If you are a Nintendo Switch owner, you might well have been enjoying Splatoon 2 since its launch last year. Playing through the single-player campaign or testing your skills out in some online matches is a great way to build up your Inkling, but what do the Splatoon-themed amiibo do within the game?
You can, of course, use both the new Splatoon 2 amiibo as well as the amiibo sets from the original Splatoon on Wii U to unlock special gear which can give your Inkling special abilities or gear. It goes without saying that the amiibo will look great on your desk or gaming shelf, too!
In order to use amiibo within Splatoon 2, simply head over to Nikopolis Square and you will find an empty amiibo display case toward the end of the plaza. After approaching the box, you just need to place your amiibo on the right Joy-Con NFC reader, or in the middle of your Switch Pro controller to activate.
Read on to find out what each amiibo does within the game.

You certainly aren't required to have the amiibo to fully enjoy the game, but for those people that do have them, they certainly provide a nice bonus within the game.

Spend my day yesterday unlocking everything I could. The original Power Armour remains my favourite gear, but I still need to customize it properly.
I wonder how long till we see Marina and Pearl amiibo?
I wish you guys would include screenshots of the unlockable outfits.
When it comes to outfits, does anyone feel saying what they're called suffices?
Is there a level requirement for unlocking the whole set for each Amiibo? I scanned the Inkling Girl and just got a hair clip.
Hurry up and die SCamiibo.
Do the Splatoon 2 amiibo work with Splatoon 1?
I tried it with one amiibo and the game told me I would get more stuff when my level is higher. What are the level caps for the unlocks?
I've got my original boy and squid amiibo and looking at the rest of the unlockables I think I'll just stick with them... the Squinja set is the only one I'd really be tempted by, but I don't think the bonuses are worth it for my play style.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Don't get mad. Get more Amiibo!
@liljmoore
Doubt we have to wait long on those^^
What level do the items unlock?
@Fandabidozi No level. Just scan it, save some gear, and you get one of the pieces.
Does loading amiibo equipment also change the weapon you're using?
@TheLZdragon
Ok thanks. 😀
I've unlocked a headpiece for 3 amiibo. And I can get pictures taken with em but no more armour.
What am I doing wrong. 😓
How do you get all the gear from an amiibo?
@sillygostly Yes, they do. I tried mine this morning. But they just do the same stuff as the original amiibo.
@ Everyone asking how to get all the gear
I believe it's the headpiece at Level 1, torso piece at ~Level 6 and footwear at Level 9.
If you're Level 9 (or higher) already, scanning an amiibo will give all three items in one go.
@RainbowGazelle : I expected nothing else, but it's good that they work. I don't have the first game in order to check myself.
@jswhitfield8 Or you could lock items like the Twilight Bow already within BOTW behind an amiibo and pretend to call it effort.
Oh and when you say £10, that's when one of the little scammy things are that price or even available.
Yay, they're not locking single player levels behind the amiibo paywall this time.
@Bisylizzie Currently I'm at lvl 8 and I already have the footwear from my two amiibo. (Not sure if I got them, when I was lvl 7)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "Hurry up and die SCamiibo"
I tend to agree, but at least it isn't that intrusive in-game...yet. if other folks like to collect figurines and unlock digital extras, I can't fault them very much. It's like buying DLC.
@IKAY
I could have the levels wrong, as I only scanned them twice, once at about Level 4 and only got the one item, then Level 9 when I got both others, so it's possible that I'm wrong on the exact levels.
Apparently each unlocks a piece of music as well, but not unlocked them yet (though, I'm still only Level 9, as I've been addicted to the Salmon Run mode and neglected Turf War)
@Shiryu Which Amiibo did you use for that exactly? Want!
@Fandabidozi I think it's one piece a day. I got the second set (armor) this morning. I'm not really sure how it works.
@TheLZdragon
No, it's level dependent - I got all three items for each of my amiibo collected yesterday - about level 8 or 9 to get all three clothing items.
When I scanned my original set of Splatoon amiibo the other day (Boy Girl and Squid from the first 3 pack), I didn't just get the shoes for each, but I also got these music tracks that could be used in the arcade game by The Shoal, if these also count as amiibo rewards I find it odd no Nintendo news source has mentioned it
@Shiryu Saw your photo on Twitter on Friday, that was quite the amiibo haul. I just grabbed Cloud, Bayonetta and the squid, the only 1 of each they had at Target. Well they had a the boy and girl but I still have the originals. Plenty of Zelda BotW amiibo also. Was really odd to see that 1 Rosalina seemingly out of nowhere. I think the amiibo "craze" has died down quite a bit.
Thank you for asking @sillygostly and thank you for replying @RainbowGazelle I bought the new squid amiibo on Friday when I went to pick up Cloud (and also Bayonetta) b/c they had exactly 1 of each and I never had the squid from the first game, just the boy and girl, b/c NoA didn't sell the squid by itself, only in the 3 pack. I haven't taken the Zelda disc out of the Wii U since we bought it but was hoping i could finally do the squid challenges on single player in Splatoon.
@sillygostly They do, but it reads it like it's the original amiibo set.
I don't have Callie and Marie, but have the others and they unlock music tracks after you've gotten all your clothing sets.
I've got all three squid colours, got my unlockables from the green and purple ones, but for some reason my orange one doesn't register Anyone know why? I've tried everything - I haven't touched that amiibo since buying it a year ago. Sucks that its functionality will go to no use.
@rjejr That is more stock than you can find in all of Lisbon. Thing are not getting any better down here, I consider myself very fortunate.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE We get it, you hate them. They won't die though, and many of us love them. Would it be too much to ask for you to just ignore amiibo news?
@Gen0neD All 3 original and all 3 new Splatoon inklings. I was actually trying to get footage and discover how the unlocks work to make my own Splatoon amiibo guide, but Daz beat me to it. Here is individual footage of each one.
@Monkeido I will work with Darren to have those up ASAP.
@Shiryu "fortunate"
Fortunate? You've always struck me as more of a go-getter than somebody who relies on luck. Me, I'm more the luck type, if I see something I buy it, otherwise I can't be bothered.
@rjejr Trust me, when one of the major retailers in the whole country receives just one P2 Bayonetta and one P2 Cloud and I am the one that had them reserved before everyone else, I am certain some sort of good fortune must shine on me. You are correct, I never leave anything to chance, but even so this was the very same retailer that messed up my Wii U "Bayonetta 1&2" First Print Edition, the single special edition missing on my Wii U collection.
@Shiryu Well ok, I'll admit, where anything made by Nintendo is involved, we all need a lot of luck to get anything, but it helps to pre-order. (My wife works 3 blocks from the Ntineod NY store and it still takes luck to get things sometimes, or waiting in line for hours, she'll do that for her kids, not for me.)
I'm actually not sure what's worse w/ Ntinedo, the amount of stores that dont' get any stock, which maybe those stores just didn't order any, or the amount of stores that get "1 of each". How many stores order 1 of anything?
Well, I'm glad your hard work helped you get lucky, how's that?
@rjejr I'll gladly take that, thank you. ^_^
@Shiryu Thank you! That is more than I ever could've hoped for. You rock!
@Gen0neD My pleasure.
@nab1 No they need to be kicked into their grave and they are dying off. A lot of retailers don't care or stock them anymore. Neither do the general public care. It's just the diehards left and they're getting screwed by scalpers because Nintendo are producing so few of them.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well obviously if you say so, all of that must be true.
@nab1 I glad you understand.
@Shiryu This is already lovely, thank you very much! ^^
I guess I will rescan my Series 1 set AFTER I reach level 9 . . . . .
@Dazza it would've been really helpful if the article included pictures of the gear that every Amiibo unlocks.
Not just because of the looks, but also because one could see the included abilities at a glance instead of reading the description.
@TheLZdragon I think you get pieces based on freshness. I've gotten more then one piece of armor in a day. It wouldn't give me the second piece till I played a couple matches and upped my freshness.
Especially for this, they should have a pack of Amiibo cards that allow you to unlock this stuff. I have the original set, but don't want to spend the $$$$ to get the new stuff.
@TheLZdragon
Awesome, I'll give it a try. 😀👍
I skipped past Carrie and Marie (said they're busy) and somewhat the new amiibo part of the article since I haven't scanned them myself yet (got them though), but it nice that a game have a read and write function and not read only.
If they have Pearl and Marina, I would so got that too
@SnowFox I'm thinking the same thing too since I scanned the purple squid today and got only the helmet (level 18) but when I scanned in my Splatoon 1 boy and girl amiibo Friday and play awhile, I got the other two outfits (top and bottom) at once and something for the arcade.
@nab1 Haha, right? Any statistic by random Nintendo haters on the internet is nothing but stone cold fact.
@crimsontadpoles I'm kinda sad the got rid of the between-match mini games though.
@jswhitfield8 Yeah, right? What's not to love about overpriced on-disk DLC with limited availability? They are totally not hurting our gaming experience, no way.
Argh, the Nintendo Switch has turned me into an Amiibo buyer! This never happened before, but now I want them and search every store that I go to in hopes of finding one that I need. I refuse to pay inflated eBay or Amazon seller prices.
@Fandabidozi I got the sense that it might be tied into your "rank"? They said something to that effect to me, and once I got to Fresh with one of my weapons (they all seem to start at Dry, then go to Raw, then Fresh), they unloaded all the gear on me on my next Amiibo scan. Not sure if there's a connection there, or if it's just a number of days thing, but if it keeps not happening for you, that could be why!
@AlternateButtons "You dont need to discover every Green Tunic in BOTW."
Oh but you do. And the Fierce Deity Armour and all the weapons.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE In Australia, Amiibo are $15 and sometimes half price, while comparable non-Amiibo figures are $20 to $40 and not made by Nintendo, and often don't look as good as Amiibo.
@MarioPhD
Hey, thanks. I played for a few hours this morning to level 9 and got all the sets unlocked. Now to start worrying about the abilities. 😅
@MadAdam81 That's Australia, that's not the situation in Europe.
@jswhitfield8 Metroid Prime 4 May change that, and other titles they bring. The Amiibo also unlock skins for Federation Force.
But what about the additional tracks for squid beats?
@liljmoore Today
Literally, I have every Splatoon amiibo, including the Octolings on preorder, except for the Splatoon 2 squid. That darn purple squid has eluded me for the longest time. 😂
This is one of the better uses for Amiibo. They do unlock exclusive content, but not content that gives the player any unfair advantage. Nothing these items do is unique to them. It's just a purely aesthetic bonus.
I do believe this is the final version I will have to make of this:
Nintendo is among the worst when it comes lack of value in overpriced "DLC".
Doesen't help that Amiibo prices increased alot. The NFC tag on Amiibo's is only a 512 byte tag, and is dirt cheap to make. You basically only pay for the figurines.
I'm glad i got tons of Amiibo's for only 2 and 3 bucks each before a local media store shutted down in 2018.
@Dazza
I thought there were more amiibos besides the ones you said? The octoling amiibos?
