Today sees the launch of the Expansion Pack for Nintendo Switch Online, an extension of the current subscription service that adds a library of Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive titles, as well as the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC.
Opinion may be divided as to how good a deal this is, but a whole bunch of 16- and 64-bit classics will soon be conveniently playable on Switch, and — despite the groans from our wallet — the chance to play Banjo-Kazooie and F-Zero X on modern hardware (both of those admittedly coming 'soon' rather than dropping at launch) is certainly cause for celebration.
But where should we begin? Well, Nintendo Life readers have already had their say and ranked every NSO Nintendo 64 game and every NSO Sega Mega Drive game in terms of sheer quality. BUT with the small library of games available, perhaps you're eager to play something you haven't burned through a thousand times before (hi there, Sonic 2). Maybe you're intrigued to try out Winback or dip into Phantasy Star IV for the first time?
Let us know below which of the launch games you'll be inaugurating your Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis Nintendo Switch Online Apps with today (or, technically, tomorrow in Japan and Europe).

For just 9 n64 games, I will skip the expansion pack for now.
Maybe when Nintendo adds more content to the expansion pack, it will get valuable enough for me to grab it.
Not in Europe! Doesn't launch here until tomorrow. 😞
I'll probably play Ocarina of Time first. I'm determined to finally complete it this time, as I never did on either the N64 or the 3DS!
@Clyde_Radcliffe what dungeon did you end up getting to?
None. It's too expensive.
On Mega Drive I'll play Ecco The Dolphin first, followed by Gunstar Heroes as I've never played them but heard good things about them.
i will be playing Nothing 64 for $0 on a console that doesn't exist
Still not sure about getting the expansion pack, maybe I will even consider canceling the current subscription in the near future with Smash´s DLCs over and no MK9 on the horizon. But if I decide to get it, I would definitively wait for Majora´s Mask and Banjo Kazooie
Nothing, money for old rope - plus I've got such a backlog of current gen stuff that even thinking about this sort of retro tomfoolery is a joke.
Likely skipping the expansion pack, not worth the extra cost.
I'll be doing Super Mario 64 and Streets of Rage 2 first
I can't wait for this great service. I never owned a N64, and I only played some of these games. So I can't wait.
Well this article headline was definitely one way for me to run and grab my switch to see if i was going mad thinking it was tomorrow!
(already made the mistake this week of inviting friends over for a game night tomorrow, thinking Mario Party Superstars is out tomorrow when it's actually Friday! xD... At least we can try out MK64... We're N64 era kids)
I’ll start with games I’ve never played before, like Winback and Castlevania Bloodlines. Also curious about Yoshi.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I think I got up to just before the Spirit Temple.
Ocarina of time. And for MD I don’t know. Maybe none.
#FamilySubscriptionRulesOtherwiseTooExpensive
I’m waiting for this to go solo. I can’t justify renting DLC, and I feel $25 of the price is the Animal Crossing stuff.
Insane that we have to wait until the early morning.
Sadly, after actually seeing that list, I’d be paying to play maybe 2 games. Nothing else interests me enough to justify that price.
I'm not getting it yet but probably will in the future because I've never played Banjo-Kazooie before (or Ecco the Dolphin for that matter).
Man, there are going to be some choice games eventually on this service. Waiting to pull the trigger, myself as I have enough games to play this month! Looking forward to banjo and Kazooie. But I do hope they release an N64 mini at some point. I honestly couldn't see them ever reproducing the N64 controllers...but here we are...and I am happily surprised
Winback and Mean Bean Machine - but not until tomorrow!
@sanderev @WatsonWatson I'm really excited to play Sin And Punishment and Dr Mario 64 for the first time. Never played Winback either.
Also looking forward to playing Yoshi's Story on the move, think it will make such a good handle game just like Yoshi's Island on GBA!
I will get it when more games I want are on it. Right now there's only four games I like on the N64 and none of them are the ones I want on the Sega Genesis.
Need to sort this when I get home.
The problem with the Sega games is I own most of them through other collections already. TBH, I almost hooked up my N64 for WINBACK a couple of months ago. So, needless to say, I freaked when it was announced!
I'm particularly interested in Paper Mario, and Banjo Kazooie.
But they aren't launch titles for the service.
That's if I even get the expansion pass, it depends on what the pro-rated discount is.
@Gwynbleidd Internet outrage is a really poor gauge of public opinion on something. It's just the people who make the most noise about things, not the average consumer.
It's a toss between replaying Ocarina of Time after a while (last playthrough was around 2012, I think) or playing Sin & Punishment for the first time.
For Genesis, I want to get back to Phantasy Star IV. I really dug it back when I had the Genesis Collection on my PS2, but I only got about 10 hours into it.
Then, maybe I'll replay Star Fox 64 and Winback. I imagine Star Fox 64 will be as fun as always, but I'm really not sure about Winback. I have fond memories of it, but I also clearly recall thinking the graphics were dull and the gameplay repetitive. We didn't have Metal Gear Solid on the N64, so we only had Winback as an alternative. When I finally played Metal Gear Solid on my PC, a couple of years later, it was miles and miles beyond Winback. Still, it's worth revisiting.
Grew up on th n64 and have ways or other versions of most of these games elsewhere..(even the unrealesed fantastic xbox remake of goldeneye). Don't care animal crossing or for sega games unless its sonic adventure 2... Ill be waiting until the expansion pack is worth it for me ...tho i rather they offer those games outright for purchase so I can pick my favorites..but hey then how will Nintendo keep making money off of me buying the same games over and over
@Clyde_Radcliffe
It might release the same time because of time difference.
@WhiteTrashGuy The Mega Drive app will have third party games on it too though which should differentiate it from the Mega Drive Collection. I am hoping for James Pond Robocod!
What's a Sega Genesis?
Probably Mario Kart 64. Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64 all have superior versions elsewhere and, although I'd like to try the likes of Mario Tennis and Sin and Punishment, I don't think I'm ready for anything new at this time.
If Paper Mario was amongst the launch titles I'd jump straight into that.
I can’t bring myself to do it. Toss in some 1080, Wave Race and XtremeG and it’ll be more difficult for me to deny… but not impossible.
I’m getting it because it’s cheap and split the cost between 8 people in a family sub
@Clyde_Radcliffe I’ll give Sin and punishment a go as well, but I’m not usually into rail shooters.
I also want to give Phantasy Star IV another shot, although I recall having a difficult time figuring out the effects of different spells, etc. because there’s not much in the way of explanation. Refreshing, but challenging! And the cutscenes are a delight.
I'm not grabbing the expansion pack at the moment. It's not because I'm offended or aggrieved at the pricing. There's just nothing in either console I have a desire to upgrade for at the moment. Maybe when they add Waverace or 1080 or some other N64 and Sega Genesis games I haven't played on ages, I'll do it.
@1UP_MARIO I think it's cheap too. Less than the price of a cup of coffee a month in the UK. 🤷🏻♂️
My odds of a launch purchase remain slim even though I do have some gaming funds left for the period - there are ever more sale items competing for these funds as well, and I don't even know if they would be enough anyway - the expansion is only set for tomorrow here, so no adjusted price info yet.
Like I said before, I see myself more likely to consider the upgrade in late December - or, worst case scenario, in early July.
I'm interested in the official ad talking about "enhanced resolution" and whether it will be using the same emulator as the 3D All Stars collection for SM64.
I'm not expecting enhanced textures in the same way SM64 did in the collection, but if it can have the same resolution for polygons than that's much better than I was expecting.
And for £3 a month, people really need to stop complaining...
This might be a dumb question, but does anyone know if you subscribe to the NSO Expansion Pack through an EU account, but your Animal Crossing: New Horizons save file is linked to an American account, are you able to play the Happy Home Paradise DLC through the American account?
I just think it's funny they added winback
is a single joycon suitable to play n64 games? or do they require both or a procontroller for multiplayer?
I can understand people not wanting this, as if you have no interest in these retro games then just ignore, but I am looking forward to having the N64 games. But that's coming from someone who has gamepass but only uses my XBOX Series S to play Rare Replay... I'm currently paying £11 a month to play N64 games on my Xbox... You can tell what my gaming tastes are
I totally forgot this was out today! My N64 controller ships tomorrow.
I’ll be starting out with Winback and Star Fox 64. I’m excited to play all the N64 titles though. I’m not really interested in the Sega games because, well, I truly think they’ve been beaten dead well beyond NES and SNES. How can you have a SEGA AGES release of Sonic 2 and also a NSO release of Sonic 2, and also a release of Sonic 2 on that Genesis collection…. Like, there’s clearly a “definitive” version of it so why even try to “sell” the others.
I’m glad we have an option for Genesis, true, but right now, besides MUSHA and Castlevania, I don’t see value in it because I have all of the others on some form or another. But for those that don’t have the Genesis games available to them elsewhere, you’re gonna have some fun!
I have an N64 and spent quite a pretty penny on my collection but having everything in clear HDMI with save states is going to be worthwhile to me. Plus no fear of the SRAM batteries dying and losing my progress!
I am just going to hope we get the Castlevanias for 64. Would’ve been really nice to have those for Halloween.
@Wyatt006 A 3DS KID?! that’s one hell of a generation to grow up on… that’s suuuuuch a high bar that was set for you with the 3DS’ massive library. I still love my 3DS, and up until Metroid Dread came out, I was still playing my 3DS mainly. Now I’m back on New Horizons because the DLC re-sparked my motivation to play it. I’ve been spending tons of bells re-arranging my island’s layout.
As someone who wasn't alive during the 64's life, this will be my first time experiencing these games. Except for Mario 64, and both Zeldas. (I didn't have a Wii or Wii U, I was a 3DS kid.) And I am so excited to try these games! But yeah this is WAY too expensive, I say as I pull out my wallet.
I've never played a nintendo 64 game, aside from Mario 64. So, all of them!
OMG I thought it was going to be released on the 28th, I don't know why.
I tried to get my suscription but I don't know how to upgrade this. Is available right now? Can't find it on the eshop.
@3Daniel I would imagine N64 games would be very difficult on a single joy-con due to the number of buttons. You'd have no C-Button options for example which makes OoT impossible to play.
@luxoricious it isn't there yet, which I was expecting an option to pre load myself. But no, I'm guessing it'll appear when it launches.
@Bentendo1609 Eh, but Expansion Pack available only as 1-year description, so... You maybe talking about usual description(NES/SNES).
@Bentendo1609 I was more curious for mario kart 64. dr mario 64. even mario party when it eventually releases. for the multiplayer.
@MetalMan The SEGA Mega Drive's name in the US.
@Bentendo1609 "And for £3 a month, people really need to stop complaining..."
Exactly. All these games would've cost a fortune on Virtual Console and I'm not bothered about "ownership" as I don't intend to play them for years on end. Happy to play them as and when new additions get added or I would get too overwhelmed anyway and not complete anything.
@Vyacheslav333 No as in when you break down the amount (divide it by 12) it equates to only £3 just paid upfront.
@Bentendo1609 Okay. But still, you can buy ONLY 1-year description.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yeah, and they're inevitably enough to be adding further DLC 'expansions' too when games such as Splatoon 3, Breath of the Wild 2 and Pokemon Arceus come along for example. Animal Crossing will just be the start. And all for less than a Starbucks coffee a month.
If they add more dlc for games in the future I might get it as long as they stay on the service indefinitely and if the service actually saves you money on them. I could not care less about old games, except for a few GameCube titles.
@Vyacheslav333 Yeah, which is only the same as Microsoft and Sony offering 12 month options that work out cheaper than monthly... the difference being, neither Sony or Microsoft are £3 a month in any shape or form.
The Expansion pack is overpriced as it is right now.
I’ll wait. If there’s enough content, I might buy it. I think Nintendo should deliver more good content first. The longer I wait the more bang I get for my buck, anyway.
In the meantime I’ll buy the AC DLC and expect that will keep me busy for months.
@RavenWolfe81 I can't see GameCube or Dreamcast ever coming due to the size of games being collectively held in a single application. And cloud streaming just doesn't work and wouldn't be appreciated similar to Kingdom Hearts.
A less predatory company would sell all of the pictured N64 games for $30 rather than charge an annual fee to merely hire them.
I think OoT again and after that MK64 when I subscribe next month, but not invest much time to 100% because I won't be able to continue it every time I like it after my subscription is over, it will be like I lost my save, I'll continue my Wii U saves for 100%. If they give us an option to buy some games maybe...
I looked through my collection. I have 15 of the 16 N64 games — all but Sin & Punishment which I have on VC. I have access to originals/versions/sequels to all but two of the Genesis (Mega Drive) games. Can't justify $45 (USD) for that. Waiting for more content or less price.
I refuse to pay that extortionate expansion pack price
I'll be upgrading for 30 bucks today..not going to follow the cry b@bies
Skipping for now... too many other games to play so I'll save the cash.
Do we know at what time the Expansion Pack goes live?
If I were to download it, I'd probably go with Gunstar Heroes or Ristar for the Mega Drive (I kind of refuse to call it Genesis) and Dr. Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.
I'm playing the game of voting with my money by not participating in this trashy project.
I'll wait until Banjo is available before even considering buying the expansion.
@Clyde_Radcliffe yea I’m gonna pay less than a small small bottle of water each month
Personally, I think the price of 40€/year, which equates to 3.33€/month is reasonable. That’s just an additional amount of 1.60€/month for N64 and Mega Drive games. I‘ll definitely upgrade my membership when it launches in Europe tomorrow.
@Bentendo1609 You're probably right. So if they can add more dlc like expansions to Splatoon 3, Metroid or BotW 2, I'd get this. All they need to do is announce a road map of upcoming drops and tell us if they're adding more dlc and I'd feel alot better about the $50 but I don't care about N64 games that I put 100s of hours into as a teen, anymore.
Right now the value is just far too low. There's an actual N64 with most of these games on the same shelf as my Switch, and I'm not interested in Genesis.
I'm already playing ocarina of time on my wii u, and I only had to pay for it once back in 2014!
@Gwynbleidd despite all of the downvotes and whining, the NSO expansion will be very successful
I’ll be sure to play Gunstar Heroes!………On my emulator.
Still not live for NA region.
How much for just the expansion? I thought they would reveal pricing to upgrade to the expansion? I'm still waiting to see that. (I lean toward passing due to its price, though.)
Honestly, the price of the expansion pack is completely outrageous, no way I will support it financially. I already own most of these games on other consoles and only had to pay once. Honestly if Nintendo wants to make more money off of online, they should start by actually offering voice chat on the console.
Out of the current offerings, I have other ways to play the games I'm interested in. I'm really happy I decided to invest in Star Fox 64 3D, OoT 3D, and MM 3D now. As for the excellent Golden Axe, Internet Archive's arcade library fills that niche nicely.
I don't think the base NSO was worth the price for me, and this new pay tier is no incentive to change my mind. For me, its just too expensive for what you get. I'd prefer the option to buy some select VC games with a lower entrance for online play.
Star Fox 64 from the N64 offering
and
Castlevania : Bloodlines on the Sega Genesis offering
I find the price point unjustifiable so I will be staying away for now.
I really look forward to Mario Golf and Sin & Punishment, hope we get Snowboard Kids... but since buying the Oled I have a bad feeling playing Switch Online cause of burn-in. They really need to get rid of the border... though I read even playing 4:3 games daily for a long time on an Oled screen can cause screen problems.
None, these paid subscription services are not my cup of tea. I only wish there was an n64 mini available. Oh well. Lots other great games out there to buy and own.
Probably Mario 64. Assuming it's the original NA version and not the shindou version that the All-Stars one is based on, I'll be able to practice speedrunning tech.
too expensive, too few contents.
Not good value, no sale here.
I plan to play Sin and Punishment as I have always been interested in the series but haven't got a chance to play it yet. As for Sega, I'll definitely try my luck with Shinobi III. I loved Shinobi for PS2 and the 3DS version was great as well
@Gwynbleidd Doesn't really apply in the same way, internet opinions just don't translate into the average consumer opinion. Most people are in the silent majority who simply don't interact on Social Media platforms, they just browse.
Even the 16k up vs 93k down completely proves it. The video has over 1m views, so only around 10% of people who watched it even reacted to it. Another famous example, Infinite Warfare has over 3m down votes on its launch trailer, still sold over 13m copies.
For what i would play it's way too expensive to me but maybe if more games/systems that interest me come to it i might consider it
I'm just gonna wait when Sega Mega Drive Classics Collection goes on sale again for 15 eur or so and get that instead.
Great selection to start, but with the Megadrive i have all the games on original hardware or raspberry pi builds.
Hi all, go make 7 friends (It's a big internet). And then you pay about £7.50/year.
If, like most Switch owners you play ACNH, it's a decent deal.
@Gedgenator "Honestly, the price of the expansion pack is completely outrageous"
How is the equivalent of £3 a month (or whatever your regions conversion is) completely outrageous? Some of you do make me chuckle.
Also, 50 dollars for one year still isn't bad IMO. That still only equals ~$4.17 USD per month which is dirt cheap compared to other services. That also includes all of the NES and SNES games, as well as online play so I think its fine
I’m getting it but it’s because it will be at a discount since I already had a membership
I’m sticking to the n64 games on my Wii U for now. I really hope Nintendo unbundles Happy Home Paradise from the Expansion Pass eventually and just offers the N64/Genesis game library separately for a lower price, as I was never a huge fan of Happy Home Designer.
So encouraging to see a high percentage of people rejecting this nonsense. I have to say I didn't see this coming from Nintendo fans and I am pleasantly surprised.
When does it drop in EST?
I was really looking forward to playing Star Fox online, but no way will I pay that much to rent a bunch of games, most of which I won't have time to play. Hopefully if very few people buy into this Nintendo will consider reducing the price
Nintendo’s Expansion Pack pricing is exactly what I needed. It made me take a hard look at the way I use my Switch, and what I want from it. I found that:
Nintendo hasn’t offered anything new nor anything old I’m interested in for a long time now. The games I’m interested in are ported from other system’s back catalogues. They look and run worse on Switch, and cost more than they do on the systems they where intended for. (Why am I paying the Nintendo tax?!)
Checked the current catalogue of XBOX Game Pass games, to learn how Nintendo’s offering compares. Found 5 Games from my Switch wish list, totalling 136 €, and at least 10 games interesting ones that are not on Switch. Game Pass is 120 € a year.
Long story short, after more than 25 years of Nintendo, I’m done. Getting a XBOX Series S. Greedy pricing made me re-evaluate and come to the conclusion I’d rather pay more for a better service. Should have made the switch from Switch a year ago, I would have saved money.
How many hours until it drops?
So what time does this go live??
None. Too expensive.
The ones I would play, however... already have on Mario 3D All Stars, and the Zelda collection disc for Gamecube 👍
@Bentendo1609 Yes, and I think not having C controls will be rare even with two joycons. We'll see how natural it feels, but it will be weird seing the buttons on screen not matching the ones on the joycon.
@Bentendo1609 Yeah, I was going to mention the enhanced resolution for N64 games that no one else seems to be talking about. The Mario64 game included in the expansion pack is also different from the 3D All Stars version. The online version is the American version while the AllStars Mario64 copy was the Japanese rom. It’s unclear where the Genesis emulation comes from: Are these from the Classics Collection (bad emulation) or from Genesis-Mini (good emulation)?
Logged on at midnight to download it and then this morning… still not there… and in this time I’ve seen so much negative feedback I realized I do not need to spend $30 to play 9 N64 games I already have. Definitely not buying now. You snooze you lose Nintendo
I plan to get the expansion sub, but I it funny that Nintendo has been pretty quiet about when it drops outside of the day itself.
I think they accounted for backlash, but overestimated just how much good will they had on this front. Like, of course they're still gonna make bank, but they cant pull this again too soon.
Not buying, and I've got most of the Genesis games on the Classic. I also have OoT3D. Had they offered these on the eshop, I would have snapped up StarFox 64 and maybe Mario 64.
I'm not planning to get the expansion pack at launch, but I may upgrade later if more is offered. I don't have Animal Crossing, I still have the Wii U hooked up with all of the N64 games I would want to play, and I have the Sega Genesis Collection. But if more systems or DLC gets offered, I might change my mind.
Probably start with Yoshi's Story and Strider. Honestly, I plan on playing through all of the N64 games aside from Mario 64 which I played through last year.
@RandomDave Man I tried playing Game Pass on an Android tablet. The cloud versions are terrible! The input lag is the worst I have ever seen for a gaming service. The resolution drops constantly. Download play via Xbox is probably the only way to really play Game Pass. If you can download on PC, then that way too. The funny thing is that the cloud games on Switch played much better then this. Go figure?
Not giving them extra money for this. I personally hope this expansion pass thing fails.
This expansion pack move really put the nail in the coffin for me. I don't plan on buying anymore Nintendo consoles or pay for any more services until they get their act together and stop being greedy. Boy do I sure miss Iwata.
@WhiteTrashGuy I am in much the same boat. I love everything Nintendo (was a 3DS ambassador) but just can't justify it when I own Sega Genesis collection and hooked up my N64 just a couple of months ago. Maybe when they have more games on the N64 that I don't own.
I'm definitely getting the expansion pack- for my situation it's an amazing value. I'm on a family plan with 8 of us and every person would have wanted the animal crossing expansion so we're saving a ton of money, plus getting the N64/Genesis games that most of us were interested in as well.
@Zeropulse
3DS Ambassador as well.
Not paying extra $30/year for this.
PSA: you can get the superior, permanent versions of Castlevania Bloodlines, Sonic 1&2 and Contra Hard Corps on eShop.
Other- waiting for Paper Mario and banjo
@Clyde_Radcliffe OMG yes, we need James Pond on the Mega Drive app.
I would love Virtual Bart and Valis III too.
sigh I wish I was, but that price is egregious for the few N64 games I'm interested in. Add smash, dk64, and the Mario parties on top of the ones they've promised to release later and I'll reconsider
None, because I'm not paying Nintendo's rip off prices until they make it worth it
@ChromaticDracula Sonic 2 is also being released as part of another collection coming to Switch: Sonic Origins. Notably this will include Sonic 3 for the first time. As for “definitive version,” I think we need to look past that. Sonic 2 Ages and the Christian Whitehead version are both the way to go. The Whitehead version made a couple of mistakes: widescreen only mode. This is egregious because it’s for 4:3 on iPad! So it does exist! And should have been a toggle on-off feature. The second mistake is a very slow look-up, look-down feature. It happens instantly on the original and is a 2 second delay on the enhanced version making it almost unusable. Then why is it still must play? Whitehead added a whole new level and boss fight. Plus added new areas only accessible to Knuckles. (Whitehead also made the first boss fight boring by making the fight longer but that’s another issue. So yeah, I think from this point on games will have two definitive versions: The best original mode and the best enhanced mode. See Resident Evil series for good examples of these: hilarious dialog in originals but better graphics in enhanced. No definitive version.
Am I the only one who thinks that the genesis games is a weird addition and wish they weren’t there so the pack would be cheaper?
Actually I'll probably be playing the AC expansion first...
This is not the worth the price. I will not be purchasing it.
Tying it to the Animal Crossing DLC was a huge mistake. If you don't want that, then you are really paying a lot for just the N64/Genesis games.
None of them.
In december will also be the last time i subscribe for Nintendos online service.
After that i'll just wait for the steam deck.
@Bentendo1609 why not say it's just 10 pence a day then? No matter what increments you divide it into, their competitors plans still provide better value.
As much as I want the pack honestly right now I am focused on other games so I will probably wait to subscribe until I actually want to play one of the games on the service. With the games coming out it doesn't make sense to subscribe right now for me.
@Bentendo1609 "Yeah, and they're inevitably enough to be adding further DLC 'expansions' too when games such as Splatoon 3, Breath of the Wild 2 and Pokemon Arceus come along for example"
Do you have a concrete source for this information, outside of some random youtuber or your imagination? Nintendo has made no such statement, to my knowledge.
@Tyranexx Yeah, same. The best versions of the N64's Zeldas are on 3ds. They're improved in so many ways. I know Majora's Mask is a contentious issue but I much prefer the accessibility of the 3ds version. It's my favourite 3ds game. And the European Special Edition is beautiful. I've put over 500 hours into both those titles on my original 3ds.
Shout out to Golden Axe as well, great game. If SEGA still own the ip they should give it a rough, medieval feeling remake. With dragons.
In terms of this Expansion Service, the main thing that is edging me towards not getting it is that we won't actually own the games. All our saves will be gone when the Switch eventually dies.
None unless they add pokemon stadium and 2 for online and Diddy kong racing then ill be sold for now no
A big nooo thank you on this for me, crazy expensive for renting 20-30 year old games.
None. I don’t think 50 bucks for expansion is worth the price right now.
I will be getting this mostly because my parents and my daughter who are on separate Switches just for Animal Crossing. Each of them may get another 300+ hours out of the game and with the pro-rated fees I am hoping it will improve in the next year.
I debated long and hard on it. It also helped that my dad was willing to chip in on the difference since he plays it the most. (My dad, who is over 70, has put in 500+ hours into Animal Crossing, managing to complete every collection except the museum).
@Perryg92 same... and now I'm reading the article!! 🤣🤣
@WhiteUmbrella that's a very good point... 10 pence per day is nothing is it. People spend £1.29 on a McFlurry and don't bat an eyelid... so less than 3 McFlurry's a month sounds even more amazing for multiple games and content for AC so far.
@thinkhector I would presume they will be using the non "Gay Bowser" ROM globally, so I'm not sure if the American file had that removed already.
@RavenWolfe81 Upcoming drops would be revealing content they probably want to keep secret though for the time being. But I understand why it would make it more financially appealing.
Really guys, if you want to replay Ocarina of Time, play the 3DS version of it. It's soooo much better! I love it.
@Gedgenator I don't see why voice chat in this day and age is such a big deal. What with WhatsApp, Discord, Twitch, etc being there on multiple devices it is so so easy to setup a group voice chat for any platform being played on.
I feel the base NSO is worthwhile, so hopefully that gets an update soon for those of us in that camp.
Hoping for Gargoyles Quest II.
In the Netherlands it wil be tommorow. Going to play Oot! Love that game. And for the first time i wil be playing Lylat Wars ( Star Fox). Mega Drive is great with friends.
I went on to upgrade to it and couldn’t find. Now I’ve read where it is not until this evening here in the U.S. I guess. Oh well I’ll have to wait a bit longer I guess
As of now an vast majority are simply not getting the service and that’s great!
zero interest in Genesis. What a waste -where are my GBA games?!
Im not sure yet as i never owned the 64 so those games are new to me and so does anyone think i should go ahead and get the up grade
haven't played a lot of these games, my pop tells me that the games they have now aren't even close to the games of yore.
I will sign up when F zero x is released. It’s the only way I can think to let Nintendo know that I want a GX remaster. Screaming in their ears hasn’t worked 😀
None of them. I'll choose a N64 game that's not for sale to tribute the console. Maybe Hybrid Heaven
For all the complaining and moaning, still 30% of the poll is excited to buy it and play Zelda again. Again.
This is why Nintendo will forever take advantage of you. See, you have to complain AND not give them money.
Perhaps Mario 64 first. I wanna see if it’s the shindou edition or not. As for the genesis probably sonic or something.
@WatsonWatson
Best part of Phantasy Star IV to me is that it respects your time. The Macro system is brilliant for burning through random battles and even unlocked more powerful combination attacks for bosses. In addition, the games walk speed is crazy fast for a 16 bit RPG. Plus the difficulty balance is just right. It’s challenging, especially the boss battles. But you don’t have to grind like a classic Dragon Quest game. It’s more about strategizing your party’s techniques and abilities (two different things in the game, Techniques use TP and each Ability has a limited number of uses that refills when you rest at an inn) to overcome the bosses.
And the music. The epic soundtrack. Very rare to see a JRPG with a damn near grunge and metal soundtrack. It’s very industrial with heavy bass and really well done FM guitars. Ooze (the theme of the final boss) is burned into my memory.
@Greatluigi its the western version
None, i'm passing on the expansion pass. Value is just not there and I have other ways to play these same games.
I really want it, but no way I'm paying $80 a year for it. I've bought the games I already want to play on other systems. There's no way I'm paying more just to rent them.
Maybe I will upgrade when my Switch Online membership expires in early 2023. Unless something comes sooner that makes me want to pay up pay bit sooner. I reckon there will be discounted codes to make a saving by then.
@Bustacap wait really? How’d you know?
@Perryg92 Save your money, if more people don't purchase this expansion and it doesn't make as much money as the regular NSO, it will send a message to Nintendo that the price point is unjust for consumers to purchase. They should lower it as it's not right to up the price that much when we're experiencing an inflation and supply shortage.
I never got a chance to play through Yoshi's Story, so I'm excited for that. Very excited for Banjo Kazooie and F-Zero X once they come out.
I think Genesis games are a waste considering the Genesis collection. I got that on sale at one point.
Im not interested in any of the games, but I will be upgrading on all 5 of my switches to support tge struggling indie developers at Nintendo...
@arekdougy the emulation of the genesis collection is terrible and it has huge input delay
Does anyone know when the sega controller will be released in the U.K.?
Holding out for now as I just don’t want to spend that much for it , who knows if it’s not that popular maybe they will reduce the price ( unlikely )
@NinjaWaddleDee The only way for it to fail and let Nintendo know is to mention to other people not too purchase it, it's that simple. That way they will either offer more content than just what's shown or lower the price a good amount.
But so many are still so ignorant and they will cave in and buy it because they want too play Ocarina of Time for the 1000th time when so many more convenient options exist and yet they do it because they just like splurging their money frivolously.
Until they released Wave Race and Donkey Kong 64 I’m gonna spend my money on action figures instead.
@russell-marlow how about you let others decide what they do with their money?
@Bustacap How about I tell others what to do so it can all eventually benefit us all in the long run?
@Bustacap @russell-marlow
Get a room guys.
@russell-marlow its not for you to decide what "benefits us all". let people spend money on things they enjoy and keep your holier than thou attitude to yourself
I'm getting antsy, Nintendo, how much longer before they drop? I know I'm in the minority opinion, but I'm so excited to have N64 games on Switch. Sure, I wish it were cheaper, but Paper Mario on the go and Mario Kart 64 online is gonna be sick. I also finally get to experience Ocarina of Time in its original form, and I can play Banjo-Kazooie for the first time ever. I remember my family renting Yoshi's Story when I was like four years old, so that will be a nostalgia trip.
@Tyranexx I completely agree. The 3ds versions are the best of those games anyway.
@Not_Soos probably after the maintenance, so around ~7pm pacific
@russell-marlow Too true. You hit the nail on the head. There are much better options to play these games. Judging by the poll on this website, it seems like most people aren't planning on getting this as of now. So that's a good sign, at least for this demographic of hardcore fans.
@Bentendo1609 They really just need to say dlc from future games will be added and that would work for me. I don't have to know the specifics and we already know games like Banjo are coming, just not when. But yea, I'm glad you get what I'm saying.
And when people say "oh awesome online N64 games!" I have to roll my eyes. Have fun getting a group of people together who are all paying for this, to play 4 player Mario Kart 64. If nintendo included a matchmaking option with this, it may have made it worth it.
Removed - inappropriate
Waiting until Beetle Adventure Racing is added.
@russell-marlow again, stop assuming how other people spend their money
@Bustacap I already see how many companies entice consumers too spend their money. I'm just warning others.
Most people are financially illiterate after they leave high school.
I’m not against the Ecpansuon. I’m looking forward to Banjo Kazooie and Pokémon stadium. I’ll definitely pay 50 then
@Clyde_Radcliffe Ya I understand when you break it down it is cheap but now that its pricing is almost on par with xbox live and PS+ you have to start and see what they are offering vs what Nintendo is offering with their expansion pass add on (yes it is still cheaper but it is so close to their price now).
For example overall the online service is just abysmal on the switch vs what xbox and playstation is offering. Sure online stability varies from game to game but still bad on game like smash. It has no native VC and Messaging system.
The other systems are offering more modern games each month (lowest offering is xbox 360 for xbox and ps4 for playstation). While Nintendo highest is N64 games. Nintendo really needs to start rolling out games for each system they have monthly. Sure they have the free trial system but that all that is a free trial for x amount of time but still nice to have.
Xbox and PS also at times offer additionally discount prices on games that are already on sale but this isn't too much of a big deal and can just discount this with the NSO cheaper price.
The animal crossing DLC seems to be the biggest issues. If you are still playing animal crossing then that is great then the price is more justified but if you stopped playing animal crossing or never got it then you are playing just for N64 and mega drive/genisis games and for the price it really isn't worth it for people based on the poll.
I for one won't be jumping into the expansion pass (I don't see myself even renew the base NSO when it expires in Janurary) until they add more games and I see them adding games for each system each month (I think 2 per system is about right per month to make it worth while).
I'm gonna hold off til they add a few more to sweeten the pot. There's basically nothing in the expansion that I'm dying to play asap, so I'll probably stick it out until Paper Mario is released at least.
@Bustacap good to know. I've mostly been playing Phantasy Star IV so I didn't notice. I wonder if the Genesis Online games will be better.
Tell me they at least sorted out the Memory Pak functionality right? That didnt on either Virtual Console and while not saving your ghosts in Mario Kart is no big deal, games that needed the pak to save ride on whether this is possible or not (Rayman 2 comes to mind.)
Any idea when this is launching today? I've checked my Switch a few times during breaks at work and it still seems like it hasn't launched yet.
@Mauzuri
With the amount of downvotes on the trailer and the rest of the negativity towards it on other social media platforms it’s going to be a disaster for them and I hope it is so they are forced to change course for the better.
I'm just sticking to emulators. All of these games run brilliantly on just about anything with a computer chip in it. This expansion is terribly overpriced.
@kingbk likely after the maintenance, so around ~7pm pacific (7 hours from now)
Starfox 64, has to be played, again.........
For that price I want gameboy, gamecube, and/or wii games
I dont really have much interest in paying $50 for what they're currently offering but they'lll probably add more stuff eventually
@Gwynbleidd Most switch owners are going to open their system, see the update and have no idea this was even happening. Most of the folks who watch directs or YouTube videos about updates are in the vocal minority.
Yeahh I'll be getting it for Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64 and Banjo Kazooie down the line.
Again it's a no brainer more games will be added.
Aye. I'm conflicted, I want to stream some of the games especially cause I haven't played some of em. It would also be nice to revisit some N64 games also. This is prolly the most practical way to play them for me outside of emulators. Essentially, +$30 yearly for a bunch of games while old, I haven't played a lot of em. I gotta renew online soon, so this choice is tearing at me.
I could hardly justify the standard online subscription, but I hope whoever pays for it has fun!
A portable N64 is pretty great
Ahhhhh!
I just realized F-Zero X isn't launching with the service today. Come on...
Chances are that Nintendo won't get the numbers they're expecting, end up increasing the value proposition, then give early adopters some 'exclusive' content to paper the cracks like with 3DS.
Then again, they might.
I’m not getting duped by Nintendo on this. I have much better places to spend my money. This thing is just a little absurd for the family account. Even my 11 year old son says Nintendo’s gone nuts….
The SEGA Genesis should be included in the standard package as it more aligns with the S/NES era. However, I would pay a reasonable price for that a la carte for the easy online multi-player access.
The N64 and renting access to that Animal Crossing thing, no thank you. I will just out right buy it for the two people in my family who want it. That way they have it "forever". Or as "forever" as digital can be. Much better value (if you can call it that) in the long run.
The family package pricing is absurd. Even my daughter thinks this is not a good deal.
I'll go for it. I got Retro-Bit Controllers to go with the service. Since there's really no N64 Classic Edition coming, this is the only modern way to play N64 games. As for Genesis, I got the Genesis Mini, so I'm kind of good.
@ATaco How do you know everyone has played Zelda? I've never played Majoras Mask for instance and some members might be too young to have had an N64 and not be into emulation.
First i'll be installing the NSP.
Then I'll checkout the folder and rom name structure.
Then see if Goldeneye 007 works.
Otherwise I'll be playing Yoshi for the Yoshillionth time.
I'll just use an emulator or something instead. -.-
Out of the announced games the first N64 I would like to play is Paper Mario. When they release that I may add the extension pack to my subscription.
*in the US and Canada only, everywhere else will get it a day later.
Never played winback so I will start with that.
Also, I don't even see the option to upgrade to NSO+EP, so... I really don't know.
@russell-marlow there is a more convenient way to play OoT?
@NinjaWaddleDee your definition of most is cute 😂 only a third isn’t getting it for now.
@ValZ youll get an automatic discount based on the days left on your active sub (5ct/day individual, 9ct/day family)
Lots of you say PS plus is a better value. For me it’s worse than NSO. I like lot of the SNES and N64 games. But the modern games I get from ps plus are 50% a stupid fps I wouldn’t miss if it’s never been developed and other B titles. There are a maximum of 3-4 games a year that k get through the service that I really like.
I have more joy/fun (= value of a game) with the NSO.
Not immediately maybe at 20-25 N64 games I will. Star Fox 64 is a great Star wars like shooter so I will play it first.
None of them, Nintendo is out of their damn mind with this pricing.
@TKundNobody always the 3ds with a real cartridge and Master Quest or the failed Wii U VC.
@Clyde_Radcliffe How do you know everyone has played Zelda? I've never played Majoras Mask for instance and some members might be too young to have had an N64 and not be into emulation.
Remember that time that they remastered Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and put them on the 3DS?
@Tyranexx have all three 3ds games Super Mario 64 DS is the 🍒 on top.
As for the Genesis games I have the collection on Switch.
I'll probably upgrade once I'm able to get a N64 controller and "Paper Mario" is available. That's the biggest N64 game I never had a chance to play.
Just had a Nintendo email saying that my N64 pad is on its way.
Happy days !
@hypnotoad what region?
@Crono1973 What about people who didn't own a 3DS or those particular games? What about people who Switch is their first games console?
@Bustacap UK
“None of 'em - I'm not getting the NSO Expansion Pack, because I’m a Cheapskate, and only can afford cigarettes and tattoos!”
@kingbk @ValZ - Here's the direct link to order for US (Currently its grey and just says 'coming soon')
https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/#expansion-pack
I'm honestly more interested in netting an N64 controller which I'm assuming will go live along with the service, so I've been refreshing the link at the top of each hour. Probably will happen at 7p EST when the online service goes down for maintenance, from what it sounds like.
@Mauzuri
If it hurts them financially they will have to.
@SnesSwitch lol yeah I’ve never seen so many crybabies and cheapskates in my Life!
I’ll sign up when they announce the Cruis’n games, Diddy Kong, or Beetle Adventure Racing.
Removed - unconstructive
It's still not available, right?
Do we know how many hours left?
@Paddle1 I certainly hope that you don't eat out or go to the likes of Starbucks if you think that 9.6 cents/day is too much.
They shouldn't be charging extra for Genesis and N64 games in the first place, it's a disgrace. Isn't it $50 for this "service?"
@Jokerwolf Well, that says a lot about you. You'd rather steal the games than pay 9.6 cents a day to play them legally.
None of the games I'd play are there :
Goldeneye
Pilotwings
Blast Corps
WCW vs NWO world tour
Micro Machines 64
It's the ol hard skip for me. My back logs insane sized. I don't need retro gaming.
@SnesSwitch ...and beer!
I really like Gunstar Heroes, never played Ristar either so excited for that.
Guess I'll try out some N64 games once I get that controller, don't think I'll stay subscribed for long though at that price. Besides I still have a perfectly serviceable N64 hooked up with most of these games.
@B_Lindz Illegally pirate games or pay 9.6 cents a day to play them legally. I guess you made your choice.
@luxoricious ~5 hours left
I'll be waiting around until there's a bit more to offer. I am a bit miffed though that they are giving us this version of Ocarina instead of the remastered version on the 3ds.
@Amsterdamsters I actually own most of them. Don't assume things.
@Amsterdamsters You mean 0.4 cents an hour ?
I think the price is not what's really at stake here. If Nintendo had managed to add value to the experience (maybe by implementing leaderboards or achievements, or with updated graphics), most of us would be on board.
On the sega end, Im playing castlevania bloodlines.... on the castlevania collection I already own.
On the n64 end, I'm playing Mario 64.... on the Mario 3D all stars collection I already own.
I can't wait until I hear the reports as to how many people actually signed up for this rip off.
@HammerGalladeBro That's what I want to know. I keep checking and there's still no sign of it anywhere. Weird that they would say it's releasing today but then not release it at midnight like virtually everything else they put out.
@Mauzuri I'm in the US and we still don't have it here.
Sin and Punishment here I come...Again !
@Clyde_Radcliffe The point is that Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask has been released 5 times and this is the 6th time. People who haven't played it yet just aren't trying.
@RupeeClock For me, I only have to pay for 3 Months remaining, at first, then I will pay for a full year of it. So a full year of service costs $30, and at 6 Months Remaining, it's $15, so I have to pay about $7.50. I just hope we get Prepaid Cards that let you pay for the NSO Expansion Pack.
@BAN timezones exist, the world doesnt revolve around the us. release is the 26th in europe. theres a maintenance starting soon and the release will likely happen when its over, so around ~7pm pacific or ~4 hours from now
@SlimPieEats That's another reason I'm in no rush to upgrade
Heal the world. Let’s make it a better place.
For you and for me and for the entire human race.
Heard nothing about a launch time, I was assuming it would be 00:01 CET tonight but nope
Some people may own Animal Crossing and find value in this DLC, may not already have a Mega Drive mini and the collection of games on Switch, updated versions of the best N64 games to OWN on 3DS and the others to OWN on Wii. They might think this expansion pack holds some value to them. I am not one of those people, I'm not offended that the promotion is valueless to me, but I would like a better, less niche offer.
Guess I'll play the genesis collection and wonder why they'd pay extra
I believe Ristar and PS IV are on the Genesis Mini, which I have. Not sure if M.U.S.H.A. is on there, I'll double check. Those are the ones that intrigue me at present, just never got around to them previously. I really wanted to get through PS I through III before IV but eh, I'll figure it out.
For N64, Winback is one that interested me back in the day, but the frame rate was so trash by the time I first played it that I left it alone. If NSO improves this, I'll be interested again. Other than that, the N64 doesn't have what I want to play yet. Once F-Zero X comes I'll get interested (I've played GX, never X, but I'm starved for F-Zero so...). I'd like to see Banjo-Tooie, Hybrid Heaven, and Mischief Makers, and (doubtful) Mega Man 64 and I'll be inclined to drop coin on this. For now I can wait.
@BAN Maybe the service started and you just didn't notice? When my NSO expired, I didn't notice. No way of telling 😂
@Crono1973 except there are a decent amount of people like me who the Switch is thier first Nintendo consold lonb rnougj.
In my case last Nintendo console I had before was NES/OG Gamdboy
@MeloMan unfortunately Ristar isn’t on the Genesis Mini although I wish it was. It is on the Genesis Collection game which is on the Switch which you may be aware of. I would definitely like to play MUSHA as it is the only game here I have never played. It is on the Japanese version on the Mini though.
I'm going to hold off until they add Okama Gamsphere games to NSO.
insert I won't buy it because I wanted it to be less than free I'm buying the expansion pack because I've never played n64 games, and it's cheaper than buying a new and games.
@shonenjump86 Ugh, well that's annoying lol. Guess I'll just just wait until I inevitably get this subscription 🙄
This is a cheap cash grab with minimal effort on their part. They’re literally dumping a handful of ROMs on to the service and expecting us to pay double the price. We’re getting blinded by a couple of classic games & nostalgia, but we should be demanding more. I know lots of folk can’t get past how cheap it is and we should just pay it, but it’s not just £35 (or £3 quid a month or less than a pot noodle or whatever other subscription marketing ploys you want to use) it’s £35 every 12 months. So another 4 years in its life you’re up to £140, you’ve already potentially paid say £60-£126 for the SNES games that have been on there 3 years now. True, a couple hundred quid over a couple years in the grand scheme of things isn’t much, but Nintendo have 26 million (soon to be many more I’m sure) subscribers to NSO. So you get an idea of the income that’s generating for them, for that money IMO they simply should be giving us more of a service. Many aren’t happy, yet they don’t give a monkeys as they know people will pay it. This is hugely profitable for them, and they’re taking advantage of their fans, yet we keep making excuses for them, it’s absolutely crazy.
@DOZINCA_BEE samething Sony and Xbox does.and yes I know I have all 3 subscriptions
I'll probably pick this up but I'm waiting until the N64 controllers are back in stock. I was going to get a controller anyways, might as well try a year of the service to go along with it.
@DOZINCA_BEE Taking advantage? They could be charging a hell of a lot more. Based on past VC prices NES games were £5, SNES £8, N64 £10, Mega Drive £8, totalling up everything they have on the system is almost £1000.
As much as you get people dismissing others issues with the pack as "whining" i feel like the biggest issue i have is the simple fact that you cant actually buy the games.
I imagine there would be quite a few less people complaining about it if there was at least the option available to buy/keep the games, but tying the games Exclusively to a service is the problem I have.
There’s just not enough here for me to upgrade… eventually I will probably get the service. For now,, there just isn’t a service seller in that list of 64 and genesis games.
@Darkyoshi98 yeah but at least they offer huge libraries of games. They maintain dedicated servers which support potentially demanding online play. And they are fully transparent about what you will receive in return for your money, ‘you pay us £x per month and we guarantee you x content per month in return’, whereas Nintendo seem to be just drip feeding roms at their discretion. You have the option of monthly payments so you can cater the service to best value for your families needs. They don’t hide their back catalogues behind additional paywalls either.
@Clyde_Radcliffe A shame there are no other options besides this expansion pack then. After experiencing it for your first time Nintendo will charge you again to play it on your next console too.
I just got the Sega Genesis Classics collection, so none of 'em
Even though I'm not getting the extra subscription, I voted for Star Fox 64 and Streets of Rage 2, respectively.
@Trikeboy you could say that about any subscription service
Out of all these games, only three are exclusive to switch online: winback, Dr mario 64 and Musha.
I plan to sign my family group up for the expansion this week, maybe show the kiddos some of the new games they can access. Although none of us particularly NEED any new games to play right now, we’re looking forward to the ACNH DLC.
I picked Dr Mario 64 and Castlevania Bloodlines above, as I’ve never tried either before. There’s a bunch of N64 and Genesis games in there I’ll at least try quickly. And I’m dying to know if I can access the Jpn region games!
Hoping we’ll get Pilotwings 64, Star Control, Target Earth/Assault Suit Leynos in a future update.
@ATaco I'll be playing new games by then, I don't intend to play these N64 games for years on end but am just excited about playing games I've not played since the 90s or in many cases not at all. Not all of us have played these games to death.
@DOZINCA_BEE You have to remember Nintendo is a much smaller company than Microsoft of Sony who have so many avenues of revenue outside of gaming. A company like Nintendo can't afford to take the masses of losses Microsoft takes on Gamepass for, instance. Microsoft can afford to charge less, make huge losses and have fancier services/hardware because they're making billions on operating systems.
I'm not saying Nintendo is a "small indie developer" but like to like comparisons to the business models of absolute giants like Sony or Microsoft aren't really fair or rational. It's same reason Nintendo uses dated hardware for their console. I realise they're trying now to branch out into theme parks and movies but Nintendo has been and is mainly just a gaming company. They're closer to what SEGA was when they were making consoles and have you forgotten what happened to SEGA's hardware business? During the GameCube era there were genuine fears Nintendo would go the same way.
@Trikeboy
But individual consumers aren’t going to purchase every game available. Maybe one here one there, one bought with gifted eshop cards perhaps. Not to mention they go on sale every now and again.
@Clyde_Radcliffe If You got stuck on that one, the water temple is a B*** for you to complete. (Screw you water temple.)
@BongoBongo123 Truth be told, I missed out on the N64 back in the day outside of store demo units, so the 3DS versions of those games were my first proper tries at each. I loved the Zelda games and surprisingly enjoyed Star Fox 64 3D after not caring for the first two games when I played them on the SNES Classic. I figured if what was objectively the best game in the series wouldn't convince me, nothing would.
I was stoked at finally trying Golden Axe after hearing excellent feedback over the years. I agree; it would be cool to see a modern remake. Kicks out Monkey's Paw
I'd consider the expansion service if I were invested in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and had no other alternative to the games on offer, but I'm...content, shall we say...to just stick to $20 a year for now.
@Guitar_bard I loved the 3DS versions. Ocarina of Time 3D is one of the two games (the other being Super Mario 3D Land) that convinced me to get a 3DS. I was cheering when Majora's Mask 3D was officially announced. That Nintendo Direct made my day!
@PokemonDMG I believe we're both set for now.
All the comments wishing for voice chat are evidence most people on this site really don't know Nintendo at all. Voice chat is never going to happen. 🤷♂
@Bustacap Duuhhhh what’s a tiem zone? What’s a US? I not know things.
JK, this is a really stupid comment. Clearly it goes without saying that when I say “it’s weird that it doesn’t release at midnight like everything else they put out ” that A: I’m referring to my own time zone and not implying that it will be a simultaneous launch in every territory, and B: that I’m basing it on experience and not just making it up as I go, so what’s even the point of your comment? Maybe try to not be an ***** for no reason.
@Moistnado I don’t think so, I’ve been actively checking on it.
@Clyde_Radcliffe ‘like to like comparisons to the business models of absolute giants like Sony or Microsoft aren't really fair or rational’
All good points, and I entirely agree with you there. However that doesn’t mean we shouldn't Nintendo accountable when they’re offering substandard services
@Clyde_Radcliffe and this just circles back to my point that Nintendo fans just don't seem to care that they're being taken advantage of. Give money, consume product. Give more money, consume less product. Not really a revelation to me by this point though.
So according to this people only want to play the N64 games which makes this expansion even more of a rip off. $49.99 + tax for 8 games.
I can't believe Ocarina of Time now has a higher percentage than people not purchasing the expansion. Imagine spending $50 to play a game that you have been able to play on pretty much every Nintendo system since it was released (including the 3DS).
@Clyde_Radcliffe I'd adore to play the Ecco the Dolphin games caught my eye long ago, but the price is atrocious, I'll probably just end up emulating, didn't wanna tho
Can't say I care for the same price as an old cable TV subscription. What happens to our save files if we decide to drop it a while? I know I let my Nintendo Online account run out once, and I came back to notice a lot of data was missing. What are you guy's experiences?
@PokemonDMG I don't own a 3DS and I Think the Switch has a better handling and better display. I don't own a Wii U anymore and I can play the Wii U VC on the go or anywhere in the house.
Besides the game wise improvements of the 3DS version I can't see that the 3DS or the Wii U VC is better than the Switch.
@nimnio exactly. I liked Pokemon Sw/Sh. I stopped playing Pokemon after the 3rd Generation. Im happy to have a remake of Gen 4 coming to switch. im not the biggest fan of chubby but its a close remake which I think is fine.
I didnt preordered an OLED model. But seen it in hands it was awesome for a mostly handheld gamer. So I had to buy one ^^
I have NSO+EP behause i Like the N64 games. Don't care for Genesis. And AC is a nice bonus.
Do I think those are overpriced? Maybe. But I get lots of hours with joy/fun out of them (P Sw/SH has a save file with almost 200h). My old Switches (Launch & New Model; last one sold) clock in to have almost 3.500hours (144days). PS4/5 has better graphics but I only played around 600h with the PS4 (23.5days).
I play a lot while the tv is running or (before C) on the daily commute. I think the Nintendo products have a much better value (for me) than Sonys. As one who grew up with SNES/N64/PS im happy to play those classics
#ImmaterialValuesMayVary
@Crono1973 not true. I owned all of your mentioned systems. (I still have a N64). But I never owned Majoras Mask and a happy to final fill the gap. MM and till July SS were the only 3D Zeldas I've never played before.
@YoshiAngemon this not how it works. if you have 3 months remaining, than you get a discount for those remaining months to the full price and get a new sub for the next year
None. I'm not paying for something that's not worth it
Man I can't imagine anyaone under 30 enjoying most of these N64 games. The world of 1 joystick controls is a bizarre one to go back to. I guess I could be wrong though because I enjoyed NES games just fine after starting with PS1.
@TKundNobody NOW you tell me. Good thing I chose to wait until November to subscribe to it.
Sin and Punishment and MUSHA
Oh darn, I forgot to bitch and moan about 4 dollars a month.
I canceled my renewal, which is Dec 15th.
Will restart it at around the 28th, after my Christmas bonus. A bit easier on the wallet.
Seeing this list made me realise that I'm not really that bothered right now. Yoshi's Story is probably the only game I'm interested in playing at the moment and that's more because of nostalgia than it being any good. Mario 64, I have 3D All Stars and Ocarina, Majora's Mask and Starfox I played not that long ago on the 3DS. I'll wait on this till there's more that interests me.
Add WWF No Mercy to that library and then we'll talk, so basically never.
Sega Genesis collection is cheaper to buy-don’t get why it’s included?! And N64 games were for sale on all previous N services! Not gonna waste money on rental, unless Nintendo decides to sell us these games!
Once again.
If you think getting all these n64 games, all the snes games, all the genesis games, and the animal crossing dlc and potentially lots more dlc from other games is a bad deal, you're stupid. Not only are you stupid, you have no idea what a good deal is.
Specially if you're like me, have it set up with 7 of my friends and family on a family plan, after doing the math its basically 10 bucks a year per person to have access to all this. Compare that to ya know, sony and microsofts online services that cost waaaay more. But hey, nintendo can't win for losing.
There was a time where it cost over 50 bucks a year just to have basic online gaming for xbox. Prior to that, you had to pay between 10 and 20 bucks a month to just play certain games online on pc.
Imagine being mad about what, a 50 some dollar price tag for an online gaming service is a bad deal when you get all these bonuses?
NB4 BUT SONY AND MICROSOFT GIVE YOU FREE FULL GAMES.
Yes, 2 or 3 years after the game had come out and is in the bargain bin at your local game store. I love being able to play some random 15 dollar game years after its sequel has came out lol.
"Yeah but nintendo is charging us to rent old games" and hulu, netflix, disney plus, hbo max, amazon prime video ect do the same with movies. What the hell is your point? 15 bucks a month to have the pricier video streaming services, that's nearly 200 bucks a year to 'rent' those shows..
"But it doesn't even have real voice chat"
As if any of you'd actually -use- the voice chat. Don't act like you would, you totally wouldnt. Also, its current year, who uses dedicated console/in game voice chat? We have phones and dedicated PC apps for voice chat. And lets pretend it had dedicated in console voice chat, you'd just complain about how toxic the online players were anyway.
This all boils down to anti nintendo bias. Nintendo does something that other companies have been doing for a decade, they catch hell. I think this is one of the best things they've done in a long time.
Yes, I'd much rather prefer some way to buy some of these games outright and not have to have my system check online for it, but even then, to get all these games, dlc, and potential other future perks for this price point-- its not a bad deal, you're just a sour grape sucking grump who's mad as hell about non-issues.
@Gwynbleidd agree, I wouldn’t pay for NSO unless they will allow us to buy those games like on VC! To anyone who wants a better deal?! Buy old n64 and Everdrive 64-and you can keep those games forever! Not be stuck on a service they can take down in the future!
Wow. I am shocked by all this Haterade everyone's drinking on the NSO Expansion Pack.
First off, it's not a full $50 (US) if you already have NSO ... I paid $32. For that, it's worth the online play aspect alone ... I'm about to play Star Fox, Mario Kart, Streets of Rage, and Gun Star Heroes online with my buds. And yeah, I own most of these games already. The portability though is another plus for having them on the Switch. But the way people online have been griping lately, you'd think it was $100!
Just did some quick mario tennis.. nice to have it handy.. have loads of way to play mos tof the n64 games, but this might make me actually do it... got the subscription cause sharing it with the family package it's quite an ok deal... (we all play animal crossing too)
Megadrive: bought that package of megadrive games when it was on sale last year, so probably won't play these that much.. Sonic Mania has made the other sonics obsolete anyway.. Gunstar heroes is always great though
I played the only two games I've never played before. Operation Winback and MUSHA. Which seem both pretty good.
I understand the comments about cost etc but for me, i live in a family where me (Daddy), Mummy and 2 kids all have a switch each with Animal Crossing. I just updated to the family subscription for 48 quid, got a discount on my single membership. Which means all 4 of us get access to the retro games + 4 copies of AC DLC when it launches which is a decent deal IMO.
I'll think I'll pass. I see Nintendo doesn't listen to feedback! Microsoft did when they changed their pricing structure.
The price of this isn't the big issue here. Their servers are dated. Played Smash the other day and now I am being thrown out by the server for no reason, and it's a lottery on how each match plays, some are great, some are a few frames per second! Nintendo needs to get with the times already, it took them about 20 years to give us ethernet!
Nintendo should of left online play free and allowed buyers to pick & choose their retro games. Many mention the Wii formula but that wasn't great either, only 480p, and wasn't a great deal really when you add all your purchases up! The N64 games were £7.50 each I think.
It's a shame. I like playing online with the many people out there, it's great fun, improving your skills with the many players you play with competing in a tournament is fun, it's just a shame it's let down by an average service. I think this is why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold well the online seems to be pretty sold.
I’m not a sucker so I’m not buying into this.
I did just buy Wave Race Blue Storm for GC though!
I'll buy eventually once more games are added. Been very much looking forward to getting N64 games on the switch, and Genesis is just a bonus!
Though the price will make more sense once they add game boy and game boy advance as well.
I might wait like a year until a bunch more games are added and I get through more of my switch backlog. No reason to pay an extra $50 a year when I have a bunch of switch games i haven't even started playing yet.
I'm really interested in playing Majora's mask cuz I never beat that back in the day. And F-Zero X should be fun cuz it's been over 15 years since I've played an F-Zero game and who knows if they'll actually make one for the switch. Also I think getting back into Banjo-Kazooie will be fun and hopefully they add Banjo Tooie which i never played.
The online service is starting to look really good with these additions, it's just a bit pricey right now until they fill it up with more systems and games.
@Gwynbleidd umm not to jump into your argument here but did you really tell someone else that they aren't going to play these games?? Lol. As if you control this person. I mean granted he said people wouldn't use voice chat which is silly but you're literally saying he's going to buy the service just to not play all these great games. Worst argument ever.
@Gwynbleidd you're again pretending that you control other people. Maybe YOU would only play four games which is why you won't buy the service. But there's dozens of great games on the service. So again, worst argument ever.
Or if you're only talking about the new games and the $30 cost for them, well there's already a lot more than four great games on the two new systems and of course that's just the initial offering with lots more games to be added in the future.
The whole reason a subscription model is so much better is that you get access to the hundreds of games For a cheap yearly price. So you can literally play anything you want anytime you want. It's why for movies and TV shows the world has gone to streaming away from renting and buying individual titles.
Sure they're not going to play every single game offered, but you of course don't need to do that to get your money's worth. The value is in having a lot of games available that you want to play. If the service was hey pick five games you want to be able to play and pay $50 a year that would be terrible and that's what you're describing but that's not remotely what the service is.
It's amazing people have no problem paying $10 or so dollars a month for each video streaming service but when it comes to playing over a hundred retro games (plus the other features like playing switch games online!) they act like $4 a month is crazy.
The price is high at launch compared to the super cheap previously offered $20 service, but that's only because they haven't built out the library for the new systems or added more systems yet. And that's not even the argument you're making anyway, you're literally pretending like you can prevent people from playing the games they want to play on the service.
Ahhh gaaahhhd I loved M.U.S.H.A. as a kid and that alone makes this thing tempting. Well, and the fact that more games not on the Genesis/Mega Drive collection will probably be added in the future. Also, what's a Nintendoo 65??
@TKundNobody 3DS, Emulation, you could probably emulate it on a phone.
@nimnio I'm glad you don't, but don't assume I do.
@Tyranexx Ah I see. Must have been good to have finally played the N64 Zeldas. 3ds is such a treasure trove of old games. The pokemon and dragon quest games have so many entries. And backwards compatibility is such a plus. Pick up Chrono Trigger if you can find it anywhere, I played that for the first time as an adult and it still left a massive impression on me.
Same about the Majora's Mask direct! And the game came out the following March, it was so quick. Probably the most I'd been excited for a game since Twilight Princess on Gamecube and until Breath of the Wild.
@russell-marlow I can emulate N64 games on my £40 cheap android phone. If you've got an 8bitdo controller you can connect it via bluetooth and youve got the whole N64 library at your fingertips for free.
I’ve played dr mario 64 for the first time today. And gotta say. It’s a fun game. But goddamn it’s hard. I haven’t finished a single game yet. I must be doing something wrong or maybe it’s just crazy hard…
@BongoBongo123 I was late to the Zelda party by some standards. My first game was Twilight Princess on the Wii, and it took me two tries to become invested. Everything just clicked at one point during the narrative, and the series has been my favorite one since! The 3DS family is amazing, doubly so with backwards compatibility with most of the DS library. All set on Chrono Trigger; I bought it new off of Square Enix's site during one of their sales years ago, when they still printed DS games in-house. A wonderful game. I still need to go back for the other endings. XD
Same on the Majora's Mask hype! I also think the next time I was so hyped for a Zelda game was when Breath of the Wild was fully revealed.
I've played the majority of the Nintendo ones on VC in recent years and some of the SEGA Megadrive ones too. So I'll wait until there is a bigger library. The ones I have played least recently will attract me more with regard to this pack, I think. That's despite the portability
Hahaha I tried Strider first on the Genesis side... Ouf! Though I'm sure there's a serviceable game buried in there, early impression was that the game has aged extremely poorly.
@BongoBongo123 Yes, that's my point. And also the Steam Deck is coming out in a couple of months.
@Gwynbleidd VC has never been on the switch so it wasn’t “removed” it just wasn’t added.
