A couple of months ago, we shared a video from YouTube user smackedsam that showed off a fully working, portable Nintendo 64 console design. We thought it was a pretty cool creation at the time, but this new take has taken things up a notch.
Dubbed the 'Slipstream 2' by its creator, the console has received a bit of an upgrade since we last saw it with a new, shiny blue casing, a GameCube control stick, a series of menu buttons along the top, and coloured face buttons reminiscent of the N64's real controllers.
You can check it out for yourself in the video below; smackedsam shows a couple of games running on the system, as well as the Controller Pak slot on the back, headphone jack, and more.
What do you think? Would you like a portable N64 to enjoy at home? Share your thoughts with us down below.

The likeness is uncanny... 😅
In all seriousness it's a wonderful feat. Not that much larger than a Game Boy Advance!
"Is this even legal? What could we do to avoid incurring into Nintendo's wrath?"
"How about we rip off the PlayStation's D-pad instead"
"Brilliant"
lawsuit incoming, everyone duck!@!
Wrong D-pad, dumb button layout and the buttons seem way to cramped. 👎
That damned impressive considering it has an entire N64 inside, an expansion pack, at least some of the innards of a controller and a battery pack!
It looks to be about the same size as my Nomad, I'd happily play on something like that. If only Nintendo could make it happen...
Why aren't these being mass produced? I love N64. I would buy a portable one in a heartbeat.
@HexagonSun likewise, however the N64 had one key feature nearly Every owner utilised. 4 controller ports. N64 was the couch multiplayer King. It's main rival was Micro machines on PS which needed a Multitap.
@HexagonSun That's the correct question!
Imagine a Hyperkin Supaboy 64 or something like that.
worried about the longevity of the system holding the mem and the game ports...
I’d buy this. Yes I would.
Why the hell third party companies like hyperkin for example haven't jumped on this idea is beyond me.
Looks so uncomfortable.
Sucks for the guy that bought his previous iterations on ebay for $1000 each
Amazing! As a kid this would have blown my mind!
But now, it just makes me want N64 games on Switch.
@AlexSora89 Haha yeah. That's because it's a Vita under that thing.
There won't be any legal challenges from NIN since they don't make a portable N64. Alot of Trolls can't seem to stumble over themselves being NintenDoomed fandom. What he is doing is something called Innovation which alot of Trolls seems to forget. He should make this for sale this would insure the Retro games keep stay alive.
Wrong size screen ratio
I could possibly get one if it was official. But if Nintendo didn't approve it then no
With the amount of NES and SNES handhelds there are, I'm, surprised there's no mass market portable N64s especially since the cartridges are slightly more portable than either of those systems.
@Toy_Link I think there are still some copyrights issues for the N64. Another reason why you don't really see any clone systems of the console anywhere.
I feel like, if Nintendo were to push something similar to this to market, it may actually stand a chance. It's something to think about, even if it's unlikely.
@AlexSora89 This is a custom one off, you aren't violating anything so long as you aren't marketing and producing it.
GOD i want one of these
That button layout looks terrible. I'll keep waiting on N64 NSO.
This things pretty cool, but I'm not too sure about that button layout, with the C buttons being offset instead of all in a line with A and B.
@FargusPelagius That's the truth. I have never played as much couch multiplayer as I did with the n64.
There's a few things I don't like about it, like I would have gone with a 4:3 screen from something like the Neo Geo Mini arcade console and done the button layout differently. It definitely looks like a home build deal but a lot better than I could probably do.
This is honestly really tempting given how stingy Nintendo has been with classics (outside of NES/SNES) this generation.
Get the screen ratio correct before anything else surely
@SortingHat I think you're on the wrong site for such rants
Listed on eBay and is gone now.....he/she should make more to sell. This will keep the Retro N64 market going for those wanting to take it on the road.
This is the vintage console every hard core gamer (or any) should invest in before they are long forgotten. Nintendo 64 had a min console which is more like a collectors item compared to something like this modded device. Nintendo should invest in a retro fitted console like this. Unless manufacturers and copyright owners come together to release all game titles on the Nintendo Switch, this is an option Nintendo’s CEO should consider. You see arcade 1 UPS, you see remastered games making way to new consoles, meeting new and old audiences; you don’t see a console like this reviving Nintendo 64, GameCube, maybe even Wii and Wii U licensed games all in one. Having something like this can combat the ever growing world of underground hackers that take it upon themselves to bring games, illegally. Maybe in the near future, instead of Hunting these people down; give them jobs that are tailored for designing all of the games we still love. It would profitable for everyone. I would buy this device, instead of waiting for one of my favorite games as a kid ‘Star Wars’ Rogue Squadron trilogy remastered if not, I would buy all 3 cartridges just for this device (and I’m not favorable to playing the STEAM version of the Rogue Squadron).
I would buy that for $99
can I buy one of them?
