Re: Happy Halloween! Nintendo Has Released A Free Metroid Dread Demo

Cathousemaster

Well, I'm clearly in the minority here.

I played the demo last night, to close to completion ... And my interest in the game has significantly dropped.

1/ is there music? I even went to the settings to look for an option, but I didn't hear any in-game music.

2/ flashbacks of Metroid returns. The game is way too easy. The normal corridor enemies have no personality or challenge, unlike even the original enemies from Metroid 1. The rooms are to small.

3/ is this Metroid, or contra? Samus moves so fast, can aim anywhere, it no longer feels like Metroid - an exploration game. Run and gun?

4/ there is no dread with the Emmi, just frustration. Mistime and it's game over. Sigh.

5/ even more emphasis on the "counter" attack, including the run + counter.

6/ I can only presume the demo has a cut down intro compared to the original game. It's confusing and messy. Past or present ... Did I miss something from a previous game?

7/ The "omega" beam controls were awful, unless I missed something.

Same old comments - maybe I'm just too old school, and too connected to the old games. Metroid is not about bosses, it's about exploration. It needs a certain amount of challenge when exploring. I don't like the direction this is moving in.

Off my wish list for now. Bring on SMTV ... And Silksong.

Re: Review: Metroid Dread - Quite Possibly The Best Metroid Game Ever Made

Cathousemaster

@BulbasaurusRex I can't answer your question / post properly, not without going through Samus returns again.

My vague memories of that was a complete focus away from environment level design, with most of the focus on combat. It lacked all the brilliance of Super Metroid, where power ups could be used in creative ways to traverse the world.

I'll comment again after I have played dread, but that's going to be a while.

I think I'm just too old school these days - if I don't get lost endlessly and die continuously, I'm not happy

Re: Switch Takes Japan's Entire Top 30 Software Chart, The First Console To Do So Since 1988

Cathousemaster

Two comments:

1/ This means nothing on PlayStation or other sold more than 2,200 units during the week...

2/ More and more sales are digital these days. The newer consoles have even more digital sales. So these charts are becoming increasingly irrelevant over time, unless they include digital sales.

All that said, this is pretty amazing ... Given its the first time its ever happened since there have been multiple consoles around.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

Cathousemaster

@METROIDDREAD I did finish it, I remember the boss frustrating me in some way. But I got through it.

Again, I wish dread the best - and I'll love it to be a great game, as I love 2D games. But it's a wait and see.

And re: your exploration comment - I totally agree, but there is clever exploration ... And there is mindless exploration. It can be a fine line between the two.

@METROIDDREAD I'm not going to go into the details now. I enjoyed it so little, I had literally wiped my memory of the game - whereas I found other M to be innovative, and quite interesting.

Everything that is unique about Metroid relates to how the upgrades allow interesting combat and world navigation - and following on, provide access to new areas as "puzzles". If they aren't puzzles, or the progression is obvious ... It's not Metroid. It's just a vanilla platformer.

From memory, Samus returns was a boring, unchallenging platformer, with few if any "puzzles". In a lot of ways, Metroid is very similar to Zelda ... Just differently themed. But I'd need to replay it to provide better commentary, and I'm certainly not going to do that now.

I absolutely can't wait for silksong, nor axiom verge 2 ... Dread, I would love this to be an excellent game ... But I'm certainly not going to buy it without reading a lot of reviews.

Re: Review: Star Renegades - Borrows Ideas From The Best To Create A Truly Inventive RPG

Cathousemaster

Based on this review / comments I bought the game. Whereas it took a while to warm up, I really enjoyed it in the end ... My save game has over 80hrs clocked up.

It's not that hard - I finished it on my 4th run, but each time you do, the difficulty options increase and it becomes more challenging.

I have had enough after completing " Entropy 1", which is after the "extreme" difficulty.

The combat system is probably the best turn based combat system I have played - if only Pokemon has concepts like this.

There is plenty to unlock, and the gameplay changes a lot based on the party combination ... Some characters are better than others, but they are all good and balanced in their own way.

Great game, definitely worth a go. Would love a sequel with more depth and options.

Re: This New Game Boy Game Is 21 Years In The Making

"Our next contract was to make two horse riding games, Mary King’s Riding Star and Equestriad 2001. We created prototypes for both, but then got the contract for Lego Stunt Rally."

Wow, this brings back memories. Equestriad was the first game I was lead on, back in Tantalus. Riding Star was IR Gurus from memory, and I worked there the following year on the Willowbrook Stables game.

If he wanted to do Gameboy Advance, then he might have used the Catapult system.

Memories...

Re: Nintendo's Switch Online Service Now Has More Than 26 Million Subscribers

Cathousemaster

I picked up family membership and don't regret it all. Between SNES and nes games, and playing Tetris 99 ... Easily got my money worth. Now the kids play Splatoon online, get Mario maker courses and play Minecraft. All for about $3aud per month. And I have given free access to a free others ...

As long as the price doesn't start increasing, I'm good with this.

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Still Dominates As Switch Takes Nine Of Top Ten

Cathousemaster

Not a great shock, but the charts will be the Nintendo charts until PS5 releases.

Given the delay around it, there should be plenty of games at launch ... As long as covid hasn't messed up development, and it really should have minimal impact on software development for large titles, in development for years.

Nintendo will not want to launch around the same time as the PS5 ... They want to avoid competition. Maybe a year later. And switch is doing great.

Re: Review: Trials of Mana - Old And New Combine To Create A Fine RPG Adventure

Cathousemaster

I played the demo, and frankly couldn't stand out after a while. The story telling was atrocious, and I spent most of my time running around the environment looking for the next "checkpoint" to advance the story. For example on one of the characters are you initially tasked with "find her brother, he is nearby" ... Only to discover you never really find him, just wasting time. The combat didn't inspire me, the equipment was the same old routine, etc. Deleted it after a while, have much better RPGs to play.
