If you saw a Nintendo Switch selling for just $4, you might assume that Doug Bowser had lost his mind, before buying every single one available — but perhaps unsurprisingly, in the case of unlucky South Africans seeing the deal on Facebook, it's naught but a scam.
According to a report by Cape Town Etc., a post is circulating on social media site Facebook claiming to have Nintendo Switches for sale for 60 Rand, which is roughly $3.80 (£3).
The scam is made more convincing by the scammers posing as large online retailer Takealot, who issued a checklist in December to ensure that people don't fall for the con:
⛔️ We do not request payment to enter into a competition
⛔️ We do not charge for the delivery of prizes
⛔️ You will never have to pay to unlock deals

The massively-discounted Switch was posted on the Electronic Products group, saying that the shop was "liquidating [their] inventory in the USA".
The scam reportedly works by signing users up for multiple small payments after taking their card details.

At that price, it was obviously a scam. But sadly, it does call some attention to the fact that videogames are still very much luxury items in many parts of the world, mostly due to publishers being unwilling/unable to adjust their prices in those markets to make up for the exchange rate and any local taxes.
Had the exact same ad making the rounds in Belgium a while ago! It's pretty much the same ad, just with a different flag and currency. They were pretty thorough in their scheme too, having people put fake comments so that it'd look as if they actually got a switch. Any comment trying to call them out was deleted within seconds too. Hope it stops soon, I got sick of them flooding my sight while scrolling around.
I mean, it was 4 bucks and nintendo would never sell anything for that low let alone there own console.
Idk how anyone would fall for this anyway. Given the current Climate of things as in the amount of scams going around anyway I don't see how you would fall for it unless you've been living under a rock this whole time.
As I remembered, a lot of African country have very high inflation rate so to buy a loaf of small bread, you have to pay $ 1,000,000 in country like Zimbabwe.
Whenever I see a hotukdeal on Switch games for a Tesco in the middle of nowhere, you know I'll be in my car driving to every Tesco nearby.
I'd probably go venturing if I saw this.
If only, If only.
Gas is more expensive...
Idunno.. looks legit to me
I feel like they could be a lot more convincing by saying the same thing but at a price like 200$ or $150 and they’d probably get more money
The Nigerian Prince is at it again!!
Sounds like that scam that Nintendo tried recently with their online service where you have to "rent" games buy paying them more........oh wait, that's rea!?!
😜
I'm obviously kidding.......wish Nintendo was.😁
Ok I'll stop now.
@Chocobo_Shepherd You know what, when the son of the deposed king of Nigeria emails you directly, asking for help, you help! His father ran the freaking country! Ok?
❌️It's not a scam. I was ASSURED it was legit so I bought a few which I have in front of me
opens 📦
"...Oh!"
It's silly most of the comments are saying this due to the exchange rate when this same scam exists in first world countries like Australia ($4 Kmart) just like the image.
"Remember Koopalings, if it seems too good to be true, bathe the whole deal in lava and kidnap the nearest princess!"
~King Bowser, probably
Saw a similar scam where some company was claiming to have a whole crapload of PS5s that were supposed to be sold in Russia but the orders were canceled due to the war, so of course the PS5s were like 90% off. Comments ranting about how amazing the deal was were all over the post. It's just foul.
Dirty rotten scammers, giving good resellers like me, a bad name. Now, my ps5s for $10 is there real deal, I just need your ssn, your pet dog, a lamb gyro, and a ps5 first, is the real deal.
Damn.. and my OLED without a dock cost me $420. Guess I should have waited, lol
There are some really classy people out there
Not to be mean, but if you fall for this you should have your bank card taken away, because you clearly are not ready to have one. It boggles my mind that people fall for these things. Like, in what universe is someone going to be selling Switches for that amount of money?
OH MY GOSH! WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE 4 DOLLAR SWITCHS ARE A SCAM? I THOUGHT THEY WERE ENTIRELY LEGIT! You mean to tell me that this was a fake retailer because theres no way any retailer could afford to sell switches at the price! WOW unbelievable.
@Anti-Matter It costs about 700 ZWD to buy a loaf of bread, which is roughly $2 USD. The average wage in Zimbabwe is 217,000 ZWD a month.
This is a common scam here, for other stuff to kettles microwaves, all that stuff.
Edit: a loaf of Bread is about R17 if you interested, Minimum wage is R23.19 a hour
@BrazillianCara Um, hate to break it to you, but video games are luxuries everywhere in the world.
And let's be quite honest here, you have to be incredibly... um... let's say naive, to see something like this and fail to wonder if maybe it's too good to ever be true.
If you live in a part of the world with such minimal income (As noted in several posts before me), there should be greater priorities than video games, anyway.
You can even tell, that the picture was originally taken in a German shop, based on the big USK logo on Pikmin 3/ Mario 3D World and some German text beneath the takealot logo.
99,9% discount? Oh, right, because Switch costs 4000 dollars.
Scammers are disgusting and all but everyone who thinks they'll actually get a Switch for 4$ is out of their mind
I've seen the exact same scam on Facebook in France.
Any affiliate links to this NL? Oh wait, you only do that for stores with the highest prices.
That’s tough, scams come up all the time. Living in a world with internet makes it so much easier now. Something like this should scream scam to everybody, but I can still see where others would fall for this.
Greed on both sides makes this possible. Consumers want the best products for little cost and scammers want the most money for little work.
@BrazillianCara They can't really, because everyone would just import them from really cheap countries in bulk.
People believe these cons because (most) scams are based on the victims' greed. Greedy people (even poor people can be greedy) think they'll get something no one/few else can, and get suckered. Almost every scam is based on the same principle, just a different version. Research the sale of the Eiffel Tower and the London Bridge; sold by a con artist to several people at the same time.
Had this in the UK. They post fake responses saying "it's real I got my switch" don't fall for it people.
@Anti-Matter South Africa has lower inflation than America. So the $1000 000 bread would be a US reality before it could become a SA reality. America, bigger is better right?
If you're stupid enough to believe that anyone on this planet would sell a brand new Switch for $4, you deserve to get scammed. They should be thanking their lucky stars it was just $4.
