Re: Review: Blasphemous - A Nightmarishly Good Mix Of Metroid And Dark Souls

Cathousemaster

I'm definitely keen on this, but from what I've read this is not a 9 by any accounts. Maybe a very generous 8, probably a fairer 7 (or 7.5). No Minimap, poor audio, lack of quest log, some confusing quests ... And I'm not a fan of the art style. Also read about issues with the controls during some of the wall jumping areas. Biggest issue though is reports of crashes ... I have no tolerance for crashes in modern console games.

Doesn't matter to me - but have a massive backlog and I haven't played dead cells - it's better than this.

Final concern - I'm fine with the subject matter, but I'll have to keep this away from my kids. And definitely my wife.

Re: Review: Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - A Painfully Incomplete Version Of An N64 Classic

Cathousemaster

I played turok 1 to death and completed it. I remember playing it on a huge TV and projector, which made it unbearable for everyone else watching it...

Turok 2 got off to a good start, but then I stopped playing it for some reason. I have a vague memory of inst-death from getting too close to the edge of a swamp...

This required the RAM hardware expansion for the N64, right? Or does my memory fail me?

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 Sold 2.42 Million Copies In Just Three Days

Cathousemaster

It's a nice headline, but it's completely wrong.

Nintendo makes money selling games to retailers - wholesale shipments.

These shipments are ordered weeks if not months in advance. So it's hardly 3 days of sales.

This represents the first shipment of MM2 at retailers ... Not 3 days of sales to consumers. No doubt it sold well, but not this well.

Re: Despite Increased Sales, Nintendo's Year-On-Year Profits Have Almost Halved

Cathousemaster

@Matroska you have to dig into those figures. Sales for PlayStation and network and down. Operating income for the same is down 15%. They also lost a bit on Forex.

They had a good quarter because imaging (camera) is up, and music is up. Sony is still a huge company, and PlayStation is just a fraction of it.

Nintendo made a lot on Forex last year for this qrt. That's why it's a poor comparison for this qrt. Got to pay the piper sometime...

Re: Despite Increased Sales, Nintendo's Year-On-Year Profits Have Almost Halved

Cathousemaster

This is still a good result, for the quietest qrt of the year, with only a single major release.

The operating profit is actually down 10% which reflects the investments in the new SKU and software products.

There is very little Nintendo can do about the currency losses - given the current insanity in the US, Brexit in the UK, and instability in other parts of Europe - this is a very decent result.

They are nicely setup to have a massive 3rd qrt and lead into a boom period in Xmas.

Re: You'll Need A Bethesda Account To Play DOOM And DOOM II On Switch

Cathousemaster

@sanderev I can't say I agree, but it might come down to how you define DRM. This is available as a physical release I believe, so multiple people who use the cartridge will register. You can also play offline, and there is no link between the email address and Nintendo or the game.

That's not DRM in my books - it has nothing to do with the digital access or rights for the game. It's just a way to build a marketing list.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem: Three Houses - The Zenith Of A Legendary SRPG Series

Cathousemaster

Given how much I have played Fire emblem games in the past (finished awakening on lunatic mode, which was really hard) I was always going to get this.

My biggest criticism with previous FE games was they turned into a "tank build". You built a super strong Knight, stuck them at the front of the battle, and enemies would swarm them like flies. Every enemy would attack, dish 0 damage, and then die on the counter. This then made the tank stronger. You also used them to physically block the path and just manipulate the ai. In the end you wanted to stop the tank from countering at all...

This continued through most of the game, and allowed you to gradually level up your other characters until magic or super strong enemies started. In awakening, you ended up with a magic tank which made things worse.

I'm not going to miss the sword / axe / Lance system ... Although it helped prevent the tank issue to some degree.

I'm playing xeno at the moment, and only 70hrs in ... So I'm going to hold off on this until I'm done with that. Which could be 6 months at this rate ... .

Certainly no lack of games to play....

Re: New Standard Nintendo Switch Revision Offers Significantly Improved Battery Life

Cathousemaster

Companies revise components and silently upgrade revisions all the time. Don't be shocked.

Are people complaining about better battery life?

Even the lite has slightly better battery life. The selling point of the lite is purely the cheaper price, and possibly the simpler form factor. If you have the money a real switch is always a better product.

Joycons have batteries which are recharged from the main battery, the power management for the full switch is quite different from the lite.

Re: Review: Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda - A Beat-Based Wonder

Cathousemaster

@roadrunner343 I'm confused now:
"The overworld, too, is randomly generated from a seed that's different in every save file."
So it's random, but stays the same across deaths? So you need to complete it, and start a new game to get a new overworld?
That sounds much less rogue like and much more Zelda like...

I recently grabbed and finished Minit, and although it's short it was definitely worth the price ... And it's quite a different game. Didn't get everything and took me about 5hrs to finish ... But the second run through on hard is already looking much, much harder.

Re: Nintendo Comments On Animal Crossing Delay, Says Employee Work-Life Balance Comes First

Cathousemaster

In Japan, they already work far too hard. This is a delay of 1Q hardly that significant ... And it gives animal crossing some clean air to work in.

Re: work life balance ... This is Nintendo. This is not some external team bound by some dodgy contract, rather people that work there for life.

When its the same people that develop and publish the game, this is the expected outcome.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Ponders A Witcher 3 Switch Port

Cathousemaster

Watched the video and this is a pointless comparison. Because it won't be the PC version - they can change the core code, change the way loading works, change the underlying rendering engine, change the assets and so on.

Based on what I saw this is totally achievable. Witcher is about the story and the game over the graphics. And it might still lead into the higher spec'd switch hardware.
