As you've no doubt realised if you've been anywhere near the internet over the past few hours, the big story doing the rounds in the Nintendo-sphere at the moment is PlatinumGames' recent The Wonderful 101 Kickstarter campaign.
The crowdfunding effort has seen immediate success, smashing its goals to confirm the release of a remastered version of the Wii U game on Switch, PS4 and Steam. It's already amassed way over $1 million in funding, too.
That number also happens to convert to a total over 100 million yen, and the team at PlatinumGames filmed the exact moment that mighty figure was reached. In a tweet, the studio has given "tremendous thanks" to backers - and there's even an appearance from Twitter-blocking Kickstarter tier star Hideki Kamiya himself.
Amazing stuff.

Awww they look so happy. It's really awesome seeing so much support for 101.
Hideki Kamiya should be in the game as a character called "Wonder Block".
Yataaaaa!
Look at that smug grin. He's like, "Yea, this games comin one way or another"
They should've waited for the 101 million mark. xD
Blessed! but they couldve waited for the 101 heh
It’s got to be nice for them knowing that fans all the world love their games and want to support them. It was a big decision self publishing but the fans are behind them.
The real stars of that video are those awesome movie figurines in the display cases.
Still, congrats to Platinum for reaching goals. Glad The Wonderful 101 is getting a second chance in the spotlight. There is a ton of nuance to the game that even I couldn't fully grasp. I managed to finish it, but I got a lot low performance ratings.
@GamingFan4Lyf I always get low grades in Platinum games, but I have a blast with them anyways. Can’t wait to try this one!
I’ve nearly bought the game on wiiu so many times. Average reviews have put me off. Just not sure I care. See what happens
@sandman89 It was an average game. I am not sure why everyone is so interested in it now.
I think the opportunity to get blocked on Twitter by Kamiya for $100 meant a lot to people.

5 articles about this kickstarter today already.
pledged my support for a Switch physical copy today. Still got my WiiU copy and im sure used copy prices may start to go up for it too now. Its a decent, unique game. it had a few flaws but I'm sure they'll address those as best they can.I'm not sure it'll do too well on ps4 personally and obviously the Switch will see more sales I imagine. is it right its releasing this April too?
I don't get why people are so excited about this game.
@teamdoa because it’s on the switch likely 🙄🤣
@Mynemo Why? Do you also not get why people are excited whenever a new Smash Bros game comes out? Why people are excited whenever they get a new Mario game? Any game they like(d) or find interesting?
It's not rocket science mate.
I hope they completely overhaul the control scheme, like a ground-up redesign. This game has enormous potential, but it’s just too frustrating in its current state.
@Mynemo It's Pikmin made by Platinum. Now it's Nintendo's turn to announce the real Pikmin for Switch.
They ARE trying to gauge interest, after all. I daresay Kickstarter has delivered to them in spades so far! Platinum is also an established studio, so they're bound to deliver on their promises for this game.
These guys are doing some great PR imagine how many more articles are being published about them this week! A new Neir would be great
I don't do Facebook, Twitter, etc. etc. etc.
Sorry but you lot are being suckered into a good social marketing campaign.
Kickstarter is such a great platform for helping small unknown companies find an audience for developing new IP.
@chiptoon I see what you did there.
Tiny tiny cubicles. Japanese work culture is the worst
@teamdoa for many people it was average, but for others (including myself) it was incredible!
Wonderful simply Wonderful !
So why do people care about this game now? Not even wiiu people cared for it really....
@teamdoa You forgotten how opinions work bro?
@Lady_rosalina it's like 15,000 dude. There isn't some huge fanfare over the game.
@Mynemo Because not everyone is you.
@Kalmaro
Fufufu, somebody's in for a treat when he gets the game ^^
Congrats Platinum!
Do one need to back this to get a physical copy or will there be a retail release?
What an amazing second chance this game is getting. Sleeper hit on a console that failed pretty badly, but enough people are showing just how much they either want to play it again on a modern system, want the chance to play the game without buying a dead system, or want to ensure this becomes an IP that gets sequels and rereleases, which I think this success pretty much has done.
@Blizzia Ok mate just cool down geez
@Mynemo I'm perfectly calm
@teamdoa - It's a grass-is-always-greener sort of thing. I remember when people blamed Nintendo for "taking away" their games to "force" them to be exclusive. Anything with Platinum apparently deserves to at least be on Playstation according to that lot.
Which is amusing, as Nintendo is the REASON all three of Platinum's exclusives even exist.
@Angelic_Lapras_King - Ehhhhh, 1-million in funding isn't exactly "success." This game can still die just right out the gate and that'll be it. 17k supporters isn't exactly HUGE.
So I’m confused by this. I read that the Switch version is already done and we’re getting a release soon. Is that true?
@Lady_rosalina yeah. I didn’t care for it that much either. The controls were frustrating and it literally felt like a bone to chomp on while waiting for Bayonetta 2
@infernogott : No kidding. More like 7 or 8 in the past 24hrs.
Played it on Wii u and liked it, even if the controls where a bit fiddly. Never finished it though, I really should go back to that game someday. I wonder how they translate the gameplay to the Switch. Maybe it comes with a pen? Or its all twin-stick style. More likely since they will also release it on other devices this time.
Overall this is a good thing, that much is undeniable, I just hope that as it’s now a multiplat remaster, we don’t get rough looking downscaled version of the PS4/Steam release. I understand it’s hard to prioritize Switch optimization, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m tired of jaggy 720p 30fps Switch releases when the system can do much better.
(With this said, I’m maintaining hope that it will at least match the performance and visual fidelity of the Wii U original... )
P.S. Have y’all played Captain Toad yet? I’m playing it finally after owning it for over a year, and it’s gorgeous and perfect; right up my alley. Really underrated, and we need a new batch of DLC, and while I’m dreaming, a true sequel with some much larger, and more complex worlds filled with puzzle elements... mixed in with the normal small puzzles worlds.
I have almost zero knowledge of this game but it can't be all that bad if Platinum made it.
Now is it wishful thinking to hope they'll crowdfund Nier: Automata on the Switch..?
@mlj11 That would be rad, though I’d have a tough time justifying a Switch purchase when my roommate has PS4 in the house that I can use...
@BlubberWhale My commiserations over your predicament 😊
Fortunately for me (or is that unfortunately?) my only other available platform is the PC, and N:A is reportedly quite buggy/unsupported on it. A Switch port would be a no-brainer for me!
Speaking as a pure of heart and completely unselfish person, wouldn't you like to have your very own copy of Nier? Please consider joining any potential crowdfunding efforts 😋
@mlj11 Lol, that’s exactly part of the “struggle.” I’ve never really been in this position until recently, and I’ve always taken great pleasure in owning my own games. But faced with the option of playing some amazing titles with a big graphics upgrade, or owning my own Switch copy, for my own console... its tough bro, lol.
(Then there’s the lesser factor of whether I’m buying the PS4 game, or I’m just playing his game... kinda weird buying games for his console but kinda works with different accounts... but not owning the console makes it feel... less personal, idk, I’m dumb ha.)
@BlubberWhale I feel you, man. On the flip side, you probably have access to a lot of great PS exclusives that many of us don't. Pros and cons etc.
Whatever you choose, I wish you many hours of gaming bliss ahead!
@mlj11 You’re right, as a lifelong Nintendo “fanboy,” it’s kinda fun to sample the PS library for a change. And hey thanks a lot, same to you man!
I love it that the Switch release was the first stretch goal. Remember when a game would only get ported to Wii U if the devs met their final stretch goal of about $15 million?
Watch the moment that platinum games realized their predatory scheme worked! They literally just got funded by a Chinese company, and they’re begging on Kickstarter. And the fact this is coming out in 2 months proves the game was already made, platinum just wanted fan funding. They make some good games but they’re a slimy company
@nessisonett lol. You realize a Chinese company just bought stake in them right? Literally for their independence. This was platinum just taking money they knew people would give
@jly1987 This isn’t some sort of global conspiracy. Tencent invested in Platinum. Platinum then kickstarted money to self publish. Those two events aren’t mutually exclusive.
@nessisonett I didn’t say it’s a conspiracy. I said it reeks of the awful business practices Platinum has always been a part of. They’ve long been rumored to take funds meant for one project and use it to help fund other games. They literally just got an investment and they’re asking you to pay for a game that’s FINISHED. If it wasn’t finished, it wouldn’t be coming in April. Wonderful 101 has been being worked on for some time now. They finished the game and they want outside funding and they knew that there was such a demand for this game to come to switch they could EASILY get people to give them money.
@jly1987 You’ll probably find the investment is there to recoup the money spent on development. Even so, backers are getting a copy of the game and goodies for backing. It’s hardly the end of the world.
@Rohanrocks88 it’s not a conspiracy, the point is that rather than put the game out that they already had developed. They’re trying to kickstart a game that is literally finished. They just got an investment. Platinum HAS been a dirty business for a long time. This is just another piece of that
@PlayedNSlayed I was going to comment but we are on the exact same page! This is actually the first time I have ever backed a game. Gotta have the physical copy tho. Cheers!!
I find it kinda hilarious how many people are upset that this kickstarter is so successful. It's still one of my favorite Wii U games regardless, so glad it's coming portably.
That’s awesome to hear! I’m happy for them and definitely buying this on Switch
@PlayedNSlayed It can't be for ps4 or Steam as they weren't going to release it on those without hitting the targets.
@jly1987 I did wonder if some of the 1.5 mill would go to other games development (I mean, my first reaction was surprised at how much they wanted for a ps4 port and then actually suspicious at the measly extras for 1 mill and 1.5 mill) but is there any proof they have done it before? I do realise Publishing and physicals is not cheap, though.
@kobashi100. Your comment aged well (sarcasm)
