Having been playing MH since Freedom on PSP, I believe it's a combination of the experience improving over time and the challenge being a little reduced. It's less important to learn monster patterns than it used to be, and removal of (most) gathering quests, not requiring hot/cool drinks anymore, not having to buy pickaxes, bug nets and whetstones--these things streamlined the experience perhaps too much.
Hunters now have more options than ever; back in the day you didn't have hunter arts or switch skills or wirebugs or clutch claws...your option was to block, dodge or panic dive out of the way of attacks and take advantage of openings; that was pretty much it. While I loved MH's humble beginnings, I don't think I could play a game pre-Generations today, and even Pre-World is kind of a hard sell.
But while Rise may seem a bit less challenging, it's no cakewalk in Master Rank and the game remains fun to play, so I personally have no complaints. I'm glad the series' success has allowed it to come this far and I'm looking forward to what's to come. Can't wait to take on the metal Raths again.
Played both on PS3. Really enjoyed the experience, but since they are puzzle games, it's not worth it to double-dip IMO. Once you solve a puzzle, there's not much reason to go back.
In answer to the question about nostalgia for an unknown game...watching the video, I can kind of say...yeah. The music and audio of the game really ignited something within me, even though I know I've never played this before. Made me think of how I enjoyed so many arcade games as a kid, games like Burger Time and Elevator Action...
Pointless images of women aside (I like my sex appeal contextually relevant, not just thrown in games for kicks), the game looks interesting enough, but not for me.
Sounds like a must buy for me. I've always loved Mega Man games and their successors, spiritual and otherwise. I'm fine with the new character too...always thought GV was kind of a bore.
The first game I remember playing was either Skiing or Pole Position on Atari (pretty sure it was the 7800).
First game I ever owned was Pro Wrestling on the NES. My father bought it for Christmas when I was eight or so, and my older brother and I had to share it. He got Mike Tyson's Punch Out, I got Pro Wrestling, but neither of those games held my attention when I got what I consider my first true video game: The Legend of Zelda. It was gifted to me that same year and it was what made me fall in love with gaming.
Here's hoping you can have a female avatar...would be nice to see that reflected in the trailer above too, haha.
On a serious note, I am another who found Warframe just too much to keep up with, but the game wasn't fundamentally bad. It was actually beautiful and fun for a while even on Switch. So I'm intrigued to see what these folks have up their sleeves.
This can only be a good thing so even prudish folks who want to experience the action can do it with no worries. Although, Bayo doesn't really go all that far with the nudity anyway...
Sunbreak made me put aside my Steam Deck (I know MHRise + Sunbreak is on Steam but I'd already pumped hundreds of hours into the Switch version and I hunt with friends online). It's addictive as all heck. I've only gotten to MR3 so far but I'm loving the new additions. I'm especially happy with the weapon changes...most notably, they brought back my beloved Crouching (Siege) fire for HBG. It's heavily nerfed for sure with an overheat mechanic, but it makes a welcome addition to the arsenal and, combined with charged shots, it makes HBG the best its ever been. Rocking that Hermitaur armor also turns HBG into a walking tank that almost can't be staggered. It's so much fun.
I can't wait to get to the new endgame. I'm looking forward to fighting old favorites Astalos and Seregios, and seeing what awaits.
I agree with the complaint that Sunbreak opening with MR versions of the same early game monsters is kind of lame. Other than Daimyo Hermitaur and a subspecies of Bishaten, it's like early game all over again (albeit with slightly heavier hitting, more aggressive versions of the early game monsters). But as I love MonHun, I know things will get better and I'll live with it.
The companion hunts are more interesting than I thought. I put a monster to sleep and the AI partner went ahead and laid down extra barrel bombs next to mine, and ran off at one point to Wyvern Ride another monster into the fray on her own. It was almost like playing with a human. Still, I feel like they're more of a superfluous addition.
And I'm so grateful Rampages are a thing of the past.
There's not much to complain about with Sunbreak to be honest, especially if Capcom continues the trend of adding more monsters and content over time.
The art is very realistic and highly detailed, but it looks less like a woman in a suit and more like a robot with a woman's face. It doesn't seem to compensate for the idea that it's a person (who should be reasonably built and strong) wearing actual armor.
I was plotting on getting these for Switch just to have them even though I already have them both on Steam and GOG through Humble Bundles and what not...but the shoddy performance means I'm just going to play them on my Steam Deck.
I never liked the US cover. Almost made me pass the game over if I hadn't read about it in Nintendo Power when it first came out. I didn't know what the heck I was looking at, at first.
To think that game would become my favorite game of all time.
Even though I kind of outgrew my interest in TMNT, this sounds like an incredible beat-em-up in its own right, license or no. I adored Scott Pilgrim enough to double dip on it, so this sounds like it needs to be in my library, especially with the Story Mode.
Can't get enough of these kinds of games as far as gameplay goes. I would like to see more that have this intense gameplay and don't need to go the grimdark/gory route all the time though.
That being said, if it plays as good as it looks it'll likely be an insta-buy for me.
Iceborne was substantial enough to be worth the price. I'm expecting Sunbreak to be no different. I've come to accept that lower-difficulty Monster Hunter is just how it's going to be. The game is still fun, carts still happen (not to me haha) and grinding to create and upgrade gear is still as enjoyable as ever. I've already preordered the DLC so it's just a waiting game now.
I just hope Sunbreak heavily downplays (or even better; eliminates) Rampage quests.
When I'm not hunting with my son and some close friends, I too like to just jump in and do random join requests with other hunters, often with quests I'm way overpowered for (my Hunter is nearly HR200 wearing full Valstrax armor) just for the fun of it.
The most toxicity I ever experienced throughout the series was the occasional joker who would attack others while they were trying to carve the monster after the hunt. Haven't seen that happen in Rise but it used to be so prevalent that the series actually added an armor skill to prevent it--Flinch Free.
But that's a rare occurrence and I haven't seen it at all during my time with Rise.
Saw a similar scam where some company was claiming to have a whole crapload of PS5s that were supposed to be sold in Russia but the orders were canceled due to the war, so of course the PS5s were like 90% off. Comments ranting about how amazing the deal was were all over the post. It's just foul.
Sonic Blast Man 2 and Peace Keepers are the best not-Final Fight brawlers on SNES. They could have kept Rival Turf in the vault--it wasn't good even for its time.
@Ear_wiG I was thinking the same thing about the lack of party members. The battle screen seems to have a ton of negative space at the bottom that implied there would be some companions there...but no dice. I thought that was odd.
DD is incredible. It's pawn system beats any other game that has AI companions, the world is large but not too large, the combat is engaging and best of all, it's not scared to let you enjoy chainmail bikini armor and thongs if you're into that sort of thing. Elden Ring could learn a thing or two, haha.
I could probably stand to be a bit more open minded. Certainly the Switch has tons of games that I really believed I wanted at the time because of the genre, the publisher or just because it has a nice retro feel, but the sheer number of games I possess versus the number I finish, or even play, is kind of unbalanced. Maybe instead of thinking I just need to have the next Metroidvania or JRPG, I could try...something in a tower defense or visual novel vein...
Yeah, when you have to hit an enemy 10 or 20 times to defeat it and it doesn't react at all to the hits, things don't feel quite right. That camera shake is irritating too.
Reading the comments makes me wonder if anyone knew player two could control Tails in the original Sonic 2's single player mode, bonus stages and all. Made getting the Chaos Emeralds much easier back in the day.
FFF was a surprise gem that I spent many hours playing on PS3 and the expansion on PS4. But rehashing the story in SRPG format instead of just making a sequel or expanding the universe somehow seems like a missed opportunity...borderline lazy.
I liked the game but it was just too hard for me, after the second stage, I couldn't keep up. Maybe I'm just old...Smash Bros. makes my hands cramp up too.
I was interested in this game but just watching gameplay, it made me think that the rhythm and shooting elements would clash. If only the developers thought to include the option to play without the rhythm elements, just keeping the music theme as background scenery. Kind of like how Unsighted has this major time element in which major characters can die, but you can just turn it off and play the game like a standard Zelda-ish adventure if you want.
That being said, not a bad score, and I like the concept and character designs. Maybe I'll grab Soundfall on sale later.
I'm still waiting for my Steam Deck preorder. I'm happy with my Switch and I don't see a Steam Deck compelling me to sell the device. For me, the SD is more like a novelty, but one that I'd like to have just because it exists. I want to see what it's like. I can afford it. It may not be the best handheld gaming experience but I feel like it would just be neat to have. And conveniently, I have fairly large hands, and thanks to Humble Bundles and the like, plenty of Steam games I never got around to playing because I prefer gaming on the go.
I had some fun with this on Steam for a while, but stopped playing it. I don't think I'll have any problem picking it up for Switch if the price is right.
The review made it sound better than a five. Gonna have to check it out for myself. The Cons don't sound that bad and the Joys seem like they might be better than the review lets on.
The game looks great and all, and I'll likely get it when the time comes, but...I would really like it if developers move away from what essentially boils down to Symphony of the Night palette swaps with the visuals and animations.
I'm all for titillating artwork...I personally fancied myself a 'pinup artist' once upon a time and I enjoy such artwork when it's done well. But why can't some effort be made to put an actual good game under all the so-called fanservice? Many complaints about "fanservice games" would crumble if the game were actually good, if some effort were made to make the game entertaining, fun, deep, challenging instead of assuming that digital boobs are all it takes to make sales.

Re: Review: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 - An RPG Classic That Time Hasn't Been Too Kind To
I liked this back in the day, but when I saw it on the eShop, I thought, "imagine paying $30 for this when Diablo 3 exists".
Not every game that was well received back in the day deserves a re-release.
