Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Fire Emblem Engage?

Expa0

I've made it up to Chapter 8 now, how highly I rate in entirely hinges on whether or not the game does end up being beatable in the way I am playing, without utilizing the rings and the engage mechanic on Hard/Classic without using the Somliel Base.

If I make it through and the map design does stay as solid as it has for the most part been so far (post the first few tutorial maps) then I'd say we're looking at 7 or 8 and it would earn a place in my list of "good" Fire Emblem games, if not then it's a 1. I really just cannot stand the engage mechanic and hate everything it stands for and I'd rather just sell the game than play with it. Without the rings the main gameplay has been a blast, decent level of challenge, maps could use some more depth to them but it's not too bad, I like that there's no freaking pair up or forced time wasting chores to do, I like that there's a Jeigan unit in the game once again and I like that the units have actual pre-determined classes and bases again and aren't just blank slates. Break mechanic is surprisingly smart, removing some of the value from the enemy phase and making the player phase more important.

The characters, story and dialogue are embarrasingly bad and the kind of overtly wacky kiddy anime style and wibe is a big turn off, but the skip button exists so I can deal with it, music has been pretty weak for the series standard.

@AtlanteanMan
I agree with just about everything you say, Fire Emblem definitely deserves better than this, but I can't help that the base gameplay of this series is fun enough for me that I can ignore the massive turd that's sitting there right next to me (at least when I play with some house rules, the engage mechanic is just too silly for me).

It does help that I've never been one to value storylines much, they can enhance the experience but they're hardly necessary, this games' story & characters are so bad that they actually do hurt the game. but turning of the voices and skipping the cutscenes allows me to alleviate that.

The somliel, whatever, is a part of the game, yes but I've spent less than 10 minutes total in that place. Unlike 3 Houses it really isn't mandatory at all.

@FantasiaWHT
You most definitely do not need to use the base, I've been playing on Hard/Classic without even using the ring mechanic whatsoever and I've been doing just fine, only time I visited the base was to forge weapons, nothing else.

Though admittedly none of it really has any place in a SRPG to begin with, I can definitely understand why anyone would be peeved.

Re: Fire Emblem Engage - Tips And Tricks To Get You Started

Here's a classic trick that works in almost every Fire Emblem, including this one: You can use the trade command in battle to change an another units weapon around, for example you can first use a unit to attack with a more powerful Steel Lance on the player phase, and then you can have another unit trade with them but instead of switching around items between the units, you just move the desired weapon to the units top slot which makes them equip it, for example in that way you can have the unit wield a Javelin for the enemy phase which makes them ready to counterattack enemies from both up close and from range. Quite useful.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 21st)

Expa0

Well I kind of hate myself for it but despite all my incessant complaining I decided to purchase the new fire emblem game after all when I happened on it on the store shelf, I feel weak and ashamed but the prospect of there being a decently large roster of units and the game perhaps being beatable without utilizing the rings ended up being interesting enough for me to get it. I went hard classic, there's been a whole bunch of circle jerking for the dingus main character at every opportunity and it definitely feels like Fates all over again as expected. Oh well thankfully the skip button exists.

But the gameplay seems solid enough so far, of course the maps have been basically just tutorials still. Chain attacks and whatever are kind of annoying but I guess I'll deal with it. Just unlocked the base which I've been told can be mostly ignored, I'll try to figure out a way to get the freaking ring off the main character and continue on.

Kinda nice to have a good ol' Jeigan unit in the party after such a long time since Gunter in Fates was such non-character.

I figured I'll try to do it without the rings, grinding, rewind and utilizing the base, maybe I'll allow the (ingame) gatcha rings if it starts to feel impossible. If even that doesn't work I'll prolly just sell it.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Engage - Relationships Get Sidelined By A Thrilling Combat-First Focus

Expa0

Meh. I do enjoy the FE gameplay at its base, it used to be my favorite series of games for a long time and I know I'd probably get some enjoyment out this it if I just played it, skipped the cutscenes, ignored the entire ring system and turned off the voices and battle animations, but there's just so much "gringy" crap built in between the gaudy, low quality character art and the minigames that really have no place in SRPG to begin with. I would likely just get pissed off and I really don't want to give money to IS for this. There's a line for everything and this is where mine is.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 14th)

Kind of at crossroads still looking into a game I want to commit into now that I well and truly completed Final Fantasy X beating all the super bosses and all that.

I've tried Wizardry 6 but I donno if I'm feeling that all that much, I love the indepth dungeon design and style but the gameplay balancing it pretty garbage, at least for the early game I find that so few of my attacks are actually connecting.

I've been on and off playing some Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate which I nabbed from a sale on steam, have beaten both of the cinematic story campaign and have now just been unlocking the character endings in the arcade ladder and just been messing around with whatever. It's been quite good.

Re: Persona On Switch - All Games, Where To Start, Beginner's Guide, FAQs

Expa0

I enjoyed my first go through Persona 3 FES back in the day but trying to play Persona 4 right after was a massive mistake, it was then when I learned not to play too many similar kind of games in a row, still haven't played 4 to completion but I did play 5 vanilla a few years ago and it was really good.

I mean the combat in a way is kind of a poor man's SMT, which in itself is a very basic hit the weakness dum-dum type deal, but the light resource management does add some depth to it, at least until you inevitably break it... Buut the story and character interactions are the bigger focus obviously and the games do have strong art styles and great soundtracks to listen to, I'd say every single game is worth a playthrough, though I'd say the games have particularly terrible replay value and it's not secret that the calendar system does also make it feel like kind of a chore.

Re: Quiz: Which Of These Games Is On Switch?

Expa0

15/24, should be 16/24 because calling new'n tasty Abe's Oddysee is just blatantly false, I can accept the Overwatch trick question but not that one. Just like how I can't say that Resident Evil 1 is on the switch just because the Remake is in it, completely different experiences.

Re: Talking Point: After Pixel Remaster, What's Next For Final Fantasy On Switch?

Expa0

Unless they're going to somehow majorly bork it I really don't see what kind of point there'd be to port the earlier Theatrhythm games, the new one has all the same tracks and more.

I guess I'd be kinda into it if they gave the older games proper ports instead of those dumbed down pixel remasters but I doubt that's gonna happen.

Here's an interesting idea, make a remaster of Final Fantasy the 4 heroes of light, just maybe take a look at some of the aspects of it that didn't really pan out, there's a real gem of a game hidden in there held back by some monumentally bad gameplay and balance decisions.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 7th)

Expa0

I guess I decided that I hate myself so in some form of self-flagellation I set out to defeat all the super bosses in Final Fantasy X, something which I've never done before. I got all the super weapons (even the one from the terrible lightning dodging quest and the one from the mind numbing blitzball minigame) and captured of 10 every monster already, now the gargantuan grind to get my stats up and to get the armor I'm gonna need is ongoing.

Re: Atlus Is Preparing Several New Game Announcements For 2023

Expa0

Atlus has a lot to prove after the awful SMT5, and from what I've heard even people who actually liked smt5 considered Soul Hacker 2 to be bad so yeah. It's sad but Atlus has managed to lose it's good dev status in my eyes. I'm not exactly holding my breath for any of their announcements.

Re: Talking Point: What Game Do You Replay Every Year?

Expa0

I wouldn't say I replay it "Every year" but Breath of Fire 2 is definitely among some of my replayed games especially relative to how lengthy it is.

There's also the obvious Super Metroid which I might just pick up at any given time and play through in two hours.

Re: Backlog Club: Nintendo Life's Games Of Not-This-Year Awards 2022

Expa0

Finally something sensible, I totally agree that the prospect of a GOTY for a specific year is rather pointless unless you have played every game that was released on that year, it's just a popularity contest, nothing else.

When I've made my own personal "GOTY" list I always count every new game I got to experience in the year, whether it was released on 80s or this year is entirely irrelevant as long as I complete the game or at least play it enough to get a good enough feel on it then it's a fair game I think. That way every game gets their chance in the limelight.

Re: Soapbox: Sega's Greatest RPG Is 20 Years Old And Long Overdue A Remaster

Expa0

Played it at some point years ago and frankly I just didn't get what the hubbub was about at all, to me it just felt like a bog standard early PS2 era style JRPG with all the trapping including some superbly long-winded battle animations.

I remember liking the soundtrack well enough but other than that I really didn't care for it, it didn't help that the game was already gaining at price at that point so I ended up having to pay like 80 bucks for a copy.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 24th)

Expa0

I was visiting my father and he was playing Final Fantasy X. He's old (and old fashioned, even compared to myself) so he doesn't know (or care to know) how to use the computer or the internet so I had to assist him to get some of the more hidden things in the game like Anima, the Celestial Mirror, in the process I kind of wanted to play the game myself as well so I did.

Started up the game again at the start of the week and have made it up to the point where I got the airship. I donno if I feel like dealing with the post game grind or just blast right through into Sin yet but I guess we'll see.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Prince Of Persia

Expa0

I mean I like the silver colouring on the PAL box, that's the version of the game had, but by god the full art on the japanese version is glorious, it's no contest, that's some fine handrawn old school artwork.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Launches On Switch Spring 2023

Expa0

I played Final Fantasy 4 from these remasters and frankly outside of the original US SNES version it's the weakest version of the game. The game is SO easy, like the game was never hard to begin with but now you get like 4 times exp or something like that meaning you get so overleveled so quickly, you can run from battles with 100% success rate immediatedly (which I get it, people really hate random encounters these days for some reason so they want to give a way to eliminate them, but at that point why not just make it a toggle instead of making those who want to skip battles have to run over and over, and for those who do want to get the classic experience get a broken run option), map feature spoils the entire dungeon layout instead of filling it as you explore, you can press a button to hide it but it'll always show up again, no toggle for it obviously... The cutscenes are super sped up for some reason and for a game so focused on dumb "quality of life" there's not even an option to conveniently sort your inventory. The game looks nice and the remixed soundtrack is nice (though I'd like the option for the original soundtrack as well) but the complete ruined difficulty means that there really isn't much of a game to enjoy here.

Donno if the other Pixel Remasters are as braindead as this one was, but I'm not bothering to find out.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Switch Games Of The Year 2022

Expa0

Triangle Strategy is my Switch GOTY for sure, amazing strategy game that for once is more about actual strategy rather than grinding and character builds as most of these things tend to be these days.

But my true GOTY for this year has to be Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, I didn't expect this one to be as great as it was at all. I loved the setting, atmosphere and the story and in an extremely rare occurence to me I really got into the story and the characters, I actually wanted to see the characters succeed in their goals. It's a great dungeon crawler with some really cool mechanics and a big focus on resource management. Soundtrack was awesome too. Rimworld and Mad Rat Dead also get honourable mentions.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 10th)

Continuing on with Alliance Alive Remastered, reached the point where all the party members converged and I also gained a ship to move around in the overworld in meaning the game opened up in a pretty big way both in terms of party customization and exploration. Have been enjoying the game quite a bit so far in spite of the awful soundtrack.

Some Overwatch 2 on the side also, it continues to be fun to play with a friend. Maybe try to pick up Doomfist now that they buffed him and he's not terrible anymore.
