As part of the Pokémon Direct which aired just moments ago, it was confirmed that Pokémon Sword and Shield will be arriving for Nintendo Switch this November.
The exact date is 15th November, with both games releasing simultaneously worldwide.
That's not all, though. As it was also confirmed that both games will be releasing in a special double pack. If you're keen on buying both versions, this bundle could well be a great option to do just that. More details on this special pack will be released at a later date.
Interestingly, the UK version of the Pokémon Direct showed a slightly different bundle.
What did you think of the Direct? If you're interested, pre-orders have already started to go live.

To be completely honest*, this game looked very routine and boring until they made those reveals this morning. They definitely have my interest now. Dynamaxing seems like a bit much, but everything else looks excellent. That open world Wild Area in particular looks like it could be somewhere I will spend dozens of hours alone. Now I just need details about how I can migrate my existing collection from Pokémon Bank and then I will be all set.
*Modified my initial phraseology so as not to upset others in this thread.
Zigzag and Zucchini need to be official. 😂
Looks impressive, going to preorder the double pack as soon as it goes up!
I think I'll stick to just one version. Feel like I might even regret getting it at all as it looks pretty terrible.
Excited! Liking the style of the Pokemon so far and loving the wild area, seems one step away from the "open world" vision some people have. Giant Pokemon though...?
I hope we get the double pack in Australia as well (with the original cases in addition to the steelbook).
I was really disappointed after buying Smash Ultimate only to have the steelbook considering that the limited editions of Fire Emblem Warriors, Fates, and Bayonetta all included standard cases as well. I don't care much for steelbooks myself.
Need to finding someone to buy the double pack... At least who is getting shield cause sword is mine!
It looks great so far, but I'm hoping we see some story stuff next Direct. The kaiju-mon gimmick is neat and it looks like it'll have more multiplayer modes than ever before. Plus you can control the camera in the wild area!
Everything looks great so far. I'm only getting one version, though, since the versions are always pretty much identical.
Wild Area looks like it'll be one of the best ever additions to the franchise.
Free camera control in certain areas and pokemon in the overworld are definitely good choices. One step closer to the BotW Pokemon that most of us want.
@thesilverbrick Not going to lie
Special day then? Breaking the norm?
Why do people say this??
Lots of helpful information in there. I liked the open world concept and the teaming up for a quasi raid. It's a console Pokemon experience so I will definitely check it out. I may get the double pack just for the steelbook and then sell of one version I don't want.
@Crono1973 Not going to lie, been wondering that myself.
I’m of course going with Great Wolf Sif
Slam your body down and Zamazenta!
If you wanna be my lover, you better get with my friends.
I wasn't the only to think that right?
Ill be honest, I am here to read the Pokemon Fans reactions. I only bought one Pokemon game and didn't really get into it.
why can't they do it like Fire Emblem and offer the other games stuff as DLC?
game looks like fun but they really need to stick to a gimmick
we have Mega Evolutions, Alola Pokemon and now McDonald's Super Size Pokemon.
@Crono1973 It’s a figure of speech. It indicates somebody is about to give what could be considered an unpopular opinion instead of sugar-coating how they feel. You’ve honestly never seen that phrase before?
The Co-Op! It's looking like they#re actually going to take it seriously! Im thinking they're probably going for making it available after you beat the main story. It's not exactly what I wanted but at least they're doing something with it!
Loved the direct.
The game looks amazing, hope those wild areas are as big as I imagine them to be. It's not gonna be like a Breathe of the wild experience, but I really like that routes are kind of over and now we will have these huges places to look around for Pokémon.
Also, like the Stadium thing, even though it's just like gyms, everything looks so big that makes it look epic somehow.
Totally excited for it.
@w00dm4n Mega Evolutions were a pretty fun addition, as were Alola forms... 'Dynamax' on the other hand just looks extremely stupid.
@BenAV it looks like Go's raid battles but now you get a Raid Boss to use
It still looks a little lacking from a technical perspective in some ways, but still very fun. I think if I was a big Pokemon fan I might have be a little "over" it by now but as someone who's not played any since the originals, I'm looking forward to playing a new Pokemon that isn't watered down like Let's Go Pickachu/Eevee.
Looks pretty decent! I'll pick up Sword, since swords are cool. Shame we didn't see who the baddies are, though!
The British Isles are full of legends about giants. I bet the Dynamax mechanic is based on them, just like how Z-Move poses come from hula dancing.
Is there voice acting? Where were the text boxes?
I liked the Direct; it’s good appetizer for what’s about to come. Hoping we get even more information during E3.
Very good showing. Not convinced on the giant battles, or the raid thing, but that's alright. Raid is obviously influenced by Pokemon Go, and I'm not sure I like that. Of all the newer mechanics in recent years, I just liked the Mega evolutions the best from X and Y.
Otherwise though, the open area looks great and the game itself looks fun to explore. Really liked the new pokemon too, even if the legendary pokemon are pretty literal. Oh, and absolutely no one is surprised by the mid November release, lol. Game Freak is so predictable there. Overall, I'm happy with the showing.
I was pretty underwhelmed. Not a fan of the dynamax gimmick or the raids so far but I may like them eventually.
So far it doesn't look like it's done anything too different or special. Hopefully that crow taxi thing doesn't replace being able fly whenever you want
@Crono1973 : I get pretty annoyed when people say "to be honest", especially to excess, but I get that it's a figure of speech, and it pads out conversation when one's brain is still gathering its thoughts, like when people say "um", or the Silverstonian "like".
Can't wait to grab that double pack. Maybe it'll include a code for some pokeballs like that sun/moon & ultra double packs?
OK what the heck....did the video change? I swear I saw PAL versions of the boxes in the video I just watched and they mentioned a steel book. Did I have a stroke watching this or something?
@Nintendofan83 north american version made no mention on any steelbooks
@Silly_G Probably right. I'd like to think "Not gonna lie" and "To be honest" is just people actually saying "Coming from a previous state of reluctance" or "Surprisingly, after seeing this..."
@thesilverbrick I see the phrase all the time and I think it's stupid every time.
Actually telling people that you aren't going to lie implies that normally you do lie.
I'm excited about the wild areas exploration, I hope they improve the textures a bit on the terrain before launch. I hope that coop raids can be just 2 people, or the matchmaking is seamless like mario kart. I'm impressed they are trying so many things.
I like the fact that the areas are more open than ever. Edit: Maybe I should have said larger than ever, since that's the correct term 😅
@peanutbuttercup Ok, I didn't have a stroke.
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/pokemon-sword-and-shield-release-date-confirmed/1100-6467388/
Go to 16:18 of the video to check it out.
Im going to grab this for sure.
I am one of the few that is only partially interested in the Pokémon franchise, enjoyed it Gen 1, where I could play with my brother, since we both had a GameBoy, but nowadays there is not enough interest in the "more than one version of the game" I tried out X & Y, but after some hours it also did nothing for me.
With that said though I wish everyone excited by this franchise to find enjoyment and cheer on, since this will be again a system seller with a high attach rate, which also means that we will see other titles.
Why was there BotW music playing briefly?
Seems like overworld Pokemon are restricted to this wild area and no following Pokemon again. Kinda blows. The rest of the showcase was pretty solid though. I really enjoy the new surroundings in battles. It's a huge upgrade from the 3DS games, hopefully GF didn't overdo it again and the performance suffers from it. I'll get both versions for sure.
Glad I Picked sword when I was preordering the game for the €10 "deal".
Looked very pretty but I think I am going to pass on this. Good on them setting that holiday season release. Stores should be crazy.
@Nintendofan83 The Direct stream was the UK version meanwhile the details in this article was from the NA Direct.
Not gonna lie, I was going to buy these anyways. But I really liked what I saw today. Can't wait!
Looks like the same old tired formula. Hard pass from me. I'm sure Pokemaniacs will get a lot of fun from it though.
@gcunit Why was there BotW music playing briefly?
Are you making a comment or genuinely expecting someone in the comments to know the answer?
Waiting for these guys to show up next.
Making your Pokemon huge, while giving them a straight power boost, for a few turns is a really bland gimmick. Adding raids mechanic to the mix doesn't really make it any spicier. But I guess it somewhat justifies dedicating whole football fields to Gym battles, even though that's a rather flimsy reason.
If there's no actual gameplay improvements, especially to the battles, then it's a hard pass for me; I've tried playing Ultra Sun this year after almost a 2 year break from Pokemon and it was just a really boring experience.
Not really my thing but I can bet the kids will bug me for this. Expensive November.
Four days before Shenmue 3?!?! Why would Nintendo make this personal attack on me 😭😭😭😭
But for real, the new mons are more compelling than any of the pre-release reveals for the last several generations, I love that they show up on the map now like in Let's Go and the art direction is very fitting. GOTY incoming!
@thesilverbrick they already did that last week. Pokemon Home is going to be the new "bank" that you use for all the games when it releases
I would hope they expand on adding more mega evolutions to the games but knowing game freak they tend to add one gimmick in each generation and abandoning them for the next gen except by grandfathering them into them.
@1UP_MARIO Best get the double pack to make the dent less expensive (unless you have more then 2 kids).
I would like to see more of the interactions you can have in the towns. It would be a shame if they built a huge city and there weren’t interesting shops and interactions other than the professor and the trainers. I still think it looks like a fun game, which is point. The Wild area would be fun to explore.
@SilentHunter382 wish me luck and wish all parents luck
@Ttimer5 I thought Pokemon Shelf and Pokemon Cupboard was next generation. I think they're running out of ideas....
Was it just me or was the music in the Wild Area suspiciously similar to the Breath of the Wild theme?
I mean, we get it, it's like open world and stuff... but that's going a bit far.
@Ralizah I know what you mean.
Double pack is a cute idea but what's the point of playing the same game again from scratch?
@JnFnRu Right. Especially when online trading is so easily accessible.
It'd be different if there were substantial differences between the versions, but there never are.
Gosh, the graphics barely looks better than 3DS 😐 And the video was uploaded in 60fps, except the game itself looks 30fps 🤔
Overall, I’m very unimpressed.
Boxarts looks meh and the Dynamaxing looks like a less ambitious version of the Mega Evolution/Z move, but everything else looks quite good.
I guess those who want Pokemon Breath of the Wild will be somewhat satisfied with the inclusion of the Wild Area.
@Ralizah @JnFnRu You forget that Nintendo wants more than one Switch in each household and this probably targets either families with multiple children and hardcore fans. Also if you have a significant other that is also high on the Pokémontrain, you can play / trade with them.
Wonder what kind of deal the double pk will be, if any savings at all
@JnFnRu @Ralizah I think the idea is more for parents who have 2 kids who want to get both games at a discount. That and collectors.
@Prizm The graphics look VASTLY better than they did on 3DS. Go look at 3DS footage, and return to one of these trailers. They're not even close.
@Crono1973 I’m sorry to have bothered you.
@thesilverbrick all pokemon same though... especially from gameboy time.... it's just copy with different pokemon. at beginning it felt great to have them but later same thing over again
Holy cow! Seeing that beautiful world and dynamax has definitely got me hyped for this game
@IHateTombs When someone says Pokémon needs a reinvention, what exactly do they mean by that? Are you expecting changes to the core game mechanics? Those core mechanics are what make it Pokémon. If you’re looking for a different experience, I’d recommend looking into a different series or a Pokémon spin-off of which there are many. The mainline Pokémon rpg series is never going to deviate very far from the series’ roots.
Not gonna lie probably gonna get the double pack
I'm generally easy going when it comes to pokemon games but I'm not entirely sold on the giant pokemon gimmick but what is a pokemon game without a gimmick? I'll leave my judgments after playing it. I also think the legends look....bad.
However, for everything else I am really excited. I love all of the new pokemon they showed so far. Especially that evil crow. And even though I'm not feeling the giant pokemon, I do like the little raid mechanic they are introducing. If it goes well, we may get...a pokemon mmo (fingers crossed). Gamefreak pulling out all the stops for their main series console debut. Gonna preorder that double pack for me and my sis.
@Nintendofan83 Ok now I'm envious. I hope we get the steelbook in NA
@thesilverbrick Why was there BotW music playing briefly?
Maybe just don't lie and you won't need a disclaimer when you tell the truth.
@westman98 IMO it seems likely to have a larger impact on regular play relative to mega evolution. Any Pokemon can go giant, so it's impossible to know which of your opponent's team is going to use it on advance. This means preventing your opponent's team from punching through hitherto reliable defensive cores is going to be a lot harder. Because megas were limited, you only need to take one look at the team preview to know which Pokemon was going to mega evolve. This is completely different and requires more strategy and deduction.
@IHateTombs You don't want Pokemon, you want an entirely different game. No thanks.
I'm going to lie. This looks terrible. Definitely not buying it.
@gcunit I know! When they were showing the "Wild Area" the music greatly reminded me of BOTW! Coincidence? I think not!
@IHateTombs The turn based battling is the basis for a lively and active competitive community. Changing it to a ff15 style MMO-esque battling system would be like the next Street Fighter becoming a 3D arena fighter akin to Jump Force. You simply couldn't preserve the essence of current competitive Pokemon play with a new system.
As a game series Pokemon has more in common with TCGs than many other game franchises. The core experience is about collection and competition. Competitively, the game works because you can build around multiple win conditions and invent novel ways to reach them. New games introduce new mechanics and new tools, which broaden the list of possible strategies and freshen the game.
@thesilverbrick The infographic they showed for Pokemon Home showed Bank connecting to Home and then you being able to move Pokemon to and from Home to SwSh.
And there you have it, Nintendo is going to completely destroy the competition this holiday season! If they release Luigi's Mansion in October, this in November, and Animal Crossing in December, their sales are going to explode! You won't be able to find a Switch on store shelves!
Haven't played these games in a long time (excluding Let's Go Pikachu), but I thought it was always a one or the other type of deal? Like, what's the benefit of having both? Are they actually different games?
@thesilverbrick Dude, I don't know why everyone has such a huge problem with your phrasing. Just want to say that not everyone is so sensitive about a simple figure of speech, so please don't take it to heart. I thought I'd throw that out there as I know it's easy to let yourself get worked up when someone throws a negative comment your way on the Internet.
@frabbit I like to have a game I shiny hunt on and a game I can replay with different teams and styles like doing a nuzlocke or something on. Really though if you have a friend who plans to get the other version you can trade with there is no reason for both.
@frabbit
There will be very little differences between the two games, so you’ll be fine with just one purchase. Each game will just have a select few Pokémon that you can only get in said game. It’s always just a handful, so it’s not a big deal. Each version will also have an exclusive legendary. So the Sword wolf (sorry I don’t remember their names) will be in Sword, and the Shield legendary will be in Shield.
This is pretty much the only difference in the past and I don’t see that changing this time either.
First ever Pokemon game for me confirmed...I will opt for Sword,for some reason Pokemon let's go did not make me want to buy it,it did sell pretty well for Nintendo though and the demo looked nice visually.
@thesilverbrick
Not going to lie, some of the users on here pick the stupidest crap to get hung up on.
Don’t sweat it, nothing wrong with what you said.
@thesilverbrick While I didn't think it looked routine and boring before these news, this certainly made the hype train blow the tunnel blocking it into smithereens (smirk).
Now I'm just looking forward to 15th of November where I WILL MAKE A SHEEP FILL UP HALF A STADION. Can't wait!
Dynamax Wailord will as big as the entire Galar region lol
I think I’ll stick with one version for now. Thinking of going the Sword route.
@IHateTombs Then don't play, or play one of the spinoffs such as Mystery Dungeon or Pokken. Or Go for that matter. It's possible that Pokemon is simply not for you. There's nothing wrong with that.
The basic fact is that the kind of large scale gameplay changes you're looking for would destroy the way the game works competitively. Another competitive type game could take its place, but it wouldn't be Pokemon as it exists, with its emphasis on outbuilding and then outguessing the opponent. It also wouldn't be able to express the same kind of synergy with the series' catch them all concept as the current system does simply because it wouldn't and couldn't be backwards compatible in the same way.
@IHateTombs
Psst...
Think about who is the main audience of Pokemon games.
Newbie players especially kids might be have difficulty to grasp Action RPG ala FF XV or Kingdom Hearts style.
@IHateTombs I hear you on voice acting and storytelling. But I don’t agree on changing the combat mechanics. It’s the very core of Pokémon battling. I’m all for mixing it up in spinoffs. But if you change it too much, you risk it losing its identity. Although BotW changed so many Zelda traditions and I loved that game so maybe I’m completely wrong.
@BanjoPickles
"Animal Crossing in December"
How did you know??
Getting myself that Sweet double pack! Bunduruuuuh!
@IHateTombs
But it doesn't mean it has to be very hard and frustrsting for newbie players who want to try Sword / Shield.
Wanna try tough challenge ?
Don't heal your Pokemons after battle, beat the Gym leaders with Level 1 Pokemons, etc.
@IHateTombs Sounds like you want the same game over and over again since all the changes you mentioned are common in many other games.
You want Pokemon to become like many other games.
I'm going to lie, I love the giant Pokemon gimmick.
@BanjoPickles I think Animal Crossing will be September meanwhile Link's Awakening is December.
@Crono1973 You really don’t understand the concept of a figure of speech, do you?
@IHateTombs ..but it's not new for the industry. If you want an action RPG with voice acting there are plenty out there. Pokemon should keep it's uniqueness.
While we are on the subject, should Dragon Quest drop turn based combat too so that it can be more like modern Final Fantasy?
@MoonKnight7 Not gonna lie, you'll most likely get targeted next for saying it's not an issue.
@MoonKnight7 @FiveDigitLP Haha, thanks. I was starting to think I was crazy or something. Some people simply have nothing better to do than be critical of others over absolutely insignificant details.
@thesilverbrick You aren't crazy, many people say it. I just can't stand it. I am sure there are things that people say that make you roll your eyes too.
@IHateTombs well the last Dragon Quest did this tbh. And it worked out great!
DQ11 was an arpg?
@IHateTombs Still turn based I hope?
Edit: It is still turn based which is good. If they want to improve the Pokemon battle system by allowing a Pokemon to learn more than 4 moves but still keeping it turn based, I would be fine with that.
@Crono1973 @thesilverbrick Not going to lie, I'm going to lie.
@Crono1973 "Not going to lie" absolutely reads as "I'm not going to pull any punches in how my opinion will sound" It's like...the classic "how does my butt look in these jeans?" If that butt look bad, you might politely say to someone, "I don't think those jeans are the best choice, you can do better." Now you could be more honest and respectful (meaning you respect them SO MUCH you tell them outright how bad the jeans are) and say, "Not gonna lie...the cut of those jeans make your butt look lumpy." "To tell you the truth" or "no lie" also works like this. Maybe this is an American colloquialism though. BTW this phrase is different than making a big TRUTH STATEMENT in a scenario where you would already expect the truth to be spoken. Like, if someone was asked about some stolen jeans and their response was, "I wouldn't lie to you, I don't know anything about it." That raises a flag, as it's defensive. Now if someone said, "Not gonna lie, I think your dad stole the jeans" the "lie" phrase is focused on the "not gonna soften the blow of accusing your dad" and doesn't feel like a dishonest phrase.
Loved everything except the Legends and the giant Pokémon mechanic. Just give us more Megas. Also hoping for regional forms to make a return or at least some new pre/evolutions for older Pokémon that need them. I miss baby Pokémon. Happy to see it’s somewhat open-world in parts.
Pokemon with a sword is just about the dumbest pokemon ever, so ill go with shield.
I wish they would have shown a location in the world, and some of the chars for the art cover, instead of these pokemon. Like, they could have had both chars you can choose between, side by side, holding their pokeballs in a cool stance, and have a few pokemon behind them, more downscaled. This art cover just looks lame tbh.
I am fairly new to the Pokemon world so I have a question: what is the benefit to buying the double-pack?
My understanding is that, traditionally, both versions of a Pokemon game are the same minus the legendary Pokemon. Is that the only difference? If so, I can't imagine buying two games just to get one extra Pokemon, legendary or not.
Man, this game looks insane.
They FINALLY took Pokemon to the next level.
I wish this game ran at 60 fps in both portable and docked play, but alas it looks like it'll be 30. Hopefully they can include a high frame rate/performance mode!
The reveal trailer was meh, but this Direct made me hyped for this game!
Controllable camera? Woho!!
@mattb994 It's usually not only the legendary that are game exclusive, there are always a lot of monsters that you can only catch in one of the games. It has been this way since the beginning. Trading is essential to the series.
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Game-exclusive_Pok%C3%A9mon
For some reason I think this is not going to sell as well as Let's Go.
@IHateTombs I hate FF15, but love all the older games for the exact reason you say its an improvement. You don't speak for everyone.
I'm really looking forward to Pokemon Sword. I had already preordered my copy before a month ago and will be picking it up at EB Games in my town. The game has me excited like Scorbunny!
@WiltonRoots
Haha, probably. It’s cool, I can take it.
Once again North America gets screwed on the "limited edition" or in this case, double pack. I would have loved that gold steelbook. But I don't want to pay the import fees. UGH, Nintendo, you gotta spread this love around.
This isn’t Animal Crossing.
Pokemon doesn't need to reinvent itself. Every year there are new 5-12 year olds.
Long time fans might get burned out, but they seem to buy it anyway.
@Crono1973 well then you’re even pettier and more shallow than I initially thought, since you’ve been stirring up all of this and bothering a perfectly reasonable person, just because of the phrasing.
You know what the sentence means, you know what he/she wanted to say, so just roll your eyes in silence and avoid making a fool of yourself.
God can people be annoying for no reason 🙄
@thesilverbrick I'm sorry you had to do that. It was an odd amount of back and forth though...not gonna lie.
@BenAV if you got a friend with a Switch and is a pokemon fan you can tell him to both of you buy the double pack idk
@clvr I only roll my eyes most of the time when I see it, I didn't today.
Box art aside the games are looking better and better, starting to feel like they actually put some effort in
Aren't they tired of making the same game again and again? Game Freak is super lazy. Dynamax is gimmick af.
I simply refuse to buy it.
It's 2019 and what I see could be great on Gamecube in early 2000 years but seriously it's laziness at its best.
@hakjie11
I'd be shocked if Sword/Shield doesnt outsell Let's Go by the end of the year. New mainline Pokemon games have always sold better than the remakes.
Dynamaxing digimon?
Somewhat open world and I can control the camera. This is the Pokémon game I’ve always wanted
@Crono1973 "I am sure there are things that people say that make you roll your eyes too."
For my part there are several turns of phrase and written mechanics that I find mildly grating. Examples used by you in the past few months include "it's all good", "if I remember correctly", the regular need to add "/s" to obviously sarcastic comments and the anti-(insert grievance) defence force cliche.
The difference I suppose is that I'm not obnoxious enough to presume to inform others how they should express themselves, especially when the comment in question is widely used in the english lexicon, grammatically correct and written in an informal internet post rather than a PhD thesis.
@Ryu_Niiyama If that’s actual support and not sarcasm, thank you. 😝
@thesilverbrick I am usually not sarcastic. If so I tend to “/s”. I don’t do the emoji-fu everywhere.
@JohnQuixote 'If I remember correctly' can be taken literal but 'not gonna lie' can't unless the user means to imply that they are lying unless expressly mentioned otherwise.
The sarcasm tag means the preceding comment was sarcastic since tone can't be heard in text.
@Crono1973 #143 you might want to check your syntax before attacking people for using an idiom in the right way. Just saying.
@JohnQuixote thanks 👍🏻
@clvr So...you must agree with my post #154 if you had to go find an earlier post to attack. Thanks.
@Crono1973 nope, not sure why you keep sounding so sure of your logic when it’s clearly misguiding you.
Haven’t you thought that maybe, just maybe, I:
1) have read the comments in order, therefore noticing 143 before 154;
2) started writing my own reply before you posted 154, so that I saw it only after I posted mine and the page refreshed?
Your conclusion looked like grasping at straws before, now it looks plain stupid.
I’m not even sure why I bother trying to reason with you.
@clvr Is that what you are doing. Trying to reason with me?
You think it's a worthy cause to convince me that 'not gonna lie' is a perfectly reasonable think to preface a post with?
I'll play: Not gonna tell the truth, I really love your posts.
Your conclusion looked like grasping at straws before, now it looks plain stupid.
Fantastic rebuttal. It says nothing that can be disputed because it says nothing.
Well, I got my primary wish: a solid release date! I finally managed to watch the Direct a little while ago and liked a lot of what I saw. Heck, I even think they're handling the Open World concept correctly: there's some freedom, but not to where you're completely off the rails long-term....At least that was my impression.
As per usual, I'll only get one of the two versions.
@PCkid the graphics and gameplay looks extremely dated , but this is Nintendo.
The back left leg for Zacian looks terrible imo
@ReaderRagfish gameplay has gotten rather stale i have to admit. Why dont they just include a pokemon safari snap mode, spice things up a bit.
Also yokaiwatch looks....more fun ^^"
@Crono1973
“Fantastic rebuttal. It says nothing that can be disputed because it says nothing.”
Dude, the “conclusion” I was talking about is clearly the fact that, at least according to you, I have to agree with your latest point, only based on the fact I replied to an earlier post.
That didn’t make any sense at all, so I showed the cracks in the logic supporting that statement. Not really hard to understand, given the context.
“You think it's a worthy cause to convince me that 'not gonna lie' is a perfectly reasonable think to preface a post with?”
Not gonna lie, I just wanted to see how far the rabbit hole goes. Also, it’d be very easy to flip that argument on its head and ask yourself the same about harassing a perfectly polite member based on their choice of words.
Since you’re apparently not even able to understand context, I’ll leave it here and won’t reply anymore.
I’d like to think you’re trolling, because I can’t seriously think someone this obtuse exists in the real world; and even if they existed, I’d be amazed at their ability to use a computer.
@clvr Also, it’d be very easy to flip that argument on its head and ask yourself the same about harassing a perfectly polite member based on their choice of words.
Fair enough.
I’d like to think you’re trolling, because I can’t seriously think someone this obtuse exists in the real world; and even if they existed, I’d be amazed at their ability to use a computer.
Oh now, leaving after a personal attack? That doesn't seem fair.
"Not going to lie" is used to simply show that you plan on being honest even if it will upset somebody. It's not that hard to understand.
It doesn't imply that you ALWAYS lie and now have decided to tell the truth.
wow wow and more wow i cant wait omg i can taste it i dont know when the deadline is but this g ame can easily get GOTY
i still want lets go DLC but man oh man this game looks amazing
Not gonna lie, I think I've found someone new for my ignore button.
@peanutbuttercup Not gonna lie, I think I've found someone new for my ignore button.
I don't think you should ignore thesilverbrick. That poster did change 'Not gonna lie' to 'To be completely honest' after all.
Looks promising, but I want to see more around the gameplay and hope some changes have been made ... The kids will love this and I'm sure we'll pick it up though.
But I hope they aren't going to restrict catching some Pokemon to group battles, and then restrict that with Nintendo online .. free local is fine.
I also am not going to lie
Well this comment section got out of hand! So many angry Pokemon players I guess 😂. And here I thought people would be happy hearing a release date , not gonna lie ..
@martynstuff
Tekken is too easy but that’s the way it is.
@NintendoByNature Not gonna lie, I've never seen so many men fighting over a children's game!
@WiltonRoots so many men
How do you know everyone's gender?
@WiltonRoots hahah people are really amped up today. And For the life of me, I can't understand why they're getting so bent out of shape over a common phrase. I guess i have my nitpicks though so maybe i shouldn't talk 😂
@Crono1973 Not gonna lie, it's a wild stab in the dark! But based on years of seeing bloodbaths in comment sections in here, it's predominantly men who split hairs the most over the most trivial nonsense...
I am gonna be honest, there was nothing in this Direct that I didn't like!
Legendaries look a lot better here than they do in primitive CGI.
@WiltonRoots How do you know though? Do you ask people their gender?
Woohoo...!
Guys, i enjoy the Direct yesterday!
Keep your head cool and let's talk carefully. 😉
@Anti-Matter Keep your head cool and let's talk carefully. 😉
....and don't lie.
I’m going to be honest and won’t lie because internet but that pokeball thing I bought with that other Pokémon game has to work or I will never be honest again no lie
PLEASE tell me that the cover art is merely "not final design."
@IHateTombs Your argument seems to largely be 'but I don't like turn-based battle systems.' This is fair enough, but doesn't change the fact that Pokemon's turn-based system is integral to its identity as a competitive game and also as a collectathon.
I've explained in a previous post that the core Pokemon franchise more closely resembles a TCG (trading card game) than any other video game franchise. Every new Pokemon game uses the same core battle system as the game before it, but by adding new Pokemon, moves, and other such gimmicks, ensures that the game is played completely differently whilst still retaining its emphasis on the same core skills.
To win against any Pokemon player who actually knows what he or she is doing, you need to:
Basically a TCG match. Design your deck, identify your win conditions, then try to safely get them into play while minimising your opponent's ability to implement his own win conditions. Like other TCGs, it is a children's game with enough strategic complexity to appeal to adults.
The TCG comparisons don't end there, though, because the first step, the team composition, ties effectively into the game's collectathon mentality. You HAVE to catch them all because it's only by catching them all that you have access to every potential strategy and win condition available. Don't have a hidden nature Politoed? You can't run an effective Rain team. Don't have one of the Tapus? You can't run an effective midgame Hawlucha sweep. It's in this respect that Pokemon's core philosophy and its gameplay come together - the competitive game emphasises team building from as wide a range of resources as possible and the game's plot, motto, and core philosophy emphasise widening your available resources as much as possible.
This is also where the other TCG element comes into play. Pokemon is virtually unique amongst game franchises insofar as it is always backwards compatible. When you begin a new game, your old collection is always at your fingertips. Occasionally, it is ONLY available in your new game if you have bought previous installments. Pokemon are released all the time with 'version exclusive moves' that they lose in subsequent iterations. If you want to rely on those moves, you simply have to collect them from earlier generations to add to your collection.
New games introduce new Pokemon and new mechanics, and as much as this might seem underwhelming to an outsider, for a Pokemon player the underwhelming-ness is the point. Very minor changes completely change the way the basic game is played. A single new introduced Pokemon can create a dozen new win conditions and trivialise a dozen more older ones.
You don't have to like it, but it's the series' formula, so you basically have to accept it, because it isn't going to change. The fact is that you can't make fundamental changes to the Pokemon formula without de-emphasising the core skills the game currently exercises.
It isn't, of course, perfect, and I think a large part of the reason why we see these criticisms is because none of this is expressed in the single-player campaign, which is designed to be beatable without a shred of any of the skills I mentioned above. This wasn't always the case (approach the Crystal battle tower without knowing anything about competitive play and you'll get curbstomped), but has been for long enough that it gives newcomers a fairly shallow idea of what the game is about. That needs to change, not the core gameplay.
@westman98
Maybe it's the art style, I like the look of Let's Go
@IHateTombs I'd actually be quite happy to see the game change. I enjoy it, but I've become increasingly distant from any kind of competitive play whatsoever as I've gotten older, and the TCG-esque elements I mentioned aren't the draw for me they used to be. Realistically, though, I don't think Pokemon can without losing what makes it itself, and further, I don't think there's any real incentive for it to change when it continues with the success it has always enjoyed.
On your other point, what constitutes the 'biggest' addition to gameplay depends on your perspective. If you're a casual fan, yes, nothing much has changed. If you're an ironed-on fan, dynamaxing potentially represents a very radical departure from the way the game has been previously played because it makes any Pokemon on your opponent's team a potential breakout threat with no means of anticipating in advance which Pokemon that might be. Go on Smogon, for example, take a look at the discussion forums flipping their shit (both positively and negatively), and try and tell me that nothing big is happening. There are people on there who are legitimately convinced that this single mechanic will be the death of competitive Pokemon.
That's the problem with TCG-style games. If you don't get them, and aren't into the basic gameplay, you won't see how radical various additions and modifications of the basic rulebook can be. If you are into them, on the other hand, you don't always want radical changes because they mess with the balance of strategy inherent in the game.
@Crono1973 call it woman’s intuition...
@WiltonRoots call it woman’s intuition...
Hmmm.....sounds like sexism to me.
@Crono1973 You seem hell bent on picking arguments with people recently. You ok?
@WiltonRoots Attributing behavior you consider negative to men without the evidence to back it up is sexism. That's not picking a fight, it's calling out sexism.
@Crono1973 It’s words on a website. Chill with the hypersensitivity. Ignored.
@WiltonRoots It's hypersensitive when people call out sexism against men but the other way around is a good thing. It's why we see so much male hate these days, because those who call it out are ignored.
@hakjie11
I personally prefer Sword/Shield's artstyle, but Let's Go still looks okay given what it is.
What's more important is that Sword/Shield has a lot of new content and features (as is expected in a brand new gen) while Let's Go is an HD remake of Yellow with Go-style catching, basic local co-op, and a single new Pokemon (Meltan).
I can't see Sword/Shield selling less that Let's Go off of that alone unless it unexpectedly reviews terribly (ala Fallout 76/Anthem)
@IHateTombs I'm just saying. They already ruined Final Fantasy, I don't want them to ruin Pokemon haha, kid.
@Crono1973 i wish i had your seemingly endless free time to talk down to people on gaming sites online. Are you seriously like this in real life face to face when talking to people? Either way you’ve annoyed a lot of people on here over the years, if you get off on that then hey. We’re done. Don’t talk to me again. Talk down to someone else. Take your social awkwardness somewhere else.
Long live the Grookey Gang
@WiltonRoots I thought you put me on ignore?
