@LetsaGO If all the Wii U owners also own a Switch now, that's only 20% of the Switch userbase (probably less, as I'm sure I'm going by outdated numbers for Switch sales). I mean, yeah, it does suck for those who had it, but the numbers show why they would keep doing this and games shouldn't be left to rot in history on a failed system. This gets them out there to a wider, substantially larger audience.
What fascinates me most about this is how much time and energy people put into dwelling on and desperately trying to force themselves to like something just because many other people do. Or trying to understand why they don't, as if it's a problem or something wrong with themselves, as evidenced by the repeated attempts with multiple versions over 25 years. Threads of this exact same thing come up in the forums all the time. It's right there in the article - "it's another reminder that I could be playing, you know, a good game." I don't get this behaviour at all.
I always play on 'normal' the first time through, because I presume that's the mode the developers intended as the experience, then added other adjusted modes.
Not surprised at all this poll was skewed for Switch/2017. Its the most recent and we have a lot of people now who can't say whether the NES/SNES/n64 times were good or not as it's just history to be read. I voted for the early 90s. SNES was amazing, Nintendo had tons of 3rd party support, in my opinion better than even now. No old or scaled down ports (not putting those down), but they had many 3rd party exclusives, and with multi-plats the Nintendo version was often the superior version. Nintendo themselves cranking out awesome games, expanding on past games and concepts. The Game Boy was established as the king of handheld, beating out much more powerful (and colour) rivals. It was a golden era for Nintendo.
As a notable mention, I don't know if it was their best year or not, but one of the most important was when they resurrected the entire gaming industry with the NES.
You know what really motivates and helps me at work? When someone is constantly over my shoulder badgering me about how it's going, how long it's going to be and wanting an update every 30 seconds. People just need to leave all these developers alone and let them update when they're ready to say something.
No, I don't miss it. I'm never into the spectacle anyway and don't usually watch them, I just get recaps on sites like this after.
I don't like that it makes companies announce something, whether they are ready to or not because of some arbitrary deadline. Fans escalate this by losing their minds, demanding info now, now, NOW. Look at this site, there's a lot of that. Nintendos not ready to show anything, so they're not. Whatever, not like there's a shortage of games available as it is.
I'd bet Nintendo regrets announcing Metroid Prime 4. They weren't ready to, and look whats happened.
I'd rather developers just announce when they're ready. All the sites pick it up anyway, so it's not like I have to go hunting announcements down. Just visit my favourite sites regularly and I'm up to date.
This is going to be awful. Live action is a terrible idea and limits them so much. Animated, I would be pumped for, they could stick to the era it's set and have all the freedom they needed to do it justice.
@gokev13 I would almost bet it will somehow be set or connected to the current day. Either Mega Man travels back in time or they completely forget the story and 'reinvent' it to be set in the current times.
While it's not cool how this stuff was obtained, it is cool to see, from a historical standpoint. Seeing stuff like this really lets you see how the design process went.
@nessisonett There's a site devoted to this stuff, if you've never seen and interested in more. It's called The Cutting Room floor (tcrf.net) and they have a LOT of stuff like this archived there from pretty well every system.
I'm not into paying more for games that are increasingly being released incomplete, bug-ridden, filled with garbage microtransactions and/or content held back to be sold as DLC. As the current industry is, I rarely buy games full price when new. I wait to see what DLC and stuff is coming and then buy the entire thing as one cheaper package later, usually on sale.
If a game is complete, then yes, I would by more new at full price. But that's pretty well unrealistic for many new releases now.
Clicked this thinking Prime 4 was actually mentioned or talked about in some way. No mention of it at all in quote, and he only mentions the existing games.
Well, couch multiplayer was the reason I was looking forward to this. This bumps it way down the list so far that I'll probably never end up getting it now.
Nothing against online for those that will use it, especially now with the world as it is, but this should have both. This is like stripping out couch play from Mario Kart, Mario Party or any fighting game ever.
@FredsBodyDouble A lot of us old guys also grew up playing games at 256x244 (or less). Doesn't mean I want to now. Difference is, that was the best they could do back then. There's no excuse for it now, especially when expecting full price for it.
I also grew up with dial-up and all kinds of other now-outdated technology. I don't think I'd be fine with 36.6k internet now just because I was used to it as a teen.
I'm starting to wonder if people automatically vote Japan because it looks different from what we're used to or something....
European one has the best colour so it edges out the NA one (though I don't like the squared off orange bit for the company name at the bottom). It looks like it's a shooter. Japan one....doesn't even imply it's a shooter and it's not that great. Buddy looks like he crashed and his ship is entrenched in vines and this is going to be an adventure/action game where you control the guy.
I voted for Zelda II. But, I don't want a full remake of it. Personally, I think it's a great game, just suffering from some (pretty big) flaws that hinder the entire game for a lot of people. I just want to see it remade in a slightly prettier package, with these big flaws fixed up.
On a different note, Kid Icarus: Uprising doesn't need a remake, it just needs an HD release with normal controls that aren't seemingly made to cramp your hand as much as possible.
NA, easily. Japans is just empty scenery. The European is not only ugly but far too much empty black space. It looks like it was put together by someone who didn't know how to use the app to do so. Generic font slapped in there for Ubisoft, other logos just put wherever and the Actraiser logo itself is awful missing the effects the others have.
Slowly but surely we are getting there. Loot boxes are the cancer of gaming and companies like EA use them to prey on kids.
As I've said before, every game with this kind of gambling should be rated, at the very least, Mature. Personally, I think they should be given the rare A-O rating. Why? Because they go a step further than games with violence, nudity and substance usage. Games with those things portray them, while games with loot boxes aren't portraying gambling, they actually have gambling for kids.
What amazes me is how many people still fund things on kickstarter after countless stories of bad experiences, many times on a large scale. Tales of good things like Shovel Knight really seem to be the exception and far from the rule.
I didn't really read much of the review beyond the bit about not being really newcomer friendly being a direct sequel and the first 2 being needed. That pretty much killed it for me.
15/15 A lot of these are pretty easy, even for people who haven't played Smash. A lot of these characters have pretty distinctive shapes for anyone vaguely familiar with them.
So, this is an article about what EA is planning on doing with Star Wars on other consoles? Because we know they aren't going to put any effort into putting anything new they do on Switch. At best we'll get some lazy mobile port.
As has been pointed out, they didn't support the Wii. They churned out quick garbage as quick as they could to take advantage of a runaway console. That's all they're doing now. The word 'support' shouldn't be used at all. EA isn't the only one guilty of it, but there have been third party actually supporting Switch and helping build its install base. Some with new games and others via ports only. EA and a few others are just taking advantage of everyone elses actual support. There's no reason they couldn't have at least ported some older stuff over. Between stuff like this and their garbage micro-transaction gambling that preys on kids, it's no wonder they have the reputation they do.
Support? No. They barely released token games on Switch while it was building its playerbase with the help of many other third parties that were there early on. Now that it's established and any risk is gone, they just want to cash in.
It's still useless you have the extremely tiny handful of games that get any use out of it. And even then, most of that stuff should be on-board the Switch.
A terrible game about sh*t is pretty fitting. I really loathe this side of gaming culture that spawned guys like this that became, and somehow remained, popular.
Long before the Super Game Boy came out, I had always wanted a way to play GB games on the TV when I was home. Being a kid, I envisioned some monstrous device that would allow me to do it. Not long after, the SGB came along and it blew my mind this tiny thing that plugged into my SNES would do what I wanted. By far, the best and most used accessory I ever had for any console.
The digital future with Nintendo is only scary because they don't really know what they're doing with how to handle digital aspects.
Stuff like Labo and Ring Fit wouldn't be affected in the all digital near-future. All you do is buy the physical accessory and it has a download code inside for the actual software. Digital only majoryt is coming (there will always be a niche market for the physical), no matter how much people complain and fight against it. It's wasted energy and the paltry loss of sales from the few who would actually stick to giving up new games due to it would be so insignificant as to not even warrant a blip on the radar.
@Incoherent1 I know, right? There was a couple with such a hard stance against it, positive it would fail, the worst idea ever. Problem with such a firm stance is now you have to admit you were incredibly wrong or just disappear. Seems they all took the latter option, since I don't see them around anymore.
I did a lot of couch multiplayer back in the day. Never did try this game though, the hassle of needing GBAs and by the time this came out my friends and I didn't live so close together anymore, so I never even bothered to try it. I'm looking forward to it now, though. My friends still live a bit too distant for regular sessions, but online would be great.
North America, hands down. Like the article says, the Banjo Man box art is the only reason I knew this game then. I've still never even played this game, but still remember it to this day because of the box art. It did it's job incredibly well for standing out and being memorable.
Developers could get a hell of a lot more out of the Switch.....if they were designing games for it. These ports and whatnot were designed to run on different systems and are being modified to run on Switch, which isn't the same thing.
There's not much I'd even really want, only 3 of them actually. Mario 3D World, I enjoyed this far more than Odyssey and would love a portable version. Xenoblade Chronicles X, I'd love to have this to round out the set with the other two. NES Remix, great for short burst challenges when out and about with the Switch.
Isn't this kind of......really obvious? Like, wow, that huge physical music collection you once had can now fit on your phone, in case you didn't know!
No. It's awful. Why are these functions limited to certain games and a pitifully small number of them? Why are many key features from a decade ago just missing altogether? Why do I need the cumbersome set up of needing a 2nd device to communicate in a game rather than just using the device I'm already holding in my hands? The app should be a supplement offering things like AC QR codes and whatnot. It should not be the primary and only option for basic online functionality. Sometimes, being different simply for the sake of being different (as Nintendo is known for) really doesn't work out. Too bad they are also like a stubborn mule when it comes to changing, so we'll likely never see any improvement.
I believe the trilogy is probably ready to go, but I think they're holding it back to release with a major Prime 4 announcement and/or closer to the Prime 4 release.
The Japanese and American ones destroy that awful EU one. The EU one is just a lame generic robot picture (about as lame as subbing in robots was to begin with). I'd guess this was some lackluster generic mech game going by this. I assume the votes it's getting are far from the people who grew up with it and thus associate the generic robots as being Contra.
The other 2 actually show things from Contra. And between the other two, the Japanese one has the art filling more of the box, but the American one wins due to much better colours.
