Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

Cathousemaster

3 houses gave us a game within a world. Something with real meat. Lots of story and lots of combat.

I completely ignored engage from the outset. It seemed like a set of combat missions, and I'm not interested in mashing characters from older fire emblem games.

In a world where there are heaps of great games to play, I'm not going to spend full price on this type of "mission pack" game.

On a side note I was amazed that Metroid prime remake is $60 ... But the Mario RPG and TYOD paper Mario are both $80 (Aust). Remakes or not, that is crazy pricing.

Really enjoyed and finished the first game, and the kids enjoyed it as well.

The lower difficulty is a huge turnoff, especially if this becomes a rinse-and-repeat strategy that works everywhere...

... But that might be perfect for the kids.

Will get it eventually. Still working through la-mulana 2 (trying to minimise the guide, but man...), barely started XC3, and haven't touched Splatoon which the kids are enjoying...

Re: Nintendo Is Apparently Not Involved In The New Switch DRM Initiative

Cathousemaster

Anyone defending emulation clearly doesn't understand how it absolutely leads to piracy, purely because of the mechanisms involved.

As far as this DRM system goes, it could be as simple as performing real world timing on critical sections of code or graphics routines. If it runs too fast or to slow ... It may not be real switch hardware.

This is risky though, as it may not work on an updated switch model either, and may need to be patched.

Re: Review: Iconoclasts (Switch eShop)

Cathousemaster

Looks like I never posted here.

Gave the game a go about a year ago, and it's truly amazing ... In unexpected ways. The story is amazing and the game is heaps of fun, challenging and has amazing bosses.

Absolute must play, and don't stop until the end It's either a 9 or 10 from me.

Re: Here's Your First Look At The Switch Box Art For Splatoon 3

Cathousemaster

I'm sure some of the internals of the game have been changed. Rendering engine. Networking code. Possibly match making code.

Sometimes there are real "structural" reasons why a new release is warranted, or even required ... Outside a general patch.

That said, I do find the timing odd. I was certain this would have been released along a new hardware model...

Re: Some Trainers Are Worried About Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Returning To "Traditional" Catching Mechanics

Cathousemaster

I don't see the need for hate. Look at Dragon Quest ... Open world, enemies in the open world, but turn based battles.

Maybe enemies around the enemy you encounter end up in the battle - there are a lot of things you could do.

There could also be free moment in the combat, along with turn based combat ... Like a free games try.

Give them a chance, it could be the best of both worlds.

Arceus looks like fun, but it's also edging closer to a slow paced 3rd person shooter with the mechanics.

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Magnificent, Unique, And Worth Revisiting

Cathousemaster

OoT over MM anyday for me.

Its been a while, but I always found MM more "linear" and more forced - less variety in puzzle solving.

This feeds into the limited time mechanic, where the game intentionally limits your ability to explore.

OoT is so much fun "doing nothing", hanging around Hyrule field, and other areas, with the day/night cycle, and enemies changing. MM loses that.

My 20c.

Re: Random: One Fan Has "Poorly" Drawn Nearly 700 Hollow Knights While Waiting For Silksong

Cathousemaster

Hollow Knight nailed the world, characters and atmosphere. Super Metroid has better "pure" gameplay, but Hollow Knight the story. The RPG elements are also better with the customisation of the charms. Metroid ain't got that, and it makes a massive difference.

Return all the caterpillar eggs, and you'll see what makes Hollow Knight so special.

Silksong it's easily my #1 wanted, even over BoTW2.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate Nintendo's 2021?

Cathousemaster

Terrible year, and anyone giving over a 7 really has no idea.

Disregard all rereleases.

Leaves with Pokemon snap, Warioware, Mario golf, game garage and dread.

We purchased 0 of those, and indeed 0 Nintendo first party titles.

Really lacking that one big release, and they are lucky Sony and Microsoft after still struggling.

No wonder Halo gets a mention on Nintendo Life. .

If this year is a "10", next year will be a "20", just based on Zelda and Bayonetta alone. Genuine, AAA, big budget releases.

I'm not critical of Nintendo, they have done what they need to - I'm critical of the fans voting poorly here.

Thank goodness for 3rd parties, and SMT5.

Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?

Cathousemaster

I loved Zelda 2, and finished it several times. It has some great elements and ideas.

Spirit tracks is the only Zelda game I played and actively didn't enjoy. Thought it was awful. Was so happy when I got to the end, didn't bother to do the last boss, and never played it again.

Re: Zelda 64's Game Code Has Been Successfully Reverse-Engineered, Making Mods And Ports Possible

Cathousemaster

This is no more legal, than Sony recreating Mario or Link, and including them in their games. It can't be done because of copyright, which is there for a good reason.

If they want to write their own "engine" which enables a game like Zelda that's fine - but the second they make it compatible with the asset formats "exactly" used by Nintendo, then that's bad - because it facilitates copyright fraud and piracy.

If it wasn't based around Zelda, there would be no publicity and none of this would matter.

Sigh.
