A short time ago we reported on comments from Final Fantasy XV Director Hajime Tabata regarding a possible port of the game to the Nintendo Switch.
Speaking to Dual Shockers, Tabata has clarified his statement somewhat; while nothing has been decided as yet, his team is "looking into" Switch in order to see what the system is capable of.
One thing it isn't capable of doing at this moment in time is running Square Enix's Luminous Engine, which powered the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Tabata says that the engine was ported over to the console with no optimisations and it was found that Switch can't "bring out the most of the engine" at the moment. However, Tabata also says Unity and Unreal Engine 4 tests were carried out, with positive results.
The director ended by stating that his team is now close to fully understanding the technical specifications of Switch and that it will continue to consider what can be done on Nintendo's system.
Could that end up being Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition? That's not known at this stage, but would you be happy with playing the scaled-down version of the game on your Switch, or would you rather see Square Enix put some extra effort in to port over the full-fat version?

If they're still only looking into the possibility of putting games on the Switch, by the time they make a decision, a game could be out 6 months to a year after that. And that's if it's a port. The wait would be way longer if(it'll never happen) they make an original game.
If it's not a port of the full game then I would rather they didn't bother.A Pocket Edition is just opening the Switch up for derision.
To be fair I imagine they had to optimise the engine on other platforms too. I guess it wasnt instant so they arent bothering.
Also interesting to note that Tabata seems to want to do something new for Switch.
I'd play it again on Switch. But If they won't put any effort into the port then don't port it at all. They keep teasing and teasing then let's say it does come out on Switch, but a low quality one, that would be a major insult imho. I wouldn't even touch the game if it was the Pocket edition. I'd rather have a spin-off with the same weird style.
TBH, for me, the story and premise of 15 wasn't that good. The only thing going for it is the pretty cool combat system and visual eyecandy. Again, that's just me.
In the article they said they would leverage the characteristics of the hardware. That's a little concerning to be honest. And it also gives them a reason, to an extent, not give Switch owners parity with other versions in terms of functionality, ala FIFA18
The full fat version is only on PC next year. The console versions are nowhere near the full fat version. Switch version will be the pocket version if it ever happens.
I'd personally take a visual downgrade of the full version over the version meant for mobile phones though will probably purchase either way.
The portability of the Switch makes it a really nice platform for large sprawling RPG's IMO.
They were planning to release FFXV Pocket for Switch. They tried to tease saying about a FFXV game for a console that sounds like twitch... "let's see if we can create a hype for the game" and almost all comments were saying that a Pocket Edition for Switch would be a crap... For each person saying "I would love to buy for a full price the pocket edition" we were reading 10 comments saying that it would be an offense.
So that's it...
They created a hype, and now they are afraid of confirming that since the beginning they were thinking about the pocket edition, just an Android Lazy Port with bluetooth controller support.
I am not sad seeing this game not coming Switch.
FFXV was crap. Played it on PS4 and got bored after a couple hours.
The story in Destiny was more cohesive than this piece of junk! and that's saying something.
I play the heck out of FFXIV and enjoy it immensely, so I am not a hater.
FFXV is a pretty looking game and that's about it really. /shrug
After the insane amount of time they spend on development of FFXV, you just expect better! Like a decent cohesive story maybe? /sigh
I don't mind if they port anything final fantasy related to the switch!!! just do it!
Oh just give us the chibi mobile port.
Just focus on a new (and better) final fantasy, i prefer having a better FF on my switch...
I'd like a game where in portable mode, we have the chibi models, and in televesion mode, the good looking game, like someone said in the previous comment section about this game.
FF XV on Switch or not, I don't care.
I definetely choose Miitopia 3DS 100 %, Thousand times better than boring OMG Ultra HD Realistic Final Fantasy with Blah gameplay, Blah Story.
Don't care if this comes to Switch, give us the ORIGINAL FF7 and i will be most grateful
@Pres_Shinra
Final Fantasy XVI ??
@Bunkerneath
Oh, better add with FF VIII & FF IX as well.
I suppose it'd be cool if a version of the game came to Switch. I can't say I would definitely buy it but I haven't played it before so it's a maybe. I was really interested in it for a while when it first released but it wasn't out for PC so I shrugged and moved on.
come on, the switch has been released 6 months ago already
plenty of other developers understood the hardware already, such a lame excuse
They were only waiting for to see how the console would sale, that's all
I think the amount of work that it would take to get the regular version running on the Switch just wouldn't be worth it... but at the same time I think the pocket version wouldn't be doing the Switch justice.
I think the best outcome would be for them to give the Switch it's own version... a mid-point between the regular and pocket versions.
@Roam85 Well, are you willing to pay 40 dollars for the FFXV Chibi version that will run like an Android game?
Cause that's - exactly - the reason they tried to create a hype.
I'd rather see a Final Fantasy spin-off like Crystal Chronicles on Switch than a half-baked port. They wanna do spin-offs of 15, right? Just do one of them for Switch IF you're really that bothered with making a Final Fantasy for Switch. Or make a third Bravely on Switch.
Just as I posted this, an Inkling named Regalia joined. And he's got a Charger, on the opposing team. I love him already! ... and we lost. Like I said, love him already!
Any port of FF15 to the Switch would be massively compromised. Better to produce something completely original and designed for the platform.
Look at what Square achieved with Bravely Default on the 3DS.
In terms of functionality FFXV shouldn't be too demanding. The game mechanics aren't that complex. I would buy the game on the Switch if the only downside was a graphical reduction, but I would not buy a dumbed down version.
What would really sell me is a port than includes the DLC which I never played on PS4. As always with the Switch, I wouldn't mind the scaled down graphics for the benefit of being able to play it on the go fully functional. That's the key benefit to the Switch, a slight reduction in graphics for the benefit of incredible convenience. That aspect has fully won me over. I hardly touch my PS4 now.
Skip XV, put XVI on the thing.
To be honest, I'd rather play the remaster of XII on Switch. Playing an Ivallice game on Nintendo hardware feels right.
@Grawlog Bleugh.
The more I read about this the less excited I get. I'd play the pocket edition I guess, if it's cheap. Oh well.
I don't understand what testing a game engine has to do with localising a game I desperately want.
@jancotianno honestly if they throw in enough bonuses to make it worth 40 dollars... sure? Depends what they throw in.
Maybe a traditional turn based combat version with the old menus and FF6's version of multiplayer. Which yes, I realize I'm asking them to scale the game down more. Heck if they added a 16 bit version as well as the mobile chibi version. Or Tales series style multiplayer where other switches can control the AI characters, I'll retrodip.
Or if it costs 40 bucks on the phone/tablet anyway, I'd probably opt for the switch version.
Well. They do have some money they need to make back, and it seems ubundantly clear that any sort of special ties with Sony won't be what holds them back anymore.
@GrailUK
Supposing the game you want is Final Fantasy XV, testing the Luminous Engine has everything to do with it, since that's the engine powering the game.
That is, unless they decide to recontruct the entire game in Unity or Unreal. Which would probably take some time.
I'm only gonna buy the full fat version. It better be the Xbox/PS4 ver and not that horrible chibi one. That's all I want. A high quality port. Preferably 720p 60fps as framrates are more important to me.
By the time FF XV get released on Switch the game will be a couple of years old, best thing for square to do is to make a FF built from the ground up for switch.
Be careful FF director. If you looking long into the switch, the switch also looking into you. Be there or be square
P.S: "Unity and Unreal Engine 4 tests were carried out, with positive results". Bring us Final Fantasy 7 remake then (runs on UE4) and screw mobile FFXV!
Don't mind the chibi version at all - it has a pretty cool aesthetic and looks closer to the FFVII-IX era that was my introduction to the series. That said, I agree with others in that I'd probably prefer new IP, like Octopath, and/or FFXV spin-offs. Above all, though, give us DQXI in the West on Switch at the same time as for other formats - and soon.
I think I'm more likely to buy the chibi version so long as it is properly optimised and running at a smooth 60fps
I've ready played through the full fat game... Would much rather have a different experience on switch. Though, I gather a lot of others haven't played it at all...
dont bother yourself make the chibi version to switch..
better make the new FF series
I'd be more than happy with the Pocket Edition, with one proviso: physical controls!
@MarcelRguez that avatar <3
I remember when they announced dq11 for the nx then withdrew that statement, to later again announce it.
this could be that situation, tabatha obviously broke a NDA in some sort, so he is probably damage controlling as with dq11 back then
@clvr Not the first time someone gives it a little love. Thanks <3
I would be more than happy if Square were to bring any of the following to Switch:
1. Final Fantasy VII Remake
2. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition
3. Kingdom Hearts III
4. Dragon Quest XI
5. Secret of Mana 3D Remake or...
6. Seiken Densetsu Collection
What do you say, Square? Expecting one or even two from the above isn't being unreasonable.
There's simply no way the real version will ever work on Switch. Period. If it's coming to Switch, it's the Derp (Pocket) Edition for sure.
I'd be happy with anything they do with XV but man...as much as it pains me to say, the FF series really just needs to die. It's so broken and just a mere shadow of the glory it used to be.
@MarcelRguez it'll never be enough <3
@Switch99 I would love any of these too. I imported Seiken Densetsu Collection and it is stellar. Never played 3 (since it never came or here) but it's incredible. Cool story and dialogue, day/night system, tons of branching paths, etc.
Hopefully it's something a bit more than just the Pocket Version. I never finished XV and wouldn't mind playing it on the Switch. But that game is so visually stunning that the Pocket Version just doesn't do it justice
Mark my words : FF15 Nintendo Switch version = the Pocket Edition + Physical control 100%
@Anti-Matter Did you PLAY FF15?
With Unreal Engine 4 running well on the Switch, i could see there be a higher chance that Kingdom Hearts 3 ends up on the Switch, i haven't played FF15 yet though, so if they manage to get it running, ill be all over the Switch version.
@invictus4000 Oh man, you've got me wanting to import it myself now! Either way, it's really deserving of a western localisation.
Honestly, I'd be happy with some HD editions of older entries in the series. Like 7, 8, 9, and 10.
@Aaron09
I have never played FF XV before, but from the latest trailer I watched before it released, my sibling gameplay, FF XV = Nah !
Miitopia from 3DS was Much much much better than Boring FF XV. Even my local game shop owner also agreed with my opinion, FF XV = Blah after he played for several hours.
I'm fine with any version. Obviously the better the better, but as long as I can play it.
@Switch99 I've been thinking about putting together a YouTube video overview of the import just to help English speakers see if they want to buy it.
I still haven't beat the game on my PS4 yet. The story just didn't really pull me in, though I love basically everything else about the game. The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is fun, it just lacks a solid story which IMO is paramount to the Final Fantasy series.
That said, if they released the actual game (not that weird pocket edition) on the Switch I would probably buy it again and give it another go.
Believe it or not, I've never actually played a Final Fantasy title (unless you count Bravely Default). If XV came to Switch, I think I'd finally jump into the series. Let's hope!
Just look into bringing the FFVII remake to the Switch and forget FFXV. That way FFVII may get a release date the same as the other platforms
I prefer the chibi style over the emo boyband. But that's all, FF 15 is not an attractive game to me, not the premise, the characters, world setting or combat.
If the hardware is the problem for porting that game squeenix should make ff6 remake for switch, that would be cheaper, easier, less hardware intensive and they would win my money.
Don't worry about XV. It's a huge game and I would love to have it on the Switch, but they should look into optimizing the episodic FFVII. I think more people would be into that. We already have the Cloud amiibo.... wink*wink
@invictus4000 That sounds awesome! Please let me know if you do. I've never played a non-English game and I'd love to check it out.
I think it will be a lot easier to bring Final Fantasy VII Remake to the Switch than Final Fantasy XV due its complicated Luminous Engine.
But, SquEnix, keep one thing in mind: bring your "Final Fantasies" for the Switch and I'll buy 'em all.
@Anti-Matter Lets hope, but after FF XIII and XV and have learned not to preorder anymore final fantasys
Here's an idea:
Instead of releasing what would be destined to be a butchered port, or releasing a half-hearted port of the mobile equivalent, why not make a big game, from the ground up, for the Switch? Why do developers and fans alike think that the Switch either needs more small scale games (it doesn't) or ports of games that it can't even handle? We're talking about a console that is capable of PS3+ levels of power, for God's sake! Developers could invest some real resources into it, and the console would have an EXCLUSIVE library of AAA titles! To me, AAA doesn't mean sharing a library with the competition. I would love to see games with real scope, substantial budgets, etc. It can be done!
@BanjoPickles I hope you purchased Mario + Rabbids then. That's exactly what you're asking for - a AAA title, made exclusively for Switch by a third-party developer. I just picked it up myself yesterday. Despite the positive reviews, I'm still surprised by how good it is.
@Reignmaker
Next week. It has been on my radar since E3. It is exactly the sort of game that I was talking about!
I will NOT buy FFXV pocket edition and I sure as hell hope nobody else does. Either port full version over with less graphical fidelity or they can pass this up. It's no problem.
STAPH
STAPH TAUNTING ME
@Jeronan I didn't think that I would enjoy FFXV, but by the end, it was pretty good. Yeah, the story is up to FF weird standards, but the best part about it is the bond with the characters. Also, I played FFXIV for years and agree that it's better.
I believe that FFXV is around 60GB on my PS4 right now, so it would be interesting to see how they pull this off.
If they're just going to put a phone game on Switch then what's the point? No thanks.
Just put XVI on. Though given how long XV's development took it won't be out for several more console generations anyway.
Ok, so Luminous Engine bad, Unity and Unreal Engine 4 good. SE, pay a dev to port, be done with it.
It won't happen!
