Developer and publisher Inti Creates, known for its work on games such as Mega Man Zero, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and the Castlevania-inspired Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, has announced that it is working on a brand new 2D action platformer that looks like a beautiful mash up of all three.
Grim Guardians: Demon Purge takes the fast paced shooting mechanics of Mega Man and blends it with the close-quarters melee combat seen in classic Castlevania titles. It stars two demon hunters - Shinobu and Maya - who must infiltrate a dangerous castle that now stands in place of their former school. You'll be able to switch between the two characters on the fly to utilise their unique skills, or you can team up with a friend for two-player co-op gameplay.
Here's an official breakdown of the game from Inti Creates:
Grim Guardians centers around two demon hunters who return to their school after a mission only to find a demonic castle where it once stood. Players control both of the demon hunting sisters in this 2D side-scrolling action game. Players must master each of the sisters’ unique abilities and attributes to overcome the challenging stages with bosses awaiting their arrival. They’ll also be able to find new routes through each stage using the 2 characters’ abilities, keeping play throughs fresh.
Other features include 2-player co-op with special actions, extensive difficulty options with the “Style System,” unique changes on repeat plays, and most importantly the quality and challenge players have come to expect from Inti Creates titles, this time with a new gothic horror aesthetic.
Despite the game being playable for attendees at the indie game show 'BitSummit X-Roads' in Kyoto this weekend, it nevertheless sounds like Grim Guardians is in early development, so a release date is likely still a ways off. If this early glimpse is anything to go by, however, it looks like the game may well prove to be another hit for Inti Creates!
What do you think of Grim Guardians? Will you be adding it to your collection when it eventually launches? let us know!

1 minute in and I already know this game is my jam, I think I'll buy it both on my switch and xbox 😃
I really wish there's cross-save for this game.
I think it’s nice that they didn’t try to up sell it too hard in that trailer, feels nice and legit. Looks like good fun too, and the two player mode sold me. That’s such a banger idea!
they're sisters? they look nothing alike lol xD anime trope i see, but i love they're outfits just not into the simplistic style for the hair, and face - it's eh, seen it before too many times so it's okay.
the gameplay looks fine not something i would get super interested in, the main story what we got so far is quite great, interesting to see some demon hunting story :3. i love the stages art <3 very pretty.
Love Castlevania, Mega Man, and Inti Creates. I definitely feel like the target demographic! 😲
This is a Gal*Gun spin-off by the way. Shinobu and Maya Kamizono are characters from Gal*Gun: Double Peace
Looks cool, but that voice acting is loud and annoying, the characters talk way too much.
That origami crane very cool!
Loved Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 1 & 2 and this looks similar.
@Tourtus I agree, to much talking. The sounds they make when jumping is too much.
I mean, I’m sold. I love the art and pixels and love the theme. Inti is in my top 3 developers!
Maya from Gal Gun Double Peace was enough to sell this to me
Those are just the characters from Gal*Gun in a Castlevania game.
It looks like every other inti game. A well made, if unremarkable 16 bit throwback.
I like both Gal*Gun Double Peace and Castlevania. This is up my alley.
The characters look and play exactly like X and Zero from the Megaman X series. Colors and everything.
Bye bye Metroidvania, hello MEGAVANIA!
It looks interesting, but I am disappointed that it isn't a Metroidvania. I would sooo love another game like Symphony of the Night.
@chipia ArtPlay is working on a sequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night; it's likely still a ways off yet, but with that and Hollow Knight: Silksong on the horizon, you should be covered.
I'm all for this! Love Inti Creates, the Curse of the Moon games were phenomenal and bite size. 3-4 hours for this type of game is perfect because it invites replayability.
Great - I kinda have all the Inti Creates games on my Switch - they live to serve my taste
Looks awesome! Can't go wrong with Inti creates! Now i just need to get caught up on the Azure striker gunvolt games. I only ever played the first one.
Interesting that you didn’t mention Mighty No. 9 in your list of Inti Creates games at the start of the article. I still have very mixed feelings about Inti Creates after that whole mess.
Now don't you DARE come up with a new term for this like "Megalovania" or something stupid just because it has weaponry like in Megaman. Metroidvania can still apply and that term is bad enogh as it is.
@admeister That was mostly a joint effort with Comcept, so Inti Creates can't be entirely blamed for that dumpster fire.
Love the look of this. Two of my favorite franchises (dormant for too long, Capcom and Konami) melded together by Inti Creates. Practically love anything Inti Creates… creates. They’re practically an 8/10, 9/10 tier game machine. Looking forward to more, as I’m sure this will be solid.
Please tell me that voice acting can be switched off
I really like the art style and the SOTN look. But I don't like the: we aw, oo and ha with every jump. And we have to jump a lot.
@chipia Well to be fair to Konami they did make 6 follow ups to Castlevania Symphony of the Night: 3 games on Gameboy and 3 on the DS. They gave us the Gameboy Collection, hopefully, we get the DS trilogy as well.
@thinkhector But the last SotN-Follow-up was from 2008! I mean, we need more NEW games in that style : -)
Ah, a Megavania. Looks pretty good and IntiCreates does have a lot of great games.
Looking forward to this one.
@chipia Konami doesn't make games anymore. I mean even Nintendo doesn't make all of their games in house. I wish Konami would just hire someone else to make the games for them.
I will follow Inti-Creates forever, and this game is all the way my jam. Cannot wait.
@thinkhector Yeah, that's why I hoped that other Developers would make games in a similar style. The only major ones we have so far are Bloodstained and maybe Hollow Knight, although I skipped the former as the switch version has apparently poor performance.
@chipia Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been fixed on the Switch. (Although in this case I was talking about Curse of the Moon since it has similar art style to this game.)
You had me at inti creates
Love Inti Creates!! This game looks amazing!
Anyone who hasn't played Dragon Marked For Death should check it out, it's Mega Man meets Monster Hunter (kind of)
JONATHAN!!
CHARLOTTE!!
Ahem, this take on Portrait of Ruin 2 has my interest.
@thinkhector Is Bloodstained really fixed? I know that there were updates, but I understood that there are still FPS drops, Input lag and crashes, especially in the two towers.
Don't you guys make noises when you jump? I do. If it's a really big jump, I like to let out a "COWABUNGA!!!". (Usually followed by a loud crash and an "OOYAH!!!").
Why is Maya's pixel hair green, but her anime hair is black??
Looks really nice so far.
I'm gonna buy (a physical copy of) this game so hard.
Inti Creates can do no wrong.
Simply lovely! I wish it was a later "metroidvania" as opposed to stages but I will have it, no questions
A combo made in heaven, Inti creates is on fire.
That looks like a day 1 from me.
Inti is a very “by the numbers” kind of developer, so I find myself in familiar territory when I play their games.
I've Never played a Mega Man or a Castlevania game, but i have played Metroid Dread and Dex though, and i am looking for more games that are similar to those two. this is definitely something that i will check out once it has a release date.
More like a Gunvolt + Castlevania combo
@dojmin Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this is also a Gal Gun spin off XD
Finally we'll see those two doing their job properly without getting stuck in a window or captured by some tentacle...maybe X3c
I needed this in my life yesterday. Portrait of Ruin is one of my favorite games of all time. I will gladly take a spiritual successor. Heck I’ll buy it multiple times over
I am curious. Not much of a castlevania fan but part of that has to do with character roster so perhaps this will be fun. I’m trying to revisit genres I normally don’t play.
sold!! day one, if not earlier, gimme, give it to me. NOW. I@M NOT JOKING!!!
Didn't they have a similar 2 player gimmick on one of the DS games? I think it was Order of Eclasia. This looks interesting, but it's not really grabbing me.
It looks really awesome and kind of like portrait of ruin.
It seems like a shame though that they didn't make it Co-Op that's why I'm glad that I'm making metroidvania that's Co-Op where you play as a demon and a knight and can enter into Co-Op at any point
@Tempestryke you're thinking of Portrait of Ruin, one of the greatest games on DS IMO.
This game looks like an insta-buy for me.
I've always like Inti Creates when I've played their stuff. This looks cool. I like seeing them bring back concepts from Portrait of Ruin. I also liked how the trailer was straightforward with lots of gameplay. Also, I didn't see any screen shake that I can recall, so that's wonderful. I liked the origami platform in one part of the video. I agree that the characters are way too chatty, and I do hope they provide some options for that or that the game can be modded. I've always had issues with too much use of voice samples in games. It's definitely a thing where I agree that less is more. It reminds me of Giga Wing 2. I don't know if it was a regional thing or if it was optional, but having the pilots scream out their special attacks over and over made that quite tiresome. Still, I like a lot of what I see here.
@NeonPizza think they added a retro mide to SotN but yeah, I'm all for a 3rd game too!
Pretty cool! Very cool! I mean I enjoy drawing manga characters and my own fan mangas and it seems like a good game. I won't be playing it though because I play a different kinds of spooky games like Disgaea and it fits me such fine.
INTI creates can do no wrong it appears... this looks and sounds incredible!! I'm all over this day one baby cakes!!!!!!
Neat idea, but the attacks need morrrrrrre effort. That machine gun is cheap. And counting that out , needs more variety of attacks.
@Dualmask Thanks
I WANT THIS! JUST! ... GIMME IT!
