was how you can come in 1st place way ahead of the other racers and still not “win” - you get less than the top prize because you did not achieve a certain score. Thanks but no, thanks.
“A class-action lawsuit has been raised against Nintendo on this matter, and the company has started to repair impacted Joy-Con for free.” Not in Europe, they haven’t. And all 4 of my Joy-con are drifting.
