Re: Poll: Why Do You Collect Video Games?

Cotillion

I mostly only keep or buy games from my childhood that I have great nostalgia for. And its a cool novelty thing when my old friends come over, to fire up the old games we used to play in the actual system.
Otherwise, Switch is the only thing I buy physical for now and only then when a game is massive without much replay value to save on space. Otherwise, everything is digital.

Re: Feature: Game Boy Games We'd Love To See On Nintendo Switch Online

Cotillion

The rumour mill is really grinding away on this site.
If it even pans out to be true, there's gonna be some real disappointed people when the games aren't all the big ones people want. Forget most of the 3rd party (especially something with collection potential; re: Mega Man), anything licensed, anything that's has potential remake or re-release potential (Pokemon).

The NES and SNES Online are all but abandoned. Nintendo has all but outright said they don't care about it (they did in a runabout way when they said they weren't doing regular releases for it anymore), and once they get a few gems on them, they're mostly just garbage no one would ever pay for to begin with. So why does anyone think a Game Boy addition would be treated like some carefully curated tribute to the best of the best Game Boy had to offer? We'll get a couple good ones and a bunch of crap tossed in with them.

Re: Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Is "Afraid" Of A Future Without Physical Media

Cotillion

People really need to be more distinct when talking about this. Digital media is not really that different from buying a physical copy. I buy a something digitally, I download it and I have it for as long as I have whatever medium I have stored it on, be it an external drive, card or whatever. Yes, the medium can fail, but so can physical copies. I don't know why people seem to think it stops working when they shut down an online shop. Distribution may stop (just as it does for physical), but you still have your game. The only real big difference between the two is the after-market. Obviously you can't buy or sell digital copies after the fact.
Streaming is a different beast entirely and this is the distinction that should be made here. You have absolutely nothing and are at the mercy of however long a company wants to have something available.

Re: Soapbox: Playdate Sold Out In 20 Minutes - Is It Time For A New Nintendo Handheld?

Cotillion

No, Nintendo is better off this way and not split between trying to manage to separate console lines.
If anything a true portable Switch variant, like a micro, would be the way to go, but the Lite covers a portable pretty good, I think.
I don't even see why people don't consider the Switch to be a "true" handheld. Just because it can hook up to a TV? Or is it just the size of it? It doesn't need a TV and you can take it anywhere.....so what's the issue?

Re: Random: The Internet Reacts To The New Switch OLED Model

Cotillion

@YoungLink64 That's the thing, they wouldn't be happy. 4K and bluetooth....people would rage about Joycons, no folders, no themes, the storage, the colour scheme, the much higher price point for those things, whatever they can. It literally doesn't matter what they would have done or will do. This is the internet and the bashing is what gets attention. Hell, it has an article here to highlight it.

Re: Random: The Internet Reacts To The New Switch OLED Model

Cotillion

I find it hilarious people are upset over rumours and speculation they themselves made up. Nintendo literally said they weren't upgrading the Switch multiple times. And they didn't. They gave it a fresh coat of paint and QoL improvements.

This is also the internet. They could have release a 4K model with bluetooth, mowed your lawn for you whle making you dinner and people would still outrage about something.
This is the age we live in.

Re: Netflix No Longer Works On Wii U Or 3DS, So Where's The Switch Version?

Cotillion

Ugh, I can't imagine using Netflix on either device. The Wii U is painful to use and the 3DS, as much as I love that system, is less than ideal for watching movies or shows.

Even the Switch.........I literally have 15 other devices that can stream Netflix. The Switch is just redundant at this point and wouldn't even get used. Smart TV is by far a better option and even if that isn't, a streaming stick is far better for very little cost (Firestick, Google, Roku, whatever).
The amount of people who only have a Switch as a streaming option must be absolutely miniscule considering you can do it on pretty much everything these days.

Re: Nintendo Fears A Popular ROM Website Could Make A Comeback

Cotillion

It's a losing battle they're fighting, and all they're doing is just trimming the grass in a hayfield.
This isn't how you fight piracy anyway. Despite popular opinion, many people don't pirate games just to get them for free (tho, many others do). Many people pirate them because there is simply no reasonable way to play them in a modern age. The argument of going out and buying a rare system and game from someone else doesn't hold much water here, either, since giving someone else some crazy amount of money doesn't benefit the IP owner either.
It's a weird situation where consumers want a product, want to pay for that product, want to use that product, but the company that owns that product won't provide nor sell it and fights anyone trying to use it.
Game preservation is a key issue here too. Nothing has come even close to preserving old works like the emulation community. There's so many games that would be lost forever otherwise.
Nintendo had the right idea with NSO.....but then fumbled with that. People have to use their previous generation system, that was a monumental failure, to legitimately purchase some of their older catalog. You'd think they'd want people doing this on their current and very successful console.

Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

Cotillion

It's pretty subjective. If I buy a grand, 100 hours long 3D game, then I got a great experience for my $60. But I'm very unlikely to put that kind of time into it again.
If I buy a 2D that's wicked fun for $60, but only takes me 10 hours to beat....that one play through may not have been worth the $60, but I will replay it for years, likely getting more playtime in it than the grand 3D game. If anything, I'll get more fun playtime out of a shorter 2D game.

Re: Former Star Fox Programmer Would Be Interested In Making A New Entry Without The "Gimmicks"

Cotillion

A new Star Fox without forced gimmicks would be fantastic. Nintendo is so contradictory sometimes with kind of thing. Star Fox, F-Zero, Wave Race and others all sit abandoned because they don't have any new gimmicks to force people to use with them, but will churn out Mario, Mario Kart and others with little variance between them.

I don't want new gimmicks or 'unique' ways to play. I just wanna play a new Star Fox with new levels and areas. I just want a new F-Zero with new courses. Some of these franchises are so long since abandoned that online play would be the new 'unique' feature.

Re: Random: Internet Goes Wild Over One Incredibly Small Detail In Metroid Dread

Cotillion

@moodycat While what you say about Samus Returns is true......it's also a remake, that holds pretty true to the source in that regard. Metroid II was very linear and had repetitive Metroid fights (especially the Gammas in II). There was very little backtracking or exploring in the original game. So to say it's not like past Metroid titles isn't accurate, it's very much like a past Metroid game.....the one its remaking. MercurySteam takes some heat for that, but their hands were likely tied in keeping the remake close to the original. I suspect things like the melee counter were born from wanting to add and change things when they couldn't change the format of the original game.
Dread is an original game, so they are likely less tied down and more free to make it more like Super Metroid and Fusion. I think people should hold off judging MercurySteam until we see what they do with an original Metroid game, rather than what they did tied down to remaking a classic.

@Expa0 2D Metroid is traditionally all caves and mechanical corridors. The first 3 games were all underground (a bit of surface in Super, but very little), 4 was limited to a space station. Of course, the Prime games broke from this and had a ton of outside and surface areas.
They will likely have areas like in Super Metroid that change the 'dank cave' look, like Brinstar, which was jungle-esque, but still an underground cave. We've barely seen any of Dread, it's probably not fair to judge it on that point as of yet.

Re: Best Sonic Games Of All Time

Cotillion

Why the distinction and separate spots for 3 and Knuckles? They were meant to be the same game and have been readily available as such since Knuckles locked onto 3.
It really wouldn't change the ratings here, except move others up, but the distinction is bizarre to me at this point.

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Will Have "Various Quality-Of-Life Enhancements", Nintendo Says

Cotillion

This game, along with the DS Zeldas, were the height of what I hated that Zelda became. Forced gimmicks and overbearing tips/help/guidance being the biggest issues (Zelda games seemed to think all players were absolute morons for a while. I've been using bombs for 30 hours now, stop telling me how to use them or thanks for panning over the solution to this puzzle I didn't even have time to look at myself).
I'm still debating whether or not I want to get this port.

Re: Feature: "Samus' Adventure Will Continue" - Metroid Dread Producer On The Series' 2D Revival And Future

Cotillion

@WeilsR They've said an end to a story, not specifically the Metroids. The Metroids aren't the only arc going in the main series. Could be the end of the Ridley, given his presence and impact on Samus. Could be a finality for the Chozo, given we don't know if they are actually extinct or not. Could be the end of the Federation. Could be the end of the Space Pirates.

Re: Super Rare Games Changes Course On Physical-Only "Shorts", Makes Them Timed Exclusives

Cotillion

@Zuljaras That didn't answer the question.
You're right, this isn't the 'old days'. This is the days of convenience and wider audiences. The physical is there for whomever wants it. It's still a limited release. Not releasing digital is just alienating some people, and limiting the amount of people who have access or will want to deal with scalpers, limited preorder windows and whatnot. There's no reason to do this. As is obvious by their quick back-pedaling on it.
Being upset that more people will have access to games is weird stance to take and I don't understand that. It's the same thing when people get upset a game isn't console exclusive. Who cares about that if you have it on the console you want in the format you want?
If you manage to get a physical copy of a limited release game, how is it bad that I bought it digitally and downloaded it? It doesn't decrease the limited availability of the physical. It doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever. So why is that bad?

It just seems like a selfish stance, like "I have it and you can't get it, so haha".

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know If You Would Fork Out $50 For A New WarioWare Game

Cotillion

So $70 for me, for a collection of micro-games? Not likely.

Even still, a poll like this is kinda dumb and oddly specific. Are they gauging whether to bother making it if they cant get the price they want? Or do they have it ready to go and don't know how high they can push the price?
How do I know what I'd pay for a game before seeing it? It could be the best game ever or it could be rushed garbage.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

Cotillion

Games I love or just really fun games I replay often. I couldn't even guess how many times I have played the Mega Man series, Sonic 1-3K, Mario 1-World, Mario 64, Zelda 1-Ocarina and so on.
Clearly I skew to the retro for replays, but I do even more modern ones, like Doom 2016, BotW, Bayonetta, and so on.

Re: Talking Point: amiibo Have Always Been Physical DLC, Skyward Sword HD Is No Different

Cotillion

This isn't DLC or some arbitrary thing like a costume that affects nothing. This is an actual QoL update that affects gameplay, locked behind a $25USD toy - which will substantially more expensive where I live. Not to mention, the toy it's locked behind is a collectors item, limited in quantity and subject to scalpers.
Nintendo is embracing crappy money grab schemes a little too much.
