Last week during the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct before the release of the game in December, Director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed a total of five DLC fighters would eventually be made available and that the team would be working "really hard" on the development of this content. This announcement unsurprisingly led to immediate speculation about the fighters that could potentially be added to the roster - with wild character requests once again being fired in Nintendo's direction.
In the latest news, the game's director has now issued a number of tweets in English to perhaps prevent the onslaught of fighter requests from the game's fans. Sakurai revealed the DLC line-up for Ultimate is already locked-in. Unlike the ballot used to help select the DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS, this time Nintendo's picked the additional fighters. Here are the official tweets from Sakurai-san:
So, there you have it - forwarding messages to Nintendo or Sakurai requesting specific fighters for the upcoming Smash game is no longer necessary. In saying this, it probably won't put a stop to the rumours about what exact characters will be released in the future.
What do you think about Sakurai's twitter posts? Are you happy to hear Nintendo's already picked the DLC fighters? Tell us in the comments.

@ReaderRagfish Pink Gold Peach and Gooigi
It's not ogre yet.
I have no wishes or expectations for who they will be. Just hope they're interesting and fun. Can't ever satisfy the fans who always whinge about certain characters missing anyway. As soon as you announce the one they want, they'll just move to the next on their list and keep complaining.
@PtM theres still a chance that rex and mythra could make it in.
But Bonk! You need to add Bonk!
@PtM Not really a given, plus the headline in a little misleading. The actual tweet makes it seem as though the selection was just now completed, which lines up with what Bill said back in June.
Question is, when was this decision made? Just now, weeks ago, months ago? If just now, Nintendo could either have been paying attention to common names floating around online as far as demands go, or just making decisions based on either best selling Switch titles (Xenoblade 2 passed a million and a half in sales worldwide recently for example.), upcoming Switch games (Fire Emblem Three Houses, Pokemon 8th Gen, etc.) or connections with third parties for further guest characters, or heck a combo of all three/four.
Though I'd be surprised if it was just 5. Could easily see a second character pass (Season 2) being announced. With money generated from both DLC and amiibo figures, you could easily keep earning from your existing playbase as well as newcomers well into 2022, maybe even longer.
I'm also interested as to why he decided to tweet these out in English, which is rather unusual for him.
I really don't care what characters they decide on. After piranha plant i am convinced sakurai can make an interesting fighter out of anything.
I think it's really fun to guess which characters will be in there and to anticipate the amazing announcement trailers but after the hype settles down i'm just gonna play the characters i think have the most fun moveset.
@PrincessBowsette True. If the decision came after the Direct, Nintendo could have been like "Look, the fanbase are a bit unhappy with just a Rex mii outfit. We need to either put him in or another XC2 character." The mii outfit could be something to bind the time till he or another XC2 character is added.
Slender Man confirmed.
My bet is on Geno, Banjo, Skull Kid, Monster Hunter, and Rayman, or probably from Mortal Kombat such as Sub-Zero or Scorpion. Rex is the only character I was really hoping to be added since I had a lot of fun with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Too bad his chances are slim now since music for the game has already been added so there would be no point to include Rex as a DLC character if there's no music to add. Maybe he'll get added as a free character? A man can dream LOL. Will still buy the game at launch though. The amount of work Sakurai and Nintendo has done for this is amazing and I can't wait to for it to consume all my free time.
So Sakurai basically stated here that the DLC characters have been decided by Nintendo (with his approval), not him. If people wind up upset by whoever is chosen, let it be on the record that they were NINTENDO’s choices, hopefully that decreases the amount of hate mail Sakurai receives (but I doubt it). Heck, Piranha Plant might’ve been the company’s choice as well, sure Sakurai could’ve stopped it but it might not have been his idea. Though I still like Piranha Plant, regardless of some... reactions.
Also I still believe the poll for Smash 4 was just publicity and those characters were decided before the game released as well.
I look forward to seeing who makes this cut. Still have a shred of hope for Geno, even if it’s a stretch. I’d settle for Banjo or even Sora (that would likely be a lot of hoops to jump through though).
@janfritz cross our fingers for Season 2 of DLC, Rex has a better chance there.
I don't know what to think about this. On the one hand, Nintendo's been on fire lately with giving fans what they want with games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, but on the other hand they've been absurdly tone deaf with things like Switch Online and treatment of some of their smaller franchises. I guess I'm just hoping that Nintendo doesn't add in some sort of reviled character for the sake of promoting a new game and tarnish Smash Bros.' legacy.
@Angelic_Lapras_King mii have almost every other character outfits plus i didnt see mythra in the trailer part of the rex mii outfit.
We all know it's not going to be characters we like so I guess these may be possible (as evidence by the addition of the Piranha Plant):
Waddle Dee from Kirby
Stalfos from the Legend of Zelda
Dumb Drum from Donkey Kong Country
Rip Van Fish from Super Mario World
Professor Oak from Pokemon Red and Blue
Clawgrip from Super Mario Bros. 2
Tatanga from Super Mario Land
Buzzy Beetle from Super Mario Bros.
Poochy from Tetris Attack and Yoshi's Island
Bullet Bill from Super Mario Bros.
Rambi from Donkey Kong Country
Big Boo from Super Mario World
Pauline from Donkey Kong
Bob-omb from Super Mario Bros. 2
Big Bertha from Super Mario Bros. 3
Rick from Kirby's Dream Land 2
Bob-omb? Goomba? Or maybe Bullet Bill. How are they ever gonna top Piranha Plant.... 🤯
This man deserves a real, long break after Ultimate.
If they already know who they are going to be they should just reveal it already. That way people can decide whether or not to buy the DLC. I remember that Sakurai said they didn't reveal the DLC because they hadn't started it. Well you have it planned so just tell us the names. We don't need fancy reveal videos.
my bets on banjo, geno, bandanna dee, maybe a rhythm heaven rep and ... maaaaybe tails. i feel like Sonic's been overdue for a new rep for awhile, specially since shadow's an assist.
"Nintendo has already decided who the DLC characters will be. I had nothing to do with it! They just so happened to select:
Lupus the sword-fighter from Fire Emblem 19
Fauntleroy the sword-fighter from Fire Emblem DX6
Bart-Bart the sword-fighter from Fire Emblem x Fire Album
Wicker the sword-wielding mage from Fire Emblem Furry Edition
Ducky & Dicky the twin sword-fighters from Fire Emblem x Golden Sun
Lakitu's Cloud from the Super Mario series
I had nothing to do with these! honest! I mean, I don't even like sword-fighters or Fire Emblem!"
@Radbot42 yeah but they JUST started development. there's no way they have acceptable footage to show for these guys, just who they're gonna do.
@MushHill_Act1-1
I dont need footage, i just need names
@Radbot42 eh, from a subjective standpoint I get whatcha mean.
I want to know who they are so badly.
Shantae art in latest Direct. Those hoping for Shovel Knight, he is an assist. If Nintendo makes just one assist from this into an actual character for the next Smash, then Shovel Knight could happen, for you SK fans to consider. Sidenote: SK kinda looks interesting.
@FNL
Ok, but can we actually have Fire Emblem X Golden Sun now, because that sounds dope as heck.
Or actually anything Golden Sun, as I would like to get into that series... I have Dark Dawn, but I haven't played it yet, and I've heard it's not so great compared to the two before it.
I kind of feel like they did several fighters as DLC so they could get the rights but not have to pay a portion of Smash sales, or the other party was like, "Our character is super valuable" and Nintendo was like, if that's true you won't mind getting a percentage of revenue.
Also given that Vergeben was right about ... basically all the fighters, I'm going to guess that one will be an Square Enix character (Guessing Geno, hoping not Sora since I'm not a KH fan) I'm guessing no other Capcom reps since Though they could always go with a Dragon Quest rep?) They were also saying Microsoft rep of some kind would come in so I'm gonna bet on Banjo & Kazooie.
Honestly I'm kinda running dry on other DLC fighters. He said no Echos so I'm kinda hoping Nintendo might dig deep and make Dixie a fighter, but I'm doubtful. I don't think we're going to get any weird obscure fighters for these, I suspect they'll all be big name characters that can be on a Nintendo console ... though I'm kinda realizing most of the big names are already in Smash.
@OdnetninAges The two first ones were fantastic. The 3DS one was ... meh.
I'd actually be happy if they just remade the first two games as one game for the Switch.
This is... Interesting. Sakurai made the choices for characters before, right? Well, I guess he still is here, but from a pool of characters chosen by Nintendo themselves. I guess this means third parties might not be DLC after all?
And how does this bode for Rex & Pyra's chances? From the sound of it, the list was finalized today, so they might actually have a chance.
@DavidMac
Personally, I'm hoping that at least GBA games will be released on the Switch. I'm out of room for games on my Wii U, and I don't really want to go to the effort of getting a hard drive for it just for the first two Golden Sun games, as much as I would like to play them.
Obviously all 5 of the characters are from Shrek.
i really hope three of the dlc fighters are crash, spyro, and sephiroth!
@ReaderRagfish Boss Baby is a strong possibility.
My predictions:
1. Geno
2. Banjo & Kazooie
3. Bandana Waddle Dee
4. Tails
5. Tetra
My wishes:
1. Shantae
2. Camilla
3. Geno
4. Masked Man
5. Marina Liteyears (I'm the only one who remembers her... ;_; )
Octolings as echo fighters will surely come at some point.
With all the fighters available i doubt I'll cave in for the dlc.. it would have to be pretty tempting for me to opt in. Which reminds Me, brawlhalla is actually pretty addictive!
Predictions:
1) Boo
2) Birdo
3) Shy Guy
4) Wart
5) Captain Toad
Most likely the picks will be chosen to promote new games for the next year.
1. New Fire Emblem Rep
2. New Pokemon Rep
3. Maybe a popular third party character
4. Who knows.
5. Rose Gold Peach.
@PtM I think he was referring to how the base roster was chosen before Xenoblade 2, but either way, I'm still very uncertain of Rex's chances. Especially now with Nintendo themselves making the character choices.
With Nintendo themselves choosing the characters, I do wonder how this will effect the chances of less relevant characters like Geno. With Sakurai mainly choosing I definitely felt like he had a chance, but Nintendo may want to utilize the DLC to promote their current games and possibly improve third party relationships.
Weird, the Direct made it sound like they hadn't decided yet. Did they just decide in the last few days?
Well that makes things interesting. I'm a little concerned about the premise of "Nintendo" choosing DLC over Sakurai...that's a very ambiguous case, since it begs the question of who/whom is actually making the decision. I would also tend to expect that this will reduce the number of third-party characters (but not eliminate them).
Here's my list, assuming that the ONLY deconfirming factor is Assist Trophy/Pokeball Status:
1) Mipha - we need a LoZ rep that isn't part of the tri-Force. Nintendo may simply request that Sakurai choose one champion, and Mipha of the four would bring the most unique new playstyle to Ultimate as a trident user. Plus you could very easily add alt costumes based off past Zora, as the Zora are the most reoccurring groups in LoZ of the four.
2) Rex & Pyra - dependent on what Sakurai meant in his comment during the direct, but I don't believe that comment ruled them out for DLC, only the base game. Nintendo will want another rep for this popular series, so I fully expect them. It'll be interesting to see how the blade mechanic gets integrated.
3) Geno - No, I don't think Nintendo is entirely deaf to the pleas of the fans, especially given the money that this would bring them.
4) Tails - People may be frustrated with the direction of Sonic games, but it still could use another rep. With Shadow (& Knuckles) out, Tails makes sense.
5) I'm not sure on the last one. I'd say it's a tossup between Ribbon Girl, a Kirby character like Bandana Dee, or a 3rd party. Sakurai probably wouldn't include an Arms character, but I would not put it past Nintendo to do so.
Waluigi confirmed
I am happy and grateful for whatever the game gets.
Seems like Sakurai is salty. Is Nintendo forcing him to put Waluigi in the game?
Leave the man allone he did enough
@JR150 That goes for me too .
I do not really mind who gets in (game is full of content and the people I’d like to play) but if I would have guessed it it would be:
Someone from the Tekken games like Jin or Heinachi.
Someone from Sonic like Silver or Espio (which seems like a great fit to me).
Someone from Kirby.
Someone from Square Enix
And for the last person or thing, someone from a wild game no one expects once again.
One of the lock-ins for DLC may be a character from Xenoblade (Elma?). In the latest Smash Direct there was lots of Xenoblade talk (Rex Mii Swordfighter costume included as a Fighters Pass Purchase Bonus, Xenoblade music, Xenoblade Spirits, etc.) within the DLC presentation. Why else put Xenoblade content inside the DLC presentation?
I believe the other 4 characters are ones that have not been seen yet in Spirits, Costumes, or Assist Trophys. Maybe we'll see some huge crossovers since Nintendo decided the 5 remaining DLC fighters and there are popular 3rd parties interested to have their fighter included in Smash. It will be interesting to see if one or two of them made it.
Unfortunately more fighters were deconfirmed in the latest Direct:
Basically all characters from the latest Nintendo games were too late to be considered: No ARMS, Snipperclips, Mario+Rabbids, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, or Splatoon 2 fighters. And fan-favourites like Chibi-Robo, Isaac from Golden Sun, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong, Shadow and Tails from Sonic The Hedgehog, Black Knight and Tiki from Fire Emblem also appeared as AT's, spirits and/or costumes. With tons of potential fighters deconfirmed there is new excitement and a bit of a surprise element added for the remaining DLC fighters.
@KoekiieWoekiie
You might be on to something. They showed Akira from Virtua Fighter and Guile from Street Fighter as AT's, but I was missing Heihachi.
I would be shocked if Silver and Espio would get a chance over Shadow, Tails, and Knuckles. If there was another Sonic fighter in Smash the next in line would be Dr. Eggman.
@janfritz Rayman just got added to Brawlhalla. I doubt he will make a Smash Appearance.
My biggest gripe with Smash is the price. It is way more expensive than other new releases.
Piranha Plant is the most wonderful thing, so no matter what they pick, I fully trust them to make it special
That seemed obvious to me from the wording in the Direct.
@FNL xD Man I'm honestly hoping for another FE character, BUT NOT A gods be darned GENERIC SWORDFIGHTER... I love swords, I love swordfighters...
But give me one of the actual in-depth characters from the franchise...
Hector, Lyndis, Tharja, Anna, Cynthia, Owain, Gerome, Henry, Azura, Felicia, Rinkah, Oboro, Reina, Scarlet, Peri, Effie, Niles, Marisa, Tethys, Myrrh...
THE LIST GOES ON. So many great characters to choose from, and so far they've chosen pure generic garbage (Ike, Chrom, Roy, Robin, Corrin, Marth, Lucina).
Fire Emblem Three Houses representation seems very likely at this point.
@SKTTR Yeah I also would be shocked if anyone else but Eggman would be brought over from the Sonic series. Oh well only time eill tell.
Campaining is useless now, but we can still dream. How about:
1- Shantae (I'm a fan-boy, ok? But still a good indie rep)
2- Tails (Because Sonic is lonely)
3- A Resident Evil Rep like Jill (possible trap character abit like Snake, plus RE is a legacy series)
4- Crash Bandicoot (or Rayman. Both are platform legends and could get a spot)
5- Chibi-Robo (the little guy deserves some love!)
@KoekiieWoekiie
It's funny because they origibally considered Heihachi for Smash 4 but settled on Pac-Man as a Namco rep because his moveset was too hard. However since Namco themselves are the co-devs for 4 and Smash Ultimate they could probably figure it out.
But again they already decided. I'm not saying we shouldn't guess but at the same time it's the month of Thanksgiving...
Don't really care who, I'll get it whatever, JUST GIVE ME THAT GAME!!
@Franklin I'm pretty sure he already confirmed that none of the DLC fighters will be Echos.
So as much as I'd like that, it's probably never going to happen.
(But hey, at least that means Shadow will never make it in. Happy days.)
This guy, seriously, he just needs to delete twitter. Twitter is a horrible place everyone knows that, he should just let official twitter feeds deal with news. I read those tweets and just dislike the guy.
I was hoping for isaac, but seeing him as an assist 😂😭 too bad.
but now i am curious who the 5 characters are.
@AlphaElite They just lie, they try and tell people what they think they want to hear and then they decide they don't want requests. These five were meant to be in the game and they held 5 for DLC and the extra revenue. No way in a week the nailed it all down. The issue they have is the game has 75 fighters and countless levels (and obviously the actual game) - £40 - 5 fighters and levels - £25. That pricing is crazy.
We will all pay it but something on one of the sides is wrong.
@Stocksy We have no evidence the five DLC characters were held back from the main game.
This sounds like Nintendo gave him their own short list and Sakurai picked from that. I wonder if they'll use this to promote (a) new game(s), or if they worked some things out with third parties.
Not that there's anything I want specifically right now. At least nothing realistic. But I'm extremely curious as to what we'll get. I guess we'll get an idea when we see the first one, some time next year.
I bet 1 is Yookah and Laylee
@janpampoen The base game is 60 bucks, which is the industry standard right now. Are you looking at the price of a bundle or special edition?
@WreckitRyan I think it's kind of self-explanatory, really. The English-speaking fanbase is the most selfish, loud and obnoxious about what they want, so he's specifically asking them to can it.
@Indielink we have no evidence that they weren't and last week they hadn't been decided and now all of a sudden they have. I don't believe they are finished, just when deciding the roster they would have discussed DLC, who will sell etc if included. They don't just guess this stuff, they will use at least some science and that takes time. My guess would be that 3rd party characters will be featured - as its easier to work out payment etc.
Noice! Can’t wait for the reveal!
It is sad and hilarious that he had to essentially make a polite “please leave me alone statement “... fans, putting the fan in fanatic since always.
@janpampoen It is 60 bucks just like every thing else. You don’t have to buy DLC.
@BenAV so true about character whinning. I am pretty content on the roster as it is. My only hope is that the 5 remaining characters add new franchises to be represented.
I just hope that a new Kirby rep was picked.
Not surprised by that. They still have the answers from the poll. Might not be the most recent since there came out a lot of games between then and now, but still.
What’s interesting here is that Sakurai says Nintendo chose the characters this time. Unless I’m mistaken, up to this point, he has chosen the characters. If Nintendo is the one making the selections, I have a feeling they’re going to be a bit more conservative and less off-the-wall. Which is fine by me, after seeing Pirahna Plant.
@Blizzia Robin is very different from his other FE reps....how is he generic?
No one else in the game plays like him, and I'm pretty sure this is just a salt induced comment.
That said, sure, I do agree that I wanna see a non weapon weilding character if we get another FE rep. Something like a sorceror or manakete.
@Blizzia Mind your language!
@Platinumhobo Character mate. Personality. Depth. Not how he bloody plays in the game 😂 all the characters are the most generic ones from all of the Fire Emblem universe. There literally could not have been worse choices. There are so many cool and 3-dimensional characters in the franchise, so writing us off with them all being the boring protagonist/tactician is extremely annoying for Fire Emblem fans.
@Octane I used no offensive language, so there is no reason to mind my language.
@Blizzia Well, yeah, I removed it...
Since Dr. Wily is in already (assist trophy or spirit, I don't remember anymore), I hope some ARMS representative gets in as a playable fighter. Would like Ribbon Girl or Master Mummy (preferring the latter since he's heavy) since their fighting style would fit right in.
I guess there'll be someone from Xenoblade, probably Elma (Xeno-X port for Switch anyone?) or Rex & Pyra / Mythra.
I would love the Octopath Travelers to get in, because the game was an exclusive, very good and pretty popular.
Other than that I have no idea what the DLC will bring, except for at least one very happy gamer, who find's every Euro spent on SmashUltimate worth it - I can hardly wait for the release.
Edit: The Monster Hunter would make a very fitting addition as well. Every attack with a different weapon, all costumes a different equipment-set. Gorgeous to look at.
@Octane Fair enough. I put it back in. You will not be censoring the meaning of my message. Check the new version if you wish.
@Radbot42 Yes we do
Nintendo selected them? Odd, but here are my predictions-
I think one of the things we need to know is if characters who are Spirits are disqualified as being characters. We know that when trophies were around, it did not ruin characters chances of being in the game as DLC (Mewtwo and Lucas, anyone?) If the same is true with Spirits, we could possibly see characters like Dixie Kong. Assist Trophies, I'm a bit more skeptical about. It's not impossible, when we look at something like Ashley and yes, Waluigi. I don't think such additions are likely, but I've been wrong before.
Also, I don't think we'll be flooded with third party characters, like we were in Smash 4. Banjo and Kazooie? Probably. A Monster Hunter rep? Maybe. Maybe something to come completely out of left field. Who knows?
Also, I don't think it's likely we'll be seeing any Echo Fighters in these DLC packs, unless they are included as a bonus. I see no reason why they would be standalone paid characters.
Edit: On the Spirit's front, I should point out that some characters, or at the very least King K Rool, have a Spirit that is based on them. Now, maybe that does not apply, as K Rool was (likely) confirmed before Spirits was conceived, although I have no way of knowing that.
Tbh I don't mind whoever it is. I'm very satisfied with what I've got atm, no specific requests. Amaze me Sakurai.
That last leak that came out right before the direct had some interesting names on it. At least Ken was right on the spot...
If more of it turns out to be factual, i wish for Geno (or any Mario RPG unique char), Mach Rider and Banjo.
Sora would also be a good choice, as i see many people asking for him and i think he could really fit well within Nintendo's universe.
@g_ruz Metal Mario and Professor E. Gadd
@Blizzia Have you done your research? NONE of these characters are generic! (I could see with Chrom and Lucina though) Roy and Ike especially are unique sword-fighters as well as Robin (I mean come on, he uses legit magic!) However they are all unique in their own way. Forgive me me for saying this but this sounds like you are slightly biased and or salty.
A lot of my character wishes have been deconfirmed in one way or another. Chibi-Robo, Midna (she would need to be riding Wolf Link of course), Waluigi, Spring Man... And a lot of the Assist Trophies have great potential, but, as previously stated, are Assist Trophies. I could see the Badge Arcade Bunny being a great joke character if he weren’t an Assist, attacking people with badges, claws, and bombs.
At this point I’m not even gonna try to guess who it is. If Piranha Plant can make it, anyone can. (Please do the cardboard Labo guy)
@Reigestugatensho I see you didn't see my reply to the first person who asked me this: Being a Fire Emblem fan and not in any way a Smash fan, I am, always, talking about personality, and depth of the actual character. NOT how they're played in Smash.
(I've pre-purchased ssbu because it seemed fun, beyond that I'm not into it at all. I know NOTHING about how they fight in Smash, only FE, which, well, is much the same since they're almost all using the same weapon classes.)
This is not about Smash playstyle. It's purely about the character. While there are tiers (Ike and Roy above the rest of the pack), they're some of the most generic characters in Fire Emblem, which is a darn shame. There are many MUCH better characters that could have been included, especially regarding the amount of "fame" they have. Ike and Roy are a cut above the rest mainly due to their own personal fame, as well as the fact that they're actually decently fleshed out characters (albeit with slightly generic quests as usual), but they're still just two swordfighters in a crowd of almost the same (speaking of Fire Emblem as a franchise).
The franchise has a metric ton of unique great characters, and instead we get a bunch of swordsmen/women, a tactician and a half-dragon half-human unit.
Don't get me wrong, I like most of them from the franchise, truly. But they're a far cry from the most influential characters from said franchise, let alone their own games (bar Ike, by god people adore that guy. I'll never understand.)
So when I'm asking you, within the Fire Emblem franchise, whether you think Chrom is generic compared to, say, Henry or Gerome, the only outcome is this: Answering yes.
Here’s my 5 picks — still close to my ballot entry way back when!
Banjo-Kazooie
Captain Toad
Phoenix Wright w/ Apollo Justice
Professor Layton w/ Katriel
Waluigi
@Reigestugatensho All joking aside, I’d actually be stoked if Prof. E. Gadd made the cut. If they can make a legless character like Piranha Plant work, I feel like they could do something really fun and whimsical with E. Gadd! 😄
75 characters, story mode, 108 stages, 900 tracks, Spirits, super meter, changable mid fight stages, DLC, a whole ton of other features, and people are still pitchforks and torches. Why?
@HatosBlack Because their unreasonable wishes haven't been granted yet I mean, honestly, when you see people asking for something like Geno, a character that has appeared in ONE game that wasn't popular enough to warrant a true sequel... And be outraged when he's not actually getting into the game... Yeah.
So people want their fav chars from any franchise, and when they don't get it, pitchforks.jpg.
I always thought the "ballot" from Smash Wii U was just a way to keep people from pestering Sakurai. Not that it stops them anyway.
@Stocksy The DLC characters definitely aren't finished yet, heck Piranha Plant apparently isn't finished yet.
If Nintendo themselves came up with the list and Sakurai picks what he wants from said list, then they have probably been going back and forth for the last few months on each character. I don't think it's implausible to say that last week they only had three picked and only finalized the last two yesterday.
dang, Sakurai is overworking himself..
Anyways, my predictions is
1. Waddle Dee. He deserves more respect, also because Kirby needs a new rep.
2. Captain Toad. He has some much potential!
3. Geno. Ok mayyyybe this has no chance, but i can still gope for atleast Geno!
4. Fire Emblem rep. Its pretty obvious.
I WAS hoping Rayman, but didnt he get sold to another fighting game?
Tons of possibilities, but only 5 will make it. I'm sure the dataminers are just chomping at the bit to get their hands on SSBU so they can get to leakin'...
@Ryu_Niiyama South African here. Usually games go for about R880, or about 50 euros. Smash is retailing for R1100, or about 80 euros.
@personauser0893 South African here. Usually games go for about R880, or about 50 euros. Smash is retailing for R1100, or about 80 euros.
@Regpuppy South African here. Usually games go for about R880, or about 50 euros. Smash is retailing for R1100, or about 80 euros.
And I'm just sitting here like, if you have ideas for stuff like this before the game is even out, then just wait and put them in the game. I remember a time when people would be outraged that DLC would be set before the game even releases, and now it's not only considered acceptable, but it's expected and people look forward to it.
And yet I'll probably buy the DLC myself so I'm a hypocrite I suppose.
When they announced Piranha Plant, my first thought was "Whaaa...?" and then I saw it fighting and I was like "Huh, interesting..." I get the feeling it's going to have its niche. That being said, it's impossible to guess what could be coming for new fighters if they're willing to make PIRANHA PLANT a full fighter.
Skull Kid. The first time I saw someone suggest it I thought that would be really cool and unless someone's seen him as an assist or a spirit or something I'm still holding out a little hope. Feel free to crush it if you have seen him deconfirmed. But if it's anything LoZ, it'll probably be from BotW. In which case I want Kilton.
Grinch confirmed!!!1!
WA WA WALUIGI!!!
Would be funny if they saw the meme overload of Bowsette and Boosette and made either one of them as a playable character in DLC lol.
@janpampoen That sounds like a regional issue then. I don't think Nintendo is dictating that price.
I know this wont happen but i would love to see arthur from ghosts n goblins make it in..
@ShadJV I'm pretty sure though it was used in SSBU. Ridley and King K. Rool were certainly fan favourites.
@Bensei oh I agree entirely. While I don’t think they used them to determine DLC for Smash 4, I assumed they’d likely look at those results for future installments (and we know they started Ultimate as soon as they finished Smash 4’s DLC). It was a goldmine of information and I have no doubt they took it into account for this game. Perhaps I shouldn’t have worded it in the way I did, as I don’t think it was JUST publicity. Nintendo likely already knew they’d be starting the next game shortly after finishing that one, but they weren’t going to announce that. Smash 4’s DLC was a good cover to gather player opinions for the next roster, and the benefit was it gave them good publicity at the time. Wouldn’t be surprised if Simon Belmont was high in the results too.
I'm hoping for something equally as weird and wonderful as the piraña plant
Yes, between Nintendo and fans, I trust Nintendo a little more....
Dillon could make a pretty cool Sonic echo. I think he's a lot more interesting than Sonic as a character in general.
Also, I do want Geno. But why doesn't anybody want Mallow? I liked Mallow at least as much as I liked Geno. Okay, maybe not quite so much. But still. Or Boshi? No Boshi love? Easy echo there.
Tingle better be a DLC fighter or I will never buy another Nintendo game for the rest if my life. Goemon would be a really cool obscure 3rd party character.
@MasterGraveheart

@Blizzia I get that Chrom may seem generic compared to the thousands of other characters they have made in FE but All of those characters are unique in of them self. Slightly hurt about what you said on Roy (but I understand) and Ike...... Everyone loves Ike.
EDIT: If they put in another unique character from FE (I know there are tons) but would it be appreciated by other people that aren't fans of the series is what I'm saying. The current Fire Emblem characters we have know are manly chosen by popularity not for Personality, Depth, or character. But I've always wanted a Cavalier class character in smash. And you never know maybe Sakurai already knows we are in dire need of another FE character that meets these attributes and is going put that character in as part of DLC.
So from what I've seen...
-Rayman in not a spirit
-he is not an assist trophy
My boi with detached arms still stands a chance!!!
@Abes3 How about Primid or another memeber of the army of the Subspace Emissary.
@Reigestugatensho Problem is that it honestly doesn't matter too much if fans outside the franchise don't all know the character. You put a character from a franchise in the game because people of the franchise would love it.
As far as FE characters go, I'm aware Ike is the most universally liked one (fml), but other than that, there were several chars more popular than Roy/Marth/Lucina/Chrom.
It just sucks that we can't get something reasonably unique outside a bunch of swordies. I know Robin is pretty nice to play and the same with Corrin, but it's just not anything special compared to getting one of the really unique characters (something like an AXE wielder? or a SPEAR/LANCE wielder? I mean how awesome wouldn't that be?)
What a polite way to say **** off. Pretty cool guy.
@Reigestugatensho I was thinking more Toadette or Chainchomp or the penguin from mario64 lol. Could even be something from odyssey like the rabbits
If Sakurai picked Isabelle, Ken and Incineroar then Nintendo can't exactly do any worse anyways. He had his chance to make people happy with the general top 6 or 7 characters most people seemed to want but he and Nintendo decided to make this a DLC cash cow instead.
@Blizzia Oh I see now. Well, alright, that's what you'd like to see. Personally, I don't care much either way if they use a character with a lot of personality because it's Smash. You barely get a chance to see that personality stand out. Heck, though I know you think of her as a boring FE character, Lucina is very quirky yet we see none of that in her moves or dialog. FE just isn't the series I'd look to in Smash for loads of quirks, but that's just me.
I respect your desire for a "better" FE rep regardless.
@RadoGoji I feel similarly, however I get it for Ultimate. They likely cut a few things here and therr to make sure the game was out holiday 2018. Gotta keep that Switch momentum going. And knowing Sakurai it couldn't have been anything bigger than a few characters cut. So a few characters as dlc is ok by me, this time.
@Abes3 Nice idea! I feel like the Broodals Could be like echoes or even original rivals of the Koopalings!
@Blizzia Did you read my EDIT? I am agreeing with you, I also want a more unique character in there. Like maybe a Wyvren Rider class fighter.
@PrincessBowsette No there isn't. They said in the direct that rex wasn't going to be added to the game, and instead made him a mii costume.
