Nintendo's Switch online mobile app is a thing. It can be used to do this and that in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and in more recent times NookLink - a companion app for Animal Crossing: New Horizons - got added to it, allowing players to scan QR codes and communicate with friends in-game.
If you still happen to be making use of the NSO application, you might be interested in updating it. According to Perfectly-Nintendo, Nintendo has just updated it to Version 1.7.0. Here are the patch notes:
Various issues are now resolved.
While we can't say what changes have actually been made, we do know the download is around 50 MB. Do you still have this application installed or have you completely forgotten about it? Leave a comment down below.

I use it regularly when playing New Horizons. It’s far easier for me to type messages on my phone than it is to use the on-screen Switch keyboard.
@g_ruz Yeah same here, although I do find it incredibly hilarious how much the chat page looks like it could/should display the chat back to you in app, but instead remains completely empty and useless.
Super Mario Maker 2 and MArio Kart 8 should have had some features there too.
MS have released a beta version of the brand new xbox app, and it's apparently meant to replace the current one. It's missing many features that the current app has, but still has far more features and funtionality than the Switch app.
bring back the list of game you can use voice chat on
What, no stability update?
@Ventilator Right, they should have at least brought back the Mario Kart TV app.
I use it with ACNH, the in game chat is a nightmare so this app has been a definite improvement, otherwise using in game it can feel like it’s taken you a week to write ‘thank you’ during a trade. 🙄
I love the Switch but I hope the next console does online better. I think a good idea would be to do what Sony are doing with the PS5 - add a basic microphone to every controller, that way everyone has voice chat capability by default, no need for a phone app
@g_ruz
Personally, I find it easier to plug in a USB keyboard.
You can only do it in docked mode though.
@brandonbwii Yes. Doesen't make sense that it doesen't have TV Mode.
If this app were for Wii U years ago, it would have had far more content in the app. Nintendo cared more about Wii U releases than Switch releases. Wii U also got way more collector editions on physical games too.
On Switch they mostly abandoned touch screen, Miiverse, Game Statistics and Amiibo support too among other things. Wii U got more new games instead of ports too. Sony were best during PS3 days, but is ignorant like Nintendo when a console sell like hot cakes. Then they don't do a extra effort anymore.

Except for that crucial one; the app is bad.
Does anyone else use a party chat in ps4 while playing online on the switch?
I was having a real problem with those various issues.
@Y2JayRome Nah, Discord is way better.
I forgot the app existed actually... I use Facebook messenger video chat, much simpler
The keyboard function for use with ACNH is useful. I'd love to see them extend that to be able to use your phone's keyboard for typing when sharing photos/videos too. Using the in built keyboard is a drag. I know you can plug in a USB keyboard, but using my phone's would be so much more convenient and portable.
@Ventilator
I completely agree.
Still useless.
The support for Splatoon 2 is very impressive.
The app needs some credits in that way.
@RupeeClock I would totally do that if messages could be longer. But since the character limit is so short, I find it easier to just use my phone since I can easily type on it with one hand.
Watch the next update makes it so that the app only supports Android 5.1 and up... RIP my phone.
@Y2JayRome I've often used PS4 party chat for Switch. I often jokingly than Sony while doing so.
It's still useless you have the extremely tiny handful of games that get any use out of it. And even then, most of that stuff should be on-board the Switch.
@g_ruz Literally the only useful thing they ever had with the app. I use it for the same.
What a complete joke. It shouldn't even be a thing, it should be ON the Switch.
Even then, if the app is TRULY the only option, it should support more games. Nintendo has gotten lazy with system and app support. How about instead of focusing their mobile resources on poorly-made mobile apps, they improve their Switch Online app instead? Geez.
I'm really getting upset with the state of the Switch and its OS by now, here in mid-2020, over three years since the system's launch.
The Switch is behind the Wii U and 3DS in terms of features. When I see potential that could easily be used by the company but is ignored for whatever reason, it just really stinks...I want the best for the Switch
I don't know about any of you, but I hear the NSO app has problems with the voice chat not being stable. That's a disappointment. Discord app support on the console, somehow running in the background on Switch, would be AMAZING, but I don't know if the hardware could handle it (maybe in docked mode?)
