While I could see Nintendo stopping support for 3DS, I could see 3DS as still a good place for indies to get started in. It may be hard since most of the attention is on Switch these days, but 3DS still has a good install base, so if you release a quality indie game on the cheap, and advertise the heck out of it, could potentially get some decent success
I would think both this developer AND Microsoft should get in trouble for this, does MS have no quality control / content inspection over what goes on their website? Sure if it wasn't Mario Bros and some unknown entity they could be excused, but it's MARIO BROS. One look should tell you it's copyright infringement and should not have been let onto the MS store
Love the art style I've seen of this game so far. It's not usually my type of game, but I'll have to look it up on eshop sometime and add it to the watchlist
I'm stoked that directional air dodging is back, and that the online allows for more options (it'd be fantastic to play Stock and Stamina online, and set my preferences as the regular option). The GSP to determine matching sounds like a great idea!
Oh, and I'm hoping now that it's on the Switch, I'll be able to random encounter people to 1v1 Smash with. Settle it in SMASH!
This seems like great news for Pokemon Let's Go, as far as I'm aware it wasn't actually on sale (per the price, no discount), so that's good per the numbers and profit
Pre-ordered the game day 1. Wasn't sure what I'd think of the catching mechanic, but I think it moves the series down a better path by removing the monotony of fighting to weaken pokemon before catching it, and replacing it with something different/new/interesting. Having pokemon in the overworld is nice, a lot better than randomly trying to encounter what you want, especially if your goal is shinies.
I thought the game would be too easy, and there are some OP moves Eevee can learn, but the game has some difficulty still in it (at least, I can't charge through it all with just my high stat Eevee without pokecenter stopping).
The changes to TMs and HMs are nice. The TM change may be a bit OP, but it encourages me to actually use and experiment with them.
Putting the focus on catching (and benefitting the user with exp with it) is actually an ingenious idea. Removes more of the grind, and encourages you to actually catch 'mon and several of them. Allows me to evolve several more pokemon, and again, experiment with different ones.
The RNG is not very good, even increased shiny chances seem to be too small, and making the user have to get catch combo 31x prior to having a decent shot of good IV pokemon is tedious. It's nice that the option to get a good IV pokemon is much more available, and not too too hard to attain, but ....do I want to put that much work into getting a good/competitively decent version of all the pokemon? ...No, nor do I have the time for it.
The master trainer idea is decent (haven't gotten there yet), but seems tedious for pokemon like caterpie/metapod, who can't learn any new moves. It'd be a total waste of time to try to level them up to try to get the title, is what I assume it will be like. Again, haven't gotten there quite yet. I know for online battles they can do the things of force/leveling the pokemon to all be at level 50, that would be a much better way to battle master trainers. Then you don't have to grind out levels, and it's all about the IV's and moveset of the pokemon. It'd be a billion times better if they did this, but based on what I know, it's not this way, but rather requires the indiv pokemon to fight at their given level (way too grindy). So it seems the idea was there, but not quite the execution.
All said, I'm at Celadon City, and if anything the game is super pretty. Loving the way everything looks, and the gyms are beautiful to see for the first time as I encounter them in game (I've been avoiding spoilers). The music is grand, the classic battle theme is the best! I'm hoping they expand on the ideas here in this game, perhaps as a separate series so as not to peeve off the competitive fans. And instead make leveling easier, shiny encounters much more reasonable, etc. For me, it's all about catching the pokemon, and experimenting with teams in battle. Classic pokemon is too grindy to experiment and to try to make a number of pokemon viable, it's more like choosing a select 6-10 pokemon and then keeping them bc you've already invested too much time/TM's in them. This Let's Go approach is much more suited to experimentation and creating more varied 'mon, to get to what we all want, more competitive battles, but being able to switch up the 'mon to keep the strategy more varied. An unfortunate general weakness of pokemon is that legendaries are too good stat-wise compared to everyone else, such that everyone ends up using the same few pokemon. Making more pokemon viable is the way to keep longevity and interest fresh, I'd say
Off the top of my head, I'd like to see games like Trog, Bomberman II, Battletoads, Bionic Commando, Tetris (the classic had the nice music)
Unlikely to happen as they'll probably not get the rights, and offering it for ~free would probably eat into Puyo Puyo Tetris and Bomberman R sales. That's where Virtual Console would be additionally more useful, as they may not offer it for free, but at a cheaper entry price relative to buying the later entries
I can see why they'd make the main controls one joycon only, and no pro controller (as that may 'feel' weird per motion control catching). Though, a slight bump / motion upward could work. It's not very pokeball-throwy, but it'd be nice to have the option just to change up the repetition that will occur from catching pokemon all the time (though I personally think it'll still be way better than random battling all the time as is the norm).
On further review, though, I do think it's odd/dumb that they don't have the option to use two joycon as a control scheme. Not making it required, but to have the option. Gamers are used to moving the character with the left hand, so it seems weird not to be able to use two joycon for that, it'd help reduce stress from only using one hand. Or is it that you walk around with the single joycon in horizontal mode? Even then I'd say you lose the flexibility/ ease of being able to keep your hands relaxed/separate (per use of 2 joycon instead of one).
It's dumb that that isn't a potential option, fingers crossed it gets patched in, it'd make the game better...though I doubt it would happen.
@GameKill yeah, it isn't required to play Pokemon Go to enjoy the game. If you do have Pokemon Go, I believe it just means you can transfer some pokemon back and forth.
The still shot looked worrisome, but it all looks a lot better in motion. The voice acting for pikachu helps a lot. The whole look of the pokemon is different, and maybe furrier than I expected. It hsimultaneously looks good but also a bit weird/jarring in real life. If anything it's standoutish/unique.
I think overall the movie will be an interesting watch, though, so that's a win, especially for a first forray into live action Nintendo video game movie (at least, it's been awhile).
Wish they did something a bit more creative with the Isabelle amiibo. She looks good, but not too much different from the other 2 of her amiibo. Should've done a more unique pose or whatnot
Switch is a great platform for indies, and I'm glad a number of them have found success there as well. I have Steam, but I'm not much motivated to search through it to find good games, and from there I wish I had a standardized controller to play with, and wish I didn't have to be tied to the computer to play it
I remember having a purple tamagotchi when I was younger. It was a fun little novelty, and I much enjoyed it as a kid.
Nowadays...hm, I think kids would still enjoy it, myself as an adult probably less so , unless it had fitness themes built into it, aka a step counter with pet items/accessories you could buy with it. Not that I'm super active, but I'd want a Quality of Life factor as part of it.
Hmm...that's a lot further out than I thought it's be, if they dilly dally too long people will lose interest. I'm all for more games, but I do think it'd be wise if Nintendo prioritized some of their other venues (theme park, movies, Quality of Life (unknown if that's still a thing), amiibo). Though I guess they are finding success with and starting to branch out more in mobile.
@Mallow Probably true...which is why it was wise to not release VC right away, let indies find success and want to dev for Switch.
That said, I still very much want VC, and think it would be a huge waste of potential value for consumer and $ for ninty/publishers not to release it on Switch at some point in time. Here's hoping.
Review is giving me second thoughts about this. I tried Bastion but couldn't get into it. The setting here ~seems more interesting, though it sounds a bit repetitive, so it'd all boil down to how good the battle system / customization is. Will have to check out some gameplay vids
Not the biggest dragon quest or minecraft fan, but the combination of the two seems interesting. Multiplayer on building games seems fun if you have a good group, could be a good way to build worlds faster (as long as you're not too picky on 'how' it should all be build up)
Interesting, I made an account and put up a mix of games I own and games I'd be interested in trying out (in case someone else locally is interested in meeting up who has them). Like all online to real life ventures, safety first, want to make sure the other person is who they say they are prior. Thankfully with the Switch being portable, could go meet somewhere like a local fast food restaurant for it.
To be fair, there is more value than just trading the same thing for itself. As long as your used system is in workable condition (else you cheat gamestop and future owner of the system), trading for a new system means you 'remove' or 'trade in' any wear and tear on the old system and joycons for a new aka unused system. Or if you're really picky about scratches and you happened to ding your system/controller, and if Gamestop doesn't mind and still accepts it, then you 'trade' that visual defect, so there is some extra value to be gained.
You'll probably lose all your save data, and you lose some extra money to make the transaction. But it's still part of the equation, most people won't find these extra small bits worth the trade, but some may find it worthwhile.
The latest Atelier entries have done a good job with the character design and costumes, making them cute/elaborate/sexy, without having to resort to showing copious amounts of skin. Very nice!
The games themselves are an interesting, niche, a lot of questing, and specializing in the collecting of materials then some unique crafting/alchemy system. The crafting is great and fun to experiment with, character design is good and the graphics look great and colorful, being a detailed cel shaded look. They can get pretty repetitive, within the own game, and particularly if you try many of the Atelier games at once, as they tend to use the same formula and release a lot of their games pretty often (annual-ish?).
I personally tried all but Rorona of the first 6 games (Rorona to Shallie), of them I'd say Totori (good chars, but it's not very refined, it helps if you already know the formula as some important Quality of Life item descriptions are unclear, unsure if they improved or made an enhanced version) and Ayesha are the best of the first 6 games. Meruru and 'Escha and Logy' are good half step enhancements, but I like the overall game / cast of chars better in Totori/Ayesha.
Mana Khemia, if they ever release it on Nintendo, is the best of their genre of collect/alchemy game I've seen them make so far, great story, setting, voice acting, and cast of characters.
Metroid Prime is more niche, I could see the new mainline Fire Emblem game moving Switch units with it's high popularity from Fire Emblem Heroes
I feel like the new Yoshi game has potential to sway some people / move some more units. It looks insanely creative and cutesy, but also feels like a good / casual co-op you could leisurely enjoy with anyone
I know there is some controversy concerning Pokemon Let's Go, unsure how many casual Go players would convert to owning a system for it, and hardcore fans have mixed reactions. I'm kind of mixed, but would consider it, maybe in a sale, since the original two games are among my fav pokemon games. Yeah, it feels a bit dumbed down, but with being busy with work and all, taking some of the tedium out of the game has potential to refresh the formula and make it overall more enjoyable (which imo, it sorely could use some refreshing). It may be a shorter venture overall because of it, but I'd prefer a short, quality game over a game with x number of hours of gametime but whose extra time is monotonous/grindy. Since you can import pokemon from Go, it might even be fun to play Let's Go (starting from a new game), but with a self-imposed challenge of only importing pokemon from Go (starting from a new game).
Quite curious to see how pokemon does. I guess the pokemon fan base is pretty strong, strong enough to buy a lot of games and multiple versions. Per the article below, seems like sun and moon (and the ultra variants) sold about 23.6 million across the 4 versions, which is crazy. We'll see if the disagreements over the design choices translate into actually impacting sales http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon
@NewAdvent Don't believe everything you hear, regardless of where you.... reddit ;p
But yeah, I've taken people's or Nintendo Fan Site recommendations before, and I usually don't agree much with people's reviews. I now tend to take the general score, and people's comments, and read of different features in the game all into account, but usually watching a Youtube video of the gameplay itself is my best way of gauging whether or not it would appeal to my particular gaming tastes. I've gotten a pretty accurate feel for it as I go
Interesting that they are offering a digital only version, I know some people (w amiibo/ skylanders / etc) don't care about the toys part of it, so offering a cheaper digital alternative will be a boon for them
I don't mind buying the toys generally, if they look good, as I collect the figurines. Offhand I'm not sure about how these guys look (compared to amiibo, I know they're smaller), though the discount per going digital makes that seem more worthwhile
I am curious about the switching mechanic of the toys, but realistically the digital version seems more practical. I'm curious to see how the sales do per the various versions
I've played Paladins on PC, I enjoyed it, but don't play often. Prefer it to Fortnite.
Downloaded on Switch, haven't given it a go, but Gyro controls sounds like it could make it a lot more fun per playing it on a console. Will have to give it a go sometime
In general (as long as they keep up a good portion of their gamemaking), this is a good thing. Nintendo is primarily a game making company right now, but I know they have already begun branching out into different areas, via mobile gaming (Mario Run, Dragalia Lost, etc), they plan to make a movie (Detective Pikachu), and a theme park addition to Universal Studios.
You could say a byproduct of this is the amiibo (toys) line that came out, which at least for the couple years, was a raging success. I've always wondering why Nintendo hadn't used their IP before to make more quality merch (from Nintendo themselves, and not just unofficial fan sources), so amiibo being as good looking and affordable as they were is/was a winning proposition.
So I'm all for them branching out more into other businesses like t-shirts, wall art, and etc. I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but I'm curious if they still plan to make Quality of Life kind of products, and what that would entail.
The only recommendation I have is that they primarily stay out of Mobile, or if they enter in, that they not be like the competition in regards to the pay scheme. Downloaded Dragalia Lost recently, and while the production qualities look great, it unfortunately has a traditional Mobile pay scheme. Which means it is free to start (which is fine), but if you do pay in it's by no means a good value and... it's kind of scummy. 30 paid drop things to get one character, but only once per day, then you have to use 150? Why does this option even exist?? To scam more people and those who lack patience/ self-control or those who can't do math out of more money, in essence. They could always hard program the price to remain at 30, or just limit buys to 1-3 paid summons a day if their concern is not growing too powerful at once, which it isn't since they still allow the option, as long as you empty your wallet. Even if that wasn't there, it could be debatable on whether the paid drop amount is even worth the cash amount.
That's is my personal belief, I HATE mobile pay schemes and loot boxes with a passion. And I sorely wish Nintendo wouldn't involve themselves in such practices. Part of it to blame is the consumers buying into it and the mobile market, those who have come before and set the precedent for such crappy anti consumer business practices.
I don't know if it exists, but I recommend having a run-auto feature (similar to harvest moon, press to toggle or hold a button to get character to continuously run in direction they're facing until button is depressed or untoggled).
There's a lot of ground to cover in this game, having this feature would ease up on the hands having to hold the joystick in position all the time. I know for Breath of the Wild all the running around wore on my thumb after awhile. I've haven't been motivated to get into this game atm cause I know it doesn't have the feature, at least when I tried it back on Steam awhile back.
Good on them for having a good sales. A co-worker of mine who isn't too big on gaming, got this game and liked it a lot
I'd say I'm similar to a lot of people, I tend to be mixed on a lot of indie games, some cause I'm spoiled by the quality and tight controls Nintendo usually puts out with their games, some because most are on Steam and it's too hard imo to find good indies/ games in general on Steam that I personally like, and gaming on PC is a bit of a hassle to set up a controller on. Plus I tend to prefer gaming on a big screen, and PC tends to be more restrictive.
The Switch has helped a lot in that regard, using a standard controller, being on TV and being able to play portably. A lot of indie games I've been checking out are almost like semi mobile games, the roguelikes are meant to be played in small bursts, but the controls are too complex for simple touch controls. The Switch then really is the perfect platform for a lot of them, and I've been checking and enjoying a lot more of them because of it.
To preface, the Switch as is and idea behind the hardware is marvelously fantastic, love the ability to swap play portable and on the big screen. It's not quite -perfect- yet though imo, there are nuances that could refine it to be more ideal (at least, for my style of gaming).
I'm wishing for Switch XL with wii sized controllers (be much more comfortable for single joycon use)... sacrificing some portability (and battery life) for a much stronger tabletop mode experience for local multiplayer gaming on the go. It'd be perfect for smash and the other couch co-op games coming out, and for such experiences, you don't need hours and hours of battery life, just enough to bring it to a party for 3~5hrs. I personally would pay up to $400 (per new, initial release price) for something like this.
The main other things I would like are a better kickstand with multiple viewing angles, and a non-reflective screen. The reflection can hamper outside play almost completely (at least here in very sunny Arizona).
I don't want a Switch mini, although some extra portability and a slightly more compact size would be nice, the joycon are already small (and hard to get people / nongamers going on, at times). If it's just built into the console, then you lose the flexibility which make joycon awesome (for single joycon play, motion controls, flexible positioning when not on console), plus if the buttons go bad the console is much less useful, whereas the switch you just replace the joycon then you're good to go (from a hardware standpoint). If you lose the dock-ability also, you essentially aren't a 'Switch' anymore, you're an advanced GBA. So, Switch XL is much more desired and consistent imo.
That said, is there any official word of a new SKU, or is that speculation? If it exists, is it for sure a Switch SKU? If not, couldn't it be a successor to 3DS instead, potentially?
Sales is one reason. I'm personally looking for new (and cost-effective) experiences, particularly multiplayer experiences, which I can enjoy with my friends (some of which are more experienced, and some which are new/casual per gaming)
I liked this game a lot when I tried it on PS4, but I'm uncertain how well the aiming and such works on a single joycon (assuming you can play it with a single joycon), anyone have any feedback on this point?
They were being way too blatant, and profiting/attracting customers based on Nintendo's IP (costumes) and idea (via mario kart game), so it would be surprising if Nintendo lost

Re: Feature: What The Smash Pros Have Done To Prepare For Smash Bros. Ultimate
I like to play smash more competitively, but I could argue that it can be good (Even for newcomers) to turn off items.
Not to say you have to play every round this way, but items introduce a level of randomness, and a general need to understand what each item does.
Turning them off can help a player better grasp the fundamentals and mechanics of the game, with less to worry about.

We'll see.
Re: Random: Fans Are Having Too Much Fun With The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Death Beams
Didn't know this was a thing till now.
Love the Grinch, anime girl, ARMS, and King of the Hill ones
Re: Preview: Battle Princess Madelyn Effortlessly Steps Into Sir Arthur's Boots
@Mallow
Probably true...which is why it was wise to not release VC right away, let indies find success and want to dev for Switch.
That said, I still very much want VC, and think it would be a huge waste of potential value for consumer and $ for ninty/publishers not to release it on Switch at some point in time. Here's hoping.
Re: Review: Transistor - A Towering Achievement That Comes Highly Recommended On Switch
Review is giving me second thoughts about this. I tried Bastion but couldn't get into it. The setting here ~seems more interesting, though it sounds a bit repetitive, so it'd all boil down to how good the battle system / customization is. Will have to check out some gameplay vids
Re: A Decade Later Mario Kart Wii Has Now Sold 37.14 Million Copies Worldwide
Mario Kart Wii was one of the better ones imo, though the Kart series in general is bigger than I thought

That turquoise controller looks cool
Re: Four Players Can Build Together In Dragon Quest Builders 2
Not the biggest dragon quest or minecraft fan, but the combination of the two seems interesting. Multiplayer on building games seems fun if you have a good group, could be a good way to build worlds faster (as long as you're not too picky on 'how' it should all be build up)
Re: Fan-Made Website Which Helps Switch Owners Find Online Players Is About To Reach 40,000 Users

Interesting, it's like an interactive where's waldo
Re: GameStop Promo Wants You To Trade-In Your Old Switch For A New Switch
Re: Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland Confirmed For Western Release On Switch

Hmm, that's earlier than I expected. Cool! Already got it preordered
Re: Review: Zarvot - A Mixed-Up Box Of Tricks In More Ways Than One
I'm planning to eventually pick it up, see it more as a multiplayer game.
Re: Japanese Analyst Predicts Switch Sales To Surpass Nintendo's Forecast
We'll see if the disagreements over the design choices translate into actually impacting sales

@NewAdvent
Don't believe everything you hear, regardless of where you....
I've gotten a pretty accurate feel for it as I go
Re: Starlink: Battle For Atlas Switch File Size Revealed, Almost As Large As Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Re: Nintendo Switch Version Of Paladins Is Adding Gyro Controls Next Month
I've played Paladins on PC, I enjoyed it, but don't play often. Prefer it to Fortnite.
Downloaded on Switch, haven't given it a go, but Gyro controls sounds like it could make it a lot more fun per playing it on a console. Will have to give it a go sometime
Re: Nintendo Wants To Be An Entertainment Company, Rather Than A Gaming One
Re: Stardew Valley Dev Shares Thankful Message To Switch Fans, Is Excited About The Game's Future
Re: Alwa’s Awakening First Week Switch eShop Sales Outperform Launch Month On Steam
Re: Feature: What Do You Want From A New Nintendo Switch?

Re: Random: Nintendo Is Now Refusing To Offer Stock To Amazon France After Disagreements
Nintendo: "Do you want to sell our Switch on your site?"
AmazonFr: "Oui"

Nintendo: "...Fine! We'll take our business elsewhere!"
Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Want More Games When We've Already Got Too Many?
Sales is one reason. I'm personally looking for new (and cost-effective) experiences, particularly multiplayer experiences, which I can enjoy with my friends (some of which are more experienced, and some which are new/casual per gaming)
Re: TowerFall - This Couch Co-Op Classic Is Perfectly Suited To Nintendo Switch
I liked this game a lot when I tried it on PS4, but I'm uncertain how well the aiming and such works on a single joycon (assuming you can play it with a single joycon), anyone have any feedback on this point?
Re: There Will Be No More Drifting Around Tokyo In Unlicensed Mario Karts, As Nintendo Wins Lawsuit
They were being way too blatant, and profiting/attracting customers based on Nintendo's IP (costumes) and idea (via mario kart game), so it would be surprising if Nintendo lost
