While Goku is busy readying himself for the upcoming release of Dragon Ball FighterZ on the Switch, fans of the popular anime character have supposedly been discussing the possibility of him making a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
According to Comicbook.com, Goku's English voice actor Sean Schemmel replied to a fan on Twitter asking about the legitimacy of a recent IMDB listing for the character in Nintendo’s fighting game. Schemmel said he hadn't been contacted or recorded lines and was equally as perplexed about the Saiyan appearing in the line-up:
Rumours have apparently been circulating Goku will make an appearance in the latest Super Smash Bros. game all because Bandai Namco is helping out with the development process. It's also worth noting Goku obviously has a Japanese voice actress and Schemmel previously voiced Lucario in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.
In the latest Smash Direct, Masahiro Sakurai said more announcements for Ultimate were still on the way. Following the recent reveal of two Castlevania fighters, do you think there’s a chance arguably the greatest anime fighter of all-time could eventually be added to the Super Smash Bros. series in some form or is IMDB up to its old tricks? Tell us below.

Goku won't be in Smash Ultimate, someone has most likely just added that IMDB listing for a laugh.
"Yes, it's real. I finished recording the other day. Sod NDAs. Thanks."
Welcome to Nintendo Life, where things that don't happen are also news.
Quick! Someone get a hold of Mike Myers and see if he's made any new recordings of Shrek recently.
Has everyone forgotten that Sean Schemmel was also the voice for Lucario? Even if he IS approached for Smash, it could be for him.
And no, Goku won't be in Smash, and Shrek either, so please stop trolling and start supporting real characters. Damn, even Waluigi if you absolutely want to be dank.
Goku would seem out of place in Smash so I hope it's fake...
Why would anyone expect characters in Smash who did not originate from a videogame.
Fundamentally, the Super Smash Bros has always been a celebration of video games - obviously Goku's been in a whole heap of them, but he isn't a "Video Game Character". If Goku's in, why not Mickey Mouse? Bugs Bunny?
@BlueOcean It's almost as if stuff like this is relevant to some people's interests!
Please Nintendo, no anime characters only videogame characters.
There are tons of characters that deserve a spot. Dont fall for anime fandom it will ruin what makes smashbros, Smashbros..
The smash ballot has lots of good choices and i still hope isaac from golden sun is in.
In the future maybe there could be a Nintendo VS Namco, Capcom or something like but please not in smash.
Bandai-namco can put at least one more character in because of their support in the past and even still. I dont know wich one fits in smash?
And maybe one more from square enix? CRONO from crono triggers (sness) he at least looka like a dragonball character lol.
This is mostly irrelevant to the article but did you know Sean Schemmel also voiced the dad car in the atrocious animated film, A Car's Life?
why are these people such idiots? don't they see that Smash Bros only alow fighters who originated from video games (or part of video games in the case of R.O.B.), if Goku gets in, it opens the flood gates for characters like Shrek, Twilight Sparkle, Spongebob, Deku, ect.
Waluigi has a bigger chance then F*cking Goku (btw this comes from a dragon ball hater)
@BensonUii no he is not
#FakeNews
If possibly true, do you really think anyone involved would actually confirm he's in the game before Nintendo is ready to do so and risk their wrath?
Seriously? The listing is already gone.
Goku is an anime character first, videogame character second. Are there any cartoon-prominent characters in the roster? I don't believe so
People need to stop with begging for Goku. Due to his origins as a manga character, he does not reflect the idea of Smash Bros. being a celebration of video games, therefore he will never make it in. The Goku advocators have become incredibly toxic and annoying in recent times.
Good.
If Goku got in, but Shantae and Waluigi still weren't a thing in the latest Smash, I'd... never be able to play the game and enjoy it. I have my limits.
Ocean dub confirmed???
Sean Schemmel is the voice actor for Lucario in Super Smash Bros. WII U and 3DS.
No, that just means that someone else is probably voicing Lucario here.
@Dogorilla and Lucurio in Smash Wii U and 3DS.
Really guys?
I suppose you think that Wikipedia is a reliable source of information as well. Any Tom, Dick, or Harriet can edit IMDB.
Does people forget that if goku gets in then shrek gets a chance as well? Followed by cory in the house...
May as well remind you guys that waluigi has more chance that goku?!
'Greatest anime fighter of all time.' Hunter x Hunter, Hajime no Ippo, Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure say otherwise.
Goku isn't a video game character, he's a manga/anime character, there's been other Smash Bros style games that feature him and other anime characters.
it's obvious, smash is about a collab of great games, not anime / manga
@sam1729 because Goku is THE Japanese fighter. The manga and the show has inspired tons of media in the east, even Smash.
Those who say Goku opens the door for joke characters like Shrek simply don’t know what they’re talking about. What kind of influence has Shrek had on Japanese culture or fighting games? Has Namco Bandai made a Shrek fighter?
Get a grip. If any anime character gets into Smash it’s Goku and only Goku.
Didn’t he say this series would only get characters that came from series that started as games? And Bandai Namco helped in making the last game and only Pac-Man and some mii costumes came from them. If they added a character from games they make it would probably be tekken.
lol! wishful thinking is all
Lol, it’s funny to see how upset people get at the thought of a character being added that didn’t originate in video games. Idk what the big deal is, but I think it would be cool to have Goku in SSB
@DragotheKomodo I used to be in the Dragonball is anime camp, but after the success of Xenoverse 2 and especially how good DBFZ is on Switch...I honestly wouldn't have a problem with it!
I don’t care either way. Lol
Of course he hasn’t. Goku is an anime/manga character, not a videogame character. Putting him in Smash would be like putting Cookie Monster in the Avengers.
@BensonUii first, i am not a kid, i am 22
second yes it whould open the flood gates, cause Goku did not start in a video game, wich is smash rule #1
third Lucario first apeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeons as a statue
@GrailUK to bad! he did not start in a video game, he started in a manga, wich does not count
@BensonUii Your Lucario argument is a little foolish, don’t you think? Lucario was only in that anime movie as a tie-in to the video game series because he was set to be a Pokémon in the then upcoming Generation IV games. Pokémon is a game series first and foremost. The Pokémon anime and its movies only exist because of the foundation set by the video games. Lucario was designed as an intended game character in an established videogame series first and that’s the only reason he was even in the anime. The same cannot be said about Goku.
Good. We don't need a manga character in Smash. He doesn't belong. Maybe make a fighting game of just anime characters? Oh yeah, that's already a thing.
@LUIGITORNADO
I'm well aware of the impact that Dragon Ball has had on Japanese (and international) media, and am a huge fan of the series myself, but my issue isn't with the inclusion of Goku, it's the inclusion of any non-video game character. It goes against the spirit of the series.
Real talk... What if they added Goku, but it was kid Goku with a Nimbus Cloud and Power Pole from the NES game. Would that adequately appease both sides?
He voiced Lucario in S.S.B. for Wii U/3DS. Is he indicating that someone else is voicing him now?
Goku in Smash is reasonable but Shrek isn't?
Them's some mental gymnastics just because Goku appeared in many many games. Shrek may not have, but the comparable one would be why not Mickey? he inspired tons of media, even Miyamoto for Mario. So Goku in Smash is like Mickey in Smash in that regards.
But we all know how people would feel about "A cartoon character from years ago" would fit the same criteria.
Lol, this is ridiculous. Let's say Goku ends up in Smash Ultimate, and we found out because the VA told us so. Wold that be interesting at all? Why do people insist on knowing the roster before the characters are announced? Are surprises not allowed anymore? We can wait for more information on a game that's releasing in 3 months. Can't we?
@DragotheKomodo Exactly. I used to think that.
Shovel Knight is already pushing it.
Whoever started assuming Goku would be a thing is obviously delirious, a punster, or both.
@Desrever
That's the ONLY version of Goku I would be remotely accepting of.
Gasp! I am shocked.
Also what @IronMan30 said. I hate that people have to seemingly know absolutely everything so early on. I love the surprise of having certain characters in, and having them leak before their actual proper reveal always ruins the surprise for me. Too many people are looking for their 5 minutes of internet fame and it's highly annoying.
@GrailUK well then, you should keep thinking that way, as long as his origin is a manga, he can't get in
I could imagine that Smash could go towards a "Marvel Vs. Capcom"-future but with other characters, like Smash Vs. Shonen to include Goku, Luffy, Naruto...
But not in a regular Smash and certainly not Ultimate. It would open the floodgates to more and more characters...
@BensonUii "Also Lucario appeared on a Pokemon movie first before in a Pokemon game. But he made it on Smash."
That comparison doesn't work. The anime was always there to promote the games, not viceversa. Pokémon of the next generation were always teased a bit earlier in the anime.
Fore example: It's no coincidence that the "reboot" movie for the 20th anniversary rewrote the plot to include Ho-Oh, Suicune, Entei and Raikou to promote mainly the re-release of Pokémon Gold and Silver (and them being Raid-Bosses in Pokémon Go around the movie's release) while also officially introducing Marshadow (also part of the plot). That was all to advertise Monsters connected to their main franchises.
We don't have a situation here like with Marvel comics adding Agent Coulson to their plots because they liked the new character in the movies. The Anime can't just invent Pokémon.
Only very rarely special forms cross over (Ash-Greninja and the Pikachus with Ash's cap are the only exceptions).
@BensonUii Also: With the last Smash Ballot, it was clearly stated that characters have to originate from a game to be considered. Of course it could change in the future, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I'll not say Goku in Smash is impossible, everyone got surprised when Cloud was announced.
But taking about the voice actor, he does Lucario's voice too? If he does, why would he say that?
Ugh. Please no.
@Desrever Love that.
"Smash is only for video game characters"
No, Smash is for whoever the hell Sakurai feels like putting in. Ultimate is the... Ultimate fan service game, and people have been clamoring for Goku since Smash 64.
I'd say his chances are as likely as Cloud.
@IronMan30 it would be just as much a surprise now as it would be in December, who would choose to wait if they could be surprised now? And with the added excitement of learning something they aren't supposed to know, of course it makes sense.
I love Dragon Ball, but I would rather have characters who started out as video game characters than Goku. I mean, if Goku gets in then there ain’t nothing I can do about but I really want someone like Rayman, Dixie Kong, Ninten, or even Rabbid Peach.
I don’t care if Goku is from anime or games it would be cool to have him. But I most definitely would prefer Solaire of Astora
A license like this would be impossible to obtain. Japanese copyright owners don't like these crossovers unless they are the ones who do them.
Anyway Goku is too overpowered to be in a Smash Bros game, his presence wouldn't be faithful to his power due to a necessary lower level, so it really doesn't make much sense.
@SpaceboyScreams yes, but I'd rather hear it from Nintendo than the VA, especially since hearing it from him doesn't include an intro trailer.
I'd much rather have Doomguy. And Dillon.
@BensonUii Except that argument falls flat. You’re missing the point. The Pokémon anime often uses the movies as promotional material for upcoming game content. Lucario was always intended to be a game character first and the anime was just drawing attention to future game content. Saying Lucario is primarily an anime character is like saying Cappy from Odyssey is primarily a cereal mascot, since the Mario cereal was released just before Odyssey hit the market. You’re really reaching for an argument here.
If Goku or an anime / cartoon / comic / manga character comes to Smash, in addition to breaking the original idea about this game, I will personally send requests constantly to Sakurai and Nintendo to add characters from My Little Pony / Equestria Girls, to be fair.
@DragotheKomodo Considering it’s people actually making these decisions, I doubt including Goku will open any kind of floodgates for the likes of My Little Pony or Spongebob. Again, we have smart and rational people making these decisions
@SakuraHaruka The original idea of the game (if i recall correctly) was strictly Nintendo based characters. I think that ship has sailed by now.
No. They don’t eventually need to add every character under the sun. But It isn’t going to kill the franchise if they add Goku. Smash Bros will still go on
Here's the thing, how many people though 10 years ago that Jason and theAlien would be in a Mortal Kombat game? Or that Negan would be in Tekken?
Guest characters are rapidly becoming a popular trend for fighting games since they bring in more main-stream appeal from people who might not normally buy the games, but their make money for the video game publishers and the owners of these charchters.
People keep acting like Goku will never get in because of some unwritten rule that bans non-video game characters. But let me ask a question.
How many people thought Cloud would appear in a Smash Bros game? For people who are too young to know why this is a big deal, let's go over some history.
During the NES and SNES days, Square was one of Nintendo's most loyal first-party developers, and their Final Fantasy games(alongside other titles) helped give Nintendo as edge over Sega and NEC in the home video game market.
Come the Nintendo 64, and Final Fantasy VII starts development on that platform. But Square becomes frsutrated by the limitations of carts, and leaves Nintendo to make games for Sony and its Playstation.
This results in a bitter falling out between the two companies that lasts for an entire generation, with Square even mocking the N64's storage medium in ads. Final Fantasy VII eventually comes out on the Playstation, and becomes a huge hit that not only brings Final Fantasy and JRPGS into the mainstream outside of Japan, but becomes(much like Street Fighter II) the gold standard that modern RPGs still draw from.
Final Fantasy VII's success far surpasses any of the entries that were on Nintendo platforms, and Cloud becomes an iconic character in gaming and is closely tied with the Playstation.
Up until Cloud showed up in Smash Bros, people openly debated who would be the rep if Final Fantasy got one in Smash. Terra and Cecil were popular picks, the Japanese favored Bartz from Final Fantasy V, and even generic but iconic classes like Black Mage were tossed around.
That's why many people were shocked to see Cloud show up as a playable character in Smash Bros. The trailer even lampshades this by having Cloud say "I'd never thought I would see the day."
Cloud turned out to be the most popular DLC character, and Sakurai later said that Cloud was picked over other Final Fantasy charcters because he was the most well-known character and the one who would make the most money.
Why is this important? Because up until Cloud showed up, the other third parties had made major apperances on Nintendo platforms. Mega Man and Nintendo are closely tied since the NES days, Sonic made a home on Nintendo platforms and found great success(compared to Playstation and Xbox) after Sega left the hardware market, Pac-Man, Ryu, and Snake have all made major appearenaces on Nintendo hardware.
So, how does this tie into Goku? Well, the most common argument that people make is that Goku is an anime character and therefore adding him opens the flood gates for every other character.
But here's the thing, Goku is what Ryu is to fighting games and Cloud is to JRPGs. Due to Dragon Ball's popularity, he's pretty much the first thing people think of when they think of Anime. Goku is pretty much the most mainstream anime character in the world. Adding him is not going to open floodgates because his popularity and mainstream appeal far surpass most other characters.
As for the "He's an anime charcter and does not belong in Smash Bros" here's my counterpoint to that argument. Since the first Dragon Ball game came out on the Famicom all the way to Dragonball Fighter Z, Goku has been in 45 games on Nintendo platforms, with only the Virtual Boy and Wii U never getting a game that had him in it.
Barring Mario, Link, Pikachu, and maybe a few others Goku has been in more games then the vast majority of Smash's roster with 45 games in Nintendo platforms alone.
Finally, he can work gameplay wise if you think about it. The Tournament of Power was pretty much a glorofied Smash Bros match between 80 fighters, and flight was disabled. Goku is also known to purposly hold back his power to fight on the same level as weaker oppoents to test himself.
So, his Smash appearance could be him not using flight due to nobody else having that ability and holding back his power so he can fight his oppoents on an equal level.
My money is that Goku will show up in Smash Ultimate, but as a DLC fighter. You want to set the internet on fire and overshadow most of Sony and Microsoft's announcments at E3? Show off Goku as a DLC fighter for Smash.
So, I bet he's going to be in. Its strange how his voice actor keeps addressing this issue and it keeps coming up.
But I'm going to double down. Not only is Goku getting in, but Vegeta comes in as Goku's echo fighter.
So, Goku will be a DLC fighter with Vegeta included as his echo fighter. Like him or not, Goku will print money and will surpass pretty much any other possible DLC character in terms of popularity and how much money he makes Nintendo, Namco-Bandai, and Toei.
Me personally? I want to see Goku in the game, and I could see him as a wonderful addition to the roster.
I don't care what the haters say, I want to see Goku in Smash!
They already have him in the Jump fighting games. Keep him there.
The thing is, idc what video game characters gets in, but something from another media? No. IMO it defeats the purpose of what smash so strongly honors and celebrates.
Besides, if he somehow gets in, and isn't the best character, I'm sure said fans will complain. (just see how the superman vs goku turned out)
They day they start adding characters originating from alternate media (like tv shows and books) is the day I lose interest in the series. Ruins the point of this game IMO and I want some restrictions on who can be in the game, we already got third party characters, we don’t need to broaden the scope even more.
Also IMDB is a garbage source, that’s not any better than Wikipedia, literally anyone can edit that stuff.
@UmbreonsPapa
Yes, that I know very well, however, the first smash, obviously was the first and the original roster was like that, only nintendo characters, but they were only few and the most representative of their "best known" franchises; in the Melee, add some characters (especially more echos / clons), but there were also rumors / comments of Snake (Konami franchise) and the characters of Fire Embleem were not considered for the West.
Was until the Brawl where they added Snake and Sonic, but still held a point, video game characters.
That's why I mentioned, "to be fair", because if they add a non-game character, it alters the last main point of the game, and also, if that happens, then everyone will have valid points to add "" Any "" character and that will be valid anyway;
That it does not harm Smash ?, maybe it will still be a fun game, that it's good, but with characters that would not have any sense, well, tell me, that's a good point?
This is literally the opposite of news.
Have we reached out to other voice actors? I'd really like Peter Cullen to confirm that Optimus Prime won't be in the game. Ellen DeGeneres has yet to say whether Dory will be joining the roster. And for the love of all things holy, will someone check in with Mike Judge, because I'm absolutely certain that Beavis and Butthead are finally going to be assist trophies.
@Majora101 I would rather play as Goku then any of those characters. Video game icons fine, I can see your argument about someone like Master Chief.
But Funky Kong? Why would I want to see a roster spot taken up by the Kong I went to so I could travel between areas in the DKC games?
Okay, what about Vegeta?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXOlmxIPbnE
He's clearly the "Old Man" in the infamous King/Ponytail 4chan leak.
@Euler That 4chan leak was garbage. It has already been debunked. It said there would be characters revealed in a July direct and at EVO. Neither of those happened.
@UmbreonsPapa you mean idiots, cause if even 1 character makes it in without a game origin, EVERYONE is possible
Although I would prefer many characters that originated from video games to take his place, I wouldn't mind Goku. However, why would anyone expect a character reveal to happen in a random tweet??
Once again, people get over-hyped for their favorites and assume non-video game characters will make it in, despite how many times Sakurai has said that's the only rule. Just another phase that'll be washed away soon enough.
Getting Goku in Smash wouldn't calm everyone down. His inclusion would open the flood gates and have even more people making ridiculous requests and complaining. I'm fine with Nintendo's rule of having the characters be classic and/big VIDEO-GAME characters first. We still have plenty of big Nintendo names and popular indie characters to go through from Golden Sun's Issac to Shantae.
@Desrever Quiet, I gotta check if James Earl Jones has been in Kyoto recently!
Heihachi is the only Namco rep I can see happening any time soon anyway.
Although, in all seriousness, I'd want to see 007 in before any sort of Goku.
Christ, GoldenEye 64 outsold Ocarina. I'd say he's plenty qualified to join. Damn you, Microsoft/Activision/MGM/whoever has game rights now!
Perhaps it could happen. I’d say there’s a 50/50 chance. He could be dlc or they could just do a surprise announcement. I don’t think adding goku in “opens the floodgates.” At least goku is actually a recognized fighter compared to characters like shrek, and has many fighting video games. goku is basically one of Japan’s most recognizable mascots. People need to stop creating some unwritten rule that he can’t get in. Another thing is no he’s not too powerful. If we were going by this stupid rule, bayonetta, cloud, and Rosalina shouldn’t be in because they would just wreck everyone else honestly. If jigglypuff can fight bayonetta and win, other characters can fight goku. Sakurai can do whatever he wants. If cloud can get in, goku can get in. Finally, for those who say they won’t support or play smash ultimate if they put goku in, that is honestly the most sad and petty thing I’ve heard in my entire life. Sakurai has poured his blood, sweat, and tears into every entry of smash to make fans happy, and to say you won’t play it because they add one character in? Fine don’t play it. I wouldn’t want to play with such simple minded people anyway
I still cannot believe people actually unironically want Goku in Smash. What a joke.
Lies!!
@thesilverbrick I’m well aware, it was sarcasm. Still amusing how much attention is got though.
@Euler I’m sorry. I should’ve clicked on your link before replying. I would’ve seen that you meant it as a joke. But you’re right; people are still devoted to that stupid and clearly fake leak, even after the direct. When in the history of ever has anything been accidentally leaked with cute little code names for each potential character? It was always outside the realm of credibility.
I really wish this could be put to rest, What part of "No Non-Game Characters" don't people understand?
I'm just "Saiyan" it might make the game "Cooler"! Hahahaha I crack myself up!
@GameOtaku alright, I’ll give you that one. 😏 lol
I looove DBZ, but i want DBZ and Naruto etc. to stay out of Smash Bros.
Smash bros should be exclusive to characters originated in Games.
The only way i can accept this slipping is with Sora from Kingdom Hearts with Goofy and Donald but even if that would happen they could have Sora in Smash without refering to Disney at all to not cross that line.
Goku won't be in it. The one and only Prince of the Saiyan's should be in it.
@DragotheKomodo Well, yes. Everyone is possible. Even without Goku. But there’s no rule saying that Nintendo has to let anyone in beyond who they think should be in. And I’ve been playing Smash since the beginning. I’ve always seen it as one the consistent franchises in terms of high quality and good decision making. I see no reason why the inclusion of one character would change that
With that being said, I’ll be honest and say I don’t care either way. If he’s added, great. If not, I won’t lose any sleep. I just think with a game/series so huge, what about Goku would ruin everything else there is to enjoy?
My other question is this rule about needing to be a gaming character originally. Was this actually uttered by someone involved with the development of the franchise? Is this stated somewhere as a matter of fact? I acknowledge the logic behind the idea. Just curious if this was officially stated or has this become internet factual. Stated so much, it’s deemed to be the truth
I hope we get Negan as well. /s
@UmbreonsPapa it is not a official rule, but it just make sence, just think logiclly about it, what whould happen if a non-video game character comes in smash bros? even if this character had a video game, but only years after there origin
No to Goku. I don't need anime characters ruining my video game paradise. I've hated the stupid pointy-hair-and-testosterone DBZ art style since fifth grade and I'm not changing my mind now.
@thesilverbrick no offense, but 4Chan in general is garbage.
@BlueOcean To be fair, the article is tagged with "Random" rather than "News"
This whole argument over whether Goku qualifies so be a character in smash is ridiculous. There are no rules over who appears in Smash other than what the developers think would be appropriate. Although Goku did not originate in video games, I have personally owned 7 different Dragon Ball (Z) games, including Xenoverse on Switch, so I believe Goku's legacy in video games is extremely established by this point. Goku has transcended his manga/anime origins, just as Mario has far surpassed being a mere video game character. The argument that letting Goku in would open the floodgates for other characters like Shrek to get in makes no sense at all. So if the developers let Goku in, they will all of a sudden be forced to let in movie characters like Shrek who have no memorable or notable video game legacy? It makes no sense at all and is just a weak argument for argument's sake. The purpose of this game is for us the players to have fun and enjoy ourselves, and I know for a fact that me and MILLIONS of other players would enjoy seeing Goku in smash. Will it hurt me deeply if he isn't in it? No. Will it ruin the game for me if Goku, who has starred in more video games than many other actual characters who are in Smash, is put into the game? No it will not. I have complete confidence that this will be an amazing game when it comes out, and that is with or without Goku.
@IronMan30 No offense taken. I completely agree.
i rather have rex with pyra/mythra make it in first along with maybe llyod irving and sheena from tales game as well.
@thesilverbrick with your avatar, I should've already assumed you had better taste than that. LOL
@MimoDX2 I know, but I mean most others too. I find it kind of funny. It makes the good stuff much harder to find, though.
Goku will generally never happen, honestly it would actually make more sense for a Bandai Namco inclusion to be something from God Eater what with God Eater 3 releasing soon enough.
@Majora101 You specifically referenced Dino Spumoni from Hey Arnold! as an example. Your comment is definitely my favorite of the article.
I absolutely love DBZ. I'm looking forward to DBFighterZ on switch. But cartoon characters in smash?
I've played a few Dragon Ball games, and I certainly do not think of DragonBall as defining a genre or shaping any kind of video game history, like Cloud, Ryu or Pac-Man. There are dbz games I love, but I don't see them as anything more than capitalizing on the popularity or nostalgia of the source animated series, much like video games based on Disney movies or the Looney Tunes game on nes, or hell even those nickelodeon or cartoon network crossover party games.
Goku is not worth representation in a game that is a celebration of gaming icons. If it were a celebration of anime/cartoons, then sure, go for it.
Seriously people, get it through your thick skulls, Goku is a licensed character who originated from a MANGA, Dragon Boy. He has no business being in Smash EVER!
It would be sooooo laughably stupid and out of place if Goku was in Smash. I seriously hate DBZ and it would ruin everything.
@IronMan30 Haha, so Liz Lemon’s mere presence is accurately communicating my stance on things. Perfect.
@StormtheFrontier Super funny because I was introduced to Goku as a video game character way before even the Pokemon series in the US - I really want to get the Nintendo Classic Mini Famicom Shonen Jump Edition also - Would be great if Nintendo strengthen their already great and lengthy relationship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXLSqRfs3vA
He's lying...
Prince Vegeta 4 Smash 5! Let's do this!
Isn't he already in a brawler with other Shonen Jump characters? Go play that, people. Or play Super Smash Flash 2. Those are the closest you'll ever get to having Goku in Smash.
Let's make a deal, then. If Goku gets in Smash, Mario should get in Jump Force?
What's that? Mario will never get in Jump Force? BUT THERE'S NO RULE THAT SAYS HE CAN'T, RIGHT!? ITS DOWN TO THE DEVELOPERS, NOT YOU, RIGHT!? MARIO WOULD TOTALLY FIT BECAUSE I THINK HE WILL! RIGHT????!111!!1!1
… See where I'm going with this?
Contact the japanese voice of Goku next. And yes, I prefer Goku's japanese voice.
@Dogorilla OMG, A Car's Life is my favorite movie. I want the pink car on meth for smash
@BensonUii That's a valid point, and I'm not saying it's impossible, just very, very unlikely, at least talking about Ultimate. With all the stuff packed in there I think Nintendo would want to cut back down on content before they invite a whole different universe - especially one that has several different licence holders all over the world.
And yeah, of course these are all just assumptions from what I've witnessed how Nintendo likes to act out.
They do however need to communicate very clearly why they picked Goku over other fighters from other non-gaming media, and that in a way so that even the most dense fans get it.
For example:
Clones were always hated in Smash because people thought till SSB4 that "they are taking away a spot" - while actually, they were just something extra, as clones are easier to balance than a whole new character. If they didn't want to include clones, it would essentially mean less characters in the roster.
Now that most are re-branded as "Echo Fighters" everyone seems to be okay with it and suddenly get the concept.
@dleec8
You say that there are no rules, but so far not a single character is playable in Smash, who did not originate in a video game.
I'm not saying Goku couldn't make it in, but that bit alone really stacks the odds against him.
I said there were no rules beyond whatever the developers deem is appropriate. I promise you that if Nintendo determined that their net revenue from Smash Bros alone would jump by 50 percent if they secured the rights to put Goku in the game, they would do it in a heartbeat. As much as they are a company who stays true to their artistic vision for how games should be, they are also a company with shareholders to please, and they would pull the trigger on Goku if A) They were able to secure a profit sharing agreement with those who hold Goku's media rights, and B) They determined that they would enjoy high enough net revenue from his inclusion to the point where it would make all the financial sense in the world to put him in.
The real argument here is whether or not including Goku breaks the "spirit" of what Smash Bros is supposed to be. At first, Smash Bros was a Nintendo-character only brawler full of fun fan service in the form of Nintendo character trophies, music from various games, and other goodies for the fans.
Now, it can be argued that Smash Bros has transformed into a celebration of all notable video game characters who have appeared on Nintendo consoles. In that sense, Goku has appeared in at least 15 different games for Nintendo consoles (That is a rough estimate off the top of my head) , so his relevance as a video game character on Nintendo consoles is well established.
I don't care at all if Goku is included or not, but I feel that the rule that "only characters who originated in video games" can be included in Smash Bros is a ridiculous one because some characters have appeared in enough video games that they have made that transition already. I have tons of great memories of playing as Goku in far more games then I do playing as some of the other characters on the Smash roster.
@UmbreonsPapa At the Smash Ballot it specifically said twice that you can nominate Video Game characters: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/100/087/2ca.jpg
One could stretch it and argue Goku appeared in games, but Sakurai also said with the Bayonetta reveal that only characters originating from video games were considered for the ranking.
Rules can change ofc, but it does make sense they set their limits that way.
@dleec8 Shrek has appeared in many video games as well. So have the likes of Spongebob, Harry Potter, Mickey Mouse, and Jeb Bush’s dad. Well okay, that last one only appeared in one video game but it was on a Nintendo system. And third party characters are quite controversial within the Smash community, particularly for PlayStation characters like Cloud and if there’s too many of them. Smash should still be first and foremost a celebration of Nintendo.
@Euler At the end of the day, I agree with you about Smash being a celebration of all things Nintendo. At its heart, that is what it is. It is as much a game as it is a celebration of the Nintendo universe and all those things that inhabit it. From that perspective, I can understand Nintendo fans being apprehensive about allowing in characters who previously had nothing to do with Nintendo (such as Cloud). However, I was a HUGE FF7 fan when it first came out, and I still love that game to this day. I was happy to see Cloud in Smash Bros if only to say that I could finally play as Cloud on a Nintendo system lol. But I thought it was a fun inclusion, just like I thought Snake was a fun inclusion even though the style of the Metal Gear games is almost the exact opposite of the style of a typical Nintendo made game. My only thing about these arguments over who gets into Smash and who doesn't is that some people seem to forget that these games are supposed to be fun. I would honestly having fun playing as Goku in Smash, even if he would seem somewhat out of place. But didn't Snake seem like a guy who would be out of place as well? And I understand your argument with bringing up Shrek and Potter and those other characters, but I believe the reason people bring up Goku for Smash so much is because hes already a fighting game character himself, and comes from an anime and manga series based on fighting, so his inclusion into a cartoony fighting game kind of feels natural if not for the fact that combining him and Mario seems like such a weird combination. But then again, Solid Snake and Mario is even weirder in my opinion.
Thanks for that. I can't stand english and other voices in anime series than orginals. No soul in them. Just simple do not suit characters
