Warframe developer Digital Extremes announced has announced its new action MMO Soulframe at TennoCon 2022.
It's described as a free-to-play sister title of Warframe that draws inspiration from various works such as The NeverEnding Story (1984), and Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's projects like Princess Mononoke (1997) - highlighting a collision between industry and nature.
Creative director Geoff Crookes added some extra insight:
“The conceit [in ‘Soulframe’] is that the world itself is a little angry about what’s been done to it, and the grounds underneath tend to shift throughout the day. So there’s going to be proceduralism within the cave networks and crevasses and so on underneath the world.”
Instead of sci-fi, the game is made up of fantasy themes - with cooperative player-vs-environment combat, and procedurally generated environments. And rather than shooting, the focus here is melee combat - so expect "a lot more slow and heavy" engagements.
There's no release date or platforms announced just yet, but if you do like the look of this new project, you can register for email updates on the official game website. What do you think of this new MMO reveal by Digital Extremes? Leave a comment down below.

I never played warframe, however, this does peak my interest, and it’s free so no harm and giving it a shot.
I could see myself jumping into this from the onset. Really tried to get into Warframe, but it's just too dense at this point for me.
Oh boy this is gonna eat up whatever’s left of my storage on my switch...
Warframe is fantastic, even just for some casual fun. This will be worth keeping an eye on.
Is DE just going to name all their games with frame at the end?
....Everything is inspired by Ghibli films at this point.
With all the weird and bad decisions DE made over the years with Warframe, they're really trying hard right now to lure back their lost playerbase. Warframe was one of the "best free-to-play" games back then and I really enjoyed my time with it. Now it's just riddled with nonsensical or straight-up bad content. Hopefully their new "frame" game gives a lot back to the players. I'm gonna keep an eye on this one.
I had fun with Warframe, but I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing at a certain point. I got to where I had a dog, a personal clan base, and was running through obstacle courses to get some kind of limited resource and wandering around the open areas aimlessly before I gave up. Maybe if I get in on this one early, I'll be able to keep up with it better.
If they can make it LESS complicated than warframe maybe I’ll bite. Just couldn’t get into warframe too much going on for me.
Soulframe has a nice, cool sounding ring to it.
NINJA APPROVED
official website doesn't work it's just a black screen
Am pretty psyched for this. Hope it hits the Switch 2! ; )
So we have a naked King Arthur that pulls the sword from the stone with Jedi powers with a little Disney influence.
What can go wrong, except the free to play payment plan?
@iLikeUrAttitude
It's a pretty smart marketing tactic.
Monolith Soft does pretty much the same: Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade.
Looks good so far! Keeping an eye on it, Warframe was really good.
I was expecting something more “Ghibli” when I watched the trailer, but after reading that they specified Princess Mononoke (a unique Ghibli title) and Neverending Story, I can see some of that in there but clearly it’s a unique game of their own talent and making.
In some ways I think drawing Ghibli comparisons (and yeah, I know it makes news stories) doesn’t always help with the expectations of the audience.
Anyways, the game has piqued my interest.
Warframe is amazing on ots own.
This game peaked my interest so yeah i send my email to keep me posted.
If its as great or even better than warframe hell yeah.
And for free.
Personally I would much rather have Dark Sector 2 starring Hayden Tenno.
To me, Warframe has such an intricate customization/progression system hampered by simplistic and redundant gameplay. I also don’t prefer looter shooters. I might give this new game a shot because I prefer melee over shooting, but I would hope the hub world is more streamlined than Warframe.
As warframe player from more than few years ago an older
Wframe player: I'm interested enough to give this free to play game a try.
I can’t wait. I love Warframe and still login frequently for my dailies. It’ll be nice to jump in from day one on this instead of joining late in the cycle.
Such a long boring trailer!
Here's hoping you can have a female avatar...would be nice to see that reflected in the trailer above too, haha.
On a serious note, I am another who found Warframe just too much to keep up with, but the game wasn't fundamentally bad. It was actually beautiful and fun for a while even on Switch. So I'm intrigued to see what these folks have up their sleeves.
But is it for Switch?? That's what I want to know
official website still doesn't work
love the feel and look of this ... shame its an mmo
This sounds more my speed. I still loathe mmos but I can’t argue with free.
@Grail_Quest the knight that smacks the naked guy in the face? She looked very female to me…also I don’t think she is the protag. Now if you meant the naked man who appears to be the protag I think he should like like a dude since he is one.
My only hope is that they take accessibility into consideration because people coming in to warframe now have an insane amount of things they have to work towards to get level with everybody else. They need to design their end game structure so that it's friendly to new players.
@Joeynator3000 Yeah this one’s stretching it quite a bit.
days later and the official website is still broken oof
I tried the official website again today but it still doesn't work and I turned off every extension in my browser still doesn't work so that means it's not just me 🤷♀
Viewing the page source shows that stuff should be there but the site is just black
