@Coalescence SR388 Ruins is a mood. Really tense and alien sounding (kinda like “Norfair” from Metroid 1)
@Kilroy I remember waking up early on Christmas at my Gramp’s and finding this game in my stocking! I couldn’t wait to relay we got it, to my older brother (who was still asleep with the rest of my family). The box art is still epic.
@MarcusIsCool Good game music is always good game music. I was just listening to all manner of NES, Super Nintendo and Gameboy music today through the app
@Zeebor15 It’s the long awaited sequel to the first Direct (movie). This direct will wrap up all the loose ends from the cliffhanger story, and you won’t believe who dies!
Tough choice; both great examples of good art and composition, but the western one actually shows exactly what the game is about; whereas the Japanese cover is just almost every character looking really silly. JP looks less like product-shelf art and more like back-of-the-manual spread image

@Anti-Matter It’s not hard to refill your lives supply by replaying earlier levels. Most Marios are designed that way, and further on in the game there are plenty of 1-ups to get again—over and over— in the hub.
@jake1421 The main problem here is that you can ricochet into other enemies and keep taking damage. Even the first Castlevania didn’t allow that. That’s a design no-no
@sketchturner No it doesn’t. The game struggles to hit 40fps consistently even with sacrifices. You would have to make the game very ugly to get 60 fps and if you’re using fsr you will get major control lag.
Heretic still has some of the most impressive / technical level design architecture for a BSP based Doom Clone. If you look at Raven’s maps in an editor, you can see how complex (yet clean) it all is. Level 4, “The Guard Tower”, is especially cool looking, with fantastic use of lighting contrasts to paint a really dreary, medieval overcast setting. But it really comes together on Level 6’s cathedral setting, along with one of my favorite songs in any boomer shooter.
@HammerGalladeBro Two things that do not hold as well are the absolutely obtuse and repetitive level design; as well as how you had to sit there for minutes on end refilling your energy reserves after a player death
Castlevania 1 and 4 also have similarly impressive mood changing ending themes (that do a good job of representing the hard work and the adventure to get there)
@Teksette One of the most cinematic ending segments on the NES / Famicom
@swoose Yeah but games are far too complex and big now to not hire outside contractors for test
@mlt I actually prefer Heretic’s more focused levels (and superior soundtrack); Hexen is too sprawling and backtrack heavy for its own good. I do like the classes in Hexen though.
These games look gobsmacking glorious on OLED TVs. The colors pop, lighting is more ambient and the contrast is way sharper. Now that’s it’s also in 4k, it’s a huge improvement over the original. I can’t stop playing BotW all over again (trying a three heart run)
@EarthboundBenjy It is well known the first third of the Nordics has some… rough waters. It gets significantly better after that, but yeah, I agree the announcement of Proud Nordics stopped me from completing it.
@Mocznik Professional critics were nearly unanimous in their praise of “Ocarina of Time”. It wasn’t for lack of internet. It’s that the game brought Zelda into the realm of 3D so well, and that the innovative mechanics like edge-triggered jumping and enemy lock-on worked so seamlessly in its world.
@Strawblaze Nintendo fans aren’t “low standard” we play the best video games in existence (the type of games that can be replayed over and over again). Nintendo’s R&D teams have always stressed fun and innovation over everything else.
This frame rate situation is being overblown.
The thing I’m more worried about is if the destructive environments take precedent over actual level design. But if this is the Odyssey team, I should probably trust them more. It also just really doesn’t look like a Donkey Kong game. I already have it pre-ordered but I am worried about these things.

@sixrings No, Mario Galaxy of “Mario 3D All Stars” is a completely different release, and went through a separate round of testing and implementation.
@cylemmulo New UI and Storybook scenes, as well as new Assist mode.

@The_Nintendo_Pedant He is speaking more about nostalgia of old videogames in general, l think.
@Elbow Probably will be on Game Pass at some point
