Bandai Namco, Hasbro, Outright Games and UK developer Coatsink have announced a new Transformers video game, and it's coming to Switch.
Transformers: Battlegrounds will offer both single-player and multiplayer action as Optimus Prime and the Autobots regroup to fight off the menace of the evil Megatron and save planet Earth. There's little info on how the game will play, but it looks like it could have a tactical leaning.
Terry Malham, CEO of Outright Games, had this to say:
The TRANSFORMERS franchise is one of the most enduring and recognizable in the world of entertainment. It’s an honour to work with this beloved universe and these iconic characters to create a new and exciting TRANSFORMERS console game that families can enjoy together.
Mark Blecher, Hasbro SVP Corporate Strategy and Business Affairs, added:
TRANSFORMERS: BATTLEGROUNDS is a new and authentic take on what a TRANSFORMERS video game can be. It’s exciting for us to bring the epic story of the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons to life for a new generation of fans on console.
Transformers: Battlegrounds will launch October 23rd on Nintendo Switch. It's also coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Doesn't look very impressive but I'll keep an eye on it. We're all Transformer geeks in my house and the bit about families being able to play together seems interesting. Doubt this will get much positive reaction though by the looks of it lol.
Ok this doesn't look awful, but I can only see hardcore transformer fans wanting this.
Lol for some reason this makes me think it should be called Transformers 2K Battlegrounds 🤔
Transform and Roll Out!
I'd like to see that Transformers: Devastation game that Platinum developed find its way to Switch. I had some fun with that on PS4. Sadly it looks like Activision's license with Hasbro has expired...
Hard to gauge its quality without seeing gameplay up close and personal
At first I thought Transformers Devastation; but the teaser trailer gives off an almost mobile game like vibe with simplistic gameplay or ripe for micro transactions. Of course this is all speculative, could end up being decent.
Just something about the first impressions I got.
How can you make something so horrible.
Goddamnit. People butcher this license. Make a good game!
I don’t know why someone can’t take IPs like transformers, GIJOE, HeMan,SheRa,Voltron, etc and make good games.
Very disappointed that Dreamworks never leveraged their Voltron or She Ra remakes into games.... those were amazing reboots.
@farmer_humpf I played it in 360, great game! I’d buy a switch port.
Looked at their resume. It ain't great. I get that they can't bring back High Moon, thanks to Activision castrating it, but Hasbro should have worked with a more prominent developer. There's the potential in the franchise for an amazing game, but we've gotten bugger all since Devastation.
Best transformers games I played were the war for cybertron/fall of cybertron ones.
I also liked a random one on iOS that played like fire emblem with a transformers mechanic but I think it’s gone now.
This looks like a teaser trailer from 2000 but it’s long enough to tell that this game will be absolute garbage.
Looks like this could be fun, maybe? As an 80s kid I’m always down for more Transformers stuff. Going to have to keep my eye on this. Not enough here to get a sense of what the gameplay will be like or even genre this will be.
And I agree with everyone above: really wish Devastation could be ported to Switch (although I know it ain’t happening)
@TimboSlice the Voltron game back on the 360 was good fun.
It took My Little Pony's Starlight Glimmer to get me back into the TransFormers, starting with the Beast Wars, which may have been the basis for her scheme to change history for her own personal benefit. Megatron of the Predacons did the same thing by trying to kill Optimus Prime while in Stasis Lock. And lately, I've been buying TransFormers toys and the DVD Box Set of Generation One to get more interested (Ectotron will be on his way, next week). I still have Devastation for the PS4, DLC included.
I can't believe the Cybertron games never got ported to this gen. I never got to play them
@TimboSlice Transformers has had some great games in recent(ish) years with Devastation and the two Cybertron games. Even the Transformers game on PS2 was pretty good. Think there is more they can do with it but it's definitely done a lot better than some similar franchises in terms of games.
I mean the graphics on this one don't look great but seems a little early to say it's "horrible". If it's a strategy game could end up being pretty cool and something a bit different.
Hmmm. Intrigued but also very wary.
A port of Devastation for the Switch would have been a more exciting announcement but hey...
Looks like a mobile game, in graphics and general feel.
How did we go from the Cybertron games and Devastation to this mobile looking game?
my little boy seen this and now my ears are bleeding
The first impression is a bit underwhelming, but I'm intrigued. What kind of game is this, where several transformers are doing battle at different parts of the city? Strategy, maybe? And is this one of those $60 at launch games, or a more indie $20 affair?
I actually like the look and feel of what I saw. I like the idea of driving little cars or planes around a simple town for some faster paced action and then transforming in the middle of it too for some close up action.
@farmer_humpf After the way Activision ended the Cybertron saga it’s not too much of a sad thing they no longer have the license, shame the first two where the best transformers games
i wish hasbro would make a new deal with activation because they've been handling remakes really well and it would be cool to see them remaster wfc/foc
The moment I saw the article tagline, I knew Damien had written it! XD
I'm a big Transformers fan but I can't get behind this without a bit of actual gameplay footage. I't looks like one of those RTS games which I'm not a big fan of so I'll probably give this a pass. What Hasbro needs to do is either port over War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron, and Devastation to the Switch or make sequels to them. Then I'll be really interested. Until then I'll reserve my judgement until proper gameplay is shown off.
Agreed this needs actual gameplay footage (like probably 90-plus percent of new game announcement trailers). For what it's worth, here are some observations and hopes:
1) The art style may look simplistic, but it would go much better with the G1/animated look than a grittier, more photorealistic approach. As for looking "like a mobile game", I can see that, but the proof, as always, will lie in the actual gameplay.
2) I campaigned with Hasbro years ago for a licensed, turn-based tactical game with Transformers and/or G.I. JOE characters, vehicles, etc.. If this ends up being such a game...and if the character rosters and core mechanics are sufficiently deep...it could end up being a really big deal. Having four or five "popular" characters on each side? Kiss of death. If you're going to offer a tactical game of this nature it's the perfect opportunity to get as many of those beloved characters on the map as possible. Don't waste it.
Is this supposed to tie into Cyberverse?
This doesn't look great. Devastation was a great Transformers game, I'd much prefer something along those lines.
Is it too much to ask for just a good transformers g1 game? Realy?
Big TF fan here. Err yeah... this is falling flat over here. Add me to the group of people that want a Devastation port instead.
@farmer_humpf Same with TMNT. But as you said, license expired.
@AtlanteanMan Yup. The gameplay can save this.
I need to see more. That video doesn't really tell me much. Is it gonna be like MUA3 with a ton of characters and you just run around smashing mostly faceless forgettable enemies in a grind-fest?
Or is it more of a real Transformers adventure game?
is this a port of the mobile game? Earth War is okay but I gave up on it years ago.
@graysoncharles ok that's fair, but I still don't see many people other than kids and fanboys buying it.
Again, not a bad game, just an uninteresting one.
