Earlier this year, Capcom revealed fantastic news at this year's PAX East - a mythical adventure would take place with Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, a HD collection of two of Capcom's arcade hits, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara. The game was set to be released in June for the Wii U eShop and all was well with the world.
However, it's now July, and we haven't gained as much as a sniff of a release date for the Wii U's version of the game. The arcade classic has already been released on PSN, Xbox Live and Steam, so why is it taking its time coming to Nintendo's eShop?
Rey Jimenez, the producer behind DuckTales: Remastered, has informed people on the Capcom Unity forum that the SKU for the Wii U version of Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara has been giving its producer a bit of a headache:
Dunno...not my project. That SKU has been a bit of a nightmare for that producer.
Jimenez isn't directly associated with Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, so it's not known how much he knows about the title.
What are your thoughts on this bit of news, are you eagerly awaiting the game's release for the Wii U eShop? As always, let us know.

I was actually more excited by this than most retail releases so I hope it actually does see release.
Still waiting... patience wearing thin...
Tower of Doom is my favourite arcade game of all time. I nearly wet myself when this was announced for the Wii U. I refuse to get it on my PS3 as I don't want trophies ruining the game for me. Right now there is an empty void in my heart that needs filling...
It is a buggy poop game of terrible quality
Bummer
I wanted to buy this for the Wii U, and support this system, but with no word on a new release date I got it for my PS3.
Well... Its still listed on the Coming Soon part of the eShop, which is a good thing. Other than Mr.Jimenez saying something along the lines of "not my problem", I don't really know what "nightmare for that producer" really means and the article doesn't really go into detail on any of that. (Follow up with D&Ds producer maybe?)

I know, just like when the phone rings the whole game is ruined, or if someone speaks. It sounds ridiculous doesn't it? thats because it is, PS3 options turned off.
Played the demo on the PS3 and will probably buy it for the PS3, as it's not yet on the eShop, and there is also no timeframe on when it will be on the eShop.
Really? It's already out on other platforms and we still don't have an official communication? Now I'm annoyed instead of just frustrated.
Nintendo needs to state when its coming out and why the delay. They killed sales for it. Pissing off Capcom not a good idea when they are actually supporting the system
Always Nintendo's fault. Iwata should have coded the game himself.
Elminster would have finished the coding in a day!
Sounds like the developer has not put the effort into getting it released and it's not Nintendo fault. This is negative headline with no story!!! This site is becoming a Nintendo bashing site instead of Nintendo News. WHY? You folks running this site do realize if you continue to run headlines like this you lose Nintendo fans and you will loose your sites traffic eventually??? The top brass needs to have a meeting and decide the direction of this site.
If you're not in the mood to comment constructively, please wait until you do have something constructive to add to the conversation. Thanks! — TBD
This is pretty big news to me, I play eShop or "arcade" titles a lot more than full retail games. This and Castle of Illusion were the two I was looking forward to most on Wii U, the latter has already been cancelled...
It's also been listed on Club Nintendo's list of eligible games for months now, at an attractive 20 coins. That, my friends, is what's keeping me from just buying it on XBLA... for now.
After doing some research, it turns out that Nintendo found a bug in the games online multiplayer and is making Capcom fix it before release. I find it funny that it's considered a "nightmare" when Nintendo simply wants a game to work properly on the Wii U. I understand the need for patches for unseen bugs after release but companies have no right to complain if a bug is found before release, it's their responsibility to fix it. Third parties have gotten lazy since Sony and Microsoft don't enforce quality control resulting in a lot of games needing to download patches almost every time you turn those systems on.
It's great if they're fixing it for bugs, but I'm unlikely to pick it up. It was going to be one of the games to fill up my July, but at this rate I'm just going to hold off and save my money for the August line-up of games.
I'm getting this when it comes out though and I will patiently wait for it. Take your time Capcom.
It comes later? Then give it us with discount.
Was really looking forward to playing this online 4 player, might just get it for PS3 if its no released by end of August on e shop.
Good thing I have an Xbox 360.
@TreonsRealm Thx 4 doing the research. It was kinda what I was thinking. Still looking forward 2 its eventual release.
@ngamer155 The games been released on every other home console so I'd rather they hurry up and put on the e shop' I'm sure a problem can be patched.
The whole bug things sounds legitimate. No matter what they did Nintendo would have got bad press.
Game delayed on Wii U, not on PS3 or 360 so NINTENDO SUCKS.
or Game releases on all 3 systems, Wii U version has bugs NINTENDO SUCKS!
Sadly, In this day and age, patches are a reality of gaming. So I think being a multi platform release, delaying it for a system that already cops way too much bad press was probably the wrong decision.
What does SKU stand for?
Nintendo is lame. No news here.
Some websites i would never use are saying, Nintendo found a bug and sent it back, Capcom are having problems with the games online multiplayer or it's still in the approval process, take your pick.
If Nintendo and Capcom don't release this game soon on the Wii U eShop, then I'll likely just buy it it on PSN. I was thinking this would be awesome to play on the GamePad, but they can't even release an enhanced port of two arcade games without a huge delay.
And don't be surprised if DuckTales Remastered gets delayed being released on the Wii U despite having a release date.
@banacheck Which websites?
@TreonsRealm
Thanks for doing the research. If this is true, then I applaud Nintendo for making Capcom send it back to the kitchen to make sure it's fully cooked. I can't stand obvious bugs that should have been fixed on the cutting room floor.
Wow there's lots of trolls on here. I can't wait for this game. I have a 360 and PS3 and still have no interest until it gets a Wii U release. The second screen option is by far the best feature and would rather wait and play this while my wife watches Dr Phil. LOL
@Knux - I wouldn't worry about DuckTales Remastered. It's being handled by Wayforward and they have a TON of experience with Nintendo's eShop/WiiWare platform. Hell, they are some of the best 2D developers and biggest Nintendo supporters in the industry today (I have almost every one of their original franchise games and love them all). I wish Nintendo would contract them to do a 2D Metroid for 3DS and Wii U, how freakin sweet would that be!
Capcom on the other hand has lost much of what once made them great. A lot of their teams have gotten lazy and rush poor products for a quick buck. I still want this game but I have to applaud Nintendo for calling them out and not allowing them to take advantage of them.
@Knux Same here I'll wait till mid August for a release confirmation otherwise PSN is where I'll be heading. If DuckTales Remastered is pushed back for Wii U then it will just add to my growing feeling of frustration towards the Wii U.
Project is a nightmare. Oh no this sounds bad i wonder what it is.. "Don't know, not my project" um what?
So guys is it really nintendo's fault not releasing it on tandem with the other systems or is it as @TreonsRealms said capcom's fault for not bug squashing the game b4 release. Take your pick.
I guarantee the bug that Nintendo sent it back for is on all the other vesions too. Hell, I've heard that the steam version is a buggy mess.
This is why Nintendo's code approval is so stringent. They want games on their system to work properly, even if that means they are delayed.
I can't believe the attitude people have now that making games work on launch is a bad thing. I'd rather wait and have the game work when I buy it than try to play a buggy game until they get around to fixing it (which they might not bother doing since they have your money already anyway).
The bashing should be going to everyone else for not finding it.
Y'know what? I'll accept that. I have heard the rumors of game-breaking bugs in this game. Let our PS3 and XBLA brethren suffer with the bugs while Nintendo gets one that was meticulously quality controlled.
At this point I'd rather shell out $100 for the Sega Saturn version that does work, than spend $15 on another platform for one that does not.
I am interested on this one, but not to the extent of throwing a tantrum if it gets delayed. A new release date could ease the pain, though.
TBH, I am a hundred times more interested in Ducktales Remastered, and since that does not have online and it is being made by Wayforward, then that should arrive on time.
I guess I'm kind of in the nostalgia camp for this one. My little brother and I used to play this all the time... also, I could use a good online game for my Wii U.
Dont buy stuff like this on Wii U.
For example Toki Tori 2 on Wii U is expensive, steam just released it on sale for $9 and it is toki tori 2+ with tons of extra levels and content.
I definitely want this game for the Wii U. I don't pay for Xbox live because I don't game online enough to justify the price they want, and on PSN you will have to have a plus membership soon to play games online...I'd rather buy this for the Wii U and play it online with other people for free. I don't know who's fault it is, but hopefully it's because they do want the game to run correctly for the system. An estimated release date would be nice, though.
@ GamerJunkie - That's not a fair way to approach purchasing games on the Wii U (or any other system for that matter). By that argument, you should never buy an indie game on your console of choice and just wait for the Humble Indie Bundle to pay what you want. That's kind of a messed up way at looking at things and really screws the indie developer who poured their heart and soul into the games.
As for Toki Tori 2, the developer has flat out stated that they will be bring the Toki Tori 2+ content to Wii U. Indie developers are not "out to get you" and have been pretty fair compared to the way traditional third parties nickel and dime you with DLC and different versions. Wayforward (one of the best mainstream indie developers) has given updates to their Mighty Switch Force series free of charge since launch, same with Trine 2 (which is an awesome Wii U game, the best version in fact).
If you want to wait for the cheapest version (on any platform), that's fine but putting a blanket statement "Don't buy stuff like this on Wii U" is unfair to Gamer's and the Developers.
Thanks for the update, even though it doesn't tell us much. It's nice to hear that somebody else realizes that the release date has come and gone and the Nintendo site says that we can download it AND that the release date is TBD. So confusing.
I will be holding out for the Wii U release. I like the gamepad.
@Usagi-san
Stock Keeping Unit
Now the need to release the arcade version of willow, that game was awesome!
@GamerJunkie: On top of what @TreonsRealm said, if you actually read all the other comments, you would have found out that all the other versions of this game are pretty buggy, whereas Nintendo is not letting this game see the light of day on the eShop until all the bugs are ironed out. As much as I love getting Steam games on sale, I'll take a more expensive version over a cheaper version if it means a higher quality experience.
@TreonsRealm Yea i talk to the devs of Toki Tori on steam, they reply directly to most comments on there in the games forum. They said they will bring the Wii U bonus content, "when the time is right" which to me sounds like they will charge for it.
Even if its free, you had to pay more and wait a long time on Wii U.
I will never buy indie games that are also on steam on the Wii U because of that. They are always way more money, missing content, late, etc. The only one i got and it hasn't been a disaster too much is Zen pinball 2, and that had a bug in it where global rankings didn't even work for a month after release. I will support that game with buying more tables, but thats it.
So, bugs are in Wii U games as well, many games caused freezing of the console and many other problems, Nintendo has patched many games, so don't try to say the versions on Wii U have no bugs lol. Wii U versions of games are inferior to the PC versions.
If you want to buy them still, go ahead, but I will only buy 1st party games on here, I learned my lesson already.
@GamerJunkie - Why does "when the time is right" sound like they will charge for it? It sounds more like they would wait until late summer/fall to capitalize on the bigger push from Nintendo on first party software & eShop (kind of like a second launch/special edition). Considering the precedent set by Trine 2 & Mighty Switch Force, it's way more likely that it will be advertised as a free update for existing owners. It sounds pretty fair when you consider that the game hit the eShop over 3 months before Steam (and they are still giving Wii U owners the bonus content).
As for prices, eShop indie games go on sale all the time now (many as much as 50% off) which is very much in line with what other services offer. Nintendo has made it clear that the indie developers are in charge of pricing and control the sale prices. Their pricing is in line with other services as well and if there is an issue, the developer can permanently change the price of the game (Little Inferno launched at $15 and was later changed to $10 even offering a limited time sale for $5). I also haven't seen this "missing content" you speak of, most of the games match content or even offer more. The late issue comes into play when Nintendo finds a problem and forces the developer to fix it (as is the case in the article above).
As for bugs, I have only run into these with third party disc based games which is rectified by said third party through patches (which is unfortunately a standard practice on ALL platforms including PC). Also I never said that Wii U games have no bugs, I simply pointed out that if Nintendo finds them before release such as the case with D&D they make the developer fix before release. Also, there have been cases where the Wii U version of the game is the definitive version of a game as stated by the games developer (Trine 2 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted). I am by no means downing on the PC as I use mine for a lot of gaming but the Wii U brings a lot to the table for many games and features such as off-TV play, multiple control options and local multiplayer make the machine a very viable choice for many eShop releases.
@banacheck "I know, just like when the phone rings the whole game is ruined, or if someone speaks. It sounds ridiculous doesn't it? thats because it is, PS3 options turned off."
Ah Sarcasm, my old friend! So good of you to show up and contribute your usual nothingness to the discussion!
@Truelovetat
"Wow there's lots of trolls on here."
Unfortunately some people have nothing better to do. That's the Internet for you, where nerds sit around being sarcastic and wondering why they can't find girlfriends.
Steam sells this for $14.99 for the PC. If it sells for same I'll grab it. As long as it has multiplayer for 4 players.
well isn't it obvious? the Wii U is Cursed! it's CURSED i tell you!!!!
The delay is likely having the game run on the gamepad. I wonder if that could be it?
I have this on 360 and its pretty fun to play with other people. I'm just now finding out that this is not on Wii U yet. I just assumed that it was released around the same time as Live and PSN. Hope it gets released on the e shop soon.
I have this on the 360 and I have run into 0 bugs. Don't know what you all are talking about. Just because the Wii U version ran into bugs doesn't necessarily mean the other 2 automatically has bugs. He could have been referring to bugs with the gamepad for all we know. Still, it sucks that the Wii U doesn't have it yet. At the same time, its good because they won't run into bugs.
I am going to buy this game
Well I appreciate Nintendo "sticking to their guns" and waiting till Capcom fixes the problem the "producer" did not see...
No excuses just get it done Capcom ... Obviously this is not the same personnel who works on monster hunter
I have it on the PC and it is utter junk they haven't put any useful effort in at all. Very very disappointed.
(It is better playing it on Mame on my PC because you can choose a reasonable way to scale it using exact numbers).
@TreonsRealm As much as 50% off is generally still 3 times as much as the sale steam price. (Not even mentioning the Humble Indie Bundle price).
The best people using steam continue fixing / improving the game for much longer.
I even don't think Trine 2 is even that good. Didn't really enjoy it that much certainly not enough to buy it again for twice the price that it cost me last time.
(Compared to Shank 2 / Bastion / Jamestown / Toki Tori / Super Meatboy / Binding of Issac / Super Hexagon / A.R.E.S / Gunlord even VVVVV).
I would buy Super Hexagon on 3DS at any cost presuming the frame rate was perfect. (Perfectly suited to the 3DS effect).
@GamerJunkie I agree mostly but I am glad I got Gunman Clive on the 3DS. It is the best version and wad the same price so what you say is not an absolute even though it applies most of the time.
(Too many indie games are garbage these days (And would have been have been given away for free not too long ago by people who are still learning really) and whether other people like them doesn't affect whether I do.)
This would have been better put on VC Arcade not messed with and done by someone like D4 enterprises who knows what they are doing.
@LDXD This game was meant to be played with people next to you 20 years ago in the arcade. The new feature of the remake is ONLINE PLAY~!!! Also, your friends don't have a PC at home to play with you online? Come on man..... In reality most people don't have friends over to play videogames everyday, so online is more convenient for multiplayer. Especially adults.
@LDXD It was meant to be played on a 4 player arcade machine using a CRT. That is why it doesn't look right on A HDTV and won't without some proper effort put in which Capcom don't do these days. (The VC Super Ghouls and Ghosts still isn't fixed like the playstation and saturn versions were that is Capcom all over. Megaman they could have put a bit of effort in and used the sprites from the Genesis version made sure it was rock solid then released it. Or just fixed the slowdown by overclocking the emulator). They have lost their way completely.
There is much better examples of things that have been taken from the Arcade / Saturn and updated. (i.e Radiant Silvergun). The Saturn version of this looks like quite a reasonable version. (Other than the Japanese text).
@TreonsRealm Wayforward are technically pretty good and manage to do stuff without losing what made the old games good in the first place they are not very inventive though. Looks like they have nerfed Duck Tales according to this : http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/22/4136816/ducktales-remastered-pax-east-capcom - Generally they put less effort into anything other than the defaults (Which are too easy).
@LDXD That is you man, but adults dont invite their friends over to play games.... The average gamer is 25 years old or so, not a teenager or younger that says, "hey man come over my house and sit next to me and play some videogames." Adults have girls/wives/kids/jobs, etc. and don't have time for that so they play online when they have time at home. Why is it hard for you to understand that? Its why online gaming has taken off and is way more popular now than just multiplayer locally. If you are a single person age 13-20s yea you might think the way you do, but most people are not that way.
@LDXD I will be an old man still gaming, but doubt it will be over my friends house. Sure you can visit an old friend a couple times a year as an adult, but when you grow up you will realize "friends" get married, have kids, move away to other neighborhoods, cities, states and countries. You usually only see them a few times per year. That is why the internet is so cool, we keep in touch by doing stuff online now. When you do see old friends as an adult, you mainly see them at holidays, weddings, funerals or birthdays, etc. you're not gonna be sitting there playing a videogame during those times either. Online is how adults play games the vast majority of the time.
@unrandomsam - Wayforward games (and even many of their licensed titles despite publisher restrictions) are both technically impressive and great from a gameplay standpoint. Given the limitations of 2D, they craft some of the best gameplay experiences and variety for their games. Their Mighty series is a great example of this with each game being drastically different from the previous while still being great games (most developers would create slight variations and stamp it as another quick cash grab sequel). Their games are also quite challenging where most of the industry is obsessed with dumbing things down as much as possible. As for innovation, I would argue that their 2D games have more innovation in them than whatever me too FPS is pooped into the market every couple months. Much like hollywood, most of what is released by the major publishers is either a sequel or so derivative of another game that it may as well be a sequel (especially true of numerous "new" franchises).
As for your article, if you had bothered to read it and actually researched the game, you would know that the so called "nerfing" of the game is completely optional. You can switch the super easy mode on it you choose or you can make the game super hard if you choose. I have no doubt the option of making the game easier was dictated by Disney to appeal to the younger crowd but Wayforward knew the old school audience for the game and has designed it to allow games to customize the difficulty through the options menu.
Considering the quality of their work, it's quite unfair to claim they put less effort into their work (it's actually quite rude, can you make something better?). For one, the 2D art produced for their games is WAY more difficult to produce than any 3D model in something such as Halo or Call of Duty (2D animation is a labor of love and one hell of a commitment which is why 2D animation has declined so much). They are also one of the few companies that balances their licensed game work to fund their original games which has allowed them to thrive while many companies continue to crash and burn. It's also worth noting that their licensed titles are actually good which is rather impressive given the typical trends of most licensed video games. I stand by my previous statements about Wayforward, they are one of the best "mainstream" indie developers in the market today and continue to be major (and financially successful) supporters of Nintendo.
That's too bad. I was looking forward to some old school gaming. I guess we wait a bit longer.
I hope to get this game soon ... Looks Awesome like Golden Ax !!!! Anyways Hopefully it will come out before Pikmin 3... 4 player drop in Co Op sounds really cool... Hopefully I can download this Thursday 18th(fingers crossed)
@GamerJunkie Man... I STILL invite my buds over to play NES games! On-the-couch gaming is much more fun than over the internet...
@TreonsRealm They produce really good stuff. (Like Contra 4 / Dsiware Shantae). Never anything truly timeless like Gunstar Heroes though. They are not 100% gold in everything they do like you make it sound.
Mighty Switch Force I didn't enjoy at all though. (Forced myself through it because I didn't have that many games on my 3DS at the time - quite enjoyed it towards the end. If it started there and got harder I would have probably liked it maybe more enemies with life in them).
I hope they do Ducktales well don't agree with messing with the mechanics / difficulty though. (Wasn't a problem for Bionic Commando Rearmed which was great). I am not going to say that have done it brilliant when the changes sound like they will break the game.
You go on about graphics but I really don't care about them. (I don't like sprite flicker especially not when it is artificially added to make something look retro).
I care more about level design / how the game flows once you know how to play it. (Think this is a skill that has been lost by the major players including Nintendo.) No tutorials or leading you into anything but just difficult from the get go. One difficulty level. (Never enough effort goes into the others).
Lets not remember using the hardware available today is much easier than without a high level library at all. (Should be enough to offset the extra effort in modern graphics.)
I'm curious about the quality of the PS3 and XBLA versions of this after hearing people whine about bugs and input lag. From what I understand the overall quality of the XBLA and PS3 versions is pretty poor and they simply aren't emulated properly. I played the demo on my 360 for a bit but didn't find anything really wrong with them however. With all the complaints these versions are getting, it seems Nintendo isn't going to let Capcom get away with shoddy porting.
Any updates...? Why is this taking so...
So...
So...
Long... ?
Here's hoping it makes it out, it's a very entertaining game that the new generation of Nintendo players would definitely enjoy.
Guess it's not going to be released
