I saw Ring Fit in stock at a local store and picked it up on a whim. I love it. I genuinely enjoy the game and the exercises and am looking forward to playing again tomorrow. Good stuff
Don't forget about Code Name S.T.E.A.M. everyone. Henry Fleming, Fox, Tom, and the rest of the team are counting on you. And don't forget Honest Abe and his giant 50 ft mech! Find it in the search bar and give it the 8's and 9's it deserves!
The way this game got panned for not having an overhead map and the length of the enemy turns was a bummer. If you watched the enemy turns (instead of just wishing you could skip them) you got a sense of where the enemies were located and what their strategy was. That mechanic and the lack of the map ID'ing the location of every enemy on the stage, made for one of my favorite tactical/strategy games ever. A great combination of stealth, positioning, and planning when to go all in with your special attacks. The characters and world building are a ton of fun, too. So many of these stages and battles are etched in my memory.
@mossimac I picked it up in November and have played through the first act. It is amazing. Lots of menus, items, stats to sort through. It can feel overwhelming at times if you’re not into all that (or even if you are). But the combat, characters, voice acting (every character in the game including npc’s are fully voiced + plus a narrator), story and overall experience are all a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.
No!!!!!! Subscription services and cloud based models are bad for consumers. “Give us your money for access to content.” Once you stop you have nothing to show for the money you’ve spent. Its a power-play by corporations to force consumers to rent instead of buying.
I get it. Its their content. They have every right to do what they want and decide what access they grant to the content they own. But its not good for the consumer, or creating great experiences for the gamer. Its a consolidation of power and a fleecing of consumers.
@SeantheDon29 Because camera phones didn't come out for another year or two and memes were just a dream discussed over 56k modems in the nerdiest of online chat rooms. ;D
But I agree. It would have been a great moment to capture.
@JasmineDragon Wizard of Legend is definitely easier than Dead Cells, and the world and progression is not as nearly as complex, but the combat is satisfying, and the synergies that develop through items and spell upgrades make it a lot of fun.
@JasmineDragon I’m tempted to give it a try regardless off the time thing... but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t enjoy it. I wonder if the devs will ever offer the option to turn off the time limit. Or maybe that would break the game?
Dead Cells is great though. Wizard of Legend also a blast if you haven’t tried it.
Thanks for this review @sj33 This looks really good to me, but I am kind of old and don't like stress. When I play Dead Cells I never go for the timed gates, but explore each part of the map and aim to beat the enemies in each room. How does the 18 minute mechanic influence gameplay? Does success in the game have a 'speedrun' feel, or once I'm good enough is 18 minutes plenty of time to ascend the Skymelt?
I do notice some places are better with the framerate issue after this patch. Mabe Village for instance. Animal village seems better but not totally resolved. Maybe that’s why they didnt mention framerate issues in the patch notes? Has anyone else noticed improvement after the patch.
I love the game but I definitely am distracted by the FPS dips and wish you could turn off the bottom of the screen blur.
Thought this one looked interesting in the first reveal. This interview has caught me interest again. I like the idea of a strategic battle system, and not having to wondering around a world not knowing what to do or where to go next.
FE- Three Houses. How long is this game?!! Astral Chain - i think i might be starting to understand the combat. Mario Maker 2 - i recently uploaded my 2nd level. “Overthrow the Ice Cartel!” (WP8-L6F-20H)
Hang in there! The internet can be cruel. I don’t think anyone here was trying to be too harsh, just unsure about the context of your post, which makes more sense after you explain it.
Anyway... have a great day and enjoy your switch lite!
@The_Pixel_King It definitely has a nuclear throne vibe. I love Enter the Gungeon and Wizard of Legend so I'm hopeful for Blazing Beaks. Glad to hear Mana Spark is good. It caught my eye intially and then I forgot about it. Thanks for the rec's!
Purchased Cuphead this afternoon and I love it. Beaten the first island so far. Challenging for sure, but satisfying to overcome. I was torn between this and Katana Zero. KZ is probably great as well, but I have no regrets about picking up Cuphead. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
I had been watching this game for a while, and considering purchasing, but playing a lot of Dead Cells. When Nuclear Throne was announced for Switch, I decided to buy NT or Wizard of Legend. Went with Wizard of Legend, and I love it. I like it more than EtG, and Dead Cells. The combat is super satisfying and skills based. When I started I could hardly beat a single floor (level). Now I consistently make it to the last boss or just before. Still haven't beaten him yet though. Great game!
I like the difficulty. Its forcing me to be strategic and think about the strengths/weaknesses of the units. I'm not very good yet. But I'm getting better!
@Likethepear Great! The game is huge, and at times its geared towards absolute chaos, (lots of items, explosions, unpredictable patterns of attack), but underneath all that there is beautiful core gameplay about movement and timing attacks. You could try doing a 3 or 4 person smash battle with no items to get the feel. Also, when you get knocked off the stage, you can double jump, and most characters B + up or B + right/left is designed to help them get back to the platform. Have fun!
@Likethepear I'd say start with one character. Mario is a good all-around character. The game is very directional. All your attacks are A + direction (up or down or left or right), and your specials are B + direction. If you hold A + direction you will charge your attack making it more powerful. If you stick with one character you will start to get a feel for their moveset and strengths. And the game just grows in strategy and depth from there as you work in characters and other mechanics like dodging (RT + direction) and throws (R bumper to grab). Maybe that is helpful. I hope so. Because I love smash! If you find a friend or two you can pummel on as you learn together, that makes it all the more fun.
That's dissappointing. Hollow Knight is one of the few indies I was actually really hoping for in a physical version. If they ever figure out a way to make it happen, I'd buy it.
Just played this weekend with one of my best friends. We had a blast with it. The co-op strategy mode is a great addition. And the mini-games use the joy-cons in some interesting ways. We could never time our high-fives well though...
Hollow Knight - finally earned an ending on Friday evening, ( 76%, 37hrs) but lots left to explore it seems.
Dead Cells - love the play loop.
Octopath Traveler - Beens bouncing around between stories, but I might try to focus on one to completion moving forward. Don't seem to have the levels to just focus on one.
@Rhaoulos Thanks for clarifying that. I have heard both terms and never understood the difference. Was never sure if I was saying the right thing! Now I know...
If I had gotten the cartridge, I'd definitely be trading this in. Feels like a knock-off. Not a solid Nintendo effort. The core gameplay is great, but the lack of basic options kills the fun. And adventure mode is not good. I am wondering if Nintendo's efforts to release a steady stream of titles on Switch is affecting the quality of the games.
Enter the Gungeon. I'm hooked. Tried this and Binding of Isaac. BoI was a little too gross for me, but Enter the Gungeon is phenomenal. Still haven't beaten the fourth level yet, though.
So glad to see Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. on this list. It's one of my favorite 3DS games and didn't deserve those low reviews. It's a great strategy game with a lot of personality and totally different mechanics than Fire Emblem or Advance Wars.
@Sakisa I like the NA version as well. The European version looks soft, almost generic to me. I suppose it's what you are used to though. The SNES was a huge part of growing up for me and the first thing I worked and saved money for. I'll always love the boxy design and purple buttons.
@abbyhitter yeah... I've seen it in the bargain bins for under $10 for sure. It's worth at least checking out if you like strategy games and enjoy a slower, thoughtful pace.
@Ralizah Codename S.T.E.A.M. was vastly underrated. Reviewers trashed it for not having an overhead map, but the mechanics, team abilities, and strategy were built around its absence and that made for a great experience. It's one of my favorite 3DS games, hands down.
@MoonKnight7 @tealicious Yeah. Storyline and characters are great. And the ridiculous theme song on the start screen. Love it. It was crazy how exaggerated the enemy turn length was as well. I read one website say enemy turns took 5-10 minutes! (I never had one last anywhere close to 5, let alone 10 minutes.) I am glad we got the game and you have some good points about how Nintendo could have marketed it better, I just hope they haven't given up on the franchise. I would love a sequel!
I am excited to play 'Steamworld Heist' though. Maybe it will scratch a similar itch. Great to see it getting such good reviews. I picked up my copy yesterday and look forward to trying it out...

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #12 - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
In the PAL and NA versions the thumb on Belmont’s whip holding hand is janky. Backwards? Dislocated? I can’t quite figure it out.
I went for NA. It would have been Japan for layout and color, but I just could get past the distorted human forms.

Steamworld Quest. Really enjoying it so far. The combat makes it for sure. I'll probably play some Cuphead, too. I'm almost to the third island there.
