Believe it or not, but it's actually been a few months since we got an update on the development of Bayonetta 3.
In the same GameXplain interview with PlatinumGames, Bayonetta series creator Hideki Kamiya was asked once again how the third entry was going. Kamiya kept it short, according to a translation:
It's going fine.
This follows up on Kamiya's previous comments in May when he said the team was "still hard at work on it" and the game "hasn't been cancelled" despite fans voicing their concerns on social media.
Adding to this, Platinum producer Atsushi Inaba touched on how the pandemic had affected the company:
How much that has impacted our work? I think honestly, that's something that we're going to have to see.
We're working from home, we're trying to do what we can to get to kind of work with this new work style. It's still very early and I think that how well we're able to adapt is really going to show how we can, you know - not with just this situation - but with any other situation to pop up, as a company it's a challenge for us.
Kamiya previously mentioned how Bayonetta 3's development was "going really well" in December last year, "very smoothly" at the start of this year, and then said it was "progressing smoothly" towards the end of February.
What are your thoughts about the latest Bayonetta 3 update? Do you think we'll actually see this game any time soon? Leave a comment down below.

This is the 3rd or 4th time he’s had to clarify this. The media and fanboys on Twitter are constantly pestering developers on the progress of these games. Surely a statement made earlier in the year suffices.
He’s been saying this for over two years with NOTHING to prove it or show for it. No wonder people keep asking for an update on the game, we know nothing about it
Have we been given a single reason to believe otherwise?
Okay... Well, not much else to say. It's not like we have anything else to go on.
Yes, I think we will see more soon. We might have to wait longer than we’d like, but I don’t care. Kamiya and team should take all the time they need.
@ninoishi I think it would be different if it were a team that had proven incapable of delivering good quality product, or an unknown IP. The Bayonetta games, and 2 in particular, are some of the most critical acclaimed action games out there, and they've delivered high quality titles twice.
They don't want to dilute their IP with substandard product, and they've judged the quality of their titles status for delivery internally very well. As long as what's released is moderately well reviewed, it'll probably print money.
TLDR - they've earned the benefit of the doubt.
I give it 3 months before he has to clarify again.
Honestly, I’d rather the game was good than came out earlier. I’m pretty sure we all feel that way. While it would be nice to hear some news, games take a while to develop. Especially with everything going on.
Settle down. It will come out when its ready. Ive still got 1, 2 and astral chain to play first. Even then it will just be part of my backlog
I hate to say this, but... this game is pure smoke. They could at least give us an image of it, something, whatever. So many years since the announcement only to say "it's going fine"...
Screenshots and more news will come... eventually.
As much as I want this game, there's no rush. Though, at this point, some footage would be nice.
What about the Bayonetta mouse pads? Any update on those???
Kamiya's gonna block the whole world if this keeps up.
At least he is communicating.
And at least somebody asked him directly. Feels like no press-outlet has the balls to ask Nintendo whats up.
@Yanina who is that as your avatar? Her eyes are enchanting.

Platinum isn't a huge studio, but they still work on multiple games at a time (Nier Automata, Bayonetta 1+2 for Switch, Bayonetta 1 + Vanquish for PS4/XBO, Astral Chain, The Wonderful 101 Remastered, Bayonetta 3, Babylon Fall).
Don't expect to hear about Bayonetta 3 anytime soon.
@graysoncharles
They announced Bayo 3 so early because they announced Bayo 1+2 for Switch just a few minutes prior back at The Game Awards 2017.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this one of the first Switch games announced? Isn't it also true we've never seen actual gameplay of what Bayonetta 3 looks like?
We'll hear and see a trailer in September, because it will release late October in time for Halloween.
I can't speak for anyone else, but personally, I'm not asking for a 2020 release, just some screenshots.
Bayo 2 was announced in Sept 2012 and was released 2 years later in Sept 2014 (in Japan, Oct elsewhere). After it was announced there were more gameplay trailers, a playable demo, etc. that followed.
Bayo 3 was announced Dec 2017. We're now almost 3 years later with literally nothing since the announcement. I don't think it'll come out before next March.
You can't just keep saying it is going fine and not show us anything. It's been 2 and a half years since it was teased. I understand they had other projects to do but the reason people keep harping on about it is that there has been nothing to show since then.
This guy needs to get the hell off social media. It seems very clear to me that he is bothered by it, and I don't blame him at all. He's a talented developer and he should save himself the stress and drama and leave social media. Just let some intern handle it.
I get why he gets annoyed by getting asked the same question over and over again. But having developed the game for so long, you definitely should have something to show. Show a screenshot or something to show it’s still in development. People will quiet down and you can focus on your work.
Apparently the comment ‘it’s going fine/smoothly/very well’ doesn’t cut it with the fans.
It’s a two way communication street..
I love it! Xxx will look foreward to an update soon xx
The game is done, they're just in talks with Yetee on how else they can screw European fans besides import taxes and incomplete forms.
@graysoncharles actually it was a smart move to announce Bayo 3 at that time. I personally never played 1 & 2, so I was curious and bought them on Switch. I guess a lot of people did. So it's not comparable to the time of Bayo 1 or 2.
Also, because Nintendo should have some right on Bayo 3, it could be they Pushed Platinum to tease Bayo 3 to fire up Switch sales. That's also why I don't think The vents money will go into this project, because it's Nintendo owned now, why would Nintendo share the cake with Tencent?
@Yanina thank you very much.
@graysoncharles Nintendo is supplying the budget for Bayonetta 3 so that’s not a problem. The deal with Tencent was struck so they could open a studio in Tokyo and start publishing their own titles (which they got off to a poor start with)
Needless to say- I’m pumped to play BAYONETTA 3- Platinum Games can take all the the time they need to finish it. I’m sure it’ll be a treat once released. The people whining about it are just acting like spoiled children...
I’m hoping it will be exclusive to Nintendo because I played the first 2 on Switch and feel that if it’s also on Playstation and Xbox then the switch version will be below par (like Outer Worlds)
This and Metroid Prime 4 are perfect examples of why games shouldn't be announced so early in development
I think Platinum is aiming to make their best game so far, and don't wanna rush it out.
@carlos82 Platinum would still be nagged about Bayonetta 3 even if it weren't anounced.
this game better be good
Since when did fans become share holders or editors (in the literary sense)?
It baffles me to here people saying they should do this or that and show ‘us’ blah blah blah.
They will make the game as they see fit, to the best of their ability. It will be released and people can buy it if they want to play it.
Creators don’t want to be hassled and be showing their audience unready stuff that isn’t going to be representative of the finished product - same for any creative endeavour.
Fans can be a great asset to a company, but not when mania and the thirst for new stuff becomes a distraction. Fans getting into the mindset of ‘we make you, we pay your wages, do what we want’ is bull - if they make great stuff, people will buy it.
@ninoishi Why should they though? Asserting this kind of mindset IMO shows the lack of patience of an individual. Was there a universal rule to show a development in-progress game every half-year or so? For kickstarted games, sure why not. The problem in this industry is that we gamers feel so entitled these days. And yes, I think it was perfectly fine they announced a sequel some time ago. A 4-5 year dev cycle is normal these days. At least they gave us something to look forward to. As with other software projects, they'll reveal it WIR. There are titles that went on for years and turned out fine (though I don't consider Square-Enix games in that category 😉).
Maby a smt situation.dropping it in a partner direct when they are ready for it
By now we need some footage and screenshots.... While I don't expect the game anytime soon it's fair to be kept in the loop with an update..
Dagnabit, Kamiya, don't you see we're starving for the game here? People have long beaten Switch's entire library of thousands and are morosely replaying Bouncy Bob as we speak. Is this a proper way to treat an elite societal segment like fans?
Kek, stop pestering him folks, seriously. No, you don't need to be kept in the loop. If Platinum Games don't feel it is polished or complete enough to show off, they shouldn't show it off. And since we have nothing, it isn't, and that's that.
Just chill on this one. They, of all companies, have a great track record.
I still think people should leave him be and stop asking, but I completely sympathize with their doubt on the matter. Even just sharing some character art would be nice, these short reassurances aren’t doing him any favors at this point.
They should never have announced it so early, Astral Chain was announced and released in that time. As much as I want to believe it's all fine I'm having serious doubts now.
A friend and I joked that Bayo 3 had to follow the trend and become a map mopping open world. I'm beginning to think we were closer to the mark than we realise. This game has fallen into development hell territory in my opinion.
This and Metroid Prime 4 have become the biggest let downs this gen for me. They were the two games I was most looking forward to on the switch and both have now taken so long the games could never live up to the hype they've generated. I'm trying to stay positive about them both, but in reality I'm preparing to be let down.
They’re working in Witch Time. I get the feeling when they announced it, they hadn’t even started the game. When you see the grief a company gets for announcing a game and then showing nothing for a time, you can see why Nintendo has recently tried to avoid announcing things until a few months in advance.
We really need to dial back the early hype on everything.
@NotTelevision I expect it's due to what happened with Scalebound.
"It's going fine" is what we've been hearing for months now. I hope he's right as I can't wait to play Bayonetta 3.
At first when I read the title of the article I was worried, but then I saw the ass and wasn't worried anymore.
@ninoishi You aren't owed an update, or even a game for that matter, you haven't put money down on anything. Just give them some time and peace to make the game the best it can.
@TheDavyStar never claimed I was owed anything! I’m just pointing out hes been claiming its been going well for a long time and we haven’t seen anything yet
I have just cancelled my pre order, will await it's release along with hopefully positive reviews then depending upon the review's may pick it up.. Can't say fairer than that!!
Wow getting a lot of articles about how a games development is going fine. Is it news anymore after the first?
Lil, "its fine" sits back, grabs a coffee and reads the comments"
Same song and dance as before, no actual news other than yet another confirmation that development is going well.
Let's just stop asking and let them share news, whether it's good or bad, whenever they're good and ready to do so.
@graysoncharles
They have no budget for Bayonetta 3? Why would you think that? I'm pretty sure Nintendo is paying for it.
@Old-Red
What exactly made you get so hyped about Bayonetta 3/Metroid 4 that it could never live up to that hype?
It would help if we got some screenshots or at least told what makes this game different and interesting in its own right.
Let us know when it’s done, otherwise I don’t need a story every few weeks about how it’s “still progressing.”
I have a feeling its going well
You know what really motivates and helps me at work? When someone is constantly over my shoulder badgering me about how it's going, how long it's going to be and wanting an update every 30 seconds.
People just need to leave all these developers alone and let them update when they're ready to say something.
@MrBlacky
They are two of my favourite series and I couldn't wait for them to come out. Now so much time has passed my excitement has waned.
That's what they said about Pikmin 4.
No demo or trailer to show progress???
@ninoishi it's just a case of it being announced too early. There's every possibility that development on the game hadn't even begun when it was announced. People forget that Platinum is a developer roughly the size of Sony Santa Monica, except the former is a) independent, and b) cranks out multiple titles a year.
again the same excuse Platinum Games is giving when asked about the progress of Bayonetta 3, i'm tired of hearing/watching the same excuse Platinum Games give us about the progress of Bayonetta 3, give us already a gameplay trailer for Bayonetta 3, it have been 3 years since Bayonetta 3 have been anounced and we still don't have a single gameplay trailer for the game.
I'll believe it when I see it.
One thing Platinum should be pleased about is all these comments, it ultimately shows that we care about the game... Imagine this article with 2 or 3 comments, what would Platinum think then...
@jtmnm yes Bayonetta 3 along with Metroid Prime 4 was one of the first Switch games anounced for Switch, Metroid Prime 4 at E3 2017 with it development restarted in january of 2019 now with Retro Studios working on the game, and Bayonetta 3 anounced at TGA 2017 with a teaser and 3 years later and a lot of statment saying the development is progressing well, still not a gameplay trailer for Bayonetta 3.
@PokeNerd2499 me too, Kideki Kamiya and others members of Platinum Games have given several times the same excuse/statment that the development of Bayonetta 3 is progressing well, 3 years we don't have any information beside the development is progressing well, is about we have at least a gameplay trailer/release date for the game.
if this was another game I might be worried.
But this is exactly what happened with Bayonetta 2. It was revealed super early in the Wii Us life and ended up as one of the last big games on the machine.
Guys leave the dev in peace, Platinum does good work. Bayo 3s announcement was to bring the hype! Yes it’s been awhile now and we haven’t seen a thing on it but with a pandemic going on and E3 having not happened this year. I imagine we’ll have a delayed trailer with a possible release date on it.
Platinum did a game this year and it’s not too often they pump out 2 games a year if we see Bayo 3 this year it’d be incredible but I’m leaning more towards next year.
Bayonetta 3 won't come out till the switch pro at least. Cause we all know next gen is on the way and the last thing platinum games don;t want is it looking bad compared to the competition. Having said that if it comes before a switch pro it will sell like hot cakes and be praised for having some of the best graphics on switch.
Lmao, they’ve been saying this for almost 2 years now. They announced way too early.
Probably due to the switches technical limitations, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was being held back for the Switch 'Pro' (or whatever it'll be called)
@nhSnork @Zyph Are you fans as well? Perhaps labeling all those who enjoy a game as problematical is more reflective of the individual critic than the group being critiqued. It's difficult for me to attack fans in general when I consider games like Sonic Mania, Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge and many more.
Kamiya and I have one thing in common - Ignoring those who have nothing to add save a childish demand for news. Threads like this improve the signal-to-noise ratio for me...
If you mean a Bayonetta fan then yes. I'm just saying impatience won't get anyone anywhere. I don't remember labeling anyone problematical though.
Anticipation is a good thing but like any other company they owe us nothing until we set some money down like someone said here. We enjoy the games we want to enjoy. But pestering others for updates just for that isn't exactly enjoyable to the ones making it. Not really a fan of "hey you do your job quickly so i can enjoy stuff! who cares what your situation is!"
Just my opinion, as of course you and others have as well. Usually I myself ignore stuff like this but hey I'm bored
PS. I'm pretty sure blocking people on twitter every hour every day and being vocal to the community to stop asking for Bayonetta updates is far from "ignoring". But hey to each their own.
I feel this game will end up cancelled
People need to just be patient. Video games take a long time to develop especially good ones. Just let them take their time on it rather than trying to rush it or have bad work practices like crunch.
I'm sure it is going fine it's just that no one is really actually working on it.
Heh heh, just let the man work....
At the end of the day, why care? It's not like none of us has nothing else to play, watch, read, make or do until Bayonetta 3 comes out. I have a 256GB memory card full of Switch games I've mostly not finished, along with a Game Pass subscription, a job and God knows what else to occupy my time. Personally, I'll live if Bayonetta 3 takes a while.
I’d rather they take their time. I haven’t even played 2.
I played the first one on Xbox 360 (it was one of the last 360 games I purchased before I traded it for a PS3) and absolutely adored it.
The issue is that I have more than a few games in my Switch backlog to finish. Dragon Quest XI, Pokemon Shield (I’m not at the post game yet and haven’t even played the DLC I bought), Celeste, and a few others. Plus Fortnite sucks up a lot of my free time every week. So much so that I’ve actually assigned myself a calendar to rotate the games properly.
Now can we get SOMETHING on BOTW 2's development?? Please, Nintendo?
He's a known troll that is most likely doing this because gamers keep pestering him about the game. I'm glad he doesn't appease those people and does what he wants.
I've been like, "Whatevs" for as long as Bayonetta 3 was teased. Prove it.
@mazzel who owns what now? Nintendo doesn’t own Bayonetta
@diwdiws Nintendo has the publishing rights since Bayo 2
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/02/platinumgames_wants_to_bring_the_complete_bayonetta_series_to_other_platforms
"The original game was published by Sega on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and was later ported to the Wii U and Switch. For the sequel, Nintendo stepped in to provide funding and therefore owns half of the IP. The third Bayonetta game is currently in development for Switch, and Nintendo is again funding development."
@mazzel publishing rights just mean that, publishing rights. The IP, Trademark belongs to SEGA. In fact they just renewed it. Its just that SEGA doesnt want to foot the bill for development. SEGA can decide to make Bayo 4 a PS exclusice if it wants to.
@diwdiws you are right for the name. No one can use the name, assets etc. without SEGAs permission. As long as Nintendo is pouring money in the game development, I'm sure they have actually power to decide some things on the games itself (Bayo 2 and now 3).
That was my point. So Nintendo has some right over Bayo 2 and Bayo 3 and therefore own parts of it. Maybe not the name, but the game. Holding the publishing rights is light owning the certain game, it just prevents you from doing any sequels without the Trademarks holders approval.
@diwdiws Sega, as with Nintendo have just publishing rights for the game they published. aka Sega = Bayonetta 1, Nintendo= Bayonetta 2 and 3.
Platinum decides if she wants to make a Bayonetta 4, to whom it may end up. Just that.
argh... can people just ... wait ?
@Flugen SEGA owns boyenetta, Nintendo only has publishing rights since they funded its development for Bayo 2 and 3. The IP and Its corresponding trademark Is owned by SEGA and was in fact renewed by them just this January. Platinum is just a hired developer, they have no say or any right to the Boyonetta IP. So if ever SEGA decides to make Bayo 4 a xbox or PS exclusive Nintendo and Platinum has no right to object to it.

@idrawrobots "Bayonetta 3 canceled" is a recommended Google search. As of October 30, 2020. It worried me for a minute until I saw this article.
