UK chart data is now in for the week ending 27th July, revealing that Fire Emblem: Three Houses has had a tremendous first week on sale which sees it comfortably sitting a number one.
The game sits just ahead of Bethesda's Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which also debuted this week. Christopher Dring of GamesIndustrybiz reports that Three Houses sold almost double the number of copies achieved by Fire Emblem: Awakening in its opening week back in 2013, and more than double the combined sales of the first two Fire Emblem Fates games.
He also notes that Three Houses achieved more than double the boxed sales of Wolfenstein: Youngblood, showing just how strong that number one position really is.
Here's a look at this week's top twenty all formats chart:

If I didn't have so many Switch games waiting in my SD Card to be played, I would've got this Day 1.
Darn you weekly Switch eShop discounts.
No doubt this will be the best selling in the franchise. And deservedly so.
Seven of the top ten games of the week are available on Switch. Top game is a Switch exclusive.
That's impressive for the UK, I think, which is one of Nintendo's weaker markets.
This is the uk charts.
I had to double check
When I went to pick up my preordered copy on Friday I was told there were stock shortages so this means the game outsold Nintendo's expectations.
Wow, I expected Fire Emblem to be a fan favourite, glad it’s also a hit.
So happy to see Fire Emblem doing so well. Seems crazy to think Nintendo were ready to pull the plug if Awakening didn’t improve the sales figures in previous entries.
Good to see this debuting so high.
About 20 hours in, and so far enjoying every second. I love the new gameplay changes such as how magic now works and when weapons break, you are not left defenseless. The teaching is surprisingly enjoyable as well as roaming the monastery. Quite enjoying the characters too. Story wise, I have so many questions but hopefully I'll find some answers soon.
Good, it's superb
This was the first game I pre ordered in ages. I think the last game I pre ordered was Project Zero the maiden of black water.
Never got in to Fire Emblem, just can't get get on with SRPGs, no good at tactics, but well done them
In years gone by, how often could you say that thirteen of the top twenty UK games would be on a Nintendo console?!
A short public service before someone says “ah another first party Nintendo game selling well. What a surprise, no good support for third party games from Nintendo fans, Wolfenstein a failure.
Still Fire Emblem is a handheld/mobile game and Switch is a handheld/mobile platform not a console so it’s not really a surprise...”
Honestly. If that was going to be the gist of your post then please save time and just @ this comment. Thanks!
More positively though I’m surprised that Switch is doing so well here.
Even at the height of the Wii and DS it was unusual to see so many games that can be played on a Nintendo platform in the top 10 in the UK. Time of year plays a part in that with it being very quiet from the AAA part of the industry but still...
Also MK8 in the top 10 always indicates that hardware sales are still going well here.
@StuTwo
Who made you comment god?!
I actually don't agree with those views but people have the right to say it and you have no right to deny them that.
Get over yourself.
On topic: Very good week for the Switch and Nintendo, the UK could maybe start to be considered a decent market for them now.
And as always Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a beast!
That's actually very impressive.
Isn't Youngblood a multiplatform release? Or did the other platforms launch earlier? How does fire emblem on the switch outsell a shooter on the PS4, xbone, PC & switch?
I have never seen Nintendo do so well on the UK charts, and I have been following them for 20 years...
Remember when Nintendo went about 6 years without getting a number 1 on the UK charts? Now it seems like the majority of their first-party releases get there. It's amazing how well the Switch is doing worldwide.
Awesome to see this! I got my copy on Friday afternoon, and am loving the game so far - it definitely deserves the top spot. I still can’t believe it managed to sell more than Wolfenstein in the UK, though - shooters on PS4/XbOne are all the rage here!
@SBandy Of course people can hold and express their own opinions. I've explicitly (in my role of "comment god") given them the opportunity to express their opinions. I've just allowed them to save a bit of time by posting it up there so they don't have to waste their time (or anyone else's).
"Charts" (particularly charts such as these without real numbers attached to them and particularly when we know that they mostly exclude digital sales) tell us very little either way. Even the Japanese charts that do have numbers tell us very little. We simply don't know the true expectations, sales projections and success criteria from the developers and publishers to know whether a game debuting at "number 1 in the charts" is successful or not.
Take FIFA for instance. I am certain that FIFA has sold a lot of copies on Switch - the charts over time and the retail presence would suggest this to be the case. But EA clearly considers it to be a failure. Of course EA makes more money from FUT than it does from sales of FIFA itself so their success criteria aren't necessarily how many boxed copies they sell.
Conversely Fortnite appears to have been successful on Switch. I can certainly see on my friends list play activity that some players have put in hundreds of hours on Switch. But it would never appear on a best sellers list because it's digital only and has a price of £0.
Trying to extrapolate where Nintendo sits in the marketplace from these charts in 2019 is honestly a waste of time. But still we see, week after week, the same one or two names in the comments to sales charts articles on this site sagely informing us that they've sifted through the tea leafs and telling us that they've read "Nintendoomed" in them.
Amazing! If my backlog wasn’t so large I would have bought it already
It will definitely be the best selling FE game so far and by far and will be the first FE to hit 3 million and more (last record FE Fate with 2.85 million)
@StuTwo
That is all well and good but at the end of the day people can comment what they want and you are no authority to tell them they can't.
@SBandy Of course they can and at no point have I ever denied anyone's ability to speak for themselves if they so wish to do so. They can save time by just announcing that what I originally posted is pretty much the gist of what they were going to post (regardless of the actual content of the article though). Which was my suggestion.
I do believe that many people have however confused the right of free speech with the right to be heard and the right to dictate the tone and direction of a public debate in their own favour. I don't claim to have that right either but sometimes when you see an opportunity then why not have a go?
The game is a masterpiece. I don’t know what else to say.
This game is going to end up doing 4-5 million lifetime, given Fates dang near sold 3 million.
On the other hand I'm glad that Awakening got knocked off its pedestal, but on the other hand 25 hours in this game really isn't hitting the right notes for me as a Fire Emblem game.
15 of the top 20 available on switch (more than any other consoles)
2 of the top 5 and 8 of the top 20 are Nintendo exclusives
This is amazing for Nintendo in the UK
Also notice that from this data, FE awaking opening sales would have been enough to seat in the number one spot this week
Fire Emblem UK launch week retail sales:
** Does not include sales of the Birthright/Conquest Special Edition bundle.
All other Fire Emblem games that Nintendo bothered to release in the UK struggled to sell much more than 1,000 copies at launch.
Fantastic - Playing Wolfenstein at home and Fire Emblem on the GO. Best gaming combo in months.
"more than double the boxed sales of Wolfenstein: Youngblood"
Yeah, but tons of thosse sales allow 2 people to play via the buddy system. Basically cutting the need to buy the game in half.
The F1 race this weekend in Germany was amazing!. Hopefully that will help F12019 sales for another week. Great racing game.
@JaxonH I love the game so far but I wouldn't really call it a 'masterpiece'. For one the graphics are awful in pretty much every aspect, looks like a cross between an N64 and early GC game. Can be really jarring sometimes and yanks me right out of the experience.
That's pretty impressive, especially for the UK! I already put wayyy too much time into it over the weekend, but I'm loving every minute
@StuTwo
Because you sound like a tool. And you do by the way.
I'm on the fence. I love old school FE and Awakening is one of my favorite games ever. The 'Hogwarts' thing turns me off though and in the NL review he says it takes up the first dozen hours or so. I kept reading to hear what comes after that but they never said. Do you eventually leave the monastery and do the students become enemies or something? What else does it have to offer story wise after the school segment?
@SBandy I’m sorry am I supposed to “feel the burn” at this point?
Because when people start chucking out insults instead of addressing points in a civil fashion I think we’re finished aside from deciding who’s “won”.
@Mogster haven’t bought the game, but from what I saw from trailers, the game’s not pushing the hardware at all. Are the textures on the building really that flat throughout the game? That’s an
Actual question.
@StuTwo
No burn, just describing how you have come across to me with your previous comments.
If people want to make their own observations that may align with what you have previously described they are free to do it and then you or me or anyone can challenge them on it, have a discussion with them.
They don't have to abide by your set of rules.
Nintendo games are selling well in the UK right now, with stronger launches and long-tail performance.
It is worth noting that chart positions today vs previous generations are not really worth the comparison. Nintendo Switch games (and I’m talking AAA here) are not as strong digitally as PS4/Xbox One. This is partially due to the Nintendo audience, the lack of console hard-drive space and the general cost of goods.
In other words, it’s a little easier for Nintendo to score No.1s these days than in previous years.
The important stat is how well the game is performing vs previous titles in the same series. And as you can see, there’s been some decent growth.
@Mogster
Thats a pretty wild exaggeration. They’re not that bad. They might not win any awards but it looks good enough. In fact, during battles in map view, I’d even say the graphics look really impressive.
Even so, The game doesn’t have to be perfect to be a masterpiece (no game is perfect). The biggest complaint I have with the game is that some of the still images look low res during supports, and a few frame stutters when spinning the camera fast in the monestery.
Aside from that, 10/10. Music is perhaps the best soundtrack of any video game I’ve played in my entire life. Voice acting is excellent... just top notch. World building and dialogue is incredible. Gameplay is immaculate. Story is extremely well done and thoroughly engrossing.
This will most definitely end up on my fave games of all time list, right alongside Metroid Prime Trilogy, Monster Hunter World, Final Fantasy X, Xenoblade X and Zelda Breath of the Wild.
Picked up my special edition pack for Fire Emblem! At the time I was super excited to have secured a pre-order and now that I have it I'm very impressed with just how good it is. I'm also incredibly surprised Nintendo even bothered to release a special edition here in North America, given that they seem to only shower Europe and Japan with love these days. So far, addicted to the game and loving the story.
@SBandy if you (or anyone else) want to think I’m a complete tool that’s completely fine. You’re free to think what you like.
If anyone wants to engage with what I’ve actually said then I’m sure they’re grown up enough to do so themselves.
As to the rules of polite public discourse and debate well that’s a discussion for another time and place. But suffice to say - if someone doesn’t want to play by my rules then it’s a big world and there are plenty of other people they can choose to talk to. I don’t have to listen to them.
Which is to say - if you don’t like me then you certainly have the freedom to ignore me. The site even has an option that lets you do that! I post little here but if you don’t like the things I have to say or the way in which I say them then I wouldn’t be at all offended if you add me to your ignore list.
@JaxonH Small digression, but how can Metroid Prime trilogy be your favourite game when it has Metroid Prime 2 holding it back?
@StuTwo
"if someone doesn’t want to play by my rules"
That is why I think you are a tool in this instance. I won't be putting you on ignore though as you don't seem too bad when all is said and done.
@SBandy I’m well aware that it sounds selfish. However we live in a world where there are more things to see and do and people to talk do all from the comfort of my sofa and my time is precious to me. If someone wants to engage me in a two way conversation then they have to accept that from the beginning - and that means my rules are prominent. Otherwise I can very easily shrug my shoulders, laugh and go do something else.
Posting here is not a matter of life and death.
Anyway. I think we’re done with reasonable civility. You do add to the site and I’m glad you post here.
For what it’s worth I have no one on my ignore list but I would honestly encourage anyone who finds the site less enjoyable for seeing my posts to add me. I don’t post much, you hardly miss anything by missing me and - as I say - life is too short.
@Hoho
Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite one! I was gonna just say Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, but the trilogy is better just because it has that game and 2 others.
And in any Trilogy, by default one game has to be the worst of the three. But even Metroid Prime 3, the weakest link, it’s still a better game than 99.5% of all other games I’ve played.
I expected this to do pretty well in the UK charts, but this has even exceeded my expectations! From the reviews and feedback I've seen so far, this position seems more than deserved.
I really wish US figures were available weekly and not just once a month when the NPD results float in.
@invictus4000 The first part is always in the monastery. after that, you wont be in it as much as before. i wont explain why because I'd spoil the whole plot that way lol
@JaxonH don’t read this assuming a sneering inflection but I’ve played them all twice; I just finished off echoes yesterday. I would say that echoes in theory should be up my alley, but I think it’s too hostile in its game design.
A lot of the bog standard expansions are contested by irksome enemies; said enemies such as the Ing hunter have far too many invincibility frames.
I would also argue that the motion controls in echoes feel sluggish(or fiddly).
The sky Temple keys are padding as is dark aether due to the fact that your moving through what amounts to the same area 4 times.
The Hydrodynamo chamber(underneath Torvus bog) is a chore, on account of the water, and the amount of items you don’t have but are required for full probing (like power bombs, and the grappling hook, as well as the annihilator.
I’ll infer that the level design isn’t intuitive on account of how often I was on the map screen just for basic retraversal which wasn’t the case for super Metroid which I just played prior.
I have a bunch other complaints, such as that dreadful and dull spider guardian boss, but whatever
Quadraxis is perhaps one of the greatest Metroid bosses.
Also corruption is great to play immediately following echoes, but otherwise does lack something.
As a thought experiment what are your thoughts on games like Zero mission and Link Between Worlds?
@Hoho I know you weren't replying to me, but I would just like to say that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is also my favorite of the trilogy as well.
@Hoho
Link Between Worlds is my favorite Zelda behind BotW. Never played Zero Mission.
But ya, love MP2. I hear a lot of people complain about it being tedious but I take an approach to games where I just take my time and enjoy it. And I don’t think I enjoyed either of the other games as much as the second.
@AnnoyingFrenzy that’s fine; I’m talking about Metroid in a fire Emblem article. There are much worse games out there than echoes but I stated my reasoning behind my irritation with it above. I actually believe that all the prime games have a fundamental flaw unique to each one. I think the first is the best one though; how much better is it than the others, couldn’t quantify.
I hope Nintendo respects us buyers (I've got a copy in the mail) by boosting the frame rate to 60fps! Please patch in a performance mode like Fire Emblem Warriors has! Or at least patch it to run perfectly at 30fps! Pretty please!
@JaxonH That’s an odd answer for my thought experiment in that I find Link Between World’s is diametrically opposed to echoes, in that one is unyielding(I think tedious is the wrong word) and the other is far too accommodating to the point of being dull and lacking bite and yet you love both, whereas I have problems with Echoes and borderline hate LBW.
@Grumblevolcano can confirm.
Our local game supplier mentioned they were stock shortages. Everything available sold out on pre-sale.
Wanted to get a special edition, but by the sound of it, it would be hard...
Still, minor setbacks aside, nice to see the game is selling well.
Now to wait for the DLC...
This means more FE characters in Smash, right?
Great to hear this! I was personally scared of the school part in this game but after playing it my fears are gone, this game is GREAT!
The petty selfish useless part of me is very happy to see a Fire Emblem title beat a Wolfenstein title.
For comparison's sake, Fire Emblem Three Houses launch sales were roughly on par with that of Devil May Cry V.
The game is also experiencing some serious stock issues. Sounds like digital sales will be abnormally strong for this game (which is typical for Fire Emblem games; Awakening had a 30%+ digital attach rate in the US at launch, back in when the digital attach rate for games rarely ever exceeded 10%).
Go Fire Emblem!
Good, now release the Skinship mini-game as DLC just like how Xenoblade 2 released the Swimsuits as DLC.
DO IT! DO IT!
I'm thinking of getting Fire Emblem but I've not really got into the series before. It does look to be quite overwhelming with all the stuff to do around the meat of the game. May take the plunge but i already have a backlog and Astral Chain on pre-order next month as well as some great games coming in September,not sure I'd finish it Glad its selling well
