I'm pretty sure everyone not living under a rock saw this one coming.
Expected.
I really want to see Yokai Watch 4 selling better, but releasing it right next to Mario Maker wasn't the best idea...
I still haven't picked this game up. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed honestly. All these amazing courses getting uploaded to YouTube.....I don't think I'm creative enough to come up with anything people will like.
Becareful, numbers might be much higher because Maker 2 might have a more digital push because of some promotions going for switch right now
Between the vouchers + the promotion the switch had in japan(3k yen for the eshop) means there's less incentive for physical sales, this is going to be interesting in the coming months because the high profile switch games have better digital offer because the vouchers
It was lower than expected I think. But maybe it wasn’t out the whole week? But it will keep selling for many many month here on after.
@DarthFoxMcCloud The YouTuber Mark Brown has an excellent video on his channel "Game Maker's Toolkit" that gives a really helpful and approachable breakdown for how to make good levels. He's definitely worth a follow, as all of his videos, which focus on various aspects of game design, are very informative and interesting.

@Ladasta vouchers + 3k yen offer on new switch might have something to do with these physical sales
Launch sales of all Mario Maker games in Japan...
[WiiU] Super Mario Maker: 138,242
[3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS: 162,180
[NSW] Super Mario Maker 2: 196.153
Mario Maker 2 launch sales where lower than I expected, but the voucher program and that Switch + ¥3000 eShop credit bundle was expected to sales skew toward digital and thus make retail sales hard to predict.
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball had the best launch on any Nintendo platform since the N64 days.
@DarthFoxMcCloud I still didn't buy It too but this video made me some more interested

Basically for him people don't need to make levels to enjoy it, people that like to play 2d Mario now will have lots of creative levels to play
But, if you want to make a level but think that It won't be good, just remember that all the Mario controls and physics are fun by itself, so even simple levels are still fun
I reckon Super Mario Maker 2 will have shifted a nice few million units when Nintendo releases the sales figures in the Summer financial briefing.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Even if you just play the story mode, it’s worth it. The story mode is brilliant. It’s pretty much all I’ve done, and I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth.
In a week or 2 the switch will secure 200 thousands units above PS4 family in Japan, pretty impressive, and next week the Switch will probably sell another 40 thousands as MM2 will continue pushing hardware
Wow that's some nice numbers there.
I wonder how much higher does it gets with the digital sales
@DockEllisD : You have powerful pro baseball? I just saw this was getting released in Japan and was thinking of importing. I'm hoping it's as good as the Wii installments.
I plan on picking this up tomorrow if I can find a physical copy. It's sold out at my normal Wal-mart, but there's another one north that's the same distance that says it has "limited stock" on Brickseek so hoping I can snag it there.
@DockEllisD : I've never heard of famitsu evolution. I may have to look into this. I wish there were more sports games for the switch, since NBA 2K has been my most played game on the system. But, it looks like I'll finally be playing baseball again.
I was expecting more for Mario Maker. But good hold for Yokai Watch... still time to go Multiplat. Cash Cow 3DS/DS are gone.
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball didn't come close to PS4 on a bigger Switch install base 🤔
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball – PS4 – 124,831(2018)
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball – PS Vita – 58,435 (2018)
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball - Switch - 75.505 (2019)
Doraemon: Story of Seasons is basically done.
Mix bag... but at least games selling over 10K again and Switch got a bump.
Pretty good numbers. Loving this game so far
For some reason I was expecting closer to 500,000 ... But I guess that was unreasonable. Nintendo may only have shipped 200,000 for launch week in Japan ... Helping those digital sales.
@Agramonte
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball had the franchise's best debut on a Nintendo platform since the N64 days, so I'd say that's a strong debut.
@Cathousemaster actually I did to, but this game is very light on the storage card and was heavily pushed to be bought digitally, it only count the first 3 days
Anyway 200000 physical copies is not bad at all, and 60 thousands systems in a week is pretty great as well, I am waiting to see how much it generated world wide, this game have a shot on the 10 million mark by the end of this year (or close to it)
At this pace, the switch can be the first console in this generation to hit. 10 games with 10 million sales (the Xbox have 0, the PS4 have 8 I think, most of them 3rd party, and the switch after only less than 2.5 years already have 5 with Splatoon 2 at 8.7 million and still selling strong, Pokémon and Animal crossing on the way and Mario maker high sales, they can come to 8 very quickly and seal the deal with some big games next year
I just realized that the Mario game that came out back in January, isn’t in the top ten. I’m surprised by that.
@BacklogBlues Slowly lifts up rock
Eh? Saw what? ( )
@westman98 So it matched a 1999 system with a 5.5 million max install base in Japan. But in 2019 at 8.3 million SWitch, They still better off to sell it into the 6.5 million base of the PS4. Got it.
@Agramonte
It exceeded the launch sales of all other Jikkyou games on the DS, Wii, and 3DS. Those systems have sold cobsiderably more than 5.5-6.5 million units.
Late ports arent gonna perform as well as original releases. I suspect you'll be the first to cry failure when DQXIS doesnt outperform the original DQXI launch back in 2017.
@BacklogBlues I think even people living under rocks could have guessed. lol
This list reminds me that I need to hurry up and import Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball like RIGHT. NOW. Love those games.
Ouch those samsho numbers.
@westman98 No, I'll be the first to point out, what self serving it is to think you have millions with only a Switch and another millions with only a PS4. Obviously they Mix, and they just play it on different systems depending of tons of factors. And Nowhere did I say this "failed".
@Tantani yup I totally agree with everything you said . Maybe a monster hunter or GTA would have a chance as well. And definitely a new Mario kart if one is in the works.
I wonder where BOTW and MO are Standing
They were knocked out from the top 10
Great sales all around on Switch.
They need the Mini and Pokémon to elevate into the stratosphere though. That’s where Switch becomes the real 3DS successor.
@Agramonte
But in 2019 at 8.3 million Switch, You still better off to sell it into the 6.5 million base of the PS4.
I don’t see any data to support that though. If your data is “50k lower sales for a late port”, I’d say that data is biased. Release date and date, and you’re probably better off to sell into the Switch install base. Especially once you factor in the prolonged sales curves on Nintendo platforms. Release Switch first and PS4 way later, and I suspect you’d see an even wider gap in sales than this.
That said, such a comment sounds very console war-ish? There is no “either or“ proposition. They can sell into both fanbases. And even then, just because one sells more doesn’t mean it’s not worth it to release on the other. Not to mention, some genres just sell better on certain platforms than others. And that’s ok. Doesn’t mean it’s not worth releasing on other platforms.
Doraemon: Story of Seasons is basically done
I suspect the same is doubly true for Samurai Showdown.
@JaxonH I didn't want to imply it was not worth it. It did better than the VITA. So if you see it as the new combo - PS4+Switch - they a bit better off.
I didn't think NL was saying Bloodstained was not worth it on PS4 because on their headlines said that the Switch version had sold more than Xbox+PS4 in first week. Or the opposite for Crash Racing at Push Square That PS4 outsold Switch+Xbox. Nobody is attacking "Hardware" by pointing these things out.
"sales for a late port"
Sure, and tons of valid points that can be attached to it: A % in the Switch base also have a PS4 and already played it. They feel it is "old" and waiting for a SALE. The have better "new" things to play right now. They All worth exploring.... Happy to go on record saying "Because The Switch Sucks" is not one of them.
"I suspect the same is doubly true for Samurai Showdown.
I worked 1 year at SNK as a pencil artist. I was not surprised when they went under years ago - usually do not expect much from them today.
Other hand, I actually thought Doraemon: Story of Seasons would do really well on Switch. Not sure why not release it on PC in Japan also like in the West, Asia and Korea 🤔
@Agramonte
Did you really? That’s actually pretty interesting. I expected Samurai Showdown to do better though as the game does look pretty good and has tons of pedigree. I’m sure it will in the west, at least. I doubt it’ll do any better on Switch, as certain genres have a bigger fan base on certain platforms. For fighting games, it’s PS4. But at least switch sales can help compensate for low sales all around.
But to your original point, I don’t think highlighting higher sales is saying something is better. However, when you say “they’d be better off just releasing it on [insert platform here], that does come off as saying “because it didn’t do as well, regardless of valid reasons why, they should have kept it exclusive”. Which, if games were all better off just releasing on the platform they sold best on, there would be no multiplats because there always has to be a version that sells best.
They would be better off releasing games on every platform. Sakura Wars, Persona, Yakuza, Final Fantasy VII, etc etc should all be multiplatform. That would truly be best. And in exchange I would be perfectly content seeing Yokai Watch 4, SMTV, No More Heroes 3, etc going multiplatform.
