Re: Wandersong On Switch eShop Has Outperformed Steam Sales By Nearly Three To One

Cathousemaster

Was wondering why I've never heard of this... No page or review on NL.

More reviews please ... Still go long periods on NL without any.

Still remember when I got flowerworks released... Only in my horror to discover the real challenge was to get any attention from the media. You only have a few weeks post launch, unless you get some traction with an article like this.

How is this for a theory - developers find the best way to boost sales and visibility is to put out a (fake) press release saying how well their game is selling...

Re: Bandai Namco And HTC Are Bringing Mario Kart VR To The United States

Cathousemaster

As fun as this is, it really feels like an arcade game. It doesn't have the depth or full gameplay as the full Mario kart experience.

The longer you play it, the more the immersion becomes irrelevant... And the game matters.

Still, it's definitely fun and worth trying out

I really wanted to try the Dragon Quest... A co-op style game would be better and could go for longer.

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

Cathousemaster

This should be obvious to people, like really.

They are not joycons. They have no analog stick, no shoulder buttons, etc. The only reason they snap-on is to charge.

They could be supported by other games - but this support would have to be coded in explicitly. This could happen in the future, but Nintendo isn't going to promise something that doesn't exist now.

They are nes controllers to play... Nes games. Shocking concept I know

Re: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Is Coming To Nintendo Switch, But There's A Catch

Cathousemaster

Obviously an experiment from ubi. It's unlikely to sell well regardless (in Japan), but it could open up to providing all their back catalogue via the cloud.

5G is no panacea - game streaming has massive data requirements. People seem content to play one of the million available app store mobile games instead on the go

If they work on porting odyssey to the switch, it will happen after the full release on the other consoles. It's going to take time and cost $$$.

Re: NES Games On Switch Playable For Up To Seven Days Without Internet Connection

Cathousemaster

People need to remember this is tied to an account, not a device (right?).

So you can go to a friends house, log into your account, download the games ... and they can play them for a week (being offline) after you go back home and continue using your Switch...

If they only checked on expiry date ... it would only take 1 person sharing their account details online, and people could abuse this badly.

Re: id Software Evaluating If Rage 2 Would Be Possible On Switch

Cathousemaster

Streaming on the other consoles utilised both streaming from the DVD drives and streaming from the hard drives ... Concurrently to maximise the data throughput.

It would be very interesting to see what data rate is capable streaming on the switch (cartridge, internal memory and external memory all at once).

It might even be possible for Nintendo to manufacture "faster" cartridges (which are more expensive, or optimised for streaming). Be an interesting investigation.

I suspect the breaker might be the size of the data on the physical disc, compared to a cartridge and cost.

I'll be very surprised to see a rage type game on the system, but you never know...

Re: Review: Okami HD (Switch eShop)

Cathousemaster

Finished this on the Wii, and it's a truly brilliant game. It will be interesting to play this without motion controls. Close to My favorite game of that generation.

Very tempted to double dip, which I normally never do.

Re: Enter The Gungeon's Free Expansion Is Now Live With Bucket Loads Of New Content

Cathousemaster

I have clocked over 100hrs on this, on 300+ runs. At first it seems impossible, but you slowly learn patterns, items, maps, bosses... The more you play the better you get.

I have got to the true ending on 3 characters, and beaten the easy final boss (Hunter). The pilot final boss seems way to hard, doubt I'll ever beat it.

Unlocked almost everything, including the secret floors.

My main criticisms are the game has too much, and is too random as a result. You can have easy runs or impossible runs, and it's nothing to do with skill. Some items can kill your game, depending on your setup.

It's also a little too mean, and eventually there is nothing to do with currency - I wish you could buy a gun or upgrade before a run with it.

Not sure how I feel about a massive extra content pack - there is too much stuff as it stands.

Re: Octopath Traveler Smashes Its Way To Number One In Japan By A Huge Margin

Cathousemaster

@maruse I was definitely surprised. Maybe it's the routes I was taking, or the hours... Mainly during working hours with no kids around. I had my 3ds out, and didn't see a DS in use the entire trip. Had plenty of street pass hits though, but not as many as I expected...

I only spent 1 day in the Tokyo region, and 1 night around Shinjuku. I did try out the Mario kart VR, which was quite fun.

Re: Rumour: Google Is Creating A Gaming Platform To Rival Switch, PS4 and Xbox

Cathousemaster

How about:

The hardware is a controller that syncs or clips into any modern Android phone.

The service is a YouTube red subscription.

Servers run PC games like NVIDIA shield.

Makes all available PC games available to all Android users with a minor subscription, or an additional subscription.

People need to look at the motive... Why would Google do this?

1/ attack Microsoft and windows
2/ make Android and Google an active option for high end gaming
3/ defence and attack against Apple - Google can leverage server / provider skills
4/ boost YouTube or other subscribers, and more revenue
5/ if successful, they can own the streaming market - and even own the platform for other providers
6/ the more people online, the more ad revenue for other divisions

I doubt they would spend a lot of $$$ on original content - be just a few games for promotional and exclusive purposes

...

I've always been strongly against cloud gaming - as hardware gets better and cheaper over time, it's even less useful. But if it opens up a new market - i.e 1000s of quality games to a billion (Android) users... It could be scary.

Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Successor To The 3DS According To Its New President

Cathousemaster

A simpler cutdown switch hardware would work fine as a 3ds ... It purely comes down to the software side. What is the value of the second screen? Would they keep it compatible with 3ds games? It's a 3d screen still a thing?

They could do a souped up 3ds with a better screen, faster processor and even mobile network...

Would it be compatible with the switch - use it as a controller? The price point would need to be around half to work...

Re: Review: Fortnite (Switch eShop)

Cathousemaster

My time is too limited and my backlog too large. Had 1 game, and the storm killed me even while I seemed to be inside.

Personally I'll rather play Splatoon, unless I can play this with a bunch of friends.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's E3 2018 Went Big On Smash Bros. But Left Us Wanting More

Cathousemaster

Nintendo and switch will do just fine this year. It's still at full price and they do have some killer games ready for Xmas, so sales should boom ... Combined with existing titles like Mario, Zelda, Splatoon and more.

So maybe they are hedging their bets, and unlike Sony and Microsoft have regular directs to show off new games.

Still, compared to last year E3 is barren that disappoints me. The industry seems to be running in idle and looking for the next big thing... If Ninty could have announced a bag of big third party games (even all ports) it could have really changed things.

No such luck... Maybe it will take another year for the big publishers to have something solid ready.
